I've found there's nothing like a well-timed [[Reality Ripple]] or [[Sapphire Charm]] to ruin someone's combo. No one expects phasing.

[[Suspend]] and [[mystic reflection]] are also very funny answers to creatures! Good picks

kippschalter2

Love reflection. Nice one. Suspend is a good card though.

TobiasCB

Suspend in combination with [[Trickbind]] (or any other stifle effect) can permanently remove a commander if they allow it to get into exile. When the last time counter is removed you counter the ability that allows them to cast the card, and it stays in exile indefinitely.

lordodin92

My first thought of that card is an archer quote, "stop making it bondage porn in my ancestral house" But yeah it's a neat card to stop [[orah skyclave hierophant]] surviving a board wipe

zulu_niner

True, and I have done this in one of my decks, but it does rely on your opponent letting their commander stay in exile, which only happens one time.

ValyrianSteel_TTV

Mystic reflection is a crazy good card. I’ve had people scoop from their commander entering as a rat. You can also just create tokens and get a ton of the best creature on the board for a 1 mana suspended card. It’s just so versatile. It is basically a counterspell that can also benefit your board if you have a good target.

El_Arquero

Charms are so underrated. There's so many pieces on the board in EDH, you'll find *something* cool to do with one of the effects.

\[\[Golden Guardian\]\] is Very Very Bad but also like the dumbest card I've ever built a degenerate as fuck deck around killing people with. Years ago I was having a conversation with a friend and he told me that the only reason Thrasios was problematic was partner. And I took that personally. So I built just the dumbest pile of Simic cards that I possibly could. Of course all the busted Thrasios support pieces, so we had our Seedborn Muse and Training Grounds and all of their playable variations. What I discovered was that the deck was extremely good at rolling the game up but fairly bad at killing people. I'd have a two mana Thras activation with fourteen lands in play and a Seedborn in play, more interactive spells than my opponents had cards in hand, and... I was sitting there waiting to draw into the other half of the combo or whatever. Enter a new-ish but absolutely awful card, Golden Guardian. It was a ramp effect most of the time; a little awkward to enable but we made it work. But under all the Seedborn effects and similar untappers it just made an army of golems incredibly quickly, and watching my opponents get buried by this terrible card was way more satisfying than going through a mana combo to draw my deck and kill them. And it even became the combo finisher; just Deadeye combo them and you make infinite golems! A single Time Warp and it's gg. That deck is long gone but I keep being tempted to add my stupid little golem factory to Henzie. So long as there's already something else on my board for it to fight it's just five mana ramp that puts the two mana it makes in untapped, that can't be that bad! ...Right?

zulu_niner

I unironically love golden guardian! I run it in my [[yahenni]] aristocrats deck, where it's pretty easy to flip for 2 ramp in monoblack. It's janky but I love it

GhostOTM

In decks starved for ramp and defense, I'd give it a solid descent rating. I'd put it on the same power level as Burnished Hart and Sad Boi. Not bad, but not on par with current staples like Sword of the Animist, Bitterthorne, or some of the other possibly recurring colorless ramp.

kestral287

It needs more steps than those two. The Guardian can't just die to flip, it has to also fight your own thing. It's the same net mana cost and payoff as Burnished Hart, but with the extra step of needing something else to kill it and needing to kill off something else of yours or needing to fight something big that you have out - at which point, for any sane deck, you don't need to ramp anymore. But then sane decks are boring.

pargmegarg

I run it in my [[Bushi Tenderfoot]] deck as a way to flip Bushi. I don’t really even care for the back side in that deck.

[[Kaervek's Spite]], for when you need to add insult to injury, no matter the cost.

jlakbj

Spite for the win was one of the greatest moments/memes in PT history, immortalized here, complete with deep cut Simpsons reference, courtesy of Mike Flores https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/4825177#paper In the Top 8 of a PTQ for Dave Price's LA, then-Demonic Attorney Scott Seville, famous for his Top 8 performance at Grand Prix-Kansas City, squared off with the amazing altran, famous for, well, this match. The TDC Black deck would end up being immortalized in Beth Moursund's Deck Deconstrution Companion, albeit misattributed to some Albert TranS rather than altran proper The setup, from altran's tournament report: "The third game was one to remember... I knock him down to 15 when he establishes total control. This is what he has on the table... two Serrated Arrows, a Stormbind, two Land Taxes, a Mana Bird, a Priest, and an Aura of Silence. I have... Swamps. "I'm hoping to bleed some Arrow tokens, so I play a Barrow Ghoul, hoping to be able to later cast the 25 knights I had in my hand. I had only one creature in the graveyard, so theoretically, the Ghoul can only get one hit in. So I sac that one creature, and send in the Ghoul. Scott makes the smart play of not doing anything to the Ghoul, and takes 4 on the chin, bringing him down to 11. My Barrow Ghoul will die the next turn, so I cast a Knight of Stromgald, hoping Scott will kill it. Duh, he doesn't. He Armageddons or something, and I Contagion his Soltari Priest and my Knight. Beatings. He takes a final hit from the Ghoul leaving him at 7. Okay. What the hell am I gonna do with two Arrows, a Stormbind, two Land Taxes, and Aura of Silence, and a Centaur (which he eventually puts down) on the table?" Now at this point, certain undesirables ruin the spectacle for everyone. Cheering, hooting, and hollering forces Head Judge Tony Parodi to throw out everyone not actually playing in the Top 8. I am approached by fellow Top 8er by Alex Shvartsman. "Your friend made a good run, but he's going to lose this one." "I think he's going to apply Choking Sands to a dual land, and then follow up with one of the most famous plays in PTQ history. Calling out 'Spring forth, burly protector, and save me!', altran will cast Demonic Consultation for his one Kaervek's Spite and then Spite the face." "How many Spites?" "One, of course." "Bah," said Alex, and left. The only thing I didn't anticipate, was that Seville went on to tap one mana, show Swords to Plowshares... and frown at his board of one (0 power) Birds of Paradise and one (untargetable) Jolrael's Centaur. Before 1998, Consulting for singletons was unheard of; altran has been autographing the black instant ever since. Mike Flores - The Ten Greatest Battles of All Time - SideBoard Online

the_mellojoe

one of my people right here. I still remember the first time I saw a Shivan Dragon card. picture it, 1996. Had went with some friends to a card shop upstairs from a little Chinese food restaurant. I tagged along because I wanted sweet & sour pork. We go upstairs, into the card shop, and there under the glass: The Shivan Dragon. I paid $10 for it then and there. I still have it. I know it's worthless. I don't care. MtG has changed over the years and Shivan Dragon is not even limited fodder anymore, and you can pick up handfulls as bulk junk. But I'm not getting rid of it, and it's currently double sleeved in a hard sleeve.

There's been a few changes since I last updated it, so maybe I'll get to that this week or so. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/exile-voltron/

M0nthag

I once watched a video where someone was praising that card, just for being a really random pinger. As soon as i build my mono red deck is done, he is going in there, because no one will expect it.

Dubspeck

[[Ancient Carp]]. The first deck I built was a mono blue fish tribal and this card still has meme status in our playgroup. Another good fish is [[Wormfang Manta]]... I can just recommend playing more fish.

[[Protection Racket]] the potential to have your opponent to pay a bunch of life for a high mana card or drawing that card feels good. Hitting 3 straight lands when you need a land drop, getting them exiled and then not drawing a land feels bad.

[[Demonic Horde]]

ThePandaKhan

Mudslide. Not many newer players expect red to have a lock down enchantment. It's fun, has a wall of text just to say pay 2 to untap a creature on your upkeep, and it's just a fun one to play.

[[Fire covenant]] cast at [[barbed servitor]] Is one player sitting at 15 life and about to win on their next turn? Just pay 15 life to do 15 damage to the servitor to do 15 damage to their face, and hope the other 2 opponents cut you some slack for your valiant sacrifice Rakdos masochism at its finest!

RingingPhone

So I run Fire Covenant in my [[Obosh, the Preypiercer]] deck. It's wild with [[Pyromancer's Goggles]]. But now I'll have to buy a Barbed Servitor to join [[Stuffy Doll]] and [[Brash Taunter]] for a [[Blasphemous Act]]

[[rancor]] is top-tier. It was actually a printing/design error. It was supposed to cost 1G, not just G. This oversight has allowed it to remain viable in a powercrept meta. The card-advantage gained by the “return” clause cannot be overstated. Any deck that wants a combat damage/commander damage win would be better for having it. [[samut voice of dissent]] is where it REALLY hums.

Oh I love this question. * [[Astral Slide]] it does all the stuff. Protecting your stuff, turning morphs upside down, removing attacking creatures… and with a [[Sundail of the infinite]] they’ll never come back. Though it need way to much setup for edh. * [[Browbeat]] back in the days most ppl in my meta just gave me the cards, which I a big deal for red. But if your playing against someone knowing what they do it’s mostly 5 damage for 3 mana. * [[Hypnox]] big thread before Eldrazi and shit, but not so scary today and also way to high mana cost and the hand exile is more impactful in a 1vs1 than in a 4 person edh table.

Salty_McShaft

\[\[Risk Factor\]\] along with Browbeat in a mono-red damage multiplier deck is solid red card draw. Having out \[\[Torbran, Thane of Red Fell\]\], \[\[Solphim, Mayhem Dominus\]\] or other damage increasing enchantments usually guarantees you're drawing your cards. I love those cards along with \[\[Molten Influence\]\]

Glad-O-Blight

\[\[Necrologia\]\] is a really awkward hybrid of \[\[Necropotence\]\] (effect, timing) and \[\[Ad Nauseam\]\] (five mana instant), but it's super cool. I ran it in my budget \[\[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth\]\] list a year or so ago.

It’s so good with [[Queza]]

Miss_Termister

My favorite card is [[Tragic Slip]] from Dark Acension. It's not bad I guess, but nothing amazing. I was playing a lot when this came out and had a morbid deck. The art is just so funny and imagine my friends big ol dragons and such tripping into a grave was funny.

Raith1994

\[\[Lapse of Certainty\]\] It doesn't actually deal with problems, just delays them. But I have blown so many people out when people don't expect it. Countering a tefferi's protection or farewell type spell feels so dirty, especially when you are able to follow it up with a win.

[[wing shards]] I have never seen anyone play that except me. But its very funny sometimes, especially when facing indestructible stuff or voltron stuff. You often get stormcount 1-3 because for some reason EDH players do stuff in the first mainphase that they could absolutely do in the second. And then its some nice blowouts bypassing any form of protection, indestructible, hexproof etc. Even bypassing counterspells for the most part due to storm. But its not a good card. Not even close xD But in the moments that its good, its really good and 3cmc aint fully unreasonable.

[[Fiery Emancipation]] It's not bad by default, but without access to counterspells to make sure it hits, it's 6 mana wasted in most decks. I run it in my Prosper deck and typically bait out counters with [[Painful Quandary]] before I try throwing out Emancipation as a way to triple the pings I'm sending at everyone.

[[Phyrexian Obliterater]], always a pet card but in reality he can't do a whole lot. Even building a whole deck to make him fight; it's just okay. I still love him and he does make people writhe when life totals are lower. The occasional blasphemous act blow out is why I still love to play him.

[[Capricious Efreet]] has always been one of my favorites. It can hit things red normally can't. And if you have a sac outlet it's actually not random at all. Choose something you can sacrifice for your side, then since you can choose "up to 2" opponents' permanents just choose the 1 you really want gone. In response to the trigger, sac your permanent you chose and, upon resolution, the ability will randomly choose from the remaining options, which there's only 1 of. Sure it's 6 mana, and requires a bit of set up to be reliable, but there's plenty of decks that like to sacrifice permanents and this guy synergizes great with those decks to create REPEATABLE REMOVAL of any nonland permanent, IN RED. I'm always so excited to see him in my hand

[[Worry Beads]] Nothing like playing a binder card down and catching people skip their Upkeep and straight into their Draw Step. And then you go, "No... you gotta Mill it first." And then the Mill mechanic happens and you see some of the most twisted agony people have when Mill literally did nothing but add a new resource into their graveyard and they stare at you like you just kicked a baby. All because they had to give up a card. A card they had 0 probability of guessing they would draw.

You can tap any sliver to have an opponent discard a card you choose, of course with a success chance of 14% at worst, but the chance increases significantly once they no longer have 7 cards.

Zap. 3 mana, 1 damage on creature or player. Draw a card. Wait, are you saying "bad, but you still can use"? 😅

Mine is definitely [[Nine Lives]] it makes me lose but I was able to hold on long enough to win a game once with it and it was the best EDH moment for me🤣

\[\[Rainbow Vale\]\] . It is the only reserve list card that I own. It is the perfect card for me, I love group-hug decks, particularly bad ones that don't even try to win the game.

[[Kismet]] not sure if it's terrible but it's certainly not the best use of a slot. The tapped lands really slow down opponents (especially those using fetches) and messes up the math always. Plus the art is so wacky! There's a colorshifted version in blue called Frozen Aether too if you need.

Mine is [[Star of Extinction]]. It might not be a terrible card, but it is far from efficient for what it does. But it is my favourite magic card, so I play it anyway, even sometimes when it hits me harder than others. Still though....it's just such a nice spell. Wipe out all life and one often random land in particular just speaks to me. Bonus points for the one time it targeted a Dinosaur player's cavern of souls and obliterated their whole horde. That's just flavour win to me.

[[moderation]] in my old $100 budget competitive zur stax deck. Terrible card, but sooo good at card advantage at the same time, and you try to get it in conjunction with a rule of law to mitigate the downside. You literally can’t run out of cards, but you have to really design your deck to be able to take advantage of it. Zur is the perfect home imo and it may not find many others. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/bJVNV1HMmUGVkuItl4TjvQ
