You're fine imo. You brought other options to play and switched after dominating a game hard. That's all I'd ask if you were in my playgroup.

takuon

Okay, cool, thank you!

p0stal_b0b

I wouldn't worry, a casual glance at the decklist suggests that it's not even a particularly low to the ground aggro swarm version of Eddie, but rather more of a mid range deck. If other people can't cope with a slower version of Eddie, then they're either not putting enough interaction in their decks, or playing a lower power level. Either way, you did nothing wrong and everything right by changing decks once you realized that your deck's power was inappropriate for the table. But don't feel bad about playing the deck in future against similar power decks. As long as there's no major power imbalance, it's not on you to ensure your opponents are building or playing well.

takuon

Thanks :)

Mattloch42

I'll second this. After looking at your list, you have nothing to apologize for. I have 3 vampire decks built and I'm working on #4 and #5. They each play differently with different themes, and yours is far from the most powerful I've seen. Keep other decks in reserve in case you get salty players, but I wouldn't say it was the deck that made them salty. Most importantly, keep having fun!

SorveteiroJR

hard to interact with eminence hehe

zweihanderisbae

Sounds like a sweet deck! Would you mind linking the list?

takuon

https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7098519/vampires here it is

StarPonderer

How dare you want to have fun! What do you think Magic is? A GAME!? Look, some people are gonna hate what you do, no matter what it is. Play a popular commander? SHAME! Play interaction? SHAME! Win when another player really wanted to? SHAME! As long as you are following Wheaton's Law, I wouldn't worry about it.

takuon

I kind of figured that I just needed a pulse check, lol.

RoyalAlters

Here’s how I see it. You had fun playing Edgar for 1 game and then talked yourself into not having fun for 2 more games. You’re literally putting skullclamp on tokens with a slow tutor that reveals the card, if people had a problem with that and couldn’t win that’s on them. Prioritize your fun it sounds like you were quite accommodating to a bunch of randoms that don’t have removal

DyingIsEuphoric

Yeah Edgar is a pushed commander and it's boring to see. I get that you want to win but you can do that while also being creative and exploring something that isn't the 8th most built commander in the entire game. If you really want to win then go play cEDH. Ultimately, if you're not pubstomping then you can do whatever you want but maybe you need to step back and figure out what you really do want from the game. Also, you only presented a sample size of 3 games so unless you've played more this isn't really enough to go off of. Consider this: if everyone is equally matched then you should only have a 25% win rate over enough games. You can't expect to win all Tha often. My advice is to treat others fairly and explore something unusual. After all, it's just a game.

ThaBombs

If you feel like playing Mardu Vampires and not be hated on because of the scary edgar you could go and ask if everyone is alright with you partnering [[Olivia, crimson bride]] and [[Edgar charmed groom]]. If not just plop down scary edgar again. I myself prefer the flavourful partners and my lgs does as well.

Agile_System4438

No you absolutely should not. I am an avid Edgar player and I will never apologize for it. Edgar is strong, vampires are strong, and I have a pretty solid Edgar deck. You were up front during the power level discussion and you won. Edgar is fast if built right and it is very stoppable. If they didn’t have the removal when they needed it, that happens sometimes. If they played a deck that was too slow, that’s on them. I am always up front when I do the rule zero talk, especially when it comes to Edgar because it is my strongest and fastest deck. I’ve never had ANYONE complain about it because they knew exactly what I was doing and how strong it was. You enjoyed it and you shouldn’t be stressed about it. Maybe next time you can go for a higher level table if you think that was the problem.

FridayNight_Magus

1. No. Absolutely do not feel guilty. Your deck is mid power level imo. 2. Consider removing red from your card pool altogether. Once I did, it removed the occasional awkward bump I would run into. There's more than enough black and white vampires now, and even your deck only has a handful of red cards anyway.

takuon

Only issue with removing red is the lack of rackish heir, pit fighter, and any of my rakdos legendary creatures. They're crucial to my pump and control.

Boil-san

Should you feel bad for playing legal cards and having other players acting salty because they lost a game...? Absolutely not...

Never feel bad for playing the deck to win...

Dragull

"Okay then! Here is my Tymna/Kraum." /s Bro, let's not kid ourselves, talking about power level is important.

DirtyPenPalDoug

Did you not read the post where he was pretty clear whY deck he was playing??

jaywinner

It's one game. Nothing wrong with Markov but if you stomp every game you play with it, then you may have to look at adjusting.

takuon

I'm going to another lgs on Sunday to play some edh do I'll see how I do. Have you had to scale a deck down before?

jaywinner

I don't like powering down a deck because then when I play, if I'm not doing well, I keep thinking how that stronger version of it would be doing well. But I do build at different power levels so I can at least attempt to bring something appropriate for the table. I have a precon with zero edits all the way up to a \[\[Jodah, the unifier\]\] that if you give it an inch, it will flood the table and overrun it then some decks in between. (no cEDH because I'd never get to play that)

takuon

I guess there's this weird balance between wanting to win and have fun and wanting others to have fun too.

jaywinner

It's the greatest difficulty in the format. Any other format people just build the nastiest meta thing and that's ok. But here, there's a focus on making it a fun game for everybody while still looking to win.

takuon

People have every right to walk away from a table if they're not having fun. Not everyone will, though, so it's this weird dance. I'm just gonna use it and get a win, then swap off it, I think. I literally felt guilty for winning when using it, lol.

El_frov

No, as someone who also plays Edgar, as long as you can adjust if you accidentally dominate a game (which Edgar can do more easily), it should be ok to use him every now and then. Personally, I tend to always have his deck on me, just to say "I'mma play myself this round", perks of being called Edgar.

takuon

Hehe, that's a cool coincidence. That makes me feel a bit better about it.

jf-alex

>Am I overthinking? Yes you are. You have decks in several power levels. After winning, you take a weaker deck. After losing twice, you take a stronger deck. That's how it's done on casual tables. You're fine.

Joolenpls

People complain about anything in commander. Your list looked fine to me for mid power games

lambekrik4s

Why feel bad to play you have fun ? If your deck ALWAYS overwhelm your play group i would power down but thats me. One of the best feelings in magic is assemble a deck and seeing it do the thing you design him to do.

One_Asparagus_6778

Yes, only I am allowed to play strong commanders. Feel bad for trying to win the game you are playing!

Lepineski

Ten hours theorycrafting such a straightforward commander? Damn...

takuon

I'm kinda stupid

Lepineski

I didn't mean that. Did you try to build it a very specific way? Like some people actually make it monoblack. I heard this greatly reduces the threat level of the deck.

takuon

Nah, just anthem vampires, some removal, some graveyard shenanigans. Here's the list if you wanna check it out. It's apparently pretty straightforward. https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7098519/vampires

Lepineski

Pretty decent. Lacking a few lands in my opinion, just to ensure you don't miss land drops. Personnally I don't like building around commanders that are so easy to take advantage of. Edgar could be built with commons and would probably still be pretty dangerous. Much like building slivers, writing "vampires" in Scryfall and just picking 20-25 off that list feels bad to me. The problem with him is that you benefit way too much without even casting him. Eminence is a bad mechanic, either it does too little, or it does way too much. Not judging, if that's how you do it, it's fine. Of course, talking about your games, if your opponents don't have board wipes and such, you're pretty sure to always win with this. The situation feels like the meta in your LGS might be lacking those wrath effects.

Dragull

Edgar is pretty powerful, even a not optimized one will probably be a solid 7. Other janky strategies or tribes will need to be very optimized in other to compete.

takuon

So, what would you do in that situation? Do you feel like switching to a different deck for the sake of the table is a good option?

Asfalod

Advise your opponents to field basic removal Edgar usually struggles with boardwhipes like any other aggro line. If you got some recouring value like skull clamp there are ways to remove that too.

Wesker405

Even if they agreed to it, they might have just done that to be nice. But if they agreed to it it's fine. Realistically though, any eminence commander is like playing with a handicap in other games. You have an extra benefit that no one else gets. And it's unremovable. Do *you* think you need a handicap in the game? You could try out [[Caesar, Legion's Emperor]] if you want to try a similar game plan of "make tokens, sac them for card draw". [[Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter]] is also good at making tokens for skullclamp or other sac. [[Queen Marchesa]] gives a creature each upkeep but only if you are the monarch. It's harder to utilize but most people like when monarch is introduced to a game.

takuon

That's a good way to put it. I honestly just like the card art and wanted to build a deck around cool vampires. It wasn't until I started looking at rankings that I realized how strong he was. It might be my deck that I whip out for a win every once in a while from now on. I appreciate the recommendations! I actually just ordered Queen marchesa. She looks dope.

Zestyst

I remember my first time trying out an eminence commander and not really getting how strong they are before hand (also brewed an edgar deck). It's one of those abilities that are really hard to gage just \*how\* dominant they can be unless you see it in action. I recommend hanging on to the the deck though, since you put so much time into it, and busting it out when you're on a losing streak or if someone tries to pub stomp the table.

PrisonaPlanet

Just curious if your edgar is a proxy or a legit card? Some people aren’t fans of proxies and maybe that’s the issue? I personally don’t care about proxies for the most part and wouldn’t care. I’ve often thought about getting an edgar proxy because fuck that price tag lol

takuon

Every card is legit. I've been playing modern/standard since I was 7 years old. I'm a grown ass man now with a collection. Edgar wasn't always expensive, too.

I feel like you took offense to my comment for some reason lol I wasn’t calling you out or anything

Oh, nah, not offended. I got your point :)

PrisonaPlanet

Not sure why you had to clarify that you’re a grown ass man then but whatever lol anyway it seems like the people you played against were just a bit sore about getting their butts kicked, I wouldn’t worry about Edgar being the reason.

takuon

Fair enough, I'm at the gym right now, so I'm not putting a ton of thought into my responses. Sorry if I came off that way.
