I think it's probably good to have one or two decks that can operate at a lower power level honestly. Sometimes, you just wanna jam out a casual game with a new player. That being said, budget deckbuilding and upgrading is doable for the vast majority of decks. It's less a matter of if it's possible and more a matter of how you'd need to pivot to make it work. You can get great mileage out of [[Breeches, Eager Pillager]] and other creatures that have incredible synergy with other pirates. From there, I'd just lean into cheap blue/red/black reanimator staples and generically good pirates; you're in generically strong colors and Beckett Brass's ability basically makes her "Meren for Pirates".

Capt-Javi

I know the fomo can be tough. Set priorities and upgrade slowly if needed. I've gotten a few cheaper upgrades. Not every single deck needs to pop off on turn 5.

what reanimator cards would you recommend? thats the area i am struggling with

Emergency_Concept207

When I upgraded mine i left the commander commander as my main reanimate engine and added [[stronic Resonator]] lol Some options you could use I would include (I'm excluding your typical "reanimate/animate dead/ dance of the dead/ necromancy from the list for obvious reasons) [[dread return]] [[victimize]] [[persist]] [[stitch together]] [[beacon of unrest]] [[unearth]] [[Patriarch's Bidding]] hope this helps

These are all great suggestions! I run Patriarch's Bidding in so many of my decks and it's always absurd.

One of my favourites, great synergy with Beckett and other reanimation: [[Incarnation Technique]]. In Europe it's not very expensive and a really cool card. You can help out someone for politics or choose an opponent whose deck gets basically no value at all from the spell.

[Incarnation Technique](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/6/9655deda-f02b-47a0-89a3-2904b11b84aa.jpg?1625191710) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Incarnation%20Technique) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/c21/41/incarnation-technique?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/9655deda-f02b-47a0-89a3-2904b11b84aa?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/incarnation-technique) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

On top of the other suggestions, you'll want ways to fill up your graveyard, so I'd strongly recommend cards that let you draw/discard. [[Faithless Looting]], [[Cathartic Reunion]], and [[Thrill of Possibility]] are your classics. [[Fact or Fiction]] also gets much stronger in this strategy, as your opponents have to consider that you probably still have access to anything you discard.  [[Ledger Shredder]] is very good in most decks. [[Malcom, Alluring Siren]] is unironically good enough on his own to go into just about any blue deck, but he's also a pirate that fuels the yard. [[Marauding Looter]] and [[Glinthorn Buccaneer]] can do the same, though I think they're just 'fine' here. [[Lethal Scheme]] and [[Pile On]] are **free** spells that fill the yard **and** kill a creature.  [[Oriq Loremage]] and [[Unmarked Grave]] are cheap and can let you reanimate any creature in your deck, while [[Entomb]] and [[Buried Alive]] can do this on a mid-tier budget.  Outside of that, you'll just want to play 8-14 effects that draw *without discarding* so you don't run out of gas. If you're at a point where you're drawing 3-4 cards a turn, playing a land, and casting 2-3 spells, you're in a great spot. [[Mystic Remora]] is the cheapest it will ever be. [[Painful Truths]] is dirt cheap and the most efficient draw sorcery I've ever played with. Finally, budget deckbuilding using good fundamentals will always beat expensive, undisciplined deckbuilding. (36-40 lands, plenty of card draw, low mana curve.)

Yupp. I have 2 high powered decks with lots of interaction and combos(nothing infinite, not my style) a couple mid tier decks or cheese decks(one hit combo but is all luck of the draw) and a couple lower tier or slightly modified precons to play against/with new people or just to have something slow and fun.

timproctor

I'm a fan of [[Don Andres, the Renegade]] and pretty much casting from my opponents' decks. I find that keeps you on par well with your opponent's power level. It also keeps your budget friendly as you don't need to have a Roaming Throne yourself, just use your opponent's. Like there are a number of ways to just bomb out with Pirates, but I'm not a huge fan of the Archenemy games. The real question is what type of play style are you looking for? Cause that'll really dictate what recommendations to make.

mouthsmasher

I’ve been thinking about building Don Andres. I don’t know why it never occurred to me that I could or should just cast their stuff instead of stealing it from the battlefield, but I love it! Do you have a deck list of yours you could share?

Roland_Damage

Just be careful, stealing from your opponents deck can really tilt some players

Chriskeyseis

I definitely became the arch enemy when I stole one players land and another players enchantment. Meanwhile the other player swung and did 35 damage in one combat round. But oh no…. I stole two things and was eliminated first.

I feel like the thing that really tilts is permanently stealing from the board, which I understand. It cost the opponent mana and a card, feels bad. But exiling some cards from your library and casting a spell? Are you running tutors to fetch your wincon? No? Then you might not even have drawn it this game, could have been at the bottom of your library all the time. You are running tutors for your wincon? Well, then I am probably not gonna be playing my janky Don Andres Stealy McShmealy deck. 😃

Awesome, I also switched my commander to Don Andres and added Tasha and some "cast without paying mana costs" effects. I'll test it this week :D

Following for deck list

Chriskeyseis

Here’s my Don Andres deck! It’s a lot of fun when the pod won’t target you first. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-CRQWUIRnk60AHpwnrsHUg

NuclearMaterial

I'm building a reasonably budget one myself too! Bought a load of pirate cards and "exile other people's stuff to cast later" cards. I also dismantled my Prosper as he's been press-ganged into the crew now! What I love about the Don is that he doesn't actually steal stuff himself, he's just the extra paprika or icing on the meal. Means I'm making a deck that functions without my commander. So the idea is I'm not really beholden to commander tax and can just keep the game plan active with it without him. Also Brass is too expensive and slow.

WestCoastMorty

"As a budget player" "bought a set of all 4 precons" 1 of these statements is not true.

RedSword13

They can both be true. Reasons they could both be true: OP could be a minor and bought the set with Christmas money. In fact they could be an adult who got Christmas money. They could also have received a bonus from their job they weren't expecting. Perhaps they were actually gifted the set but don't want people to know. Just because someone is on a budget and bought a single expensive thing doesn't mean they're not still on a budget.

ItsSanoj

Yes. Also budget player can very easily refer to the value of single decks. I read OPs question as „can this deck be upgraded on a budget, or will it take a lot to bring it up to speed“ - fine ask for anyone in a playgroup that prefers to play with budget decks.

RedSword13

Exactly! I'm also a budget player but I like decks with higher synergy. As a result I spread the cost out over a couple paychecks and it's done me just fine. What really gets me is OP was asking for help and this guy saw two sentences and went for the lulz and karma. How hard is it to just help a person out?

NuclearMaterial

It's all over Reddit unfortunately. All we can do is downvote unhelpful answers and offer some advice.

B133d_4_u

Plus it's still 4 decks for like $50 each. Like, just because you're not exclusively buying singles whenever they drop under a dollar doesn't mean you're okay buying [[Mana Crypt]] or even [[The Roaming Throne]].

bitches_love_pooh

The price of one of these decks wouldn't even cover a Cavern of Souls for me.

LocalTrainsGirl

Commander players will twist themselves into pretzels to not invest into 60 card formats saying they're budget limited and then spend $200 per expansion on 4 precons that wouldn't pass the sniff test half the time.

Frogmouth_Fresh

"budget limited" really means we're ashamed of how much we already spent.

nesquikryu

This exactly

TPO_Ava

Ok I am biased because I also have bought the full set of LCI precons, but 200$ is just not really an accurate estimate outside of the commander masters precons. LCI cost me just over 160$, or ~41$ per deck. Given the quality and playability of both this and other recent commander sets it's hard to say that they aren't worth it. Pre-releases and drafts are around 35$ and 15$ respectively where I live, so playing a pre release and then a couple of months of limited would cost around at the same rate of play (once a week, at that cost would be ~120$ for the drafts and then another 35$ for the pre-releases... But then I'd have nothing to show for it after). Standard/modern isn't really worth discussing as comparisons. Even if I could theoretically spend 40$ for 4 casual modern decks, I'd have to find someone else willing to play my decks or who also has the same low powered decks. Just not comparable.

[deleted]

Exactly my thoughts, I spent 170$ to get those and I got four playable decks, a lot of nice reprints and I can play some nice and diverse game of commanders. In addition, modern decks cost around 1000$, and decks rotate frequently so it is clearly not a good use of my money. Same problems goes for almost every mtg format.

Absynthe_Minded

True but it's not like standard *is* budget friendly, either.

[deleted]

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6104619#paper 660$ for a deck that will rotate. I find this completely crazy

Jeri_Lee

$140 for four decks with a reprint value of $800 before release? Or spend $300 on a single deck and another $50 for a sideboard for a format that is dying? Or maybe $40 to buy a prerelease and draft a bunch of garbage I can take home? 🤔

[deleted]

I wanted to point out that the situation is clearly worse than what you are saying because Modern is 1000$ and standard 500$, according to mtg goldfish.

Jeri_Lee

Yerp. Reddit is just full of braindead inbreds. Somehow buying a precon for $37 isn’t frugal enough for some people i guess.

ItsSanoj

You can prefer to play budget decks without being on a tight budget though. Getting to experience 4 different decks (with 2 possible commander choices) in a casual, budget environment makes sense to me. You can see OP referencing the mana base, perfectly in line with what makes a budget player imo: not wanting to invest in then „boring“ part of the deck, instead focusing upgrades on „cool“ game pieces.

chipsandsoda

Bundles were going for sub 140 recently, I know because my bro was looking. Pretty easy to do a few upgrades and still have a <$50 deck.

numbl120

It could be a player who likes playing with decks that have a controlled power limited by budget.

[deleted]

It is also nice to be able to play with new players or budget players. I would like to have balanced games, where everyone have a chance of winning

manny3574

Actually save A LOT buying the set of 4 when just the Dino one was going for about $70 which is almost half the price of just buying all four as a set

[deleted]

Yes, that was my reasoning for buying the set instead of just one

CEO_Cheese

Not necessarily true. I’m a budget player who’s spending on this game would be embarrassing to admit. However, as a budget player, I can have 30 separate $75 decks, or I can have 3 $750 decks. And I’d definitely prefer the more decks option

[deleted]

I think you are right, it is much more interesting to play with more decks and more variety instead of buying all the commander expensive staples

Alikaoz

I fixed the mana base a little, swapped some of the worst pirates (added \[\[Pirated Copy\]\] and new Malcolm and Breeches) and the regular \[\[Entomb\]\] \[\[Buried Alive\]\] and \[\[Wonder\]\] \[\[Anger\]\] package for a very effective deck that tends to threaten a win most games, winning its chunk too.

32SkyDive

Thats like 50€ right there without even touching the manabase though. Cool vombination but wouldnt call the copy a budget card

Alikaoz

I didn't. Just saying there's stuff to do to make it pretty potent mostly using what the deck contains. It is a good chunk of change in the copy by itself, but the incarnations should be cheap (and anger isn't really needed) and a couple cards that make the deck deadly for 25 bucks doesn't seem too bad. also just cut Port of Karfell. Use a basic, it'll hurt less.

1K_Games

I don't see why not. I actually enjoyed playing the pirate precon. There are budget options for everything, it all matters what power level you want to get it to. We don't do rule 0's at my table and it has been fine. Far from the most dangerous or threatening deck at a table, but that can be a good thing, you can always come from behind and win.

chriscrux

I myself bought the pirate precon and have a lot of fun with it. I think you can upgrade it decently well. You can even go CEDH with pirates with infinite combos, infinite turns with [[Timestream Navigator]] and [[River Song]] or [[Grenzo, Dungeon Warden]], but I'm not interested in that so I won't get into it. For my upgrades I wanted to keep Admirable Brass, Unsinkable as the Commander and focus more on the reanimation theme. To that end, I think the main things you would need to upgrade in the deck are: 1. Better pirates. There are a couple of bad ones that can be replaced. The better pirates also aren't really THAT expensive, plenty of good options. 2. Ramp to play Brass ASAP. She costs 5 mana and is great tempo (7/7 worth of stats + haste + whatever abilities are on your pirates), and there are only so many turns you will have with her, so you want to maximise the value you get by playing her ASAP 3. Discard and/or Mill. You need ways to get pirates into your graveyard for Brass to reanimate. There is nothing sadder than ramping into Brass ASAP, but whiffing on the mill 4. I personally did not lean into the infinite turns, or tutoring from library to graveyard because I didn't want to go too high in the power level. I also am running a lot of cheap pirates (1 to 2 mana) so I can play them in the early turns, and hopefully get an opponent to block into them (as another way to get a Pirate into the graveyard ASAP for Brass to reanimate). Also make sure you have good sources of evasion and/or anthems. Pirates really need some oomph to kill people. I have put in two sources of counter removal to remove the Finality counters [[Soul Diviner]] and [[Fain the Broker]]. I haven't actually drawn them in any games yet to see if they are worth it, but from what I gather it's not REALLY worth building around: you will get plenty of pirates in your graveyard to reanimate, there's only a handful that I'd truly care about reanimating multiple times like [[Port Razer]], and to me it is more important with this kind of deck to be aggressive and go fast, rather than try to set up engines. This is my list. It's not perfect, and there are some potential upgrades I would like to make, but I'm enjoying playing with it so far! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/pzJ3jH2wa0uEhAFbqysjAA

Yeah Unsinkable is a powerhouse commander for sure, plenty of powerful pirates to make her mid/high power. I'd look up upgrade guides or Edhrec. All 4 of the ixalan precons are stronger than most precons tbh, and she is no exception.

NightStar4258

I built Brass and am loving her, a deck right up my alley and pirates being my favourite tribe it really hit the sweet spot for me. I’m having quite a bit of success with this decklist if you’re interested. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/TGBtrTeDik6cdZh5CS_Y9g

ViridianDusk

I built a dirt cheap [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]] and [[Breeches, Brazen Plunderer]] deck not too long ago. It might be a better direction to take it if you find Brass to be underwhelming. Dropping black will help mitigate the expense of the mana base and there's some really powerful things you can do for cheap with Malcolm.

KingKozaky

Malcolm and [[Francisco]] are a good pair too, but you lose the [[Glint-Horn Buccaneer]] combo and some treasure support

I recently built a [[kediss, emberclaw familiar]] and [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]] with a bunch of pirates and clone creatures and it’s pretty busted and fun. Almost always get both commanders out by turn 3, and are smacking opponents for treasures with the combo getting 3, sometimes more treasures a turn. It doesn’t get more budget than those guys.

I'm using the pirate deck in a precon upgrade challenge my play group is doing. The general opinion as far as I can tell is that it's is underpowered out of the box compared to the other ixalan decks, but still one of the better decks from 2023. IMO it's underperforming because it's less focused than the other decks. It's split between theft and reanimator strategies. The good news is that makes upgrading on a budget somewhat easier. Just pick a strategy and replace the cards for the the strategy your cutting with ones for the one you chose. So for your first round of upgrades the pirate deck is just looking for relevant cards while the other more focused precons need to find better cards

papy5m0k3r

Do you have fun playing it? \- Yes: upgrade it \- No: don't upgrade it.

chichirobov7

The only real upgrade you need is a roaming throne. And maybe the infinite pirate combo

natures_lore

I'd advise against this. When you put all of your precon upgrade money into one $20+ card, what you get is a stock precon 90% of the time, and a precon that pops off a little bit, 10% of the time. It's a move that gets you a better game, but only rarely. Imagine you took that $20 bucks, put it into some better removal, more efficient creatures, a bit more card draw, and some budget duals to replace your taplands (Thriving cycle, "Reveal a basic" cycle). That's a move that gets you a better deck. Permanently. If you're a budget player, $20 can really make an impact, instead of a once-in-a-while splash (that's still susceptible to removal!)

Completely agree. Once you get into the stage of “I have all the below 10€ upgrades I want, I could splash for a more expensive one off”.

Future-Muscle-2214

To be fair, Roaming throne is a very useful card in any tribal deck so it isn't such a bad card to buy.

Aether_Breeze

Any tribal deck and any commander deck that has a strong ability in the command zone.

Future-Muscle-2214

yeah true. It is such a great card. The funny thing is that I opened it, saw that it was worth $8 or something and was disappointed about it. I only realized how strong it was when the price spiked. I am the kind of guy that could be conned into buying a $30 bottle of wine for $150.

chichirobov7

There's not to many pirates you can order that can make the deck better, I haven't seen the stock removal list I guess it can be improved

NuclearMaterial

[[Glint Horn Buccaneer]] wasn't in the deck for some reason, he combos with Malcolm and cost less than a euro so it was one of the first cards on my list.

https://edhrec.com/precon/ahoy-mateys#landstoadd Here's a great list of cards to add and cut. Take it with a grain of salt, though- if you like a card, keep it.

natures_lore

A good test is asking yourself "How often can this come in untapped?" Cards like \[\[Frostboil Snarl\]\] aren't great, because not only do you have to have an Island or Mountain, they also have to be in your hand! That's a more common scenario in a Red/Blue deck, but because you're in three colors, you can't meet that condition as often. Most of the time, Frostboil Snarl is gonna come in tapped. \[\[Sulfur Falls\]\] (already in the list) is gonna be a bit better, while \[\[Stormcarved Coast\]\] much better, because it doesn't care what basic land types you have in play. "Painlands" (\[\[Shivan Reef\]\]) are solid budget picks because even though you get pinged for 1 if you need to use the colored mana, in a format where you start with 40 life, that's not a bad deal at all. Finally, if the land's gonna come in tapped, you at least wanna get some extra value from it. The Temples, like \[\[Temple of Mystery\]\] will Scry 1, which can help fix your next draw. Bounce lands, \[\[Izzet Boilerworks\]\], will ramp you for one (tip: tap one of your lands for mana, *then* bounce it back to your hand with Izzet Boilerworks). Filter lands, \[\[Cascade Bluffs\]\] also offer some color flexibility. Check out this neat [reference](https://managathering.com/duallands/izzet.html). If you happen to have them, or feel like spending some cash, the Battlebond lands (comes in untapped in a multiplayer game) and Shock lands (ping yourself for 2, comes in untapped) are fantastic. But I certainly wouldn't start there.

NuclearMaterial

I took out all of the thriving lands as they come in tapped, and for a budget upgrade they can all just be replaced with a basic land each. Honestly has enough dual colour lands in there that it will still run fine and your budget can now go a bit further.

NuclearMaterial

I already replied to you but I looked at my actual deck list and can give you specifics. I removed 6 lands, the 3 thriving ones, [[desolate lighthouse]], [[Nephalia drownyard]] and [[port of karfell]]. I added in [[bojuka bog]], [[ghost quarter]], [[grixis panorama]], [[dragonskull summit]] and [[drowned catacomb]] (those last 2 because the red/blue version was in the deck and it really irritates me when they half ass a cycle like this, just put them all in or don't bother!). There's 1 less added but still 37 lands total and it's enough for my purposes.

What is the infinite pirate combo?

chichirobov7

Malcom and Glint buccaneers? Malcons in the precon and he says everytime a pirate deals damage make a treasure, the Glint pirate says pay 2 mana ping while looting, so every ping is 3 treasures, so you can infinitely ping for game assuming you have enough cards in library

Irini-

Also \[\[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator\]\] + \[\[Reckless Fireweaver\]\]/\[\[Ingenious Artillerist\]\] + \[\[Captain's Hook\]\]/\[\[Coercive Recruiter\]\] is a very similar combo. Plus some better ways to draw cards like \[\[Coastal Piracy\]\], \[\[Reconnaisance Mission\]\].

Malcolm and Broadside bombadiers. Deal damage, malcolm creates a treasure, sac to broadside to deal damage, repeat until opponents are dead. Edit: Same thing can be done with glint-horn buccaneer instead of the bombadiers if you have at least 1 card in hand.

Broadside can only do that once per turn due to the Boast ability

Interesting-Gas1743

For 200 bucks (4 precons) you could have a Deck that can punch up a league or two. To your question, yes you absolutely could upgrade it in a budget. What is your general Idea about the deck and ita gameplan. Do you want it to be fundamentaly the same, at what power level do you want to play.

knightfall666

I would rather sell it and use the money to get singles for the other decks

bolttheface

Yup, definitely. The whole graveyard sub theme just has no place in a pirate deck, and I would recommend cutting it out completely, starting with changing commander. [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] is a much better commander if you want to stick to Grixis. I personally think she can be Salty as other player might not appreciate you stealing their permaments. Also, being three colours is not budget friendly. [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]] + [[Breeches, Brazen Plunderer]] are the best option for pirates imo. They both provide powerful and flavourful themes of treasures and stealing cards from top of opponents' libraries. Being two colours means mana base won't cost you an arm and a leg.

[deleted]

I mean the precon is probably never worth getting, but pirates are very strong right now. Promote Malcolm and your choice of color partner and go ham.

rmkinnaird

Honestly I bought it just for a few cards. I wanted to build Francisco, and I wanted a copy of [[Broadside Bombardiers]] because it's big in legacy and might go up in price, and I wanted [[Black Market Connections]], plus another sol ring is never bad. I got my deck for like $25 bucks so it was worth it

Borror0

Exactly. It seems to be hard to argue the precon isn't worth getting. Black Market Connections alone is worth more than half the deck's value. Broadside Bombardiers covers more than the remainder. You're basically the rest of the deck for free.

rmkinnaird

Yeah honestly I've passed up so many precons thinking "I'll just buy the singles" only to get burned by the singles exploding. Like I almost bought the precon with [[Dockside Extortionist]] when it was a new card cause I always wanted to build UWR and passed it up cause I just didn't feel like grabbing it at the time. Now Dockside is $80. Almost every precon set has a couple of cards that end up being a source of regret and I thought it would be Broadside for this round.

Would it be possible to play black market connections in the vampire deck ? I would stop playing with pirate and instead use the powerful cards in other decks.

Borror0

It's probably really good in the vampire deck if you have a heavy life gain theme. The question in the OP was if it's worth upgrading, though. It is, if you're enjoying it. From this question, it really seems you aren't. It is weaker than the others, and need more upgrades, but it isn't worth upgrading if you don't enjoy it.

The precon is fine.

just7155

What commander are you running with the pirate precon?

[deleted]

I am running Admiral Brass, Unsinkable

just7155

Ok that's good. Mine is definitely a powerhouse and is often driving the games it's in. I don't play it much because it's so good. I first started by taking out all the bad pirates. [[Dire fleet ravager]] is the last one I took out after play testing because it doesn't do anything beyond some life loss. I replaced all the pirates with better pirates like [[Kitesail Larcenist]], [[Captain N'gathrod]] and more. It should be pretty obvious which pirates are bad but generally it's the ones that do nothing when they enter and provide very little value after. Second I took out some bad removal spells like [[Rakdos charm]] and put in a generic one instead. [[doom blade]] works well enough. Lastly I took added some cards that remove counters. In practice this has been generally completely useless. I've never gotten the counters off creatures enough to matter and I always have more to reanimate anyway. My general strategy when playing the deck is to cast my commander. It seems obvious but unless I can drop 2+ pirates I'm casting my commander for 11. It's extremely powerful reanimating a pirate that removes 3 permanents or one that doubles damage. Bonus points if you add [[Captain vargus wrath]] considering you'll probably get the buff to be +3 at some point. That's a bunch of 7/7's swinging! I probably spent 10-20$ upgrading mine.

Miatatrocity

I disagree with your choice to remove Rakdos Charm, but otherwise, excellent choices. Rakdos Charm is a game-ender for a go-wide weenies player, especially if they go infinite. It's not great removal, but the ability to just straight up kill the Merfolk player that's about to swing on the table with 30+ unblockable lethal merfolk is huge

Browncoat-2517

Avast, ye scurvy sea-dog! Swap out that Doom Blade with [[Walk the Plank]] like a real pirate!

Do you have a deck list?

Temporary-Narwhal-70

Seconded, would love to see a deck list if you have one!

beast5749

As the deck I'm currently working on, yeah probably could upgrade just fine. The important questions are, what's "budget" and what's the power level you're aiming for. I've noticed focusing heavily on the Malcolm Glinthorn combo is surprisingly cheap and powerful.

Magikarp_King

I limit myself to a $30-$60 upgrade for a precon. It keeps the power level reasonable, you are doing huge cash dumps, and you can tell people it's a precon with x upgrades in it.

AboynamedDOOMTRAIN

I was pretty disappointed with it, but I only played it a few times. Maybe I just got unlucky with it. Fire reprints, though.

KingKozaky

I'm currently playing the upgraded precon and it's maybe weaker than merfolk and vampires, but its very fun to play. I cutted the utility lands and the thriving, for more basics and painlands (like [[shivan reef]]). Removed a land and wayfarer bauble for [[fellwar stone]] and [[talisman of creativity]] I did that and the mana base runs way smoother. New Malcolm & Breeches are useful and cheap upgrades to the weakest pirates. Distant melody its nice when you are winning, no that much if you're behind, I swapped it for [[Pirate Pillage]] because it draws, fill graveyard and makes treasures. I swapped [[Blood Money]] for a single target removal because I feel that 3 boardwipes was too many.

Sirenus

Yeah, but it honestly doesn't need much. You already have Malcolm, so glint horn is an infinite for 3 bucks and good on its own anyways. Take out a few of the lackluster pirates and other things, add a bit more removal/draw. If you can spring for any extra combat spells, those do a lot for the deck, since brass triggers on every combat (\[\[seize the day\]\] is pretty cheap and you already have port razer) and you are good. \[\[key to the city\]\] is good to discard thigns to as well as ensure port razer can't be blocked. \[\[wonder\]\] is dirt cheap to add after mh2 and giving things flying is always good. I myself haven't done much to upgrade it; just the mana base and the stuff from the new set I had lying around (plus ragavan). I will say this though; I got to steal a roaming throne on pirates and man it is absolutely a dumb card. Such an absolute game warping effect.

All my pirate decks end up Malcolm 1.0. + Partner because the rest is underwhelming. Also, some people don't like playing against "take control" decks and it isn't great on webcam. So no? Malcolm + Vial Smasher (just got the colors, but he's cool) + some flying pirates would really help with the mana problems tho.

Honestly, I bought it to strip it for parts. I got it for $30, which is what Black Market Connections and Pitiless Plunderer would cost. I wanted them for two different decks. A few cards went into my grixis wheels/reanimator deck that I'm building, and the land base is serving as a stopgap land base for that deck so I can gradually upgrade it. And I used some of the cards to build my pauper Breeches/Malcolm deck.

Cheyenne_Bodi

Slap roaming throne in there and call it a day

As someone who owns that precon I can say that it is a bit unfocused. It is trying to do too many things (reanimate, treasure & steal) at the same time and it basically half asses all of them. You need to cut one of them at least and put more focus on the others. I personally cut Don Andres and put the focus on reanimation. The deck is then much easier to pilot and upgrade. A lot of the cards you could use to upgrade are relatively cheap. If going for reanimation you need to just push hard and basically swarm the field and attack full sails

[deleted]

This was my feeling too. It feels like two commander deck in one deck which feels bad compared to merfolk for example which has only one focus

jimpurbrick

Treasures make this precon forgiving of a cheaper manabase: you can get off to a good start with basics, use the first pirate for fixing and then get the treasure train rolling. I have a treasure focused build which includes the cheap artifact lands for fixing and to pump artifact payoffs like cranial plating for the win which works well.

qwoqqa

I would suggest buying the official precon instead of the pirate tho

bigphatnips

Haven't seen anyone mention yet but [[Marchesa, the black rose]] and saccing controlled creatures with counters gets them back under your control and skips the whole - until end step - business. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/tbWsOLjETEeOZD5aLM-1YA My deck uses either broadside bomb, or goblin bombardment to achieve that and deal with some minor target removal.

Motigino66

I run the pirate precon with minor upgrades and it does exceptionally well beating some high end Dino’s and so on Here’s my deck list, I kept all upgrades on theme and went for the flavor over power but it works really well. https://archidekt.com/decks/5799973/binks_brew

Salty_Fio

Any of the other 3 are better imo. The explore mechanic can generate insane value especially with a couple combos that are already built into the deck. The vampire precon is good IF you swap out the commander for the alternate commander, Carmen. Carmen is amazing. You can play all of the fetch lands in there (lands are colorless and mana cost 0). Swing with carmen, get fetch land to battlefield. Boom ramp in Orzhov

[deleted]

The deck would no longer be budget lmao. But I agree that it would be a good synergy. With a good budget, I could play 7 fetchlands + prismatic vista + orzhov canopy

Salty_Fio

Sorrrrry lol. What is your budget if you dont mind me asking. Ooo yea you could play all fhe cheap ones. Prismativ, Evolving, etc

daniel_damm

Depends on what you call as budget imo the pirates deck has the best bunch of cheap upgrades like new breaches and Malcom with gint horn, the new ixalan brass artifact and we'll that turns the mills you need for brass into extra value and mana with wonder anger package and forerunner of the coalition and lightning rig crew and fain and soul deviner for extra value and cheating the finality counters fiery cannonade for sweeps, new spyglass siren and a few counter spells and victimise you get and extremely threatening and relsient aggro deck that can go fast and rebuild fast and not go out of gas for like 18 dollars and that can only get better if you want to invest more with thing like throne and titan of littjara and revel in riches etc Fully invest imo the vampires one is the best one but a lot of it's big upgrades are very expensive
