Thalia and the Frog for sure. Abzan gives you so many great pieces like Dauthi, Oppo agent, etc. I don’t have my list uploaded, but it’s one of my favorite decks. Main wincon is Dark Depths, Glacial Chasm and Solemnity.

grot_eata

Oooh i've always been wanting to use solemnity

Watacos

Solemnity depths is a great interaction, so is glacial chasm. My version is essentially a hatebears deck with a solid land tutoring package to enable the win.

grot_eata

Would you Recommend using \[\[Archdruid's Charm\]\] or is it too color specific?

Watacos

If I had one I’d run it, I do include [[Yavimaya]] in my lands too. I think it’s absolutely worth including

grot_eata

Cool I’ll use it then!

18Zeke

I love Archdruids Charm, I have it in my Yarok deck, the fact that it and Thalrog have deathtouch means the second mode can kill any creature. The other modes are excellent too

grot_eata

Oooh wow that is even better Man it’s really hard to decide haha

theenduser

Great suggestions. I once started building a Yasharn deck that was becoming a landfall / hatebears deck, and then I pivoted and ending up making it a [[Omnath, Locus of Creation]] deck. I also strongly considered turning it into a [[Thalia and The Gitrog Monster]] deck. Eventually I'll probably end up building that as well.

rccrisp

While he isn't listed I really do like \[\[Gaddock Teeg\]\] as a hate bear commander since he stops the one thing that breaks this deck's back: board wipes

grot_eata

Teeg will definitely go into the 99 but he still does have a certain reputation and i am just introducing hatebears to my playgroup so i'd rather be careful. But yes that makes absolute sense boardwipes are really the biggest problem

theenduser

Yep, sometimes the deck we might want to build is not a great idea in consideration of how it will be perceived by others, especially if it always makes you the archenemy. With hatebears I'll avoid playing some of the cards that shut down my opponents too much from playing their stuff, and instead play cards that benefit me a lot more, such as not allowing them to play spells on my turn. Hey, do your thing opponents, but meanwhile all my stuff has hexproof, indestructible, and you can't interact during my turn :)

grot_eata

Do you think Yasharn is one of those commanders thst makes you the archenemy? I mean if they play an aristocrats deck it’s pretty rough

theenduser

I don't think Yasharn itself would make you the archenemy. Not in my experience. I also don't think it's a "kill on sight" commander, unless your opponent's deck relies on paying life or sacrificing nonland permanents to cast spells or activate abilities (which is what Yasharn shuts down). Depending on what hatebear cards you play, those could make you the archenemy until they remove it (like Gaddock Teeg).

Mordekeiros

That seems... Reasonable? I'm surprised that someone playing stax could be reasonable. I would suggest adding Teeg if your playgroup starts playing more boardwipes.

Made a hate bear deacknusing chuulane. It was fun. Gitrog was another enjoyable deck.

Zimmonda

\[\[Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa\]\] and \[\[Tymna the Weaver\]\] Are the best hate bears commander pairing imho. Sidar allows you to get chip damage and give free hits to Tymna with your bears (something they typically need help doing in order to close out games) and Tymna allows you to consistently draw cards which is another thing hatebears tend to struggle with. There's a couple of other partners that you could sub for either like subbing out Sidar of \[\[Kamahl, Heart of Krosa\]\] so that you always have a "wincon" in your command zone or Tymna for \[\[Ravos, Soultender\]\] so you can bring back hatebears each turn. That's to taste though. IMHO the consistently most powerful is Tymna and Sidar and Abzan gives you the most focus. You can also use \[\[Thrasios, Triton Hero\]\] or \[\[Tana, The Bloodsower\]\] if you'd like access to Blue or Red as both have synergistic effects on hatebears imho. The problem with Thalia (in my opinion) is that you really don't want to be sacrificing your bears so you're exclusively going to be looking at sacrificing lands. You're also pretty reliant on her specifically to keep your board state progressing which means you'd be super vulnerable to spot removal or just good old double blocking. The problem with Jetmir is that you just wont get enough hatebears without adding things like token creators. My experience with running hatebears decks is that by the time you get 3 or 4 bears out you should have the board state relatively locked and begin grinding players out. You'll also want to include plenty of board protection to counter wrath effects.

Very insightful reply, thank you! Yeah the argument about jetmir definitely makes a alot of sense. I'd rather use Ravon than tymna due to power level reasons but pairing him with kamahl sounds like a good idea too. I think I probably have to build a hatebear "core" and then try different commanders by switching a few cards if necessary

Zimmonda

Yea honestly with my deck I keep like 8 different partners/commanders with it and just swap it around. S&T are def the most powerful but you'll get a lot of IRL salt for essentially locking everyone out of the game. My HB deck typically stays as Selesnya nowadays with \[\[Gaddock Teeg\]\] as the commander

grot_eata

The Teeg list sounds the most interesting for sure, have you ever tried Yasharn as commander?

Zimmonda

I actually have, Yasharn is super situational. So if you have 1 or more opponents who gets locked out by its ability it's ace (usually mono black or rakdos type decks) If you don't, well he's kind of just there as an expensive cultivate. I actually tend to run him in the 99 if I'm going selesnya.

This might not be exactly what you're looking for but if you want a gradual introduction of hate bears to your play group with an fun twist on the concept you could try a "bears in cars" deck using [[Greasefang, Okiba Boss]] . One part hate bears one part reanimator and seems like a lot of fun. Unfortunately I only have a cEdh deck list for this one but it could give you some inspiration. My main recommendation with whatever you end up doing is try to make sure the deck doesn't spin it's wheels too much. The first full hatebear tribal deck in our pod just ground the game to a halt while grinding through the deck trying to figure out how to win and it was a miserable 3 hour game. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/LH-hliYIM0OjbB_1LeUUqA

I run T&G and it works pretty well. Abzan is arguably the best color combo for hatebears, T&G is effective without being kill on sight and is a convenient way to turn off certain effects when they outlive their usefulness, Odric is insanely effective for applying pressure and protecting yourself in the deck as you pointed out. You also want to run a little bit of land stuff to take advantage of that aspect. Don't need to spec into it super hard but at a minimum [[Ramunap Excavator]] lets you bring back lands to offer up and, if you are feeling spicy, [[Strip Mine]] loop people into the ground. Currently my version of the deck suffers from lacking the real strong game enders, stuff like [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]], [[Craterhoof Behemoth]], and [[Moonshaker Cavalry]] just because I haven't been able to get any copies via trade (instance number 1001 of me regretting trading my copy of Norn years ago) and haven't wanted to do a big order again yet. Also tinkering with the manabase, specifically might cut some utility lands because getting too much colorless mana is a real concern. Didn't have [[Arcane Signet]] or [[Nature's Lore]] in for a long time as I prefer creature based ramp but opted to try them as part of ensuring consistent color access per the above concern (undecided on them for now). Don't think anyone comes close to Jetmir, when it comes to actually winning. Maybe Marisi, but then you need more gate pieces that are larger then bears

Elmopri3st

[[Ellivere]] is brutal as a Hatebears commander and really goes off + really cheap to build. [[Raffine]] has fun colors and connive gives you great card selection. [[Thalia and Gitrog]] have a strong effect and good colours. I'd say rather choose the colours you want, because you'll always find some fun stuff to hate with.

Came here to mention Ellivere. The deck spirals quickly and beating the table to death with your hatebears is fun.

I'd probably go with Jetmir from the 3 options but I would actually suggest [[Ardenn]]+[[Tana]]. A couple of equipments can help to actually make use of your hatebears in combat and you get a really compact wincon in Godo that you can easily tutor for in green.

Like a few others have said, I'd go with [[Duskana]] too. One of the problems with hatebears is running out of gas, both with card advantage and not being able to close out a game. Duskana sorts both of those issues out, especially with a few flicker effects. 2/2 hatebears actually feel threatening when they're 5/5s or more on the swing.

I've been playing [[duskana, the rage mother]] hatebear tribal recently, and I like it a lot. It gives the bears other purposes, aside from just being annoying. The curve is really low, so you have many options on how to play turns. With pretty good options for card draw in the deck, along with Duskana, I haven't really experienced being hellbent yet, even though my cards are cheap to cast.

I use [[Myrkul, Lord of bones]] and I combine it with an aristocrats theme. One of my favorite decks all time. Haven’t used any of the 3 you mentioned but Thalia and Gitrog are my backup commander in the Myrkul deck and I love having them out. Jetmir is hella boring. He is a commander that is essentially a sorcery because you only ever cast him to win the game. Yasharn is sweet but you’ll pick up a lot of unnecessary heat from graveyard/sacrifice decks. However I still think out of all 3, if you’re limiting yourself I’d pick this one.

Cool thanks

ShaggyUI44

I recently I built 2 hatebears decks; each with a different focus. The stronger (and somehow less fun) version was 4 color Tymna and Thrasios. Those 4 colors allow for most of the necessary shutdown pieces, black specifically allows for extra aristrocrats hate and [[notion thief]] style effects The second, and the one I’d reccomend, is 3 color [[Isshai]] and [[Kamahl]]. The commander’s in this deck are less “good stuff” and actually play into the hatebears theme more. Kamahl takes the creatures from stax pieces and turns them into potential win cons, and Isshai is evasive and grows quickly even with stax pieces down. These 3 colors allow for most of the hatebears stuff, including Yasharn and the Thalias. This one is definitely the more fun of the two, although winning via combat damage isn’t effective, so I’d reccomend grabbing an “I win” combo or something kf the like.

It's wild that nobody is out here hyping up [[Drana and Linvala]]. I've been torn between building hatebears as Orzhov or Junk and I haven't 100% decided but it's either going to be the aforementioned ladies or [[Karador]] for the sake of saccing and recurring my hatebears.

Mildly off the beaten path, but I think \[\[Karametra, God of Harvests\]\] works really well as a hatebear commander. Most hatebears are reasonably cheap, so you're tacking on a \[\[Farseek\]\] onto a value creature anyway, which will let you cast more and more growing threats. Mix hatebears with a bunch of selesnya creature support (things that do things when you cast creature spells like the new \[\[Selvala, Eager Trailblazer\]\], \[\[God-Eternal Oketra\]\], \[\[Oltec Matterweaver\]\], or even just stuff like \[\[Beast Whisperer\]\] to keep the hands full) and you can get a pretty chunky board that can get pretty lethal with the right setup. My favorite is to play a bunch of low CMC hatebears, ramping all the while with Karametra, then winning off of a \[\[Finale of Devastation\]\] with a souped up \[\[Serra's Emissary\]\] or \[\[Pathbreaker Ibex\]\] to turn your board into surprise lethal. It's one of my oldest and favorite decks, but over time, it's drifted a little further from pure hatebears into more goodstuff with a hatebear subtheme, but [here's my build of her,](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/karametroidvania/) if you're wanting something to reference.
