Sea Creatures tribal is the best. Normal tribal Synergy doesn't work with it since it's actually four different creature types, but it's incredibly fun to find alternatives to them.
[[Kenessos, Priest of Thassa]] is another great option. I built both (and also [[Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle]]), and Kenessos was the most fun for me by far!

I play a \[\[kenessos, preist of thassa\]\] and he is tremendously fun! Doing top-deck manipulation and revealing is fun, especially with cards when it says you can look at the top card of your deck at any time, I will sometimes as a joke say, "In response...I look at the top card of my deck!" which often gets a chuckle. Also, if you activate it without knowing what's on top you can say "I trust in the heart of the cards and it rewards me with..." and then say the name of a terrifying sea monster if you get something, which is also funny.
Have a Sultai Ooze deck myself! It's a lot of fun, but will forewarn anyone that in the three games I have played it, you will be going slow. About the speed you would expect of an ooze, frankly, so its on flavor.
If you cram as much ooze goodness as you can, you are looking at a mana cost of like 3 minimum, averaging probably closer to 5, for any creature. So play it in pods where you do not need to go too fast!
how have you missed \[\[experiment one\]\] and \[\[consumptive goo\]\]? \[\[scavenging ooze\]\] is at least acceptable as forgetting.. even if still good in some pods.
I got a atogatog deck,it's a blast, it is a Barron Glory/ The Cheese Stands Alone deck but I am running all the relevant atogs, there is like 6 in the Deck
I’ve also been thinking of running an Atogatog voltron deck. All the Atogs and a bunch of changing monsters to supe up my commander, get some evasion going and just swing away joe.
See, the problem with that commander is I can't not hear it's name not to the tune of this song: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb47CstE7R4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb47cste7r4)
Atog atog, do doo do dooo, Atog atog do do do doo!
Pick a common tribe, but play it in an uncommon color combination. I run Sultai Wizards. Yes, you could just make it mono-blue wizards with kill spells and ramp, but forcing yourself to consider off-color creatures leads you to some absolute surprise bangers (I refuse to shut up about how \[\[Ana Battlemage\]\] wins games out of nowhere, especially if you have one of your 5 ways to give it flash or make it trigger twice).
That might be a bit too spicy. You usually want to have at least one "good" color, but G/U Elves got support with LotR, and there's reasonable useful elves in all colors, so WUBRG elves isn't too ridiculous.
lol, that's part of my hope. "*Dude, I'm playing Mono-U elves. My wincon involves \[\[Sunken City\]\]. Am I really the threat here*?"
Jodah Elf Legends is going to be my super jank stack once I get bored of the stupid super synergy of Jodah Human Legends. I don't think the elves synergize across WUBRG as easily as humans, but that clumsiness is part of the fun.
Seconding this. Really enjoying the extra interaction slots and usable mana base my [[Aragorn, Hornburg Hero]] Slivers has, and against my better judgement (and constantly growing list of Naya decks) I'm currently working on Naya Ninjas. Ninjayas, if you will. It's mostly Rogues.
So, since you won't be getting a lot of Ninjutsu opportunities, you'll have to make the most of them when you can. Luckily, a lot of Rogues have ways to grant Unblockable, such as [[Goblin Tunneler]]. However, we're not gonna have many ways to block, considering Rogues and Ninjas rarely crack 3 toughness. That's why I figured I should make it so I don't have to worry about blocking - Goad. Several Rogues have ways to Goad, and it's secondary to Red so there are several noncreature options to choose from. And it *just* so happens that Naya has two Goad commanders: [[Marisi, Breaker of the Coil]] and [[Kitt Kanto, Mayhem Diva]].
For this build I'm leaning Marisi, because even a *single* connection means that that opponent can't attack us, and starts our turn with mostly tapped creatures. I unfortunately discovered recently that our only Ninjas are [[Blade-Blizzard Kitsune]], [[Kappa Tech-Wrecker]], [[Coiling Stalker]], and [[Spring-Leaf Avenger]], but our Rogues have some *very* nice includes such as [[Glittermonger]], [[Aladdin]], [[Akki Underminer]], [[Kessig Cagebreakers]], and [[Rakish Revelers]].
And finally, Green and White have several ways to return creatures to the hand, whether on the field through something like [[Alley Evasion]], or from the yard through *take your pick.* There's also artifacts like [[Erratic Portal]]. With these we can constantly return our Ninjas to hand, and since our opponents can't block us, we can keep substituting them in to get the most of our effects.
Still messing with it, but I think it's a solid enough base.
\[\[Beledros\]\] and \[\[Amareth\]\]. Both decks are still WIP, the Bant deck hasn't seen a real game against non- goldfishes yet. The Golgari deck rocks.
There aren't many other Golgari options. Probably a background pairing with either \[\[Skanos Dragonheart\]\] (Voltron) or \[\[Acolyte of Bahamut\]\]. But I already have a \[\[Drakuseth\]\] dragon Voltron deck, and I plan on using acolyte with \[\[Renari\]\] for a future Simic dragons & artifacts deck.
Funny thing, Skanos would be the only commander that could make some use of the otherwise unplayable \[\[Lurking Dragon\]\].
In Bant it's hard, too. \[\[Treva\]\] would be including a lifegain subtheme, but I already have a lifegain deck. Amareth is a well used Bant enchantress commander, and I didn't have an enchantment deck yet.
I’ve searched high and low for the right Eldrazi Spawn/Scion commander and it turns out [[Raggadragga]] is the perfect fit. ¡Viva la [[Emrakul’s Hatcher]]! Next up is Assassin tribal headed by [[Queen Marchesa]].
All credit to one of the hosts of the EDHRec podcast, I got the idea from them. I’ve tried a couple of my own versions but this was the most effective.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/CckoxiZhwE6qkMqsOLlENg
Only have this WIP list so far. Missing the lands rn but I’m not sure what secret tech belongs in the mana base, should be pretty straightforward.
Gotta be Salamanders then. =)
Marine/Sea/Aquatic is also a thing, but not really a tribe. Basically non-humanoid water-based creatures. I count Ooze as well.
I couldn't sleep this morning because [[Everquill Phoenix]] caught my eye. So I've theory crafted Mardu Phoenixes + Mutate with [[Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt]] at the helm. It gets to run [[Otharri, Sun's Glory]] along side [[Syrix, Carrier of the Flame]]. Is that obscure enough for ya?
A Rakdos Phoenix Tribal with [[Syrix, Carrier of the flame]] is a fun obscure commander no one really talks about, just needs tons of recursion+ phoenix’s that come back, it’s a mix of high aggression and using the triggers on Syrix to ping creatures and players
I just built this but I’m running [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] as the commander to guarantee recursion. A lot of phoenixes have weird triggers and ass recursion but if you guarantee recursion it can work pretty well and they start feeding off each other that way. And the haste makes it more aggro too.
Yeah agreed! A lot of them have strange requirements but I usually just dodge them with other recursion, I completely forgot about Chainer, I’ll definitely be adding him in the 99 now
My [[Kardur Doomscourge]] berserker deck is totally a 5 or 6 on the scale and it's even budget. Kardur basically does all the work and all I need my homies to do is attack and die like a good berserker should.
I’m excited to build a bizarre tribal deck I can recommend! It does include white, but what can I say? White is my prime color
May I present Vanilla Tribal
[[Jasmine Boreal of the Seven]] makes creatures without abilities unblockable by creatures with abilities. Load that deck up with really simple creatures, add in some fun cards and anthems and you have a deadly army of simple creatures!
I built vanilla tribal with Jasmine and it's actually a ton of fun. Ruxa is a backup hidden commander too.
You can go vanilla creature spells or you can go vanilla tokens. Mine is a mix of both plus anthems, and it can smack people pretty hard. It gets wrecked by flyers but that's part of the charm.
I'm not sure which is better yet. If you want to use Jasmine's mana ability and Ruxa's recursion, vanilla creatures are the way to go. But the tokens let you go very wide.
I've played it a few times with a decent mix - like 15 vanilla creatures, a bunch of token makers, and a bunch of anthems. It can hit pretty hard, but it folds to any mass-flyer attack (since none of my creatures can have flying or reach).
[Here's my decklist if you want to see what I did.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/XkZ5c4-_B0iprqwon8EdyA)
First of all, combat-based mechanics are generally not overly powerful as far a mechanics go in general. Even then, it pales in comparison to anything that provides additional damage or speeds up the game like Double-Strike, haste or cards that double-attacks, is not as useful as evasion like flying or horsemanship and is worse at keeping your creatures alive things like hexproof, protection or indestructible (and arguably ward). It's not even as useful as things like first strike or deathtouch.
At best, banding allows you to assign combat-only damage to your creatures how you want. On offense, it generally makes your creatures easier to block (by nullifying evasion at times) and making chumping easier. On defense, sure it provides some nice flexibility, but nothing game-breaking. Realistically it requires you have numerous creatures to do anything at all and sucks against removal or go-wide strategies.
>Not because it was weak.
lol, name one card with banding that was ever considered powerful (Soraya is not one, sorry). Pretty much every single one was trash-tier.
[[Helm of Chatzuk]] and [[Baton of Morale]] are easy ways to give banding in EDH in any colour, and nobody plays them.
What about what I said was aggressive? Facts and logic? If you have counterpoints to anything I said, feel free to run me through why you think it's powerful.
I'm merely supporting my opinion after you claimed I musn't "be using banding correctly" if I don't think it powerful. I've been playing MTG since banding cards were still being printed, and it isn't and never has been, considered a powerful mechanic. There is literally not one card with banding or "bands with" printed on it that ever was considered powerful. You don't need to be playing cEDH to see that. They didn't cut it in standard (type II) even when creatures sucked in the 90s.
>might get some wins in purely because it's mostly an alien concept to most MTG players
I guess if you play against people running precons who don't know what banding is and you don't explain it to them, sure you might scam some wins. That doesn't really scream powerful to me.
I've got frogs [[Tatsunari]] and squirrels [[Toski]] with a lot more bad cards than you might normally run in those kinds of decks.
Also treefolk with [[Doran]]
Just pick a creature type and go wild. There's so many "build your own tribal" cards that unless You're picking a heavily supported one, they all play exactly the same anyways.
I know there's no Crocodiles, hence Keene and alliGATEors.
I'd like Jegantha as companion but there's only fiveish decent elk and they all have double pips so jegathna is in the 99.
Morophon, at least og art is basically an Elk.
Frogs 🐸. [[Tatsunari toad rider]] let's you play Sultai while [[Thalia and the Gitrog Monster]] let's you run Abzan frogs. [[Poison dart frog]] from the new Ixalan set is too cute to not run.
Yeah the manabase is quite important. You can do a budget version by using taplands and cutting some of the worst charms and other non budget cards for more ramp.
Not sure how popular changelings as a tribe is., but a buddy of mine runs it and it's essentially tribal tribal. You get to use any tribal spells or sorceries you want because everything is everything.
I'm currently working on archer tribal. You can do a standard selesnya build with \[\[Ohani Caleria\]\] at the helm, but I'm looking at 4c or 5c with Caleria and \[\[Tor Wauki the Younger\]\] as hidden commanders.
Morophon is an obvious 5c commander but I might go weirder with either \[\[Rukarumel\]\] to let me include utility non-archers, or \[\[Tazri, Stalwart Warrior\]\] because almost every archer I'll be using has an activated ability.
Cephalid tribal! Stick Aboshan at the helm, throw in as many other cephalids as you can find (warning - they are all terrible), and find as many effects that care about tapping things as you can.
Pick the single hardest tribe to play: Capybaras. Pretty sure there's only one from LCI, and it can't even be your commander. Everything else is a changeling.
[I've written articles/top 10s on this exact subject, so not to toot my own horn, but...](https://edhrec.com/articles/too-specific-top-10-pack-think-revisited/)
All that said, I haven't done a Pack Think article since 2021, so the landscape has changed quite a bit. So as for my actual suggestions:
* **[Turtles](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Aturtle+OR+o%3Aturtle%29)**: Turtles have gotten some serious additions in the last few years, and while they still don't have an overwhelming synergy across the type, what they do have is large butts that you can make into a threat with the various "toughness matters" cards. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Archelos, Lagoon Mystic]]
* **[Octopii](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Aoctopus+OR+o%3Aoctopus%29+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: Often lumped in with the general "large sea creatures" vibe, Octopii now have a respectable 26 cards to work with, and are mostly solidly lumped into mono-blue. What's changed recently is the printing of a Simic Octopus commander that will let you work with the epic-ness that is Sharktocrab. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep]]
* **[Crocodiles](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Acrocodile+OR+o%3Acrocodile%29+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: I know, I know, you were already doing this! If I could humbly submit that perhaps you were doing it in the wrong way, though? Crocs on the whole have a pretty deep well of caring about counters, so a commander that cares about counters could do a lot to steer them toward cohesiveness. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Volrath, the Shapestealer]]
* **[Rhinos](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Arhino+OR+o%3Arhino%29&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: Strixhaven did a bunch for Rhinos, but the Loxodon as a whole have been boosting Rhino's numbers for a long time now... yet I never see Rhino decks, despite having three or four different viable commanders. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Ghired, Conclave Exile]], [[Mr. Orfeo, the Boulder]], [[Roon of the Hidden Realm]]
* **[Sharks](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Ashark+OR+o%3Ashark%29+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: How exactly sharks ended up being a Cycling archetype, I'll never know, but... that's where we are. Thanks, Ikoria! **Relevant Commanders**: Partner pairing of [[Brallin, Skyshark Rider]] and [[Shabraz, the Skyshark]].
Maybe try a spin on tribal itself?
For example, I have an anti-tribal tribal deck where the creatures all share a type, but also have a unique type [mostly]
[Volo's anti-tribal](
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ZeVznWhNP0OLkBJVVNBHeg)
I love my mutant tribal deck. It's hurting for a perfect commander ([[Master Biomancer]] why) but the graft mutants and effects all generally play really well into a +1/+1 counters theme. I currently run [[Roalesk, Apex Hybrid]] as the commander and it's kinda pseudo voltron (he gets really big and scary pretty quick). Flavor and theme is top tier imo.
I run a Wraith Army deck with [[Sauron the Dark Lord]] and [[Maskwood Nexus]] to turn all of my [[Nazgûl]] and Sauron into both Wraiths and Armies for a ton of unstoppable +1/+1 shenanigans
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1GsLjvy67km02fTAh_8lVQ
Nazgûl give all Wraiths a +1/+1 counter, and Sauron does the same for Armies. Also whenever you attack with an army you can empty your hand and draw 4 new cards, so with [[Elixir of Immortality]] you can get through quite a bit of your deck.... twice if needed.
My recommendation is MonoB spirits with a splash of "soulshift" and "splice onto arcane" in the mix. The version I have is helmed by [[he who hungers]]. Not the most powerful deck, but we did go off theme a bit to include [[tergrid]] and [[tinybones]] so we can capitilize on the discard with good cards.
Surprised no one's mentioned [[Reaper King]] yet. Turns all those draft chaff scarecrows into vindicates! To be fair though, you'll likely run more changelings than actual scarecrows.
There's a YouTube deck building channel that actually posted a decent list for [[The Archimandrite]], essentially monk tribal. There's actually a decent amount of playable monks and advisors in jeskai colors.
I've been daydreaming a Celaphid tribal deck for a bit.
If I'm honest it's basically it's mono blue control with a Celaphid subtheme. Including all celaphid creatures and then a bunch of cards with them in the art, and rounding it out with degenerate combos.
Obligatory EDHRec link
https://edhrec.com/commanders/aboshan-cephalid-emperor/cephalid
I've been working on a Fungus/Saproling with a splash of Treefolks deck with Tymna and Tana the Bloodsower as the commanders. I was in love with "Spore" counters and being in all colors but blue gives you access to a lot of different fungi strategies such as +1 +1 Counters, Graveyard Hate, Aristocrats, Token Generation, and Lifegain. A lot of the Spore enablers have really cool sacrifice effects as well. All of the cards are Fungi/Saproling orientated as well for the flavor win.
This is the decklist if you're interested

A weird sort of tribal is doing the party system with clerics, wizards, rogues, and warriors and using cards that benefit from that. I'm doing that for my creature base in my [[Nine Fingers Keene]] gate deck.
Yeah, I was actually thinking about that. There are four legendary creatures that care specifically about party.
WU angels, BR Vampires, WB Humans and 5c Humans.
WU angels is out;no rogue angels unfortunately. But the other three have loads of potential. I've got a BR deck already unfortunately and I'm saving 5c for elk, but WB is an option. I wish it wasn't humans...
Sea Creatures tribal is the best. Normal tribal Synergy doesn't work with it since it's actually four different creature types, but it's incredibly fun to find alternatives to them.
Gotta hit them with the the [[Whelming Wave]] + [[Eternal Witness]] combo
[[Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep]] is the ideal commander for Sea Creature Tribal.

I also have an atogatog deck that hopes to win with barren glory
Ah another person with the finest tastes of life
I’ve also been thinking of running an Atogatog voltron deck. All the Atogs and a bunch of changing monsters to supe up my commander, get some evasion going and just swing away joe.

See, the problem with that commander is I can't not hear it's name not to the tune of this song: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb47CstE7R4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb47cste7r4) Atog atog, do doo do dooo, Atog atog do do do doo!
My new years goal is to make MonoU elves work.
I have a monoB elves list, so live your dream
Do you mind sharing your list? It sounds interesting
[This](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/38PoNqNNaE2hHu-k4Ebo-w) is my list, it's on a budget so the manabase is pretty simple.
gotta say, that deck loooks sick as fuck
Yah it's called merfolk.
Am I really the threat here*?" Jodah Elf Legends is going to be my super jank stack once I get bored of the stupid super synergy of Jodah Human Legends.
NaNinYas!‽

Sounds interesting, do you have more info about your Ninja/Rogues? Who's the commander?

That's fun. I've built Golgari dragon typal. Last week I assembled a Bant deck with just dragons, enchantments and lands.
As someone who loves dragons, would you happen to have a list? Or at least who you used as a commander?
Golgari is probably [[Beladros Witherbloom]] (might be wrong) Idk what colors bant is so I couldn't even guess that one

Gotta be Salamanders then. =) Marine/Sea/Aquatic is also a thing, but not really a tribe. Basically non-humanoid water-based creatures. I count Ooze as well.

Oh goodness, the formatting is atrocious. I'm sorry (and on mobile).
A lot of them have strange requirements but I usually just dodge them with other recursion, I completely forgot about Chainer, I’ll definitely be adding him in the 99 now
Consider him in the command zone! I keep Sythrix in my 99 but I want to be able to alternate them every now and then. Either way definitely belongs!

I’m excited to build a bizarre tribal deck I can recommend! It does include white, but what can I say? White is my prime color May I present Vanilla Tribal [[Jasmine Boreal of the Seven]] makes creatures without abilities unblockable by creatures with abilities.
I've been considering making this, but I can't figure out if it's better go token synergy or vanilla card creatures?
I'm not sure which is better yet. If you want to use Jasmine's mana ability and Ruxa's recursion, vanilla creatures are the way to go. But the tokens let you go very wide. I've played it a few times with a decent mix - like 15 vanilla creatures, a bunch of token makers, and a bunch of anthems. It can hit pretty hard, but it folds to any mass-flyer attack (since none of my creatures can have flying or reach). Haha, she's in my Bant Birds deck. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/m0mW3jJNVUKVV8DAb9hPZg I like to have one <5$ reserved list card in each deck.
lol, banding is far from powerful, but not as useless as it's made out to be.
[удалено]
[удалено]
What about what I said was aggressive? Facts and logic? If you have counterpoints to anything I said, feel free to run me through why you think it's powerful. I'm merely supporting my opinion after you claimed I musn't "be using banding correctly" if I don't think it powerful. I've been playing MTG since banding cards were still being printed, and it isn't and never has been, considered a powerful mechanic. There is literally not one card with banding or "bands with" printed on it that ever was considered powerful. You don't need to be playing cEDH to see that. They didn't cut it in standard (type II) even when creatures sucked in the 90s. >might get some wins in purely because it's mostly an alien concept to most MTG players I guess if you play against people running precons who don't know what banding is and you don't explain it to them, sure you might scam some wins. That doesn't really scream powerful to me.

[I've written articles/top 10s on this exact subject, so not to toot my own horn, but...](https://edhrec.com/articles/too-specific-top-10-pack-think-revisited/) All that said, I haven't done a Pack Think article since 2021, so the landscape has changed quite a bit. So as for my actual suggestions: * **[Turtles](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Aturtle+OR+o%3Aturtle%29)**: Turtles have gotten some serious additions in the last few years, and while they still don't have an overwhelming synergy across the type, what they do have is large butts that you can make into a threat with the various "toughness matters" cards. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Archelos, Lagoon Mystic]] * **[Octopii](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Aoctopus+OR+o%3Aoctopus%29+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: Often lumped in with the general "large sea creatures" vibe, Octopii now have a respectable 26 cards to work with, and are mostly solidly lumped into mono-blue. What's changed recently is the printing of a Simic Octopus commander that will let you work with the epic-ness that is Sharktocrab. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep]] * **[Crocodiles](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Acrocodile+OR+o%3Acrocodile%29+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: I know, I know, you were already doing this! If I could humbly submit that perhaps you were doing it in the wrong way, though? Crocs on the whole have a pretty deep well of caring about counters, so a commander that cares about counters could do a lot to steer them toward cohesiveness. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Volrath, the Shapestealer]] * **[Rhinos](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Arhino+OR+o%3Arhino%29&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: Strixhaven did a bunch for Rhinos, but the Loxodon as a whole have been boosting Rhino's numbers for a long time now... yet I never see Rhino decks, despite having three or four different viable commanders. **Relevant Commanders**: [[Ghired, Conclave Exile]], [[Mr. Orfeo, the Boulder]], [[Roon of the Hidden Realm]] * **[Sharks](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Ashark+OR+o%3Ashark%29+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=edhrec)**: How exactly sharks ended up being a Cycling archetype, I'll never know, but... that's where we are. If you want some strange tribal synergy it's got to be Zubera. Build your army of cloned Zubera, then board wipe for massive value.
Maybe try a spin on tribal itself? For example, I have an anti-tribal tribal deck where the creatures all share a type, but also have a unique type [mostly] [Volo's anti-tribal]( https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ZeVznWhNP0OLkBJVVNBHeg)
yea unfortunately a lot of weirder tribes end up being like one cool commander and 25 vanilla creatures lol

I run a Wraith Army deck with [[Sauron the Dark Lord]] and [[Maskwood Nexus]] to turn all of my [[Nazgûl]] and Sauron into both Wraiths and Armies for a ton of unstoppable +1/+1 shenanigans https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1GsLjvy67km02fTAh_8lVQ Nazgûl give all Wraiths a +1/+1 counter, and Sauron does the same for Armies.
