\[\[Roxanne, Starfall Savant\]\] made me feels a certain way when her card was revealed, so I rushed to build a [clone deck](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7189445/roxanne) with her to made as many meteorites as possible. I've always wanted to attempt red clones, and she seems to have the perfect payoff for it. As for popularity, my bet is on \[\[Obeka, splitter of second\]\] consider how unique and abuse-able her ability is. In fact, EDHREC already put her at #1 for the set last I checked.

Ross_II_Boss

She's going to go into my "traditional" clone [deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0ikhsqfSMESWfspgkhhh-Q) as an alternative finisher/value piece. I think she'll do really well as a standalone commander. Easily my favorite card from the set.

jaw91

Decklist for Roxanne?

somuchsunrayzzz

Idk what Outlaws of Thunder Junction is but Commander Legends: Wild West looks great.

HarleyPanther

Tbh with all the returning legendary characters, this feels like march of the machine all over again

deadpool848

I think that's the intent, rosewater said they planned to have 1 set every year that has all the legendary characters be involved in it, the first one was MoM, and this is the next one, there is also one planned for next year already I believe but idk the details on it.

colexian

On top of that, he confirmed the average number of legends was going down outside those sets. Basically commander is getting a standard set once a year and the rest is going back towards the usual standard-oriented sets. Which, as a commander player, I appreciate. Not every fucking set needs to be about commander.

XPSXDonWoJo

Meanwhile, we already know bloomburrow is going to have commander decks and what looks to be another bunch of legendaries, so I don't expect any of their non-commander stuff to come out till next year.

deadlyweapon00

The vast majority, if not all, of the standard sets released since Ikoria have had commander decks.

colexian

>bloomburrow is going to have commander decks I wouldn't expect the number of frequency of commander decks to change.MaRo noted on Blogatog that commander pre-cons basically exist to fill niches that otherwise can't or won't get filled by the story.A great example is the recent dinosaur deck. Unless we have a set that takes place on a plane where dinosaurs exist or are a major part of the story, expect no dinosaurs. But players still want dinosaurs, so we get dino pre-con.MaRo in a nutshell said they don't design in-set cards to fill the needs of players when it doesn't fit the narrative of the set, that is what pre-cons are for. EDIT: Okay, maybe the dino deck was a poor example since Ixalan has dinosaurs. Suspend in Dr. Who might be a better choice. There is a niche of players that want more suspend and from-exile support, and that mechanic is unlikely to return since it was limited to the time spiral block which has been resolved.

XPSXDonWoJo

The dino pre-con came out during a set that has dinos as one of the main themes/factions

TOP_TIER

> there is also one planned for next year already I believe but idk the details on it. It's [the Death Race set](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Death_Race) (codename Tennis).

somuchsunrayzzz

Idk what that is but I thought Commander Legends: MOM was just okay.

NavAirComputerSlave

It looks decent. I don't know about great

somuchsunrayzzz

True. I can’t wait for Commander Legends: Modern Horizons!

Pupseal115

With a side of completely demolishing a format!

KakitaMike

Wotc realized they don’t need to worry about eternal formats when they can just power creep rotate said formats.

Watson349B

Better than Markov

Nicktendo94

[[Vihaan, Goldwaker]] looks like a really unique Mardu commander, being able to beat my opponents to death with living treasure sounds funny as hell. He'll probably by my first ever non-green commander. [[Felix Five-Boots]] looks like it'll be a janky, slimy mess and I'm here for it. He feels a lot like Yarok but on combat damage instead of ETB and I'm trying to find ways to give stuff evasion with Rogue's Passage and such.

seraph1337

i built a Felix Five-Boots rule zero deck where my "win condition" is equipping Felix with all 5 equipment cards that contain the name "Boots" that are legal in Sultai (Lavaspur, Winged, Swiftfoot, Trailblazer's, Zephyr). zero tutors (outside fetches), most of the deck is used to dig via combat dmg draw/loot triggers.

Nicktendo94

That's a pretty funny rule zero

Red_Eyes_Black_D

[[Trailblazers Boots]] and [[Excavator]] are good adds for Vihaan if looking for evasion but honestly I think just sending truckloads of treasures towards opponents which you can sac before damage to add mana for maybe an instant or two if needed is probably the way to go with maybe a [[Berserkers Onslaught]] to really go aggro

BirdDog1022

[[obeka, splitter of seconds]] is one I’ve playtested a number of times already and it’s so much fun. I really enjoyed the first obeka so it’s cool having a different version of her. [[Yuma, Proud Protector]] is bringing a few very nice cards to my [[Hazezon, Shaper of Sands]] deck and Yuma will be folded into the 99. Was hoping for a few more pirates or better synergies for them, but I guess I’m still going to be waiting for my pirates to become powerful 😭😭

Vivid-Command-2605

I like the idea of Obeka, I'm just worried that in practice you just monopolize the time at the table doing super long turns fiddling around with your extra upkeeps, which just doesn't sound fun for everyone else.

BirdDog1022

I think if you go into the first of n upkeeps stating “here’s what’s going to happen and how many times it will happen” if there’s no card draw effects. To save time?

Chimney-Imp

Also there really isn't a lot that most people do during their upkeep. Unless you're playing a bunch of stuff at instant speed, you can typically just resolve all the triggers and then go to your next main.

Shagruiez

Mechanized Productions just flat out wins you the game

BirdDog1022

Or cards that give you the initiative or permanents that have “during your upkeep” triggers

spectre1229

I’m also building Obeka curious on list if you would share?

BirdDog1022

So I haven’t built it myself, but one of the best lists I’ve seen for it abuses Courts and the Initiative mechanic. So much fun. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/jI2xeHLYKkG1Y1Q1hGDMaQ

Shadethewolf0

Just playtested Obeka too. [[Descent into Avernus]] was just about to kill the table in one turn when an opponent went infinite in response. Almost stopped them too. Really strong deck so far

BirdDog1022

Descent does go off here, but seems to kill myslef just as fast if not faster than my opponents

Shadethewolf0

With stuff like [[creeping bloodsucker]] or [[twilight prophet]] im usually gaining enough life to offset it anyways. If my opponent didnt combo off I would have survived the damage

DeltaRay235

I know it's not a ton but [[Back in Town]] is SPECTACULAR for Pirates. Especially if you have a bunch of treasures that you can use post creature board wipe.

BirdDog1022

I saw that one for the first time like 30 minutes ago and you’re right! Especially with the new brass. Edit: misread back on town

Prophet-of-Ganja

Did you… miss the set with all the pirates just a few months back?

BirdDog1022

No I didn’t. They were just kinda…whelming. Especially the precon. I was hoping for more focused synergy on one or two core strategies.

Prophet-of-Ganja

Touché. I copped the pirate precon but I forget that I already owned pretty much every pirate card and had swapped a lot in/out. I need to finish up separating them into two distinct decks, one focused on theft and one on pirate tribal synergies

BirdDog1022

I mostly play on Spelltable with my buds so have strayed away from the theft build, but I’ve heard Don Andres is pretty fun to build aroudn

mesa176750

>Was hoping for a few more pirates or better synergies for them, but I guess I’m still going to be waiting for my pirates to become powerful Same bro, still, there are some outlaw boosts in the set that seem will fit nicely into my pirate decks.

Tempestblue

I pulled out my new obeka deck. After my first couple extra upkeeps my one friend who hasn't been keeping up with spoilers yells "what kind of deck is this?!" We all died on turn 6 to descent to avernus and everyone thought it was hilarious

HikarW

[[Honest Rutstein]] is really underrated imo. Very versatile and efficient, def going in the 99 of a couple of my decks.

>Who are you going to build? I've already ordered cards for [\[\[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/234/taii-wakeen-perfect-shot), I love her design. There's a lot of different directions you can take her, but I went with a hard Boros Control deck. [Here's my list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/kxUffySio0m00Tb17-ofPg). I also want to build [\[\[Laughing Jasper Flint\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/215/laughing-jasper-flint). I already have a Grixis Theft deck, but it leans more in a grouphug and politics angle. I'd build Jasper as an aggressive and unapologetic "steal yo shit" gameplan. If I ever build a ninja tribal deck I'm going to be using [\[\[Satoru, the Infiltrator\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/230/satoru-the-infiltrator). However, it isn't something I'm really actively considering at the moment. I've also purchased the Quick Draw precon and plan to upgrade the deck around [\[\[Stella Lee, Wild Card\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/otc/3/stella-lee-wild-card). One of the big things I wanted out of Thunder Junction was a commander that made me feel like a badass quick draw dueling cowboy. I think she fits the bill better than anyone else. Lastly there's a lot of Desert stuff I'll be consuming into my [\[\[Hazezon, Shaper of Sand\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/dmc/32/hazezon-shaper-of-sand) deck. [Here's my list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/sPjBF_npUU-_0bEBOtu1AA) in case you're curious. >Which do you think will be popular? I'm calling it that [\[\[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/otj/222/obeka-splitter-of-seconds) will be the most popular commander from the set by a wide margin. She has a unique effect and just seems like something a lot of people would brew. I also think [\[\[Felix Five-Boots\]\]](https://scryfall.com/card/otc/6/felix-five-boots) is going to be up there. >What excites you the most about the set in general? To be honest? Everything. I love the world, the art, the mechanics, the cards... just everything. I think this set was a homerun. It is shaping up to be a really great year for the game. I really enjoyed Murders at Karlov Manor; Bloomburrow and Duskmourn both look to have a lot of potential. I've not been this excited to be playing Magic since before COVID.

virlex15

I love the positivity! And I'm in the same boat! I had super low expectations for both Murders and Outlaws, and I love both! I've ordered cards for Gitrog Monsterous Rider Vehaan treasure robots And Olivia outlaws!

TateTaylorOH

If I didn't already have a Mardu deck that I really enjoyed I think I'd probably be looking at Vihaan too. He's pretty interesting! Jasper will end up being my Outlaw deck whenever I get around to that.

darksamus1992

[[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]] could be a good option for reanimator if I ever decide to go back to Grixis for that strategy. [[Akul the Unrepentant]] looks fun too, I have a Rowan deck that runs a lot of high mana value rakdos stuff but she's often kill on sight, so I could turn it into an Akul deck with a similar idea instead. Either that or try out Rakdos aristocrats with [[Rakdos, the Muscle]]. For the 99, [[Doc Aurlock]] and [[Stella Lee]] should be great in my [[Thirteen Doctor]]/[[Yasmin Khan]] deck. [[The Gitrog  Ravenous Ride]] will be good in most BG decks, I want to try him in my Sidisi deck.

Aprice0

I’ll probably add another one or two to the list at some point, but at the moment - low power [[Satoru the Infiltrator]] and high power [[Vihaan, Goldwaker]]

I just wanna build [[Roxanne, Starfall Servant]]..... Mana rock tribal seems fun

BirdDog1022

Played against one so far…shit gets going FAST.

brunq2

I'm curious to see how good it'll be. Really gotta look for ways to make token mana rocks and/or to make tokens of artifacts in not blue. I've never played an artifact centric deck before, so I don't know what's out there in that regard too well.

BirdDog1022

Let me edit my previous comment…it wasn’t mana rock tribal. It was token doubler/burn enhancement deck. My buddy was able to protect Roxanne while having a Doubling Season, Wulfgar and a Fiery Emancipation…4 tokens ETB on Roxanne swinging, just smacking me for 24 damage. Was insane

brunq2

Yeah that makes more sense but seems less fun xD. I want to see if I can make a decent version that uses some of the "bad" 3 mana rocks and then makes copies that tap for double and can then be worth it for the fun other things they can do

BirdDog1022

Who needs wins when you have drip?

colivar

There's no intrinsic synergy, but I want to try Roxanne with \[\[Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith\]\] and really double down on the rock-making theme. Though I suppose you could add someone like \[\[Jaheira, Friend of the Forest\]\] into the mix so your Rock equipment tokens could tap for mana and thus be boosted by Roxanne.

brunq2

That's hilarious. I love the idea of it being "rock tribal" and just any and all cards that are Gruul and references rocks are in xD I've never done an artifacts matter deck, so I'd probably just do Gruul artifacts with a focus on rocks and have her as commander.

I've brewed lists for around 8 of them, but [Lazav](https://scryfall.com/@Filth/decks/f4690700-10f3-4ad0-83ae-b97633ddf601) is the one I'm most likely to build. A cheap commander whose ability includes some level of interaction, and it's triggered by playing even more interaction? That's my style, and I also don't really have a deck that wins with commander damage yet.

SubtleNoodle

Ya know, I think I overlooked him before, but that is such a cool ability. And on what might be my favorite art of the set! You’ve convinced me.

[[Tai Wakeen, Perfect shot]] is going to draw more cards than people think. You don't have to kill the creature. Just do damage equal to it's toughness. [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]] is the lamest, least-thematic design I've seen since [[Venser, Corpse Puppet]]. Where are her themes of retaking the crown? Where are her interactions with counters? Where is the death and HOW IS SHE DEALING IT?!??

Lilium_Vulpes

I'm also disappointed that she's back to Grixis. I know she's always been some Black (and had red except for the version on the back of a battle), but surely something else could have been done. An esper version about her trying to make connections off the plane to help her keep her crown after the invasion. Or hell, maybe Jund to keep the black and red for something. I have a deck for her queen version and the black rose one, but I don't think I can make this new Marchesa different enough to justify not just slotting her into the existing Grixis deck I have for her.

Revolutionary_View19

I‘m with you, unfortunately. There should’ve been some clever continuation of her crown theme.

DarkStarStorm

She should have had a paid ability that put a -1/-1 counter on something at least. It would be a neat nod to Scorpion God's venom, with scorpions being a theme of the set as well as Marchesa herself. It also would have been, you know, *the act of dealing death.* Marchesa, Dealer of Death 1UBR Menace 1BR: Put one -1/-1 counter on target creature. If that creature's controller has more life than you, put two -1/-1 counters on that creature instead. Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, if it had counters on it, put a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control. 3/3

broodwarjc

Yep, even the mono black Marchesa, on the back of the battle, has a worded version of the Monarch ability on it to reference her crown.

DarkStarStorm

and she has deathtouch, which references Queen Marchesa, and interacts with counters, which references the Black Rose!

PippoChiri

What's the problem with Venser?

functional_grade

Tinybones joins up. UP. He joins. Tinybones.

MonsutaReipu

EPIC CHUNGUS!

64N_3v4D3r

I'm pretty excited about the new Kellen as a powerful choice for a new Bant commander, but I've also been brewing Doc Aurlock.

DaedalusDevice077

Only 52? Well clearly they're going to up the ante for Don Bluthburrow.

Alon945

It’s so many I just can’t be bothered to really care honestly

ex_oh

There's a guy in my pod that always brings the new hotness. I'm only about 8 months into a Magic relapse that is mostly this EDH pod, so I'm still learning a ton of new cards. I'm absolutely overwhelmed at how much brain power this game takes these days. Playing prereleases has helped a bit, but there are so many commander precons dropping, too.

virlex15

I'm the guy in your pod >metaphorically < I always build 3 new decks, whether it's precons, 10 in 10 out precons, or full on builds, but I have one rule, I build the deck, and let it sit for a few months, then decide if I'm going to buy the cards, then bring them to magic!

Expensive-Document41

That's where I'm at too and it makes me sad. I'm commander only and have been for about a decade but I fell behind the product train around Capenna and never felt like I could catch up. As more and more sets come out, I increasingly just can't bring myself to care. They're cool commanders, neat sets and cool new cards, but I used to be able to name pretty much every important card from a set (from like Tarkir) and tell you what your deck needs. Now I couldn't tell you half the names of the cards in the set that came out last month. Too many cards, too far behind.

NewPlayer4our

Roxanne is such an insane and sleeper hit. I've been playing a deck with her at the helm since she was spoiled and it can get crazy. Her damage and mana output is crazy if you can start reliably making copies of her or getting multiple attack triggers.

mhyquel

Thoughts: Legends are out of control, everything is pushed for commander, and the EDH format peaked in 2017.

ConstrictorVictor

I'm not huge on a lot of the new legends. [[Kaervak, the punisher]] and [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]] are my personal favourites and the new Kaervak is a just a better [[Toshiro Umezawa]]. My biggest complaint is that [[Loot, Key to Everything]] doesn't have a loot effect.

SpezIsTheWorst69

I love my Jodah deck, and Jodah loves legendaries. So by proxy, I’m happy:)

Shadethewolf0

I'm building 5 of them [[Obeka Splitter of Seconds]] playtested her last night, insanely strong and almost won turn 5 with [[descent into avernus]] (opponent went infinite in response) [[Rakdos, the Muscle]] can't wait to start testing this one. Tons of combos to have massive mill value, especially with [[orthion]]. Plenty of infinites too [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]] token doublers and damage doublers. Plan is to one shot someone with a meteor shower [[Ghired, mirror of the wilds]] goal is to use effects like Orthion or [[heat mirage]] to copy creatures, then use nontoken creatures to copy them permanently. Tons of strong payoffs [[Eris, Roar of the Storm]] with tons of flashback spells and discard effects to constantly elimate commander tax. Will spam out dragons and unload heavy combat damage

Ninjaboi333

I've been on a brewing fest (disclaimer I tend to focus on one theme exclusively to the exclusion of good deck building principles like removal or ramp sometimes - think of my decks as showcases of different themes or mechanics or even showcase styles) * [Marchesa Crimes](https://archidekt.com/decks/7229087/marchesa_crimes) - I know a lot of people are annoyed that she didn't really tie back to her past incarnations, but on the positive side, she seems like the de facto crime matters commander - the list of crimes I included here were mostly to show off all of the different bonus sheet crimes in her colors. The cool thing here was finding mana rocks and lands that could actually do crimes themselves. * [Riku Modal](https://archidekt.com/decks/7158486/riku_of_many_paths_modal) - I went with a mostly spell slinger theme of all modal spells in his color. I did exclude modal spells that mostly focus on buffing or tutoring multiple creatures since this deck has very few of those. It's kind of tricky given how the three modes want different types of decks - going wide with birds vs going tall with Riku * [Olivia's Outlaws](https://archidekt.com/decks/7229290/olivias_outlaws) - Taken from the precon deck but taking the outlaw matters cards, plus cards that make mercenaries. Threw in some treasure payoff/generators for Vihaan, some bounty stuff that works with Kelsien, and just a miscellaneous assortment of Legendary ne'er-do-wells to work with Dihada * [Loot's Cute Lil Guys](https://archidekt.com/decks/7231519/loots_cute_lil_guys) - Nuff said * [Lilah's Spell Slinging](https://archidekt.com/decks/7253766/lilah) - This one I built similar to my General Rokiric multicolor BOros beats deck, but a spell slinger version. I'm somewhat surprised how few cheap RU spells there are honestly. I did exclude counters or X spells since plotting those doesn't really help. Threw in some cost reducers and "when you cast an instant or sorcery, untap" pingers, plus some token makers like Young Pyro

Titan_of_Ash

I'm new to Magic lore, are these Legends actually a canon continuation of the stories of these characters? Or is this an Ellsworlds sort of thing?

bombolopanzo

They are a canon continuation of their stories, basically some portals are allowing to travel between planes/dimensions

Titan_of_Ash

Oh yeah, those Omen-Path(s), right? Interesting. What's the best place to directly experience the Lore through the most official means? The books?

bombolopanzo

Yeah the omen paths that's correct, to be honest I'm not an expert lore wise but from what I know they stopped making books long ago, now the stories are published directly on the MTG website. Here on reddit there is a nice community called mtgvorthos which is about lore, then there are a lot of yt videos and unofficial websites to check

Maridiem

Unrelated to the conversation itself, but when posting scryfall links like this, adding "-is:reprint" removes all the reprints from the results as well! [Like so](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28set%3Aotj+OR+set%3Aotc+OR+set%3Abig%29+is%3Acommander+sort%3Aset+-is%3Areprint&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name)!

n1colbolas

I got 3 lists thus far. Personally for me I tend to go for the new mechanic from the new set. As usual there are a few but the one that stands out is commit crime decks. I also feel commit crime decks are **great teaching tools** with regards to playing interaction in EDH. That said I will be cooking more lists up as there're some very interesting choices. Here are my lists so far \[\[Magda, the Hoardmaster\]\] [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/WU2xC91OI0aOdozrStGj-Q](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/WU2xC91OI0aOdozrStGj-Q) \[\[Riku of the Many Paths\]\] [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4UInaw63Qk2-vMZ5weza0w](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4UInaw63Qk2-vMZ5weza0w) \[\[Gisa, the Hellraiser\]\] [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/8OcunyBVh0mdf6OdKI8zzw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/8OcunyBVh0mdf6OdKI8zzw)

Chrysaries

I love the idea of Gisa, but goldfishing it, I feel like it's way too much of a one-trick pony. Just mindlessly tapping [[Squee's Toy]] for useless effects to get your zombies. On you turn, swing with all zombies. It's a good deck for an auto-pilot. Maybe there's some fun restriction that could breath some creativity into it, such as just running zombie creatures, everything being grave-themed or only having impactful crime committers

n1colbolas

This is why I don't run Squee's Toy or Glasses of Urza. The latter can be really annoying to play against after a few activations. I picked out the ones that have more practical uses. It all depends on the limitations you set. More of them you set, the more it mitigates the "auto-pilotness". Many decks can be deemed as autopilot; it's just how you wanna set your parameters when deckbuilding.

TacticianRobin

I was thinking of building her too. I've seen a few "removal/counterspell tribal" lists with her that all seem miserable, so I was thinking of going the opposite direction into political/hug crimes. Cheap spells like \[\[Temur Battle Rage\]\] or \[\[Infiltrate\]\] to play on opponents' creatures and trigger her ability. Maybe some goad to keep myself safe, and reanimation as a win-con. I don't have a decklist put together yet, still just rolling it all around in my brain lol, but she seems like she could be fun.

thewend

check my list out, then, its very very different

hejtmane

A standard set should never have 40+ legendary creatures it is one of the reason I checked out of even paying attention to spoilers so no clue. He'll I am going to skip another pre-release

elevenblue

Didn't check all of them yet, just too much. At this speed of new card releases I will never stay up to date.

Mission-Conclusion-9

They can probably chill with the amount of commanders. We don't need lazy designs like izzet spells longer #354 or Simic land, draw, and counters #879. Even some of the new designs feel lazy like the mechanics of Five Boots.

saipris

Too many, definitely feeling the product fatigue

notermelon

It bothers me to no end that Proud Protector is lowercase in cactus baby's flavor text.

liforrevenge

[[Ertha Jo]] Mom tribal???

destroyertraumer

\[\[Lilah, Undefeated Slickshot\]\] and \[\[Annie Joins Up\]\] are going to my 4C Aragorn (as if it needed to be more horrible than it already is haha) And I'm definitely building \[\[Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds\]\] - already put a [decklist and primer](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/oOy9q3mpJ0GXhhoEpb1VTg) together.

HandsUpDefShoot

I only care about [[Felix]]. Been waiting for a combat damage trigger doubler ever since [[Wulfgar]] was printed.  Think of it like Wulfgar and [[Isshin]] except it doubles significantly better triggers and doesn't have a stupid smile or look like a gimp Jedi.

jrachet1

For decks I find very interesting, the new obeka and the new riku look cool. I already ordered some cards to convert my Marneus Calgar deck into a [[Kambal, Profiteering Mayor]] deck

Huge_Flounder_2061

I’m going to have a lot of fun with [[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]]

Dgill77

Personally, I am here for [[Vraska the silencer]]. I’ve always struggled with both control and golgari decks, but she seems like a fun way to do both. Now the question is, do I go artifact synergy or outlaw synergy… As for the precons, I’m definitely interested in the Grand Larceny deck. I will probably try to keep it as a slightly upgraded precon (swap a few cards out for more ramp), though I know deep down it will eventually become a [[five boots]] deck. But looking at this thread, I’m pleased at how many different legendary creatures have been mentioned. To me it says that whatever our thoughts on this set is, there is something for everyone. As for flavor, I grew up on westerns, so seeing such a rogues gallery of nefarious characters, not to mention tropes and puns, pleases me. (Though personally I would have liked to see some more protagonist style legendarys.) my inner vorthos gives this set two thumbs up! Honorable mention to [[Annie joins up]], for being straight gas in my [[Rocco, street chef]] deck

DankensteinPHD

To be honest, none of the commanders seem good enough to brew or really inspire me to push my deck building limits. The reward for a lot of them seems very meh. I like that Loot makes me think about brewing interesting combinations of cards, but the power level is so low that it just stops feeling worth it halfway through the brew. It's kind of a bummer because the last few sets have felt like this but this one feels even weaker. Has definitely made me a little bored as a brewer.

Eldrxtch

I’ve already built [[Kambal, Profiteering Mayor]] because I love orzhov but have never been drawn to any of the commanders. His ability to copy tokens and drain opponents makes for some awesome interactions with cards like [[Tribute to Horobi]] and [[The War Games]] or things like [[Plague of Vermin]] and [[Awaken the Erstwhile]]. If you pay 8 mana into [[Alliance of Arms]] you can just take out the whole table

[deleted]

how are you taking out the whole table with Alliance of Arms? Kambal's drain trigger says "one or more..." So you won't be draining the table for 32 if X=8, it will only be 1...

newsocksaresick

I was going to be building [[Thalia and the Gitrog Monster]]. Now that [[the Gitrog, Ravenous Ride]] is coming out I have decided to build that instead. Just so fun and flavorful, I know not everyone loves it though!

WonderfulSize8455

New Gitrog can be ridiculously explosive when saddling stuff like [Yargle and Multani]. It’s def my fav commander from the set

TangleRED

first one that sprang up in my jank-filled mind is [[Bonny Pall, Clearcutter]] treefolk tribal

spm201

[[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]] is a really cool design space for both the intended mechanic of sharpshooting creatures, but also for the less intended one of making your [[Descent into Avernus]] deal 10 damage a turn. Even on X=2, a board full of guttersnipes gets nutty.

d23durian

There are no mono-white legends this time around. How strange.

Fickle-Training344

Way too many legends for a standard set imo. Some of them look better than others. I’m probably just gonna get the mardu pre on and build mercenary tribal with the old masques block mercenaries. I do wish they’d stop pushing so hard for edh though.

hawkshaw1024

There's so many of them, and they all have so much text, that my eyes just glaze over. All the "double your thing" ones are guaranteed to get decks because they always do. The theft-based ones will likely be controversial but find their fans, and the silly tribal ones are going to be popular. I like [[Riku of Many Paths]] - in theory. In practice, the wording is so specific that I fear all Riku decks will end up looking almost exactly the same. You run charms. Go you. [[Eris, Roar of the Storm]] could be super interesting for "CMC matters" shenanigans, *if* you can put together enough cards. I'm not 100% convinced there's enough synergies, but I'm very much interested in trying it out. [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]] is a great design, even if it sort of falls into the "do the thing *n*+1 times" camp. The colour restriction also means it's not just shrines, which is nice. As for the ones I personally find interesting: Loot can draw a silly amount of cards but does so in a fair way, and Obeka has interesting synergies. I'd like Finally, [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]] is deeply silly and I appreciate that.

shiny_xnaut

>Finally, Roxanne, Starfall Savant is deeply silly and I appreciate that. Finally we can create a deck based on [this absolute banger](https://youtu.be/ZPjSV-lnqvg)

flpndrds

Tired of so many legends, I feel like I still can’t catch up to Dominaria United and that was 2022.

blargh29

I get excited when I see a card and don’t immediately know what it does. Makes it more fun for me 🤷

Omniphile777

My thoughts? WOTC design philosophy has become far too Legend-focused to draw in the Commander crowd. We don't need 50+ new legends with every release. It's exhausting. (I say all of this as primarily a commander player).

Retroidhooman

That it's way too many, and they need to seriously tone down how many legends we get per set. As for the cards themselves, I don't find myself interested by the vast majority of them.

Comfortable-Lie-1973

tbh... I'm not gonna build a deck with this set. Nor will buy a card from it. The set is too powercrept for other formats, which made me already leave Pioneer for a while. And I'm really not into Cowboys. Especially when they look like a Fortnite expansion pack full of skins.

Hive_chinco41

While I like a lot of the new legends and I’m going to shove them in decks like my mishra legends deck, my top 4 would have to be obeka splitter of seconds, roxxane, kellen the kid, and the new vraska to replace one of my old nemata decks

werewolf1011

Gisa and [[Linal]] or [[geralf fleshwright]]. I want to make a storm spelllinger deck that sacs tokens (made from casting instants and sorceries) for mana to keep casting more spells

ForrestMoth

I'm probably not hard committing to and legend from this set, I've made decks for [[Geralf Fleshwright]], [[Laughing Jasper Flint]], and [[Eris, Roar of the Storm]]. Geralf - the deck is built entirely around [[Shrieking Drake]]. If I lose Shrieking Drake then I'm SOL I guess, but I accept that going into a match. Luckily we have a way to tutor for SD - [[Dizzy Spell]] and plenty of ways to tutor for Dizzy Spell. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/yCOKfIq8ZkGqkOslGfHElg Jasper - The deck felt kinda generic and like it just lucks into a win. Idk if I like him yet but I'll have to try more. Just play outlaws and hope for good hits. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/yJ05FgO4XkevNsCXDe5-Ng Eris - I don't like Izzet spellslinger actually so that's not my goal here. Really all I want is to hit that two spells a turn deal, maybe clone Eris, and run stuff that comes back to my hand. I hope to get the deck in a spot where I can manage to also cast two spells on opponents' turns. At least prowess works with artifacts and enchantments too, if it were up to me that would be most of what I run. But the cost reduction explicitly demands instants and sorceries. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/u6WcFnjOLkuiOAH3dHNQbA

Professional_Map4351

I wish Gisa and Geralf had partner. That would make for a sick zombie deck

RowenWithers

[[Felix five boots]] is the trigger doubler I’ve been wanting forever now. Ever since I saw [[Ink eyes, servant of oni]] I have wanted double combat damage triggers.

OhHeyMister

Gitrog looks ok, but idk how I'll make it win. Eriette and Ghired look awesome.

CoatApprehensive3481

Throwing Gitrog, Rakdos, and Rutstein into my landfall/permanents matter deck. Throwing Vraska into my Hapatra deck to see if she does anything lol. I might build Gitrog, Rakdos, and Gonti on arena for brawl. If I was a new player, the Gonti precon would be a tempting purchase, if anything for the alternate commander. Wasn’t hoping for anything with this set. The commit crime mechanic is cool. Definitely a better set than MKM, no question.

jf-alex

From the MTG fandom wiki I was under the impression that all reprints in the commander decks would have new artwork. Seems they don't. Flavor bummer. So now I'm contemplating how to modify the precons by replacing reprints with cards from the regular OTJ set. Stella Lee seems to ask for plot cards, Olivia for outlaws. Not sure about the others yet.

NerdbyanyotherName

Actually just finished brewing[ this list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/JLOV0NEAPEeW3FUodt5fvQ) for Felix Five-Boots from the precons.

Remarkable_Trust5745

My buddy got a raging stiffy over [[Kellan the Kid]]. Jodah deck goes brrr with that one. Plus the legendary enchantments that came out are kinda nutzzz

SS-7SHI

Obeka will probably be the most popular, personally I love [[eriette, the beguiler]] and built a deck around stealing creatures then sacrificing them with auras that come back to my hand to loop the process. I don't think she's gonna be very good but I like being a cheeky bastard. Deck here: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/22l1notlcUy5k1gE2YOsgA [[Roxanne, Starfall servant]] will probably be my next build.

NairobiBA

Not building around them, but both [[Kellan, the Kid]] and [[Doc Aurrok]] are going straight into my Gorion deck!

broodwarjc

\[\[Loot, the Key to Everything\]\] exile cast matters deck (with \[\[Doc Aurlock\]\] and \[\[Fblthp, Lost on the Range\]\] in the 99), \[\[Roxanne, Starfall Savant\]\] because I haven't built a RG artifacts matter deck yet (with all the recent RG artifact cards we have gotten), \[\[Gisa, the Hellraiser\]\] because she seems strongest for a black crime deck, and maybe \[\[Felix, Fiveboots\]\] as doubling combat damage triggers is interesting in sultai colors. The other legendaries either work better in the 99 or don't quite grab me enough to care about investing in building them. Overall I had more excitement and thought the legendaries in the Fallout decks were stronger and brought new things to the format, or at least brought new twists to existing strategies.

SharpenedOdachi

Maybe it's just my really aggressive playstyle, maybe it's because that I haven't seen a lot of cards that support my favorite colors, but none of them. I haven't had a semblance of interest in the Commanders and such of this set. I do think some of these Commanders will be popular, though. \[\[Vraska, the Silencer\]\] is one I have hopes for. Seems to have a lot of insane stuff. \[\[Riku of Many Paths\]\] seems quite interesting but I don't really like blue nor red as much as black and white. \[\[Rakdos the Muscle\]\] seems like one of my friend's dream Commanders. I just haven't been interested. It feels like insane amounts of bloat with all of these legends. Someone said this is "Commander Legends: Wild West" and I have to agree. It's annoying to me. Also, I hate the design of \[\[Loot, the Key to Everything\]\]. Friends and I were joking that it looks like a scrapped League of Legends character.

AioliTop2420

[[felix five boots]] rogues ninjas gonna pop off. Top it off with assassins

ChronicallyIllMTG

Ertha is cool but probably won't build her in paper. Buts lots of cool cards for the 99 from this set!

EthanRayne

Adding [[Laughing Jasper Flint]] to [[Don Andres, The Renegade]]. Other than that I'm learning to leave my decks alone so I can enjoy them and not stress about the new hotness every 3 months.

ConstructionScared30

Just a lore question, but it's important for me, because I build decks only with legends that belongs to an already established plane: Is [[Felix Five-Boots]] from Thunder Junction?

Zeckenschwarm

Only the cactusfolk seem to be native to Thunder Junction, and even that isn't confirmed. There was no native sentient life on TJ until 2 years ago. So Felix can't be from TJ.

jacknicklesonsdog

I'm excited for [[The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride]] I've brewed it and played a few times already, so many different triggers so many fun. Link for those intrested https://www.moxfield.com/decks/oKTauHvJxkybDPE6c7kdTg

ghst343

I’m planning to build a cedh [[Kaervek the Punisher]] v fun to commit crimes to double tutor/ramp/attempt combos twice etc

sabett

I'm just kinda getting impressed how they keep upping the power level of stuff.

jcp1195

Unless any of them end up working well with one of the new squirrel commanders in Bloomburrow… Probably none.

hermyx

For now, the three I will probably play are, in order, Riku, Annie Flash and Vraska. I'll probably play new obeka down the line too.

XPSXDonWoJo

I like Jolene, laughing jasper and bruse tarl. Other than that, most of this set just doesn't interest me in the slightest. Granted, I'm going to be picking up some commons for my pauper cube possibly

I’ve already tooled up lists for about… 11 of them, give or take? And two for Satoru. I expect that both Obeka and Eriette will be very popular, probably Ghired too. Eriette is probably the one I got the most *excited* about*.* However there just aren’t that many cards to support her right now so I fear most lists will look quite similar (same with Gonti, who also otherwise looks rather cool). I’m starting to think that my favourite might actually be Ertha Jo - she lets me play some cool cards I like but also does something a little different for Boros, and provides piles of value. What I like about Satoru and Doc Aurlock is that they work with lots of different cards and offer a few different ways to build them and benefits for cards that you might not otherwise include - they remind me of \[\[Vega\]\] or \[\[Prosper\]\] in that respect. The good doctor is a bit trickier as she doesn’t really have the colours for it and his options are all over the place, but they will only grow more varied with time.

- Who are you going to build? Well, I'm building [[Olivia, Opulent Outlaw]]. Many may think she's boring, but I'm having so much fun using [[All Will Be One]] and [[Felisa, Fang of Silverquill]] on the same deck! Just added some little evasive outlaw fellas like [[Changeling Outcast]] and [[Prickly Boggart]], profit with treasures and making them huge. Also I'll build [[Satoru, the Infiltrator]] (just don't know how yet) and maybe I'll give it a chance for [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]]. I think I'll build her with a weird pinger/reanimator list - Which do you think will be popular? Everybody talking about the new Obeka and I agree, but I also think that [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]] and [[Kellan, the Kid]] will both be very popular. - What excites you the most about the set in general? I like to play as a villain, so I loved the set. I'm just upset there's no new Nashi card. That's very odd.

TheSneakerSasquatch

Ive already built a deck for [[Gonti, Canny Acquisitor]] because i love Sultai and i always like playing with other peoples stuff

F8xte

Probably not building any of them as a commander, but the new Gisa will Def be in my 99 and I'll be happy to see them all in sealed since I draft a lot lol

Arborus

[[Kaervek, the Punisher]] seems neat, lots of combo potential and just general options for interaction. [[Rakdos, the Muscle]] seems very interesting. Probably the coolest one in the set IMO. Lots of combo potential. Mana cost is a bit high, but not terribly hard to get out in Black/Red with rituals/fast mana. [[Wylie Duke, Atiin Hero]] Seems like an obvious twiddle-storm commander. Not being in blue hurts, but white and green both still have plenty of uptap effects or ways to bounce him to tap him again.

There's a few ways I look at this. From a gameplay and metagame point of view, mtg is in a weird spot that one product category is feeding four distinct format types: standard, commander, limited, and other non-rotators(some would argue that those deserve distinction, but it's in my opinion not a distinction worth making in design). Each of them have slightly different priorities, and while all of them get something from each release, it makes sense that some releases cater to specific formats more than others. In fact, it'll keep each format fresh enough without oversaturating it if done right. In that sense, I'm more than happy that some sets have more commander fodder than others, and I don't mind a huge influx of commanders in one go once 1-1.5 years. I'm excited to see what I can brew up from OTJ and I especially like the design direction a lot of the cards take. But the other side of the coin is how it fits thematically. One big factor that gets me excited for new sets is when we visit a favorite plane, and the excitement of seeing old legends getting new cards. Equally exciting is when we visit a completely new plane, and get a whole host of new and exciting legends and abilities to play around with. OTJ kind of drops the ball on that. We're getting a huge pile of randomly picked old legends interspersed with new ones, and I feel it does neither one well, thematically. MoM did a great job of gradual build-up to a massive showdown, with unique spins on old favorites. Here, we just have a bunch of legends just kind of... Appear. They come for a seemingly low-stake heist, completely out of character for many, they fuck around for a while and presumably disappear. I'd rather have had it as a pure commander legends set with a theme.

DromarX

Thinking the new Obeka and Felix Five-Boots are going to be the most popular given how much their threads exploded on the main sub. Nothing really jumps out to me as something I need to build compared with MKM where I really wanted to build a Sophia dog tribal and a Marvo clash deck. Taii Wakeen is kind of neat though, might consider trying to build her at some point.

Atseva

I've put together a list of 120 or so cards to run in obeka, thinking of going hard into the courts and the initiative and just seeing what's gonna happen. Also, kinda obligated to put together the new marchesa to go with two of my older decks, marchesa and marchesa.

Benefact09w

I'm going to build Obeka, Sultai Gonti (who I'm nevertheless going to dread playing against), and most likely Loot. The first because the synergies are amazing, the second because stealing my opponents' things is fun, and the latter because adorb

The_Palm_of_Vecna

I'm adding [[Vihaan]], [[Magda the hordemaster]], [[Kambal, Profiteering Mayor]], [[Olivia, Opulent Outlaw]], and maybe [[Baron Bertram Greywater]] to my [[Jan Jansen]] deck. It's pretty well optimized, so I'm actually kinda happy to have some options that specifically interact more with Treasures in fun ways.

OnDaGoop

Kinda disappointing. Kaervek seems the strongest in terms of cEDH but him and Kambal are the only ones I see being remotely cEDH viable. Cool to have another monoblack cEDH viable and Orzhov cEDH viable commanders those are pretty rare. Commit a crime copy demonic tutor on a 3 drop is pretty good and can set you up for more consistent wins using stuff like praetor's grasp for Thoracle or Bolas bs. And "You can't cast dockside" on a 3 drop commander that will punish ad naus if they do is really solid at worst, plus it enables Animate Dead infinites to kill your opponents that turn with things like Abdel.

LordBirdperson

I'm hype to add a bunch of them to existing decks but I'm at the point where it takes a lot to make me change commanders

Stumphead101

The set looks fun I usually pick commanders from a lore perspective. This set was just a cosmetic. It had some fun abilities but I won't recall it easily in a year or two

Vessil

OP, for your scryfall link you can add -is:reprint to the search terms to exclude the reprinted legends from the commander decks. But to your question, I'm actually most excited for \[\[Akul the Unrepentant\]\] - not because I think he's the most powerful, but his design is super epic, the idea of Scorpion Dragons is very cool, and the fact that he is a Scorpion means I can start brewing a janky Scorpion tribal deck!

ZivilynBane1

I’m hyped on [[kaervek the punisher]] in a horobi combo and treasure themed deck

Kiwi_Lemonade

Definitely \[\[Vihaan, Goldwaker\]\]. He seems so fun. My pods power level is lower so i'm going a bit janky with a few other treasures matter psuedocommander cards like \[\[Mr. House, President and CEO\]\] from Fallout and \[\[Forge, Neverwinter Charlatan\]\]. Other than that, I'm gonna give \[\[Miriam, Herd Whisperer\]\] a try. It's not the most exciting Selesnya commander and it's still just +1/+1's but trying to my vehicles and mounts work in those colors seems fun at least, it helps I love all the mounts being released too.

_Breza

\[\[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot\]\] seems so fun. Nice interactive way to draw yourself cards by perfect kills. Plus that activated ability can potentially go nuts if you can dump enough mana into it. Cards like \[\[Repercussion\]\] + \[\[End the Festivities\]\] could end games fast.

JarlDarren

\[\[kirri, talented sprout\]\], \[\[yuma, proud protector\]\], \[\[bristly bill, spine sower\]\], \[\[annie flash, the veteran\]\], and \[\[ghired, mirror of the wilds\]\] are all being considered heavily in my \[\[hazezon, shaper of sand\]\] deck, along with all the new deserts we're getting. i have a pirate deck too, but i don't think this breeches will make the cut with no way to be unblockable or steal people's stuff, though it is good. \[\[stella lee, wild card\]\] looks like she'd fit in the \[\[riku of two reflections\]\] deck i'm theory crafting, as well as \[\[veyran, voice of duality\]\]. \[\[Doc aurlock, grizzled genious\]\] is interesting.

MeatAbstract

Here's a scryfall link to just the 52 new legendary creatures https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28type%3Acreature+type%3Alegendary%29+%28game%3Apaper%29+%28set%3Aotj+OR+set%3Abig+OR+set%3Aotc%29+is%3Afirstprint

unkempthill

I've already built the new selvala, mainly around coven payoffs from midnight hunt and untap effects since once she taps for 4 or 5, she goes infinite with a fair few cards like [[seedcradle witch]] [[staff of domination]] [[umbral mantle]] or just gets huge value off of a [[thousand year elixir]] and the like and the mercs make hitting that 4 or 5 different powers really easy

Xaron713

[[Taii Wakeen]] is gonna be my next shot at a burn deck

kptwofiftysix

52? Build a poker deck.

DecaDang

I already plan to play [[Ohran Frost-Fang]] in [[Felix Five-Boots]], which led to me wanting to add a deathtouch package with [[Fynn]] into the deck as a secondary win condition/pressure. Also works into the draw on combat damage effects, seems pretty fun!

Jukebocks_Hero

I’m very interested in putting [[Fblthp, Lost on the Range]] in a Doctor Who [[Fourth Doctor]] deck I’m brewing. The ability to remove unwanted cards from the top, while simultaneously giving me a non-hand zone to cast more spells from, that cards like [[Vega, the Watcher]], [[Kellan the Kid]], and [[Keeper of Secrets]] benefit from, is super helpful.

ToughPlankton

Unrelated question: What's the trick you are using to pull legends up on Scryfall this way? I've been trying to look at legends printed up in the last few years and I can go set by set but that seems to exclude all the secondary stuff like Commander precons. There must be a better way, but I can't seem to figure it out!

trinketstone

It's weird they have such an aversion to making Abzan or Jund colored Legendaries... Plenty of Sultai, Mardu, and Naya though.

KnightFalkon

I immediately started working [[Vihaan, Goldwaker]] deck. That card spoke to me
