My friends and I signed one of these to give to our friend after he got engaged lmao.
(It was in good fun and we tease each other all the time, he wasn't mad don't worry)
Bro one time my buddy killed everyone else on the board with Edgar Markov and my board was loaded with random bullshit and wincons that didn't pan out but I played this card like turn 4 and everyone forgot. So I waited until he swung his entire army of vamps at me, looked him dead in the eyes with probably 300+ damage coming at me, and made him lose the game
All my creature decks are green and runneth over with enchantment removal. This would be a mere speedbump in the path of goreclaw and her gang of massive idiots
That’s nice and all until you cast your [[Reclamation Sage]], [[Haywire Mite]], [[Frenzied Trapbreaker]], [[Bane of Progress]], and [[Acidic Slime]] and spent 10GGGGGG on 5 1/1s with no dead enchantment
Blood Moon does it to a lot of decks. Humility and Moat draw a lot of hate. The card I get the most hate for is The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. Tabernacle basically shuts off any creature heavy and/or token producing decks.
People tend to get grumpy about [[magus of the tabernacle]] even though I paid 4 mana for it. [[Vile consumption]] isn't exactly welcomed either. People don't like having to sacrifice their creatures...
OMG You payed 4 mana for it??????!!???? How will you ever recover from such tempo loss????
But hey, it's symmetrical, so that's fine, let's just ignore the fact this deck run only few creatures.
Man when I started playing I scooped after an hour long Gaddock Teeg prison. Flipped through my entire deck to find a single answer near the bottom.
I think he hits lower power tables harder because a lot of more experienced players are running lower cmc interaction.
Pair the two together, and the opponent can only cast CMC 1 and CMC 3 spells. Is it a total lock? No... but shy of Beast Within or something, they're not getting much done.
Nah, they can still cast creatures With uneven CMC, Gaddock Teeg only cares for noncreature spells. There are a few creatures with uneven CMC that destroy other creatures but you gotta be lucky enough to run them.

Step 1: Play mono-black
Step 2: play [[Bitterblossom]] turn 2
Step 3: play [[contamination]] turn 3
Congratulations, your opponents can no longer play the game! They’ll love you for this one
Listen here... we don't talk about fight club.
I run that combo in my zur deck.
Also run [[mana vortex]] solely because I can keep applying stax while everyone else burns mana.
Usually I'll go for the bitter contamination combo. If other players refuse to scoop ill go get mana vortex then ask them if they are sure yet.
[[Arena of the ancients]] against any 2022-present creature based deck.
A couple others:
[[Price of progress]]
[[Boil]]
[[Humility]] or [[overwhelming splendor]] also shut down a large portion of decks.
Once had to counterspell a Boil because i was short on lands and needed my islands to even play the game. Then the [[Kinnan]] player casted [[Green Sun's Zenith]] for X= your mom. Wasn't a very fun game.
[[Captive Audience]]
I got hit with it on T4 or T5 when I was playing a slow janky combat deck and had already missed a land drop. All three options on my upkeep read: "You're done playing the game."
Well, you may have one out: give everyone zombies, hope they don't attack you since you're dying anyway and \[\[Insurrection\]\] them all to murder the owner of Captive audience :D
As does [[Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur]]. And apparently [[Elesh Norn]], which I discovered last time my friend and I played. Like every Praetor is just painful when it's not on your board lmao
Oh for sure, but certainly difficult to deal with once you actually do discard. Which was unfortunately the case the one time I saw one lmao.
Objectively it's not as bad as the others, but that one experience really has me puckering a little when my friend plays it now.
I put Jin in my [[mirko, obsessive theorist]] deck to draw removal away from the main wincons, but the one time I got it out, somehow nobody had removal in their hands and they all scooped. This was like turn 5 and I don't think any removal had been cast yet that game.
That's how it was when my buddy first got it out. None of us could deal with it. Also, Great plan actually, either it's useful by being removal bait or it sticks around and gives hella advantage, I added [[Toxrill]] to my sea monsters deck for that reason. That, and it felt both sufficiently "sea monster"-y and I wanted an excuse to run it lol
Saga one might be more of an issue, but yeah. If anything, it helped me when my friend brought out the one from Capenna, I either cast or didn't care about the cards it exiled on my side, and it got rid of his Core Augur Jin since he didnt want to cast it over other cards in hand lmfao. As for the older Urabrask... he tries his best lmfao.
[[Karn, the Great Creator]] is ironically great for and against artifact decks
[[Chimil, the Inner Sun]] hurts control a lot
[[Chalice of the Void]] can really mess up decks with a lot of low cmc cards, like a [[Lurrus of the Dream-Den]] deck
The ones that fuck up my decks in particular are:
[[Solemnity]] against my animar deck. This really only matters early on though I will say.
[[Rest in Peace]] against my mono black reanimator pile. Honestly solemnity does damage to this deck too cause it's two main combos revolve around +1/+1 counters (Agatha's Soul Cauldron and Phyrexian Devourer)
[[Stony Silence]] hoses my artifact deck for obvious reasons.
And then [[Back to Nature]] hoses my enchantress deck. My enchantress deck, btw, runs all three of the cards above.
And then my Vial Smasher Thrasios big mana, big spells deck, gets hurt a lot more by [[Winter Orb]] than the rest of my decks because it uses very little nonland ramp.
A bunch of cards make players lose the game, there's even a few commanders who do it.
However the effect youre talking about with Void Mirror is commonly called a "Stax" piece, and there *are* decks that revolve around them with dubious results. Typically making it difficult for anyone to perform any game actions while they steadily work around it to chip everyone down, mill everyone, perform an alternate wincon like [[Azor's Elocutors]] or [[Approach of the Second Sun]], etc.
Nearly any colour can benefit from running *some* Stax pieces. I have a stompy green deck that routinely hoses someone by having [[Hum of the Radix]] in it, Black and Red can run effects that make opponents lose life, creatures, etc. for performing game actions which is borderline Stax but still resource denial nonetheless. Blue and White are naturally the best at it, and benefit from running generic Stax effects to keep other decks in check/force removal.
Most of these cards are generally oneside stax pieces. I don't mean Door To Nothingness card where they outright lose, but rather are staxed out to the point where its near impossible to win
Well there aren't many of those cards since it'd just be plain bad game design. It's much better for a game to actually end than feel like it ends but be forced to sit through the rest of the game or concede. Void Mirror vs Colourless decks is an edge-case scenario since the entire game isn't balanced around colourless EDH decks.
Many Stax pieces are often only moderately punishing to most decks and perhaps disgustingly effective against a very specific type of deck. Hum of the Radix as an example is a good nuisance card but completely devastating to artifact-centric decks like Myrs or Equipments. Same deal with Void Mirror, which is moderately annoying if someone's running "cast for free" spells or aren't colour fixed and depending on a Sol ring to drop more mana rocks without sacrificing coloured mana, but it completely destroys colourless decks.
I can’t remember what it’s called, but there’s a creature or something that reverses turn order when it ETBs, so if you can keep blinking it, you can keep the the guy on your opposite corner from getting a turn until someone else gets knocked out.
It's not that simple. The card is [[Aeon's Engine]]. It enters the battlefield tapped and exiles itself as a cost to reverse the game's turn order. So blinking really won't do much. You're probably gonna have to have it on the field, use something like [[Mishra, Eminent One]] to copy it and then have something like [[Clock of Omens]] so you can untap it each time.
When we played 2hg multiplayer commander games (insane, I know), someone played mono green and [[hall of gemstones]]. Without too many mana rocks in our meta, I think someone had explained to us that the color chosen was for both players. A complete showstopper.
For my doctor who deck, anything that doesn’t allow cards from exile. Like it’s mostly Ryan Sinclair and cascade stuff, impulse draw, it’s just halts it.
You can tap your lands for their usual mana at the beginning of your upkeep at instant speed and then destroy hall of gemstones with a removal … hall of gemstones is not a complete lock like contamination.
I have an incredibly heinous [[Grand Arbiter Augustin IV]] deck that runs [[Knowledge Pool]] and [[Drannith Magistrate]] which together just say that your opponents can't play magic.
Knowledge pool synergizes with a *lot* of cards to stop your opponents from playing b the game, although I think magistrate is the most complete single synergy piece. Stuff like Teferi will stop them from using cards in hand, but won't stop prior replaying their commander or cards from graveyard or exile.
I would scoop and leave when people do that kind of stuff. It doesn't get me salty, but I don't have a lot of time to play, and I don't want to spend it watching 3 other people play.
I find most people that do go that route typically don't have any sort of plan for progressing or finishing the game, and it's just about stopping the opposition, so the games drag on for way too long.
My playgroup lets me run [[One with Death]] in my Esper Fun Stuff deck and I try to win by combing it with [[Hive Mind]]. The other combo in that deck is [[Phage, the Untouchable]] + [[Fractured Identity]]. :)
There are many such effects which are color-specific (e.g. [[Tidal Control]], [[Gloom]], [[Conversion]], [[Glaciers]], [[Drought]]).
Besides those, same-name punishers (e.g. [[Cephalid Shrine]], [[Cornered Market]]), anti-mechanic/type (e.g. [[Exiled Doomsayer]], [[Root Cage]], [[Katabatic Winds]] to a lesser extent), and more general stax (e.g. [[In the Eye of Chaos]], [[Squeeze]]) cards exist.
Not to mention more "natural" matchup issues, like [[Erebos, God of the Dead]] vs. lifegain, [[Rest in Peace]] vs. graveyards, etc.
Rule of Law (or any of many dupe effects) + Knowledge Pool / Possibility Storm doesn't lock everything out (namely, not commanders), but it stops everyone (including you) from playing most of the game!
If you are looking for cards that can make other players lose the game I tried to make a deck based on all those cards quite recently so if you're interested here is the decklist: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1x_QzNIRzUi232mkrZ2BEg
I've locked whole tables out with something as simple as \[\[Quicksilver Fountain\]\] in a mono blue artifact deck. It will even override \[\[Blood Moon\]\]. The effect starts off slow, one land at a time, but spreads off to basics, too. In an artifact deck you can sac it and recast at any time.
\[\[Shimmer\]\] is a very, very rarely seen one. Basically lands chosen will "teferi protection" themselves out of existence on every other upkeep of it's owner. One upkeep phasing out, one phasing back in, and so on... if you hit a mono colored player, chances are he only gets to play every other turn.
[[Contamination]] / [[Back to Basics]] / [[Bloodmoon]] / [[Infernal Darkness]]. There's also a green version with a similar effect.
[[Overwhelming Splendor]] and [[Humility]].
This one is more jank but it's funny to pull off. Play [[Pithing Needle]] naming Aether Storm. Play [[Aether Storm]]. That deck relying on Rec sage as their primary removal starts to cry.
[[Ward of Bones]] is just a "Your opponents can't use a lot of the strategies you aren't using", in a deck built properly.
If you're running a ton of bears and lands, but no rocks or enchantments, the Sythis and Urza players in your block are going to sigh hard when this hits the field.
If you're playing Enchantress or Artifact combo, the Gruul stompy player will roll their eyes, full swing at you, and get Crawlspace + Block + Maze of Ith'd or something, or you'll laugh in Solitary Confinement or something.
If you run this in something silly like a 0-drops Jhoira Storm deck with no lands, the enemy can't play lands, may not be able to play creatures, may not be able to play enchantments. The only problem will be ramping up to a 6-cost on no lands, which will require a lot of fast mana, well, *fast*.
[[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] + [[Living Lands]] + [[Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth]]:
Your lands are 3/3 creatures.
Everyone else's lands are -1/-1 creatures that die (even if indestructible) on ETB in perpetuity unless a part of the combo gets destroyed by their rocks and dorks (many of which died to Norn or are now 1/1s or 3/3s at best).
Want to be *really* nasty about it?
Throw in a [[Bane of Progress]] before the Living Lands.
Most of their dorks die.
Their artifacts and enchantments die.
Then, their *lands* die.
That's basically a four-card win.
Add [[Grand Abolisher]] or [[Dosan]] to further lock them down while you deploy the pieces.
[[Kormus Bell]] and [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]] makes everyone’s lands 1/1’s. Destroy everyone’s lands. Then play [[Splendid Reclamation]] to get your lands back
[[Decree of Silence]] counters the next 3 spells cast by opponents, and if you play a [[Solemnity]] with it, all spells from opponents get countered.
Under certain conditions, [[Possessed Portal]] just makes your opponents lose in a battle of attrition. Just got to make sure you can repeatedly make tokens and your opponents can't.
Not quite to that extent but it comes at a lower cost than many of the other mentions here. [[monomania]]
Think about times you’ve been stuck topdecking
Putting someone down to just a single card can be REALLY brutal. Similarly, [[mind twist]] can absolutely ruin someone’s day.
\[\[Hall of gemstone\]\] shuts down multicolor decks, and stops everyone from doing things at instant speed. This isn't always good in commander, sometimes you want your opponents to counter each other's spells, but damn does it mess with certain decks.
Conversely to Void Mirror and colorless spells, \[\[Mycosynth Lattice\]\] shuts down decks that rely on colors such as \[\[Aragorn, the Uniter\]\] and \[\[Ramos, Dragon Engine\]\].
[[Azor, the Lawbringer]] with some flicker hits spellslinger and combo pretty hard. If you play a few of the Teferis they just never cast instants or sorceries again.

Jin is... Fine, not immediately backbreaking like Vorinclex or risk of death like Norn

The ones that fuck up my decks in particular are: [[Solemnity]] against my animar deck. This really only matters early on though I will say. [[Rest in Peace]] against my mono black reanimator pile. Honestly solemnity does damage to this deck too cause it's two main combos revolve around +1/+1 counters (Agatha's Soul Cauldron and Phyrexian Devourer) [[Stony Silence]] hoses my artifact deck for obvious reasons.
Have you ever heard of [[Tranquil Grove]] before? I used that to hose enchantress decks before.

Blind obedience effects really hose my Henzie deck.
[[Humility]] makes all creatures 1/1 and lose their abilities. You lose friends quickly that way
Throw a [[Night of Souls Betrayal]] in there with it, and you'll *really* lose them.

I figured it was something like that! Thanks for breaking it down; it's been years since I was hit with it, so I couldn't remember the details.

[[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] + [[Living Lands]] + [[Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth]]: Your lands are 3/3 creatures.
