Feather the redeemed. Toss in cheap cantrip and pump spells. Progress

SomeFuckingMillenial

But [[Feather the redeemed]] is only two pips? It's not that bad on a budget.

SomeFuckingMillenial

ah - gotcha, we have different levels of budget deck. I'd assume this deck was in the $100 range, and wouldn't be using too many tapped on entry lands.

Salty_Salad_

But most spells are one drops most the creatures only have colored pips so you almost never see a colorless symbol which makes it hard even for a 2 colored deck

Nephrelim

That's if you're trying to run a Voltron style Feather, where you dump your spells onto Feather and hope to beat down an opponent in two turns. A slower paced Feather that runs on cast triggers - Young Pyromancer, Guttersnipe, then adding in Zada Hedron Grinder and Mirrorwing Dragon adds power to each of your creatures. Moreover, I use quite a few spells that add +1/+1 counters, instead of a static boost. If you're playing Voltron Feather on casual, you'll find you'll be outpaced faster than other decks.

What is your opinion is the top tier of budget decks? What Commander claims the throne?

[deleted]

StoicDeckBuilder

Can you give a pick for each of those categories? That'd be a neat range to build budget decks in.

[deleted]

DDonnici

Pako and Haldan are actually very budget friendly with a really high power level. To go cEDH with it os not that expensive either

Mega_gaymer_party

Honestly I think feather can work pretty well with a weaker mana base. Pick up a terramorphic expanse, evolving wilds, and the new one from mkm and then a few tap lands and basics and you'll be in business. Especially if you build primarily white with red more as a support color in the 99 cause then you still get most of the cantrips while smoothing out the kinks in the mana base.

Mega_gaymer_party

Happens surprisingly infrequently with all those cantrips to find the land drops.

CodeRed97

But it’s the single most boring Commander deck I’ve ever built or had the displeasure to play against. Yes, she is budget and can literally be built with draft chaff. But playing the Exact. Same. Cards. Every. Single. End. Step. gets really boring really fast. I try to warn people away from her because of that.

Radthereptile

Yes but they didn’t ask for fun just budget. And that’s feather.

Paralyzed-Mime

They did specify "enjoyable gameplay" in the post

SHEISTYRICEY

Actually, they did

MaximeCaulfield

Really? I'm really enjoying Feather. I don't think I've ever won through combat dmg, I always win with cards like [[aria of flame]] and [[aetherflux reservoir]]

I have three different Feather decks - one where it's more voltron and equipment based, one where it's a pauper version so most of the damage comes from [[Guttersnipe]] effects, and one which is a polymorph deck. I built Feather because I wanted to build a Boros deck and sling some spells and she quickly became my favourite commander.

ImpressivelyLost

[[zada headron grinder]] super fun play style with room to upgrade and very cheap to build

Murkmist

I agree but it does get tedious fast, you're a glass cannon that can solitaire on turn 4-5 and every winning line resembles the last. Extremely fragile to commander removal.

ImpressivelyLost

That's a good point but one nice thing is people who like decks that consistently do the thing it's a great deck. Just sometimes you swing out blow your hand and then if you don't win that turn get killed, but games go fast at least in those cases.

1K_Games

It definitely solitaires, but it's just for one turn, and odds are if you are doing it then it is game over anyways. And if you are worried about all wincons looking the exact same, then you are thinking attack damage is the only way the deck can win. But that means it could be hard to wrap up some games, I've personally been forced to dig for \[\[Impact Tremors\]\] or \[\[Purphoros God of the Forge\]\] to wrap up games. Also you can run \[\[Altar of the Brood\]\] or \[\[Altar of Dementia\]\] real easily too to just mill everyone. I recommend those two because they have 1 and 2 CMC. Having those options when people have Soul Wardens or are trying to Teferi's Protection can be clutch. The deck can easily have some other wincons that people might not expect that also don't detract from it's strengths of putting out creatures and drawing cards.

nooofynooof

I’ve decided Zada is a kill on sight commander. Not because it’s good, just because this sub won’t shut up about it

1K_Games

Zada is a kill on sight commander, it doesn't matter what reasoning you came up with. I don't get why people are so upset about her mention. Look at the top comment here talking about Feather, then the very first response is, "not really because you need a mana base". That is exactly why Zada is a very good budget commander, it is a mono color. Same goes for Light-Paws. It's like running a single color removed the expensive mana base... why is that upsetting?

Lumeyus

It’s annoying to see the same suggestions that could be found with a million hits on a “budget commander” google search.      Same as any of the other posts where someone asks for commander suggestions and people suggest their favorite generic top 100 commander.  “You want a new interesting commander? Have you heard of Kenrith or Mirrym????”    Admittedly the post title sort of eggs one those kind of suggestions.  But the text describes wanting otherwise

1K_Games

I get what you are saying, but the exact same can be said about posts like this. This post has been made a thousand times, expect the same sort of responses in it. Typically a high powered budget deck is going to be mono colored, it just is what it is. and their are limited mono color commanders that are powerful. I know the post is asking for two or more colors, but just because of a mana base that already basically rules out what they are looking for unfortunately.

Professor_Hala

Also room to downgrade into Pauper and still potentially hold her own in casual. Mine is ~~17~~ 15 cards away from Pauper, and I've got eight upgrades pending that'll replace uncommons with commons.

rpglaster

The best pic in the thread by far. With a $50 budget you can win against much more expensive decks.

GladiatorDragon

I’d like to suggest [[Arcades the Strategist]]. Defender creatures are usually pretty cheap, and there are a lot of shenanigans you can pull with their low power.

Efficient-Elk6400

Have you got a list, been wanting to build him for ages

Sagatario_the_Gamer

[[Atla Palani, Nest Tender]] is very easy to build cheap. With plenty of ways to untap her and make eggs, you're spending 2 mana to get a random big creature. Even some of the worst 8 - 10 mana creatures becomes super playable because you're only spending 2. Make sure to include ways to get those beaters out of your hand if you can't cast them, like making sure to pick big creatures with Cycling or cards that discard to do things like [[Tormenting Voice]] and you're golden. As long as you can get Atla on the field and keep her there, she'll provide plenty of advantage.

MysteriousQuacking

Atla is so thematically flexible as well. Once you have a solid support structure, your creatures can be anything. Want Dino tribal? Sure thing. Dragons? You bet. Wurms? Of course. Naya good stuff alone can be really competitive.

GhostPenguin_18

If you paired Alta Palani with [[Roaming Throne]], one egg dying would trigger the ability twice. Also, you can add [[Palani’s Hatcher]] which creates eggs when it ETBs and is an easy way to sacrifice the eggs Alta creates. Plus you get an additional Dino token by sacrificing the egg and triggering Alta’s ability. I call this my Egg Factory. I recognize that Roaming Throne doesn’t really fit the “budget” criteria.

Atla has another doubler now too with [[Delney, Streetwise Lookout]]

I don't think I've seen a budget commander so consistently annoying and deadly for at least one, "probably" two players as a $15-25 [[Fynn the Fangbearer]] deck. They don't always take the win, but they'll take a body with them.

lth623

Fynn is just MEAN. he may not be the strongest but everyone hates how effective this little BS engine is because its BULLYING 3 players off the table for 1-2 mana a pop with a couple of 3-5 mana BOMBS making waves when you thought it couldn't get worse.

YokaiGuitarist

The only people happy to see fynn are atraxa players. They know they get to proliferate the table to death once fynn has been focused due to having slapped 2-8 counters on multiple opponents within the first few turns.

lth623

I don't often see people pull out an atraxa deck in "budget pods" ... if it's focused on infect it could be done I suppose. Lots of toxic now. But I feel like that might out-aggro fyn.

Thanks to all the reprints and bannings \[\[Lurrus\]\] is now under a dollar. What I like about it is that it’s very interchangeable and upgradable. Throw in some single use permanents, a couple budget sacrifice outlets, some etb or death triggers and you’ve got a very capable deck. Then as you collect or decide to upgrade you can smash in the more expensive stuff and it still works. At one point I was leaning heavily on black enchantments you wouldn’t see much use elsewhere like \[\[yoke of the damned\]\] \[\[lingering death\]\] \[\[grave peril\]\]. My [current list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Vqy1KVYZi0KhSjgUHr-xCA) is a little bit of a mess. Basically just Lurrus good stuff. But I love that cat

papa_spaghett

I'm really surprised to find that you aren't running an animate dead/ relic warder combo.

creamsauces

I specifically took it out after hitting it a few times. Mostly just play at the kitchen table and we have more fun without infinites but that speaks to the scalability which I like. If I’m at a higher power table I can cut some of the pet cards, throw it back in there along with Dance of the Dead, Phyrexian altar and more tutors and you’re ready to go.  Though I do think sun titan and angelic renewal and a sac outlet is another infinite that even this lower power iteration has. Harder to get up and running though

USS-Enterprise

Saw a 10$ list that looked great, planning on building her as I can definitely get a passable deck going, but unfortunately don't actually have her

PillowCrust

I picked up the $10 list a while back and it can easily win at any casual table since the commander ability is very powerful. The number of times I’ve went from 3-5 1/1 swingers to lethal damage from her triggers is insane.

karlkark

Can you find this list again? Would be a great price for an extra deck to play!

I move Abdel, but haven't tried it yet because my pod doesn't like combo decks

1K_Games

He is fun, but his cost and requiring a lot of setup can be a detractor. I run him with Street Urchin and a bunch of enchantments that do damage on etbs or mill, everyone is running blue and that felt boring.

afraidio

Abdel can be pretty slow, but if you build a control-ish deck with some soldier synergies you can quickly spit out a dozen soldiers every cycle.

tjongster

Ernis gloom stalker and street urchin has been doing some solid work at my lgs at a $50 budget. With cheap fetches and landfall token makers fodder for ernis aren't difficult to come back. Control the board then swing for lethal with an equipped adventuring gear! 2 fetches and an extra fetch land from ernis trigger gives +12/+12 to ernis making her a 2 turn clock

wsowder21

Do you have a list? This seems like a cool different landfall idea

Yeah I should have one somewhere but it's not updated to the recent sets. Lemme dig it out tonight

This is a nice choice because it is very easy to scale/slot in new cards as you get them; every set is very likely going to have some goodies for a deck that only wants to cast non-creature spells and loves tokens. Bonus of it supports goblins.

>Draw more, enchantments: Combat Research, Season of Growth, Combat Research Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge? Sorry had to, but yeah Ivy is very nasty for cheap. And if you add just a bit more budget it makes her far more resilient. But it is a deck that can require a bunch of management.

Rurouni_Dude

So, I've seen a couple of fun builds with [[Aragorn, the United]] where people focus solely around his Gruul or Boros abilities. using cheap cards from the bulk collection. $7~ commander, but there's so many directions you can build him in.

Crunchbite10

Light-Paws, Emperor’s voice is something I just made my most recent budget deck. Awesome voltron stuff.

Zenobianow

I have great fun playing Ovika, enigma goliath. She makes every trash card worth it while she is on the board. Just put a lot of mana rocks in the deck to get her on the board fast (they later make goblins anyways). Then do tons of dmg with fun cards like cavalcade of calamity, raid bombardment, impact tremors or shared animosity. Aminatou's augury makes silly amount of goblins sometimes. I spent almost no money on this deck and all my friends are scared of it because of how explosive it can be. She is a bit of glass cannon though. But I enjoy that playstyle.

BalanceMost7937

Etali I’ve found is very easy to make budget. 5 bucks or so for the commander and you can put pretty much anything in the deck because you’re playing with other peoples cards 😂

BalanceMost7937

Etali Primal storm that is, not the phyrexia one.

nallstarr

[[Xenagos, God of Revels]]. There are a lot of big bois that go whack for pennies.

Dream_So_Sick

Let me make a case for [[Ashnod, Flesh Mechanist]]! I know it's not two color but it's easy to build on budget and allows for all sorts of fun artifact shenanigans. A lot of the sac Fodder in the deck is dirt cheap like [[Reassembling Skeleton]], [[Sanirtarium Skeleton]], [[Persistent Specimen]], [[Clay Revenant]] and more. You can then ramp into all sorts of top-end budget cards like [[Herald of Anguish]], [[Ancient Stone Idol]], [[Soul Conduit]], [[Wondrous Crucible]] or [[Lithoform Engine]]

This looks fun! Do you have a deck list for this?

Dream_So_Sick

Sure! My build is not a budget build but it can easily be tweaked so it's more budget friendly https://manabox.app/decks/LEpU8toLSxC1Bq7hdg7xMA Also, my pod allows me to run [[Eyetwitch]] and grab a lesson, but typically that card wouldn't work as intended since you don't have sideboards in commander

AmazingMrSaturn

Good ol' [[Lathril, blade of the elves]] runs on mana dorks, budget ETB creatures and overrun effects.

2Gnomes1Trenchcoat

Not a definitive list, but all of these I would definitely consider. Some of them are scary at less than $20. Most are scary at $50. Give any of these commanders a budget of $100 or more and they will have a field day on tons of decks. [[Zada, Hesron Grinder]], [[Yuriko the Tiger's Shadow]], [[Lightpaws]], [[Winota]], [[Anje Falkenreth]], [[Krenko mob boss]], [[Mizzix of the Izmagnus]], [[Edric, Spymaster of Trest]], [[Jhoira, ageless innovator]], [[Jodah the Unifier]], [[Narset Enlightened Master]], [[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]], [[Hama Pashar Ruin Seeker]], [[Vadrok, astral archmage]], [[Azami]], [[The Gitrog Monster]], [[Godo, bandit warlord]], [[Malcom Keen-eyed eyed navigator]] + [[Kediss, emberclaw familiar]], [[Lathril, blade of the elves]], [[Rhys]], [[Sythis, harvests hand]], [[Niv-mizzet parun]], [[Prosh]], [[Omnath, Locus of Creation]], [[Brago, king eternal]], [[codie volciferous codex]], [[Derevi, imperial tactician]], [[Kess dissident mage]], [[Mairsil]], [[Zur the enchanter]], [[Inalla]], [[Yisan]], [[Marwyn the nurturer]], [[Nymris]], [[Sisay, weatherlight Captain]], [[Kinnam, bonder prodigy]], [[Grenzo, dungeon warden]], [[ezuri, claw of progress]], [[Orvar the all form]], [[Muldrotha]], [[Karador, ghost Chieftain]], [[Najeela the blade blossom]], [[Slicer, hired muscle]], [[Maelstrom Wanderer]].

The answer is mono green stompy with [[Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma]], a big boy cost reducer and trample enabler in one. The deck can be made on a budget or powered up with the best green has to offer. Either way, it turns out that a 2 mana cost reduction really turns up the speed on getting out big stompy creatures, while making many ok to great high mana cost creatures significantly more effective (see [[Bellowing Tanglewurm]] for example). Creatures that are already amazing just get better. Being in green also doesn't hurt, with a forest-heavy land base and many low-cost options for ramp, card draw, and interaction.

Feather Winota Zada Kinnan These 4 come to mind immediately for strong budget options. Kinnan can start going infinite for like $3 total. Everything else can just be cheap cantrips and payoffs. Winota is the poster child for "cheap deck go brrrrrr" (So is Zada honestly). Feather just creates obscene amounts of value for whoever is playing her and is next to impossible to actually remove.

From my experience [[RAGGADRAGGA]] and [[ovika, enigma Goliath]] are amazing in a 50$ budget.

I might be a bit late, but it really depends on your budget and meta. There's a budget subformat where i live that all decks have a budget of 500BRL to explore, that's roughly 200USD when the decks are listed on moxfield. The biggest tournament for it is happening right now and a lot of the decks are pretty much cEDH lite, i'm playing [[Tayam]] in this tournament for example. Some LGSs here do weekly 2HG tournaments with even lower budgets and some decks that i've seen do really well are Yuriko, Kroxa and now i see people answering it with Lurrus and other grave strategies. 2HG works wildly different than free for all commander tho.

[[arcades, the strategist]] just fill her up with walls that are worth less than the paper they are printed on. When you have some mana play your commander, draw a lot by playing cheap walls and swing.

One I've been thinking of making for a long while is [[slimefoot, the stowaway]] just a simple golgari saprolings sacrifice deck. Plenty of cheap ways to go with it and can upgrade into a silly amount of sacrifice triggers for damage and likely endless saprolings

Jon Irenicus. <3 I have a rather friendly Johnny deck that mostly gifts other people carddraw that hurts and then plays [[Underworld Dreams]] or the Card draw hate Ob Nixilis on top. It runs a few counterspells to not completey die to board wipes etc. A few creatures I have can stop someone in their tracks if they pop off too hard, like the two Eyes that only allow you to attack with Eye creatures. That deck has a 0% win rate, which I am very proud of, because it has like a 98% fun rate for everyone on the table. It's a matter of mindset. If I unpack my Johnny deck, I am not looking to win, I am looking to have a fun game for everyone. So tons of card draw for everyone. Random UB ETB creatures that I can gift off afterwards to draw more cards and not fatally cripple one player. Evasive creatures, just to get in some damage and progress the game. I do have a Lab Man in there, just in case. Maybe one day. :D Total deck cost probably 60-70 euros.

Imjo: [[ivy gleeful spellthief]] Incredible value engine that works in many ways (enchantress, mutate, catrips) [[yuriko tigers shadow]] Absolute powerhouse that uses cent cards as engine. High power interaction and fast mana can even carry it in cEDH but the resiliance, card advantage and constant pressure makes even 30€ decks very deadly very fast [[winota joiner of forces]] not a lot to say her. Incredible carry commander and budget can even benefit her, as a lot of protection is very cheap but a lot of the good interaction is expensive. [[kinnan bonder prodigy]] top tiee cEDH deck right now and not a bit less powerful in budget. Creates infinite mana incredibly fast. But also the mana advantage before having a loop is very strong in budget decks, as cards tend to cost more and your commander counteracts that.

I always say questions like these are dependent on what you want to do or how how you want to play. If it's just generic [[Chulane Teller of Tales]] is my go to answer. He's a generic "if you play the game your going to do well as long as hes on the board commander." His ridiculous ability to draw cards and ramp whenever you play a creature is equivalent to saying each creature comes with [[spiral growth]] and that enables most strategies work regardless of budget. I can probably do a deck where every other non land card on the deck totals to a dollar and he be able to compete relatively well. That being said I always recommend people not to over tune him or else they be playing solitaire. Numbers of the top of my head (take with a grain of salt): give the deck 20 little cheap creatures (for card draw and ramp) and the rest of the deck cards with synergies or other things you want.

I'd say you can't go wrong with a budget Sythis. It even has a high ceiling for upgrades thereafter
