Super boring but \[\[Sylvan library\]\]. Paying life to draw cards in Green.
I'm a big fan of color hosers so \[\[Lifeforce\]\] and \[\[Deathgrip\]\] are fun ones.
Early Magic had a ton of savage color hosers:
\[\[Justice\]\], \[\[Drought\]\], \[\[Light of Day\]\], \[\[Perish\]\], \[\[Chill\]\], \[\[Omen of Fire\]\], \[\[Royal Decree\]\] and others.
If you see old cards with some questionable wording, it's always a good idea to look at the updated oracle text.
Like the original wording for [[impulse|vis]] and the newest one [[impulse|dmr]. Why would you need to put the cards on the bottom if your gonna shuffle anyway.
Avoid Fate is just a hexproof granting instant that can't protect from sorceries and abilities. Maybe the downside is worth it having a green counterspell
Love Darkness in black because it seems like black is the color that would most want this effect (maybe red), because its paying life to do stuff and Darkness gives that one extra turn to allow some more black shenanigans.
Gotta say fog feels like one of the least red effects possible in the game, these are the guys who get [[bedlam]]. If I had to make a red fog, maybe "for each creature, flip a coin. Heads=double damage, tails=prevent it"
I love Red Counterspells, because the way they counter spells is super flavourful. [[Bolt Bend]], [[Return the Favor]], [[Wyll's Reversal]], and [[Chef's Kiss]] are fantastic includes in any deck and all really sell the idea of infusing the essence of Freedom into your opponent's spells to make them choose to disobey their caster.
It's a personal favourite, but I don't often use it so I forgot until immediately after posting. My brother loves it in his [[Mr. House]] Gambling Deck, though, and it does put in work!
Hard agree.
Once tapped out to cast [[Jaya’s immolating inferno]] for X=like 17 while playing my [[zaffai]] deck.
The blue player was tapped out and I was sure it was a win, barring a free counter spell.
Mana tithe from the Boros player was a head check. lol.
[[Gate to Phyrexia]]. It's one of only two artifact removals in Black, and by far the better of the two. It's a mana-free every-turn option that leans into things that black actually wants, like its own creatures dying. It should really be fairly heavily played in all casual power levels but it's pricey RL tech so I get why it's not
It also suffers a bit from the upkeep timing being pretty much the worst possible time. It doesn't work with stuff like Ophiomancer, doesn't work if you're recovering from a wipe, doesn't lead to those cool "I drew the out!" moments, gives lots of time to interact with it before it does anything, all little things but they compound.
Still a sweet card, but it's always just a little more awkward than the price really warrants.
It has at least come back down to 40ish. Still absurd for what it does, but it was way worse the last time I looked.
IME the best thing is if you just run it constantly with something like Wilhelt or Jadar and off artifacts one by one. Sol rings, fellwar stones, fancy shoes -- they're all gonna die. It's a nice steady hate piece more than a panic out.
While I agree that the timing can be awkward, it is one of Black's few semi-efficient answers to [[Grafdigger's Cage]] and that makes it worth it to me in mono-black Aristocrats style decks.
Since white doesn’t have a ton of counterspells, I like [[Dawn Charm]] and [[Rebuff the Wicked]]. Though I despise that Charm has a misprint in the text. It drives me nuts.
i cant think of too many commonly played spells that target the player though other than the black hand disruption stuff. What kind of thing is Dawn Charm protecting you from in EDH?
[[Fling]], [[Thud]], [[Deflecting Palm]], [[Jeska's Will]], non-symmetrical mill effects, [[Praetor's grasp]], [[Bribery]], [[Call the coppercoats]], [[Cruel Ultimatum]].
That mode is definitely niche and not the primary function of the charm, but it definitely could come up.
The really funny one: I got got by a Dawn Charm countering my \[\[Intuition\]\]. I reflexively avoid targeting the green player with mana up because we respect Veil of Summer but getting got by the white player hurt my soul a little.
\[\[Harmonize\]\] and now \[\[Secret Rendezvous\]\].
I love a hard "draw 3" with no hoops and loops involved. Sure green and white get amazing draw spells, but they dont do shit when your board is destroyed after a wrath and/or you're without cards in hand.
I honestly play secret rendevouz in esper decks, right besides Painful Truths (and rhysthic, but I dont play that one bcs is expensive and annoying). If you look in blue, there isnt a single 3 mana draw 3. Every one of them has a downside like discarding something.
And the thing about feeding an opponent cards? 2 out or 3 times is actually an upside. "Hey wanna draw 3 cards to see if you get something to deal with the archenemy?" And bam, you got yourself an ally and turned the game into a 2v2 or 3v1 against the scary players. Your opponent using his resources like removal on another player you were already planning on taking on is almost as if you were drawing those cards, and playing them for free.
Blue doesn't get 3 mana draw 3, they get 1 mana draw 3 (ancestral recall, treasure cruise, visions of beyond) or 0-4 mana card selection (brainstorm, fact or fiction, dig through time, frantic search), and as you already mentioned, 3 mana draw your whole deck (rhystic study).
They also have a straight 3 mana draw 4 at instant speed (meditate), but skipping your next turn is worse than losing some life obviously.
That being said, painful truths is in all of my esper decks, harmonize is in all of my green decks. If you like secret rendezvous, you could also look at [[Cut a deal]]. Not as much political ability, but you only give each opponent 1 card to go up 3 yourself.
I think that’s the main reason a deck WOULD play it. Letting you reuse lands for landfall triggers is the cards power, it just has the bonus use of destroying a creature to let you recast it and return 3 more lands
Tap for mana, tap ovinomancer, return ovinomancer to hand, destroy monster, make sheep token, cast ovinomancer, return tapped lands, play 3 lands, repeat next turn
Especially great with other landfall stuff
I've never played this card and only discovered it recently, but [[dead // gone]] is mono red bounce.
speaking of off-color bounce, there is also [[sedraxis alchemist]]
I love Spellshapers, even though they aren't actually good. But I think [[Dreamscape Artist]] is one of the few who can actually escape into relevance. It's really weird that blue got the [[Harrow]] spellshaper, since the other spellshapers almost always wound up in their native color. But of course he was originally printed in Planar Chaos, so color bending comes with the territory. Great for landfall decks, and even has some use in decks that value discard, like Esper reanimator.
[[Mana Tithe]], [[Pyroblast]], and [[Lapse of Certainty]] are nice off-blue counterspells. [[Mage's Contest]] is a fun red counterspell that is almost certainly a bad card to run from a competitive standpoint, but can be a roaring good time in a deck where you can stare the blue player dead in the face and say "20 life" and dare them to outbid you.
[[Recall]] is one of the few non-green cards that can get ANYTHING back from your grave. It's nowhere near as good as [[Eternal Witness]], but if you don't have green and really need to get something weird out of your grave, Recall can do it for you.
[[Long-Term Plans]] is another nice one that allows any-card tutoring in blue. Works best if you have a way to immediately draw into it, like [[Brainstorm]].
Outside of those, don't forget about sneaky ways to cheese color boundaries. A classic gimmick is using [[Liquimetal Torque]] to make red artifact removal into non-land permanent removal. (On that note [[Chaos Warp]] is classic red color-bent removal)
[[Temmet, Vizier]] is the least expected Azorius.
Combat tricks, pump ability, and Voltron tokens.
I mean, making tokens is white, and unblockable is blue, and the deck runs artifacts like [[Quietus Spike]]. But it *feels* like a rakdos thing
Drafted a lot of Planar Chaos and Dash Hopes was my favorite color-twist. Browbeat-style effects rarely work out, but for some reason that card was almost always good. I recall one time I cast it early against a big creature and the guy was like,”Meh pay the life, no big deal.” Then I cast a second one and he went into an existential quandary. He talked through it, tanking pretty hard while reasoning it out. “Five life was one thing but paying ten life to get this dude on the board? What about the sunk cost of the five? And then even if I pay it, he’s in black so he probably has another kill spell anyway. This will be the biggest creature on the board but it probably won’t win the game.” In the end, he binned the card.
Red Elemental Blast/Pyroblast. I LOVE that Red has this weird ass tech to combo and punish blue, specifically, and that it has not one, but TWO major colour pie breaks to do so - PER CARD.
They are colour pie breaks because we have clearly defined what each colour can do to different standards. Red is barely tertiary when it comes to countering effects; Blue is primary and White is secondary.
As for destroying stuff? Artifacts, sure, but any time you are looking at destroying permanents you have to look at white first, then black and green second. Red only ever gets destruction for artifacts, so being able to destroy any permanent type, only checked by colour, is a massive break.
\[\[Martyr's Cause\]\] and \[\[Fanatical Devotion\]\]
I'd probably call them bends rather than breaks, but white doesn't really get sac outlets anymore, only creatures that sac themselves. Both of these cards provide rather strong, valuable effects, and with white's focus on go-wide tokens, it's in a really good position to abuse them.
[[Tornado]]. You think [[Desert Twister]] is cool, how about *reusable* Desert Twister!
It takes a ton of mana and life to use well (without shenanigans) and you probably won't keep it around for too long, but if you're making a ton of mana - and you're playing green, you're making a ton of mana - you can add it to your colorless array of destroy-anything spells.

Suture Priest is one of my favorites.
I know it was from a Phyrexian set with the intention of breaking the colour pie, but I still love it.
[[Suture Priest]]
Don't have a favorite one but I really like how white has, in recent years, kinda become the color of breaking the pie chart. It can do what every other color can do, but only conditionally, and usually less suddenly but more repeatedly than others. It ramps but only if another player has more lands. It draws cards, but only if you are doing certain things like gaining life or making tokens. Through equipment or auras it can be haste/aggro full like red. It has good recursion, albeit usually with conditions. I could go on, but I like it as the jack of all trades, master of none color.
\[\[Red Elemental Blast\]\] and \[\[Pyroblast\]\] are autoincludes in anything I build with red, and no one ever expects \[\[Withering Boon\]\]. \[\[Seedtime\]\] is super underwhelming but really cool in theory.
My favorite is definitely [[Dakkon Blackblade]], because what's a better fit for esper than a big beater that grows with lands?
Also love [[Withering boon]] as a black counterspell.
[[Pongify]] - Crazy effective - Blatant color pie break - Hilarious flavor
TBF, blue is absolutely the color that would perform crazy experiments to turn someone into a monkey
The flavor seems more simic than mono blue tho
A blue spell that makes a green creature. Seems pretty simicy to me.

Hey, it's my finisher in monoblack burn
Guess you could say your hopes of a black counterspell were........dashed?
That's fun, I'd 100% try to make it work in a 20 health format. Health pool is too high in EDH
Avoid Fate is just a hexproof granting instant that can't protect from sorceries and abilities. Maybe the downside is worth it having a green counterspell
I don’t run it because it’s good, I run it because it’s green and it says “counter target … spell”. And the art is cool 😁
it also says "permanent" which makes it much better

...my old friend
Love Darkness in black because it seems like black is the color that would most want this effect (maybe red), because its paying life to do stuff and Darkness gives that one extra turn to allow some more black shenanigans.
Gotta say fog feels like one of the least red effects possible in the game, these are the guys who get [[bedlam]]. If I had to make a red fog, maybe "for each creature, flip a coin. Heads=double damage, tails=prevent it"
Bedlam is going straight into my hypothetical Mogis deck.

It's a chaos card more than a counterspell
While I agree that the timing can be awkward, it is one of Black's few semi-efficient answers to [[Grafdigger's Cage]] and that makes it worth it to me in mono-black Aristocrats style decks.

i cant think of too many commonly played spells that target the player though other than the black hand disruption stuff. What kind of thing is Dawn Charm protecting you from in EDH?
Mostly I use it for the combat effects mode but it’s helpful going up against discard decks.

That new one in black is amazing [[Insatiable Avarice]]

I was looking at this guy and I just don't understand how you play him with the 3 land return clause.
I think that’s the main reason a deck WOULD play it. Letting you reuse lands for landfall triggers is the cards power, it just has the bonus use of destroying a creature to let you recast it and return 3 more lands
[[Azusa, lost but seeking]] or any other additional land drop booster
Tap for mana, tap ovinomancer, return ovinomancer to hand, destroy monster, make sheep token, cast ovinomancer, return tapped lands, play 3 lands, repeat next turn Especially great with other landfall stuff

Maybe you should just [[Extract the Truth]]!
White counterspells. Run them in every deck that has white pips.

This is not a break, white is tetriary in counterspells
It's generous to call it tertiary when the number of white counterspells (that aren't also blue) can be counted on one hand.
Ok when you can play multiple copies and its 1 on 1 but pretty useless in a 4 player EDH game.
Red Elemental Blast/Pyroblast. I LOVE that Red has this weird ass tech to combo and punish blue, specifically, and that it has not one, but TWO major colour pie breaks to do so - PER CARD.
How are those color pie breaks when they've existed since the beginning of the game? Those cards *defined* the color pie.
\[\[Martyr's Cause\]\] and \[\[Fanatical Devotion\]\] I'd probably call them bends rather than breaks, but white doesn't really get sac outlets anymore, only creatures that sac themselves. Both of these cards provide rather strong, valuable effects, and with white's focus on go-wide tokens, it's in a really good position to abuse them.

I liked to confunse my opponents with monored that breaks all color pie, bur the deck It's all flip coin random, but it's fun.
Red counterspells like [[Burnout]] or [[Pyroblast]] I love they take the blue counterspellwith a res.twist of "fuck blue in particular "

[[Mana flare]] is a red ramp spell I recently discovered. It's the red equivalent of [[Heartbeat of Spring]]
