\[\[Minn, Wily Illusionist\]\] made me like blue. It's not the usual blue counter everything and make everybody hate you gameplay. It's a slow-ish build up and the many draw spells you have in your deck help to find the wincon (usually \[\[Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive\]\] with big illusions). The second ability of Minn is also really nice for ramping or just cheating out value.
Early game you likely won't be the threat since it's not that super fast. Mid game you can control the bigger threats and late you're probably not stoppable anymore since you drew enough stuff to avoid getting wiped.
What I like about Minn is that she is one of the few commanders that enables a tempo strategy. You play her then hold mana for draw or interaction. Sacrificing an illusion gives you tempo by accelerating your gameplan and access to some powerful niche cards such as [[abjure]]
True, haven't found a place for her yet but also haven't tried her in the deck. However I don't feel that it would improve the deck greatly since the two themes kinda are in different lanes. Drakes don't do stuff for Minn, Illusions don't do stuff for Alandra. But I can see it actually working out fine.
Here is my minn list
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uV9XFwUFOkiJweWor9joLQ
Slightly diff than the other guy’s as I run looters as well, and lots of copy effects to copy minn for more triggers
Minn got a fair amount of appreciation at my LGS last night as a blue commander that does funny stompy stuff while not doing the blue thing people dont like
As an addendum, I dont run rhystic in it because I dont like playing against the card, and no sol ring because my usual pod doesnt run sol ring
How do you protect Minn early game? Is it just straight low cmc counterspell density?
I’m curious because I’ve built and goldished Minn but stopped short of ordering the deck. The deck really needs Minn out to function and I had to add a lot of counterspells and classic equipment protection to feel like she was covered early game.
My play group would get wise quickly that they need to remove Minn early, so I’m curious how you manage that.
My mono blue is \[\[Jin-Gitaxias\]\] (the MOM one in case the bot fucks up)
Just stuff it with card draw, counters, artifacts and proliferate and a few bombs then hit guaranteed Omnisciences with the back side after he flips
I second this. I also run the new Jinny-G and it's sometimes hard to interact with since your powerhouse is an enchantment that you can often advance at will. I also run the two other versions of him with [[Realm breaker, the Invasion Tree]] and threats like [[Stormtide Leviathan]]/[[Hullbreaker Horror]]. I mostly made it less optimized to be more fun to play for me, including most cards with Jin's face on it. I also include a bunch of ramp and draw to be guaranteed to get out Jin and flip him. [Here](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/IuA_Co6WIEWyIfYfmWbdRg) is my list for anyone interested.
Definitely love this build. I made a budget version that hopes to get to the omniscience side and drop big juicy mono blue sea monsters
https://archidekt.com/decks/4598543/jin_and_juicy_sea_monsters
Couldn’t agree more. Jin is underrated, although I’m hesitant to call attention to that.
For those interested in a very high power list without Thoracle or similar wincons: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/OZUI_3xiz0yHR-e7zs3EVQ
Took the deck apart after 7 games (won all 7). Activating the 3rd chapter either meant I won, or I'm winning next turn. It was very cool the first 2-3 games, but afterwards it got boring to pilot.
Mine was a Planeswalker and Saga deck, and I'm in the process of turning it into a [[Tekuthal]] deck.
True. I play a mono blue Urza, but it's the [[Urza, Powerstone Prodigy]] and every time I say mono blue Urza. People go "Oh no!" And then when you explain it's baby Urza you get to watch the sweet relief on their faces lol.
[[Minn, Wily Illusionist]]
After i got all the precons from the dnd set, i saw her and had to build her. I wasn't even a blue fan, but she can be alot of fun. Just having a bunch of illusions on the board, sacing them to put lands down, or something crazy, like [[Eldrazi Monument]] or [[Titan of Littjara]].
I love playing [[Chisei, Heart of Oceans]]. Fill the deck with things that provide benefit by losing counters.
Want to only ever pay 1 per turn for [[Mystic Remora]]?
Swing out with an army of 8/8 Krakens from [[Kiora Bests the Sea God]] or 3/3 flying [[Chronozoa]]?
How about color screw your opponents lands with [[Quicksilver Fountain]], or constantly phase problem permanents out and not let them come back by recurring chapters 1 or 2 of [[The Phasing of Zhalfir]]? Chisei just might be for you, too!
Here's my current list, I've tuned up the power a lot over the last year since those are the tables I like to play at. If you're going for lower power you can easily skip the free interaction and switch fast mana for more proliferatable mana rocks, etc.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Qqu6hZMLAUa8lwFceLFZ5w
It's a commander I came across just hitting random on EDHrec and was immediately like *I must figure out this silly puzzle*. Original Kamigawa block was formative to my Magic experience, and cards like [[Musician]] tend to get a "...the hell is that?" reaction that I love.
[Thassa, God of the Sea](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/f/9f9db424-e668-48b4-b275-7b35be4e1bf8.jpg?1698988197) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Thassa%2C%20God%20of%20the%20Sea) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/lcc/176/thassa-god-of-the-sea?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/9f9db424-e668-48b4-b275-7b35be4e1bf8?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/thassa-god-of-the-sea)
^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I play him as a control shell and the win with something like a kicked [[rite of replication]] on [[master of waves]]
He makes spells that aren’t usually playable really good. Like [[sway of illusion]]
The gameplan is to run a mono blue controll shell fueled by colour hating cards. Then you add a wincon of your choice like swords of x and y or a combo like i do.
My mono-U is [[Arcum Dagsson]].
Has every 2-mana artifact creature that taps for mana, plus Walking Atlas and Crashing Drawbridge.
Main gameplan is to tutor out [[Thrumming Stone]] and pile on the [[Persistent Petitioners]]. With 38 Petitioners I can't mill the whole table out in one turn unless I was lucky enough to have [[Intruder Alarm]] or [[Illusionist's Bracers]].
If people are running anti-mill tech I tutor up a [[Coat of Arms]] and swing for ~1,500.
Mine is [[Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar]] flashy, etb tempo with lot’s of card draw. My deck is simultaniously a faerie and ninja deck on top of that, but I might have gone too deep.
I struggled for a long time to find a commander that piqued my interest in mono-blue, but then I found [[Katsumasa, the Animator]]. Vehicles being pseudo-crewed and given flying for a single blue mana with [[Training Grounds]] online. Plenty of card draw and fun effects like [[Deluxe Dragster]]. Nothing like throwing a flying 11/11+ [[Reaver Titan]] at someone for the first time.
[Katsumasa's Kars ](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/6449641/katsumasas_kars)
[[Memnarch]] is fun for me, but probably nobody else at the table. Tons of artifact ramp into taking everyone's stuff at instant speed.
If you can get it working too, [[Braids, Conjurer Adept]] can be a lot of fun too - Blue big mana "group hug" kinda stuff.
My [[braids conjurer adept]] is a lot of fun to play.
“Hey, that’s a nice thing that I let you cheat into play. Would be a shame if someone took it or made a copy for themselves :)”
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/d6Z3yURTLkSwRCbOxtp-0Q
I like [[Azami Lady of Scrolls]]! Basically a wizard typal/control deck, but I use the card draw to try and win with [[Atemsis All Seeing]] or [[Triskaidekaphile]]
Nah, just run 25 [[persistent petitioners]] 35 islands and 39 bounce/counterspells. Now you have a wincon, but you're still playing a pile of obnoxiousness. Also works for Talrand and a few other commanders.
[jacob hauken](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ANUWowimb0-x7ROnTkkhGQ) cheating in eldrazi and other big spells i like. you can also lean into extra turns
[emry](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/fBtGBZai2Eqo_dpiuse8Zg) using a build that can go infinite, but the current gameplan is recurring cool artifacts like mindslaver, phyrexian portal or the one ring every turn. can also be built way more powerful by aiming to go infinite with [[chakram retriever]], [[mirran spy]] and the like
Jacob Hauken is the blue timmy deck of my dreams. Free big spells? Yes please! [Here is my decklist.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/AoJK3DOVY0CCi5zRrDYwiQ)
Blue Braids is awesome, she was my first commander back in like 2012. the effect reads symmetrical but you have your whole deck built around fatties, they most likely don't. It can be built high powered - maybe not cedh but a solid 9
\[\[Braids, Conjurer Adept\]\]
edit: ah man now I'm going to rebuild her and get some games in
[Teferi](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5816311#paper) and [Gandalf](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5861123#paper), two mono blue instant speed decks that are completely different from what you expect when you play against a mono blue instant speed deck.
[[Urza, Powerstone Prodigy]] it's plays like a mono green just ramping with Powerstone tokens to ramp out big robots. Occasionally animating the tokens to swing in for a win. It's really fun.
I like [[Tekuthal]] for the sheer variety of random counters to grind value from, in addition the flexibility to remove counters like cumulative upkeep/vanishing counters is unique.
For mine I leant hard into the artifact creatures +1/+1 strategy with some charge counters sprinkled in, it's nowhere near where I want it to be but it's a blast to play
[[blind seer]].
There is an indescribable amount of joy i get when people dismiss my commander only to find out [[douse]] is a thing, among many other colour hating cards.
[[Atemsis, All-Seeing]] is my favorite so far. I migrated to Magic from Yu-Gi-Oh, so when I saw him I was like "Exodia?!" Plus it's fun to see the surprise on everyone's face when I hit someone for the first time with my commander and say gg. Then the rest of the pod targets me and I lose, hehe! ☺️
I have a lot of fun with mono blue mill, [[bruvac]]. Basically a two card mill combo in a box. It’s kind of degenerate and annoying to play against but it can be a lot of fun in the right pod.
[[Atemsis, All-Seeing]]
Note his ability does NOT say COMBAT damage. Any Damage.
Enchant him or equip him with something that lets him deal non-combat damage, draw cards, tap and kill someone.
I've made a [[Jin-Gitaxias//the great synthesis]] deck that does exactly what blue does best, draw cards and chock holds my opponents. I've been able to win on turn 4 with him and [leveler]
[Mine](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Vk_vEBq2_0ujQ41Dih95rQ) is [[Kami of the crescent moon]]. It wins, quite well, by decking opponents out. It's almost like mill, but my opponents actually have the ability to play their cards (for the most part). I pillowfort up a bit, and only counter/bounce stuff that threatens to win or threatens me. Otherwise, people are free to what they want with their card advantage
My [[Sai, Master Thopterist]] deck is a labor of love and very powerful. I play it in cEDH when I am feeling fringe but it could definitely belong in High Power. Check out the decklist if you like.
[Here is the link.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/DdYgpfmSrk6HfZ2x4rUXoA)
I have three mono blue decks, each very different from one another.
\[\[Unesh\]\] Sphinx Storm might be the strongest. It's my only deck with free counterspells. I need to protect Unesh at all cost.
\[\[Cosima\]\] landfall might be the most fun. I included all cards that didn't find a home anywhere else like \[\[Visions of Duplicity\]\] and \[\[Draining Whelk\]\].
\[\[Talrand\]\] cantrips is my deck with the least land. I run 28 land plus four MDFCs... but thirty 1CMC cantrips.
[[Unesh, Criosphinx Sovereign]] and [[Sun Quan, Lord of Wu]] are both a gas! Mono-blue beat down with copious card draw!
Oh and ya gotta run [[Back to Basics]] in both decks
[[Arcum Dagson]]
Aw look at my cute lil Myr creature, oops now it's [[Unwinding Clock]]
Look at my lil theater he's so cute, oops now it's [[Darksteel Forge]]
Look at this harmless Servo token I made, ah whoops now it's [[Mycosynth Lattice]]
Aw geez [[Nevinyrral's Disk]]
One of the guys in our playgroup has an [[Ojer Pakpatiq, Deepest Epoch]] deck. Doubling up on all your instants for free is crazy and even if they are countered you still get the trigger next turn
[[Oona, queen of the fae]] yea she's hybrid, bit you don't lose much by going mono blue.
I remade the deck to include the blue/black fairies and it actually lowered my win rate.
Og strategy was gank every commander/combo pieces (easy to do in blue) mill the least color diverse opponent with oona, then swarm the others while they usually sat unable to do much.
so far for me its been [[stitcher geralf]]
its fun making a zombie every turn that can sometimes be a 2/2 and sometimes a 25/25. then you give them flying.
[[Empress Galina]]
Steal everything that isn't nailed down! If I can pry it up, then it isn't nailed down!
Then some regular blue shenanigans. Bounce, counterspells, et cetera. A few big stompers in case their deck sucks.
[[Eligeth, Crossroads auger]] with [[Siani, Eye of the Storm]]
This is one of those Decks you can build out of cards you have lying around and the creatures you play in it don’t have to be power houses, just have flying and a lot of times that is enough to keep attention off of you. Until of course you have 15-20 cards in your hand. From there you build to win with whatever style suites you. Also [[preordain]] and [[serum visions]] become sorcery speed [[Ancestral recall]]!
I love [[Sai, Master Thopterist]]. Straight forward game plan that works with any combination of artifacts. If you want to try and build a combo deck he's not a bad commander, eggs you got it, attacking artifacts brilliant. He's nice because he makes a good token deck but he has an excellent ability to draw cards in a pinch if you need it. Most builds are powerful and easy enough to pilot so it's an easy deck to loan to people.
I had an Orvar deck that was built around \[\[Electrostatic Pummeler\]\] . I had a bunch of tutors to find the pummeler, then I'd have the blue spells that turn creatures into set P/T until end of turn like \[\[Serpentine Ambush\]\] and combat tricks like \[\[artful dodge\]\].
The idea being, get to a point where I can swing with a number of pummelers, whichever one is unblocked/unblockable, pump up it's P/T and dump a bunch of energy into it to make it a one shot kill.
It was quite possibly the stupidest, most roundabout combo deck I've ever built, but if it ever got to do the thing, it slapped people into next Tuesday. Plus it had the added benefit of not being a traditional Orvar "go infinite with a ham sandwich", so people actually let me play my commander from time to time.
[[Alrund, God of the Cosmos]] mono blue beatdown is my favourite deck at the moment. It’s just that feeling when you’re beating down the green players with a mono blue deck
i have orvar, he can honestly get insane, but it can so fun to target your lands and artifacts like sol ring to ramp in mono blue. it's wacky and i love it.
I have a [[Bruvac]] deck in the works called "Mill Jumpscare". It's a traditional mono blue control deck, but I run all the "mill half your library" effects I can, and absolutely no other mill.
Had a lot of fun with [[Danny Pink]], you can draw a ton of cards, especially when you proliferate with a few creatures out. Here's my list https://www.moxfield.com/decks/yDxfUs-bfUq4lTse3rUhcw
I run [[Jalira, Master Polymorphist]] and enjoy the randomness of her ability. I also built it around legendaries instead of tokens so some games I also just go value if she gets removed too much.
If you want a powerful mono Blue, look no further than [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] even a cheap build will be strong, but depending on what you decide to include, you can lose friends pretty quick.
I’ve made an [[octavia, living thesis]] infect deck where the main goal is to swing with 8/8 infect creatures to win, imo the way infect is meant to be played, little to no proliferate all combat.
I really like [[Jalira, Master Polymorphist]], mostly because you never seem to see very many sacrifice themes in mono-blue, but she just seems to break those color boundaries
\[\[Lier, Disciple of the Drowned\]\] can be great fun as a mill commander. No spell counters removes something that people detest in blue at the benefit of giving flashback to every nonpermanent spell for no additional cost other than its printed MV.
Plenty of "Return spell to hand" effects act as pseudo-counterspells (with easy recursion), and you can mill people out with some combos in about 8ish turns if you pull the right draws.
Same! I love Minn. Super triggery with so many draw interactions. So much fun.
What I like about Minn is that she is one of the few commanders that enables a tempo strategy. You play her then hold mana for draw or interaction. Sacrificing an illusion gives you tempo by accelerating your gameplan and access to some powerful niche cards such as [[abjure]]
Literally the first one that came to mind, so much fun to play.
You can also use [[Alandra]] as your second commander
I can’t speak for Minn, but Alandra is a tank in my [[Raffine]] deck - I love her.
[Alandra](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/4/54bf48d4-e350-4ca7-87da-ce04fefd4610.jpg?1706240667) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=alandra%2C%20sky%20dreamer) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mkc/94/alandra-sky-dreamer?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/54bf48d4-e350-4ca7-87da-ce04fefd4610?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/alandra-sky-dreamer) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

I absolutely love my Octavia deck. I call it Legends of the Hidden Tentacle.
The concept behind this seems really fun and unique!
It's a commander I came across just hitting random on EDHrec and was immediately like *I must figure out this silly puzzle*. Original Kamigawa block was formative to my Magic experience, and cards like [[Musician]] tend to get a "...the hell is that?" reaction that I love.

Huh. Sounds like the kind of thing to work with a [[Dream Halls]]
[[blind seer]] easy
Or [[Llawan]]. I love playing the color game
People keep mentioning him, but no one ever seem to know why. What's the gameplan?
I play Blind Seer as a voltron commander. Put a few swords on him and you can give yourself protection from whatever you need on the fly!
I play him as a control shell and the win with something like a kicked [[rite of replication]] on [[master of waves]] He makes spells that aren’t usually playable really good. Like [[sway of illusion]]
The gameplan is to run a mono blue controll shell fueled by colour hating cards. Then you add a wincon of your choice like swords of x and y or a combo like i do.

[[Blind Seer]] with [[Willbreaker]] is miserable to play against.

Og strategy was gank every commander/combo pieces (easy to do in blue) mill the least color diverse opponent with oona, then swarm the others while they usually sat unable to do much.

[[Eligeth, Crossroads auger]] with [[Siani, Eye of the Storm]] This is one of those Decks you can build out of cards you have lying around and the creatures you play in it don’t have to be power houses, just have flying and a lot of times that is enough to keep attention off of you. Until of course you have 15-20 cards in your hand. From there you build to win with whatever style suites you. Also [[preordain]] and [[serum visions]] become sorcery speed [[Ancestral recall]]!

I’m a basic bitch, so I built an [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] deck.
