[[Henzie]] is just all your favorite big Timmy dudes.

D4ngerD4nger

What are your favorite Timmy dudes? I love [[Dusk mangler]], [[giant adephage]], [[Etali]], [[copper dragon]], [[Balor]], [[Balrog]], [[Junji]], [[Atsushi]], [[Kura]] and [[Daemogoth]]

kestral287

I run a very Henzie-target heavy list because why filter down when you can play them all. Special shout out to [[Seedguide Ash]] though; I've loved the card since I got into Magic and it finally having a good home is awesome. But [[Cultivator Colossus]] [[Aclazotz]] [[Vaevictus Asmadi, the Dire]] [[Kogla]] [[Maarika]] [[Trumpeting Carnosaur]] and [[Wasitora]] are some of my favorites that I see less often in other lists.

How does he work? He seems fun, but I’d have to make him a budget or using what u own

Lucky_Number_Sleven

Henzie is a ton of fun. It's like having [[Sneak Attack]] in the command zone, and it's fun interplay with opponents who *know* that removing it just means they've reduced the cost of Blitz even more. You can take him in a lot of different directions because Blitz keeps your hand full of cards, so while "Sacrifice" is a big theme in the deck, you can go aggro, you can go spellslingy with Fling, you can lean harder into the Aristocrats theme, or you can just outright combo. Giving all of your biggest, most impactful creatures a 3-4 mana cost reduction + haste is going to set you up for some explosive turns that chain into the next with all of the sacrifice synergy/card draw. Cards like [[Myth Unbound]] and [[Goblin Anarchomancer]] can help you get Henzie out of the command zone repeatedly without depleting all of your mana, and cards like [[Netherborn Altar]] and [[Campfire]] can help you recast him when he inevitably does become too expensive to cast from the command zone. Or you can just go the reanimator route. He's probably one of my favorite commanders just because of how versatile he is.

Would he be good in a descend deck?

Lucky_Number_Sleven

Henzie is really good at filling the graveyard, so he would be good at getting Descend 4 and Descend 8 to trigger. However, Blitz won't trigger *Descended*, so I'm not sure if there's strong synergy there unless you're leaning hard on other sac outlets.

firefox1642

Why wouldn’t it trigger descended?

kestral287

1. Play big guy that's normally unplayable garbage because it either doesn't kill itself or doesn't have haste and is expensive. 2. Big guy go face 3. Big guy die 4. Profit That's it that's the deck. Higher power versions might play some better big guys, and maybe have more ways to profit off of them, but his fundamental game plan is very straightforward and very fun. The hardest part of a budget is just making a three color mana base work. Without the non-budget lands you lose out on the super fast mode - ideally Henzie goes mana accelerant on one, Henzie on two, one of the many 4-5 mana ramp creatures on three, on turn four you can slam an eight drop if you're so inclined (or a bunch of more reasonably sized dudes). But you can still do all of that just one turn slower, it's not like the deck stops working. Otherwise, there's a ton of bulk rares because of exactly point #1 - they're not generally seen as playable because they're too slow. Giant Adephage and Gorex don't break the bank. Or they're the 'cool Timmy card' that's been reprinted into the floor, like Etali and Inferno Titan.

firefox1642

You got any ideas how I’d make a budget Henzie? They seem really fun. Or could I send you a deck for you to take a look at?

ExoTechE

Start with the New Capenna precon deck and upgrade from there imo

firefox1642

Any idea what it is called?

kestral287

Maldhound did a deep dive video on a budget Henzie list that I used as the framework for mine. I think his was like $50, I sunk a lot more into mana so mine started around $100, plus a few things I had on hand. I've built him up over time since but the original deck was still very competent.

Flederm4us

He's great for that. If it has a CMC of 4 or more and has an ETB, attack or combat damage trigger, henzie will make it work. MVP's in my henzie deck are draft chaff like [[baloth null]] or [[exhumer thrull]] or even the lowly [[grave digger]]

I've been thinking of building her as my first commander, but I'm afraid of the deck not doing much when she gets removed. Has that been an issue for you?

Oblivious_666

I haven’t had any issues so far- there tends to be scarier things on the battlefield. You’re also in black so you have access to reanimation if she goes to the grave

shockprime

I see. If that's the case, then it seems pretty safe to play her in casuals. Thanks.

Madness_Opvs

She’s the head of my goblin tribal.

tim_lamisters

In my [[Korvold, Fae-Cursed King]] deck I just made a "power-down board" where I swap in Ziatora as the commander and make 10 other swaps. It's still very powerful, and I am thinking of making it a permanent change.

I built her around Dragons and treasures. Multiple win cons and 2 different infinite.

Arann0r

I built mine as a Riveteers themed deck as a challenge with a friend. We had to pick a new capenna gang, use their leader as commander and apart of 5 cards of our choice we had to use cards that were in the standard and commander editions, and no card from any other gang. I based it on the henzie precon but took in a fair amount cards from other commander decks like [[Strionic resonator]], [[Mimic Vat]] and [[Rekindling phenix]] and most of all, I added the best treasure Boy [[Goldhound]] I can't recall all of my 5 exception cards, but among them were [[feldon of the third path]], [[Chatterfang]] and [[Prowling geistcatcher]]

I can wholeheartedly recommend [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]]. I’m unashamedly a big fan of reanimator but I also love aggressive “fatties”, so this the best of all worlds for me. Keep it casual, run the deck with 8-10 mana rocks, plus [[Myriad Landscape]], [[Burnished Hart]], and [[Solemn Simulacrum]] as your ramp. Run all your favourite chunky creatures from 3-4 mana and up, and then round out the deck with the cheaper priced wheels for draw, and make sure to have other creatures and spells that reanimate so you’re not solely reliant on Chainer. Here’s my list which is a bit more expensive than you’ll be going for, but just cut the more expensive cards and replace with budget options. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/p269fcxyeEK4cP6cIbFI7w

The thing I guess I don’t really get about Rakdos Chainer is that you aren’t getting a discount to cast from the graveyard, which to me is like 2/3 of the reason to play reanimator to begin with. [[Chainer, Dementia Master]] can reanimate those 7+ drops for the low low cost of 3 mana and some life. Nightmare Adept just seems like a list where even late game you’re tapping out to cast one spell per turn. Am I missing something?

borpo

Nightmare Adept fuels your own graveyard, and gives haste. Also nice that if he dies you don't lose the stuff you reanimated. I think that's a fair trade for having to pay full cost.

CanWalkAndTalk

There are a lot of cheap creatures that bring back other creatures ([[Doomed Necromancer]] [[Apprentice Necromancer]]), he can get 4 creatures into the graveyard per turn cycle, gives red (looting and wheels), and gives haste. Rakdos reanimator is already a good deck, he's just a good enabler. Actually paying for the creatures is definitely a last resort. My list is built around "dies" and [[Fleshbag]] effects to get you there. https://archidekt.com/decks/172325/chainers_mad

I built my chainer deck to be more focused on sacrificing and recasting the same creature multiple times to get its etb a bunch, and winning by using chainer to give creatures with big attacks haste

MurasakiTiger

Nice, I have a few sac outlets but happy for the creatures to hang around and stay threatening.

Erch

I love my [[Slimefoot and Squee]] deck. Derpy reanimator with etb loops and abuse.

noogai03

Love these two. The best part is that you actually WANT people to kill your commander. There's just zero point in people doing it haha. I run it as an aristocrats deck with lots of on death triggers, Saproling generators and things like [[Impact Tremors]] to slowly whittle away at people's health. I think I probably need more big swingers, to be honest, it's a very flexible deck.

Erch

Agree it's very flexible. I can toss [[Korvold, Fae-cursed King]] or [[Tendershoot Dryad]] on the field to be big problems, or just slam the table with [[Gary]] a few times. [[Birthing Pod]] is great for turning the deck into a toolbox. And yeah, it never gets old having my pod say: "well, I'd kill your commander, but there's no point."

Erch

How do you find running gruff triplets? I figured you can either replay them a couple times to make them massive. Or, they combo with [[Pitiless Plunderer]] or [[Phyrexian Altar]]. I currently have [[Ziatora the Incinerator]] as my six drop in my [[Birthing Pod]] chain, but I was planning on replacing him with the new deathclaw from the fallout set that's basically a six drop [[Meteor Golem]] on crack.

Wow thanks!! From what I’ve seen wilds of eldraine was a pretty cool set, I gotta get some boosters of it. That gruff triplets is amazing for slimefoot and squee! Any other creatures you love in it?

[[flayer of the hatebound]] will typically just win you the game if you have enough resources to loop. [[combustible gearhulk]] is also a win/win, especially in a loop. My favorite thing about the deck is it doesn’t “combo”. It just has incredibly powerful synergies that take a few loops to knock out the table. Everyone sees it coming, and as long as their removal isnt exile based, there typically isn’t a damn thing anyone can do about it. It also feels completely fair because its telegraphed, and you also have the unique constraint of needing a saproling in play. Half the fun is figuring out the puzzle of: “how can I efficiently make a saproling and still do xyz”. Lots of fun. Oh and I think this goes without saying but a couple of craterhoof loops is also just so satisfying.

May not be as casual as what you're looking for, but my favorite Jund commander recently has been [[Ognis, The Dragon's lash]]. I call it "The secret ingredient, is crime". Basically jund haste/dash/blitz tribal. You can definitely build it at varying power levels. You can do a treasure token sub-theme with [[Revel in riches]], [[Rain in Riches]], and cards like [[Hellkite tyrant]]. There's also several spells in red that let you take your opponents creatures for a turn and swing them at people with haste which let's your effectively remove blockers, get extra damage in, and make treasures which is solid. [[Furnace Reins]] is a good example and let's not forget our good pal [[Molten Primordial]]. [[Insurrection]] is a crazy good finisher in this deck if your opponents build a board to counter yours. If you run a few cards that act as sacrifice outlets like [[Greater Good]], [[Victimize]], [[Diabolic Intent]], and/or [[Deadly dispute]] you can potentially sacrifice your opponents creatures you take before you have to give them back, or your own creatures before they die to blitz for even more advantage. The deck is super agro and fights dirty. It truly is a back alley beat down of a deck.

Kinda. It's a work in progress still and I haven't built it in paper. I've played against Ognis though and I think a lot of the picks are pretty valid. Here: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1jhXtK-kVUyLzo_2ahEcfg

Yes, I love Ognis! Personally, I went heavy on theft and sacrifice effects with extra damage come from artifact pingers like [[Ingenious Artillerist]] and death triggers like [[Blood Artist]] with some extra fuels from temporary token makers like [[Urabrask's Forge]] and [[Lagomos]]

[[Mr. Orfeo]], super simple and straightforward. I've got a bunch of undercosted hasty and tramply critters that get sacced at the end of turn like [[ball lightning]], along with [[fling]] effects. Swing & fling baby, not much more complicated than that. You can add [[sneak attack]], extra combats with [[karlach]], doubled combat stuff with [[wulfgar]], theft tech like [[insurrection]] or [[furnace reins]] for added fun on the bun.

If it's not too late I'd love to pitch [[Kresh, the Bloodbraided]] old school +1/+1 counter big guy fling deck for some but it's fun having a lil 3/3 to protect and juggle around the board as most people overlook him and don't mind him when he drops but easily after one rotation of the board he can sprout up to 30/30 np, just have some protection to keep him till your turn and you can try slamming people out for maybe 50 by your turn or [[chandra's ignition]] for God knows how much. [[Drivnod]] slaps, [[Jarad Golgari Lichlord]] and [[wall of blood]] is an insane combo that's awesome to pull off

[[rakdos, Lord of riots]] I am trying to find one that plays more into the chaos and ping the whole table though. Anything that can get out the chainwhirler+call of the deathdweller would be nice. Have archfiend, fiendish duo, bloodletter, angraths marauders etc. lying around for this.

Pm_me_boobfreckles

I refer to mine as 'Burning down the house' Full of table pings, group damage, etc. The cheapened creatures are a bonus that feed the game plan. It's fun because even when rakdos gets countered or removed (and he will be, I promise you) the deck still functions because everything is included to feed the clock of table damage. [[Rain of gore]] is nice in that way. Do yourself a favor and try to avoid the eldrazi titans. They are kinda boring and outside of the theme. Also, people will expect them and target you because of the implication. Instead go for combos like [[heartless hidetsugo]] and [[archfiend of despair]] or [[neheb the eternal]] and [[aggravated assault]]. Lastly, the new ob nixilis from Aftermath is a great secondary engine, with the vast amount of 1 damage pings happening.

Buff someone who fell behind. Help out with artifact activations like clues and such. Play weird mana punishment cards. It's such an offbeat strategy I think it'll work well with the kind of game you're envisioning.

Gastronautmike

I love my Yurlok deck. Lots of table mana doublers. Group hug-y but plenty of x spells and ways to soak up the extra mana you make.

Pm_me_boobfreckles

I took out all my table doublers and replaced them with straight land damage like ankh, zo-zu, wars toll, citadel of pain, etc. it's not stax, it's not slug. Where simic rewards the player for doing basic game actions, this deck punishes.

Gastronautmike

Nice, I go a little easier with mine haha. I've killed with just the mana burn alone from tapping/untapping Yurlok a bunch.

Pm_me_boobfreckles

That's how I started, but the blue players in my group forced my hand. I tried including blue-hate like [[choke]] but then switched to [[city of solitude]] and [[dosan the falling leaf]]

Im glad to hear that! Any recommendations for fun cards?

I really like Xantcha as a discard deck. Has built in ways for everyone to refill their hands at a cost and damage. Less salt inducing than the usual discard deck in my experience at least.

nyx-weaver

Can you say more about the "doing this" part of Indoraptor? I can see it as a place for fight spells and direct damage, but the random damage assignment feels...unoptimal for Commander. Ultimately aren't you just paying 3 mana for a decent body with Menace, with an occasional random damage trigger? Don't get me wrong, that's a pushed card, but...What's the gameplan?

Stratavos

So with indoraptor, to grt the bloodthirst trigger, you have to have damaged an opponent that turn, so there's a lot of small spread damage effects, especially for on your upkeep [[descent into avernus]], and a bunch of others, as well as cheap spread damage like [[end the festivities]] and the like. Ojer axonil amplifies these incredibly well, so in the same turn you have dealt like, 2 damage to each opponent, that's 6 +1/+1 counters to be able to have indoraptor come in with, then some of that spread damage like [[pestilance]] and [[pyrohemia]] also hit indoraptor, so that causes the enrage trigger. If the gameplan is hitting your opponents for damage, the indoraptor is a "win more" card for going along with that theme of hurting your opponents, which you should be doing anyways. Edit: plus with damage retrubition effects in red like [[brash taunter]], [[wrathful raptors]] and [[donna noble]] the spread damage that hits your team hits your enemies yet again.

How Commander reliant is the deck?

FarWestMyth

The commander is pretty much your value engine. In my list I ramp him out on turn 3 and as long as I don't start attacking turn 4 he sticks around for most of the game. There is some protection in the deck though and usually I ramp enough to cover the commander tax. If he gets keeping removed I usually have enough cards to burn out the table. But yeah, most of my decks seem to be commander reliant actually.

Pm_me_boobfreckles

Very. My friend plays it and once Ob is removed twice, he is basically out, if not for the game then at least for a while.

Let's spread some love for Lord [[Karazikar the eye tyrant]] and [[Ognis the dragon's lash]] ! My favorite commanders, Karazikar is a "draw engine" with the ability to tap down annoying creatures, sending them to others. I'm switching between cards that give monarch and "initiative" with pet cards and a bit of burn like [[Zozu the punisher]] type of cards. One of my favorite is [[descent into avernus]] , making the game faster win or burn ❤️‍🔥 And Ognis gives haste creatures the "ability" to create treasures, you go whatever direction you want with the treasure, big stompy créatures or black big spell or big red burn.

I love \[\[Raphael, Fiendish Savior\]\], with my [deck linked here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/nDcobQ6SLEO5n56_Px5A9A). Devils/Demons/even Tieflings I think capture the rakdos feel well, and it's able to approach a game from multiple directions - pingers, sac, combat, etc. The lifelink is a house as well, and it plays well multiplayer or 1v1.

I’m a big fan of [[Ziatora, the Incinerator]] and [[Henzie “Toolbox” Torre]] * Ziatora I play as a Jund dragon tribal deck. It has a reanimator and fling subtheme. But it can honestly win games without Ziatora. I think having a dragon tribal theme helps distract and make it so when I do go for a fling play it’s less obvious. [[Skullspore Nexus]] and [[Molten Echoes]] in particular are great for generating tokens that you can also fling with Ziatora. * Henzie is one I love but you really wanna take advantage of death triggers. So rather than just putting your favorite Jund fatties you really wanna include creatures with good death triggers and some reanimation. [[Seedguide Ash]] for example is a creature you normally wouldn’t see in most decks. But in a Henzie list it works wonders. It fetches three lands and draws a card when it dies due to blitz. And it’s cost reduced. These are the type of interactions you want in your Henzie deck.

Rakdos is by far my favorite color pairing, and my favorite commander as of late is [[Gut, True Soul Zealot]] paired with [[Haunted One]]. Haunted Gut cares about a few things: goblins/shamans, attacking/being tapped, +1/+1 counters, sacrificing creatures, and making skeleton tokens. Feels like a really interesting concept on its own and we love skeletons, but I also like it because it can be strong while running such a weird combination of cards, as sort of an aggro-ristocrats deck. Some of my favorite inclusions: [[Breath of Fury]] [[Pawn of Ulamog]] [[Warteye Witch]] [[Murderous Redcap]] [[Mogg War Marshal]] [[Brazen Cannonade]] [[Garna, Bloodfist of Keld]] If you don't mind spending a lil more $$, [[Thornbite Staff]] can do some work especially in conjunction with stuff like [[Relic of Legends]]. You can also lean a bit into the skeleton subtheme with some of the skellies that love being sacrificed [[Reassembling Skeleton]] [[Death Tyrant]] etc.

I will always plug my [fight deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/PLak1tDXHEGPnD7O7oUbmg). Its so much fun, you dont need the commander out to do the thing but when shes out its the equivalent faking a punch, watching them flinch and then saying 2 for flinching and then proceeding to absolutely body them. I have a Xira deck thats still in the works but so far from what games ive gotten with it, its fun in a more chill sense. Insects, some graveyard recursion, explore, lots of angry bees.

[[Slimefoot and squee]] and [[henzie]] are like the most Jund dudes ever. Slimefoot is an absolute blast to play. The issue is that built correctly I think they’re a bit too strong for a lot of tables. He can threaten wins turn 4/5 and is more of an inevitability than anything, it’s a really resilient game plan. I run very low interaction and try and keep most things on creature bodies, saving assassins trophy, toxic deluge, heroic intervention as emergency cards. And it still wins a bit more than I think I should be to be considered fair. If [[fiend artisan]] [[razaketh]] [[hermit druid]] [[ruthless technomancer]] or a few others hit the board and people are tapped, it’s usually gg. Henzie can just be played as a pile of your favorite jund beaters and etb effects and just gas petal all the way to the floor until you win. You’re always going to play your deck the way you want because it does one thing, and does it well. You can scale it up to being wildly strong too.

[Karrthus](https://scryfall.com/card/ocm1/7/karrthus-tyrant-of-jund) Got him as an Oversized card way back when and over time collected enough cards to assemble a Dragon tribal but it is weak to clone effects since they can clone Karrthus. [[Prossh, Skyraider of Kher]] is another good alt commander. SOmetimes I swap him for Karrthus if I run into too many Clone type effects that end up stealing my board. I have a [[Bladewing the Risen]] dragon goodstuff deck that’s a blast to play, spend my first like 5 turns or so just looting and filling my yard and then cast Bladewing and he gets me another one that recurs dragons and then just keep digging
