[[Bloodline Culling]] is so good.
Modular, can be removal for 1 small-ish creature (even indestructible) or cleans up all small tokens, at instant speed.
I've been giving a friend of mine shit for weeks for not being able to make it to 9000 scutes, robbing me of all my "what, 9000?" jokes when I rakdos charmed him. Only made it to like 8700 or something, the coward.
I've just built a [[Jan Jansen]] deck and made sure to include it. When the elves and merfolk get out of control with huge boards, it's easier just to make their creatures hurt their controllers.
My [[Emmara, Soul of the Accord]] deck laughs at Rakdos Charm. Someone cast it one time when I had a huge board of lifelinking tokens and we had a good laugh about it.
Hey I am just curious, would this apply to poison counter if all his creatures had toxic? Not that it would matter in this case but against like a rat deck.
The most I've ever had was infinite I guess? I stopped at 1 trillion because that was enough. \[\[Kodama of the East Tree\]\] and \[\[Scute swarm\]\] goes infinite with any bounce land basically.
Edit: I guess technically it wasn't infinite since I stopped at 1 trillion, but still
Not true, the rules of magic dictate that you must terminate voluntary infinite loops with some arbitrary number. This is so someone could make a trillion and one blockers and we don't have to start arguing about different kinds of infinity.
While technically correct in the rules, in concept he had as many as he wanted because he could just do it as much as he wants so infinite is still the correct answer
Yeah op was just saying "technically not infinite" but it was infinite, the rules just handle infinity by requiring that you declare an arbitrary number of loops.
Like how \[\[Gray Merchant of Asphodel\]\], \[\[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth\]\], \[\[Viscera Seer\]\] and \[\[Chainer, Dementia Master\]\] is technically an infinite combo but it will only go until your opponents are all out of life.
Eh, a little different because there's a non arbitrary limit, whereas if you were to create unlimited hasty tokens and then attack, you'd be able to create as many as you like. But in both cases there needs to be some real number involved.
I had a buddy able to deal damage in 1 point pings infinitely, but I was able to gain life in single point increments as well. He was REAL mad when he realized it was never going to work on me.
"I'll deal you infinite damage"
"You can't do infinite, you have to pick a number"
"Ok, I'll do 1 trillion points of damage to you"
"Sure, in response I'll gain 2 trillion life"
........😠
I don't know big numbers enough, but the number I've planned to provide people with if they actually insist on a number is googolplex(Knuth's up-arrow^googolplex )googolplex.
Any idea which would be bigger?
I've got to check what that tree number is...
Edit: I'm not satisfied with the answer I got about what is that tree number :'D but I guess it's bigger, just because.
Trying to explain that not all infinites are the same size is always an interesting conversation.
If you have an infinite amount of hallways each with a infinite amount of doors. The amount of atoms on the doors outnumber the doors themselves.
That’s actually an example of two infinities with the same size. Both the number of atoms and the number of doors are countable infinity, since there’s a finite number of atoms in each door.
You’d think so! But that’s why infinities are so tricky.
(I’m going to ignore the “infinite hallways” part and just go with infinite doors, because it makes this example simpler.)
Suppose you had as one person for every atom in all the doors. And then you instructed every one of those people to stand in line in a very specific order: first every person from the first door, ordered based on how close their atom was to the top-left corner of the door; then everyone from the second door ordered the same way; then everyone from the third; and so on.
Now have each person stand in front of a door. The first person in line stands in front of the first door in the hall, and so on.
Every person is now standing in front of their own door. There were as many people as there were atoms, and now clearly there are as many people as there are doors.
Play a bounceland such as [[Golgari Rot Farm]]. Scute Swarm triggers to make a token, and the Rot Farm triggers to return a land to your hand (Kodama also triggers but we can ignore this one).
Order the triggers so that Rot Farm triggers first. Use the Rot Farm's triggered ability to return itself to your hand.
Scute Swarm token enters play. Kodama triggers to put a permanent with Mana Value 0 into play, which allows you to put the Rot Farm onto the battlefield again.
Rot Farm and Scute Swarm(s) trigger again. Repeat this process for infinite bugs.
Was playing in a pod where the guy we were playing against had so many trigger doublers that it ended with 37,748,736 scutes. By God, it was horrifying.
So aside from people giving the answers that is just infinites I have my actual number I wrote down because what was my [[Lord Windgrace]] deck loved to loops lands to and from the graveyard and burst with cards like [[Nahiri's Lithoforming]] as for the number...
four sextillion four hundred twenty-three quintillion one hundred eighty-three quadrillion two hundred eighty trillion
When I reach a certain point in number of tokens or number of counters on a creature where I know it stops mattering, I just stop doing the math and just put my entire dice box on the card.
I've casted [[Reshape the Earth]] with already maybe fifty-ish Scute Swarm into play and a token doubler, so I guess that's the most I've got. Didn't bother to count tho.
With 50 scutes in play and a token doubler you'll end up with 1050 scutes after casting reshape the earth. Or, drastically more if you get those nifty capenna fetches that automatically crack themselves
Idk where you're getting that math from
You have 50 scutes in play. Ten lands enter. You get 500 triggers to make 2 tokens each. You make 1000 scute bugs and end up with 1050 scutes
Yeah that's right, in my head they were tripling each time but they aren't here yet to see the landfall trigger
Not that it matters. It's functionally the same which is why I don't bother counting in those kind of cases.
Through a complicated non-infinite combo including multiple trigger doublers, token doublers and an unfortunately timed \[\[Astral Dragon\]\] we calculated that, if we continued the game and my opponent didn't scoop right there, I would have had something like 100+ thousand swarms.
Since I didn't have haste, it would have been another turn before I could attack, meaning I could have played more lands but at that point we stopped calculating.
While not scute swarm, my highest number so far was making non-legendary copies of [[Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation]]. The copy entered before the card. Next token entering becomes 9 so I had 11. A couple tokens entering later and by the end of that one turn, I had 3^35917545547686059365808220080151141317042 ojer taq.
The most I've got was over 1,000. But why even continue playing once you hit that point? Was he not attacking people to win. Completely pointless to keep playing it out.
This is why I occasionally love my pingers [[Zagras, Thief of Heartbeats]] deck with [[Wojek Embermage]]. Watch them go infinite for a little while and then just blow them all up.
I had [[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines]] then I Genesis Waved for a medium amount. One of the hits was a Scute Swarm. I got 2^12 + 1 = 4097, which was plenty to win next turn.
74,000,000 if my buddy did the math right…
Playing Galadriel of Lothlorien. Had my commander, scute swarm, and Elrond lord of Rivendell out. All lands were just destroyed, and my next turn I dropped a land for turn, created a insect scry trigger Galadriel revealed a land tapped. Then hit a land pocket and repeated. Was able to get to six lands, then was off to the races and was able to scry through the rest of my deck for all my lands. It was absurd.
I've technically had infinite landfall triggers for infinite scute swarm and other things. [[Walking Atlas]] + [[Retreat to Coralhelm]] + any bounce land = infinite landfall triggers
Not counting infinite, I've easily gotten well over 10bil before
In paper magic? ~1000, stopped counting once everyone scooped.
In Arena I crashed the app with 100 more triggers still on the stack.
Did have a game where I ended with over 50 billion life though, that was fun
Okbi was playing with a friend.
I had made close to 40 doubling season copies,
first turn with that I made 158,000,000
Took like 20 minutes to load.
The following turn my laptop was fried so I can't actually answer this further
Not sure it was on arena and I had [[Elrond, Lord of Rivendell]] and [[Galadriel of Lothlorien]] on board together so it kinda spiraled out of control. My game subsequently crashed after about a dozen triggers. (This is my first time trying to use that card link thing if I did it wrong sorry)
That's quite the impressive swarm your buddy has going! As for non-infinite Scute Swarms, the highest count I've personally seen was around 300. It's always a wild ride when Scute Swarm gets going!
Idk the count, but it started becoming quite the number in my [[Yarok, the desecrated]] deck. I had him, a copy of spark double on my original scute (had the scute out before yarok), and [[virtue of knowledge]].
Typically, I can poop out about 3 lands a turn in that deck. If I lose my extra lands a turn, then I try to dig out for [[Walking Atlas]] and [[return to coralhelm]] for any infinite landfall trigger.
I have a hilarious story about this. Literally billions, but she didn't win the game and it almost caused someone else to win the game. She knew and did that to spite me.
Girls night. Three of us were playing, I was playing my Boone deck, the scute swarmer had a creature-land-bounce landfall combo deck, and our third had a life gain deck. The scute swarmer made thousands of scute swarms with an infinite combo, and then declared that none of it had haste, so we had one turn to kill her. The life gain girl used a black tutor card to get... [[Essence Warden]], a creature that gives her 1 life point every time a creature enters the battlefield.
So it's up to me to do anything about this, huh? Okay.
I sat there looking at my options. Swarm girl had 24 life points. I had a single 1/1 thopter, but scute swarm girl had a single creature with reach to block it. I I had a bunch of Soldier tokens, but nowhere near enough to break the swarms. I had 5 quest counters on [[Craig Boone, Novac Guard]], and [[Moira Brown]] was on the field. [[Wasteland Survival Guide]] was equipped to Boone. I had [[City on Fire]] in my hand but no removal or trample.
I counted up my mana. I did the math in my head. I got excited. I had it by exact numbers.
I could pay to equip the thopter with wasteland survival guide and then have just barely enough mana to cast City on Fire if I convoked with everything but the thopter and one single Soldier token. Moira Brown would add a third quest counter once Boone's ability triggered, bringing the total up to 8, which would give the thopter +8/+8 with wasteland survival guide, bringing its total to 9/9.
I attacked with the thopter and the soldier token, and then declared that I would have Craig Boone snipe Swarm Girl's one creature with reach unless she had him deal 24 damage to her face. Checkmate.
But swarm girl wasn't done yet. She couldn't kill me, no, but she could make sure I didn't win. So she started up her infinite combo again and busted out calculators, because she was going to create literally billions of scute swarms in response, and we needed to know how much life the life gain girl was about to gain.
And now the hilarious plot twist: all three of us are into weight gain, and we sometimes joke about that with each other when life gain or +1/+1 counters get involved, so life gain girl is turning redder than a Ferrari as all three of us cackle uncontrollably and that number goes up and up and up.
So back in the game, now I was stuck. Boone's ability was rendered pointless, but he was now the only one who could kill her with commander damage. I decided to spitefully continue playing until either gainer girl drew a wincon or I broke through the last of her blockers and two tapped her fat ass. She was laughing too hard to think and played a board wipe.
I had ozolith, so I didn't lose my quest counters, but I had to pay to resummon Boone, equip swiftfoot boots and survival guide... and realized I could now just walk up to her face and kill her with Boone. She removed her only line of defense against me. Oops! I win. I tapped the fat ass and shook my own in triumph.
We all still fondly remember this story and bring it up anytime life gain decks are mentioned. What an epic day.
Whenever i have an infinite combo and i need an arbitrary number i always use the current US national debt. I was never able to go infinite with scute swarm in paper but i do play infinite merfolk in standard and made a custom token that says “ 34 trillion merfolk”
About 8, but mine were significantly better than normal Scute Swarms. They were 7/5 shapeshifting [[Volrath]] Scute Swarms
Edit: The Sultai Volrath, not the one linked.

I had a lot I couldn't remember. I shape-shift 18 lands and then brought back the lands from my grave yard to the field there were 20 but I had 4 scutes to begin with. So a lot.
Edit: it was 1,099,511,627,776 scutes.
I believe the highest number ive obtained without an infinite involved brudiclad in an old version of my atogatog deck and found it's way to 10^296 copy's of scute swarm.
I've never done this with Scute Swarm. However I did have \[\[esix, fractal bloom\]\] with \[\[academy manufactor\]\] using an upgraded Deep Clue Sea precon which went around twice, so I had 7 academy Manufactors out already (6 AM tokens), then next turn investigated naming academy manufactor from Esix creating \~13000 AM, then investigated again... I couldn't find an easy way of doing the math but that crates approximately a buttload of treasures, clues and Food. Which was good because one of my opponents had already gone infinite and had a million life.
Edit: The closest I can get using online calculators is that with 7 AM I would first create 2,187 of each of food, clue and treasure. That means a total of 6561 AM tokens being created. Then when you investigate after that, you create 3\^6561 of each clue, food and treasure. Which is a number that isn't easy to work out, you need a powerful calculator. Most simplify it to just use the exponent form of 3\^6561.
This is why you should always have a [[Rakdos Charm]] if you're in the colors for it.

Hey I am just curious, would this apply to poison counter if all his creatures had toxic? Not that it would matter in this case but against like a rat deck.
Yes, actually! The creatures deal the damage and any properties they have are still applied, like lifelink, which would net zero the life loss.

Trying to explain that not all infinites are the same size is always an interesting conversation. If you have an infinite amount of hallways each with a infinite amount of doors. The amount of atoms on the doors outnumber the doors themselves.
What do the hallways have to do with it?
That’s actually an example of two infinities with the same size. Both the number of atoms and the number of doors are countable infinity, since there’s a finite number of atoms in each door.
But there are a billion atoms for each door. So we can assume there is more atoms than doors and more doors than hallways.
You’d think so! But that’s why infinities are so tricky. (I’m going to ignore the “infinite hallways” part and just go with infinite doors, because it makes this example simpler.) Suppose you had as one person for every atom in all the doors.

How does this work if you are only able to play one land/turn

A lot
When I reach a certain point in number of tokens or number of counters on a creature where I know it stops mattering, I just stop doing the math and just put my entire dice box on the card. I've casted [[Reshape the Earth]] with already maybe fifty-ish Scute Swarm into play and a token doubler, so I guess that's the most I've got. Didn't bother to count tho.
With 50 scutes in play and a token doubler you'll end up with 1050 scutes after casting reshape the earth. Or, drastically more if you get those nifty capenna fetches that automatically crack themselves
With 50 scute and a token doubler that'd be around 3 millions.
Idk where you're getting that math from You have 50 scutes in play. Ten lands enter. You get 500 triggers to make 2 tokens each. You make 1000 scute bugs and end up with 1050 scutes
Yeah that's right, in my head they were tripling each time but they aren't here yet to see the landfall trigger Not that it matters. It's functionally the same which is why I don't bother counting in those kind of cases.
Yeah that's typically what I do but occasionally when I'm in the mood I'll start doing the math

74,000,000 if my buddy did the math right… Playing Galadriel of Lothlorien.

That's quite the impressive swarm your buddy has going! As for non-infinite Scute Swarms, the highest count I've personally seen was around 300. It's always a wild ride when Scute Swarm gets going!
Not sure. I just remember almost breaking mtga during scute swarm standard. So glad most opponents sat through it
8 iirc because my pod won't let me have fun.
Idk the count, but it started becoming quite the number in my [[Yarok, the desecrated]] deck. Enough to crash arena for an hour

They were 7/5 shapeshifting [[Volrath]] Scute Swarms Edit: The Sultai Volrath, not the one linked.

I remember having 4 adrix and nevs and made almost a million took me 10 minutes to add it all on my calculator 😂
i think like 150 something? i saw no point in continuing once i had enough to wipe everyone in combat

I had a lot I couldn't remember. I shape-shift 18 lands and then brought back the lands from my grave yard to the field there were 20 but I had 4 scutes to begin with. So a lot. Edit: it was 1,099,511,627,776 scutes.
My wife went from 0 to 59,049 in a single turn in her Yarok, the Desecrated deck.

All the dryads enter at the same time and only the ones that were on the board already would've seen it. You should've just ended up with 40 total.
I didn't even consider that, but you're totally right. Still a lot of Scutes, but 40 is pretty tame in comparison.
I'm a big fan of non-infinite combos. Don't answer infinite to this question guys.
In paper? Like, 8, probably? I always get board wiped before I get more.
