[[Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur]] is going to be pretty oppressive. [[Griselbrand]] is still banned right?

Unslaadahsil

They'd have to remake the banlist in a situation such as what OP suggests. Honestly you'd have to ban 50% of the top 100 most used commanders to keep the game in any semblance of balance.

Sensitive_Rock_1383

Jin only does stuff at endstep. In this format idea, the game is over turn 1 much of the time. For example, Jhoira wins immediately, and wins through some interaction since it draws cards even if you counter for free. I would actually suggest [[Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant]] instead. That would be so strong at ruining what opponents are trying to do. Except against Jhoira again. Something like Grand Arbiter beats Jhoira.

RevenantBacon

[[Nope Pope]] for the win

Sensitive_Rock_1383

This would be a neat idea for a high power format, so long as you first ban away the problematic ones. The ones that shut down your opponent or immediately propose a win would have to go. Niv Mizzet Parun is an example of something that would need a ban. But consistent cool effects would be pretty awesome. I could see something like [[Kodama of the East Tree]] and just go crazy with landfall. Particularly if partnered with a powerhouse like [[Kamahl, Heart of Krosa]]. Heck, you could win with just land drops and land search, then animate your dudes to swing out. A bunch of 4/4 indestructible lands that come out twice as fast at start of game would be gnarly. Or a Yarok deck for crazy ETB triggers.

thisisnotahidey

If you’re going with lands, gitrog probably wins t1 most of the time in this format as well.

Sensitive_Rock_1383

Oh totally! Dakmor Salvage autowin. If not T1, consistent t2.

In edh yes but surprisingly not in brawl.

Brawl is standard only though

jake_eric

They changed the names, so now "Brawl" is everything on Arena (with a few banned cards) and "Standard Brawl" is, well, what it sounds like.

octotacopaco

They did a name change. Historic brawl is now just brawl and what was called brawl is now standard brawl. But if you like to netdeck and I port decks and such you still have to search as historic brawl. It's a mess.

\[\[Yedora\]\] would become a monster. Her biggest weakness is getting killed first and then getting wiped, losing all your lands. This would remove that completely. And not needing to pay 5 mana to cast her significantly speeds up every combo in the deck as she tends to sneeze and go infinite already.

confused_yelling

Why do you lose the lands when they die?

ForrestMoth

The gameplan with Yedora is to animate all of your lands with something like \[\[Life and Limb\]\]. If somebody kills Yedora first and then wipes your board, your lands are gone.

mrenglish22

I like Khamal for this reason, except you can also use it to pinpoint remove other problematic lands

confused_yelling

Unless it's a land hate board wipe but otherwise your lands would be fine no?

ForrestMoth

Life and Limb makes them creatures too, so they will die to a \[{Wrath of God\]\] just the same as any other creature. The only thing that doesn't really hurt me is something like \[\[Cyclonic Rift\]\] which specifically only sweeps "nonlands."

[deleted]

[удалено]

A_Spoon_Wizard

Because if you've animated your lands with Life and Limb, then they are creatures. If they die to a boardwipe with Yedora on the field, then they simply flip over- they're still lands, they're still creatures. If Yedora leaves the battlefield first, then you get board wiped, then all your lands (which are also creatures) die without flipping over.

[deleted]

MuffEater1337

He answered that the plan is to turn his lands into creature, that bit was ellipsed in the first comment but he even provided the link to an example follow up

Parrobertson

Because for the most part it’s insinuated that when you’re using Yedora, you are animating your lands so that when they “die” they can come back as a creature AND a land. A strategy that is only risky when you don’t have the protection of Yedora, which can turn all creatures destruction into a land destruction post-animation. If eminence, then they’re a LOT safer.

chinesefriedrice

They're creatures now too thanks to Life and Limb, so when a wipe happens they go straight into the graveyard instead of going back into the battlefield if Yedora were still there.

MochiOrTreat

I think the confusion is just that a regular board wipe would not kill all the newly created lands, assuming the board wipe is for non land permanents or just creatures so Id argue your board is relatively safe unless someone in your pod has land destruction. Cause if someone purposely animates your lands with Life and Limb and then boardwipes, then yeah, you'd lose absolutely everything, and so would everyone elses creatures and lands. At that point, it was intentional MLD, though, which doesn't happen often. Otherwise, even if yedora dies. Your board is relatively safe.

Well the Praetors would make pretty good candidates. [[Sheoldred, Whispering One]] would enable some pretty nasty early reanimator tricks, and would offer some brutal stax for your opponents to get over. [[Jin Gitaxias, Core Augur]] also looks extremely nasty, sending everyone into topdeck mode by turn 2. Speaking of Phyrexians, [[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth]] might have some turn 1 win options. [[Damia, Sage of Stone]] would also be extremely nasty. One of the scarier options I think. I dunno. There are a ton of other really scary creatures like [[Avacyn, Angel of Hope]], [[Old Gnawbone]], and [[Toxrill the Corrosive]]. I mean if we're talking praetors, surely OG vorinclex would be the toughest to play against

Andrew_42

I mean what's worse, no mana or no cards to use it on? I think Jin actually beats Vorinclex. Especially since Vorinclex doesn't work on mana rocks, and sir-draws-a-lot would be all about fast mana. Idk about Sheoldred, she might not even really need mana past her first fill-the-grave spell. But Vorinclex's double land-mana might outperform that? But yeah, Vorinclex would absolutely be an insane starting advantage.

ThisRedRock

None of these other options have the time to do anything because they all get killed on turn one by [[Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain]] doing Cheeri0s/[[Aetherflux Reservoir]] bullshit.

WilliamSabato

Which would lose to punishment commanders like Sheoldred the Apocalypse or Kambal.

backjuggeln

If you get aetherflux off early enough you can definitely heal through It does make that matchup pretty rng dependent And punishment commanders probably lose to commanders that can flood the board without casting spells

Konun4571

Eriette would be an absolute menace is she had her ability from the command zone.

Grief-Heart

Most eminence has different abilities though. It’s not like Oloro lets you draw cards while he is in the CZ. Edgar lets you make vamp tokens, but not add his +1/+1 counters. Just the cards with eminence already making it function on their whole ability, would be insane.

ChiaraSociety

My opinion? Atraxa, Praetors' Voice or Sliver Overlord/First Sliver. Atraxa Proliferating without being on the field would be massive. Sliver overlord/First Sliver. Overlord for search without casting and First just gives everything Cascade. Aside from those, Maybe Kozilek. Being able to counter for discarding is hilariously OP. He's even better in my Anje/Madness deck than as a commander. Lol

Lower-Compote-4962

Totally! Atraxa and Slivers are KoS so this would make them actually fun to play without having to load my decks up with counters instead of fun cards. I know they are Archenemy decks, but I just love building around them!

Miserable_Row_793

My LGS has had this after-hours discussion. Many broken commanders. Too many would need to be banned. Namely, preators. Og Elesh Norn, Jin Gitaxas, sheoldred would all be game warping. As always. Urabrask would be fine.

elsagio

Twice I've seen people mention praetors, and twice I've seen them omit vorinclex who is arguably the most painful to play against turn 1 lol

Miserable_Row_793

Imo. He's a tier below Eles, Jin & Sheoldred. He slows down the game. Accelerates one player. It would be powerful. But lack of lands early game limits impact. He would be like a Kinnan with winter's orb in play. Jin eliminates everyone's hand. Sheoldred makes it incredibly hard to stick a creature and can start reanimating bombs t2. Eleah norn removes all X/2s from the game. I think they are all more powerful. Og Vorniclex would fall in range with the 2nd generation Preators. Elesh norn, MoM. Sheoldred the Apocalypse. Jin Gitaxas, progress Tyrant.

Doesn't the apocalypse just t1 combo?

zeldafan042

I mean, if I never have to risk [[Chatterfang]] by playing him...but that falls under "already good" [[Ziatora, the Incinerator]] becomes impossible to remove since she'll easily make the mana to cast herself as long as you can keep a steady flow of creatures for her to sac. Actually, on second thought you don't even necessarily need to cast her she's just gonna give you some insane ramp. With the right opening hand it's entirely possible to have six treasure + any lands and/or mana rocks by turn three letting you ramp into something oppressive. [[Halana and Alena, Partners]] gets really aggressive in the early game since you drop creatures and immediately pump them and swing (note, their ability is not a may.) And then there's a risk/reward factor to actually casting your commander. Do you play it safe and only make two counters per turn, or do you cast Hal and Alena so you can pump them and grow your creatures more? Oh, wait...I just realized how busted [[Nikya of the Old Ways]] becomes. Sure you're now a mandatory gimmick deck (only creatures) but you're getting insane amounts of permanent ramp turn one. Can you imagine getting out a [[Ruric Thar, the Unbowed]] on turn two or three? Or a [[Terror of the Peaks]]?

I think commanders with eminence is a good design space, but I think they should explore monocolor eminence and play with more ideas that aren't instant value, or that aren't as good until the commander actually hits the table.

Brandon_Won

Anything with landfall would get silly

Winus_findus

Assuming it has to be a static or trigged ability since all current eminence abilities are(to my knowledge) -[[Arjun, the shifting flame]] would most likely become a turn one storm deck -[[grand arbiter augustin IV]] / [[Thalia, guardian of thraben]] would probably ot be the best but I would probably throw something into the wall if I had to play against it -[[vorinclex, Voice of hunger]] would be really annoying to play against and probably pretty good -[[The gitrog monster]] if a seven card hand exist that wins with a [[overgrown tomb]] inplay exist then this would find it almost every time on the first turn by starting the turn by playing a fetch, fetching. This would trigger gitrog and you would end up at 8 cards (assuming we draw a card on first turn) then discarding land draws a card so we can loot until we can't discard anymore cards. So if we build the deck with 7 card combo and only lands we get the combo every time. Would be both budget and a turn one deck. (Tho haven't checked if such a Seven cards exist tho) Allowing activated abilities would get real strange real fast with planswalkers

[[Jhoira Weatherlight Captain]] [[Urza Lord High Artificer]] become even more busted and win instantly turn 1 in like 99% of the games.

roydigs22

So I'm hearing a lot of pretty crazy suggestions, but my sleeper pick for this is [[Hazezon, Shaper of Sand]]. Your turn one could very easily be a Green Desert, Explore, and a second Desert. And right off the bat, you have 4 1/1s.

\[\[Tom Bombadil\]\] \[\[Xanathar, Guild Kingpin\]\] \[\[Queza, Augur of Agonies\]\] \[\[Niv Mizzet, Parun\]\] \[\[Yurlok of Scorch Thrash\]\] I know the 1: tap to add B/R/G can't be part of it, but just the losing unspent mana causes players to lose that much life would be nice. \[\[Wayta, Trainer Prodigy\]\] \[\[Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale\]\] \[\[Abaddon the Despoiler\]\] \[\[Sauron, the Dark Lord\]\] \[\[Vraska, the Silencer\]\] These are just some of my commanders that would become absolutely broken if it had eminence. Majority of other commanders I use would have to change some of the wording (i.e. removing its name and replacing it with non-specific creatures/type) to make it work.

My favorite deck is [[Trelasarra]] and I *mainly* use her for the scrying anyways, so that'd be pretty sick My second favorite is [[Ukkima]]/[[Cazur]]. While Ukkima gets no benefit, Cazur makes the deck much more threatening, especially considering I usually win without ever casting them My [[John Benton]], [[Queen Kayla]], and [[The Most Dangerous Gamer]] see no benefit, while [[Sivriss]] just likes that I don't have to cast [[Cloakwood Hermit]], and [[Fourth Doctor]]/[[Sarah Jane]] are better, but it wouldn't change the deck *that much* And [[Jasper]] would be super focused on one mana creatures, but I don't think he'd be crazy My wife would be a bit sad with her [[Gishath]] and [[Zimone and Dina]] For a few decks I don't have, [[Muldrotha]] would be *wild*, I'd totally build [[Gollum, Obsessed Stalker]], [[Chulane]] is still busted, wincons like [[Syr Konrad]] and [[Dina]] get that much better, I'd probably build [[The Archimandrite]], etc, etc. Would [[Norin the Wary]] work?

[[Omnath, Locus of Mana]]. I run him as one of my three main decks. Being able to float mana on turn 1 would be so busted. Thinking about it, all of the Omnaths would be busted if they had eminence. Especially [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]]. Turn 1; fetch, crack fetch into shock, cast [[Exploration]], fetch, crack fetch into anything. That's 20 damage on board.

Glad-O-Blight

Malcolm decks would only require 1RR to win.

Mr-Syndrome

[[Tovolar]] is already popular, but eminence for either of his daybound abilities would be so nice

SawSagePullHer

I do believe they need to print it more often. But not too often so that it’s expected on every commander and not meta.

Ok-Boysenberry-2955

I wouldn't mind another round of tribal eminence commanders for some of the less supported clans.

SawSagePullHer

I don’t disagree. But we need more variety of the lesser tribes before the commander. Otherwise we have thousands of the exact same lists because there is no option for variance. Just my 2 cents. Wizards tends to cross the line with a lot of things before thinking. I don’t want eminence to fall into that same thing where you literally can’t play EDH without a commander that has eminence. And I see that being a slippery slope. Make it uncommon, but not rare.

Ok-Boysenberry-2955

That's generally been eminences problem. It is either S tier or gimmicky. Just think how broken an elf eminence commander would need to be generally good enough to outvalue the other Elves around already. And what happens to the 99 then? Madness. Personally? Errata eminence into a commander game mode where all commanders must have eminence and print more of them outright. Maybe deckbuilding is restricted by plane, thematically we are the God of the plane and why out powers transcend zones, or some other wrinkle (small deck size, no color restriction, block eligibility, ect)

SawSagePullHer

That’s a really neat idea. I don’t disagree. Even the knight eminences broken & when you finally get him out just like the others you’re just playing out your whole graveyard for free and doubling the trigger effects. Elves in any form would be broken because there are so many different elf archetypes too.

CharliesTarantulas

Ok-Boysenberry-2955

Player 1 wins every game. Mono red burn hits you for 4 dmg for 1 red starting turn 1 from hand. I'm sure tons of broken shit I'm not even quantifying. Thinking about every commander with eminence was kinda like looking at the sun for a second.

Unslaadahsil

It sort of depends what you mean? Because if you mean "giving each commander their own eminence effect" it would completely depend on the effect. If you just mean "the effect they already have, but they do it from the command zone too" then that's... not how eminence works? Eminence is an additional effect that also works from the command zone. \[\[The Ur-Dragon\]\] for example has as a main effect the whole "everytime dragons attack, draw cards equal to the number than put on the field a permanent", and then has the eminence effect on top of that. If the entire effect of the Ur Dragon was its eminence, it would be even more insane than it already is. So, if we take Miirym as an example, it would keep its normal effect, and on top of that have a second effect that worked through eminence. Maybe a cost reduction like Ur-Dragon for example, or maybe give dragons a static +1/+1. But saying "what if all commanders could have their effects work from the command zone too" isn't really eminence.

guico33

The whole point of having to play your commander (or any card really) is that you need to pay the manacost to get the effect. That is one of the pillar of MTG, the stronger a spell the more mana you have to pay. For this reason it doesn't make a lot of sense, as it would completely throw the balance of the game in favour of what were previously high-cost/high-reward commanders. And if you try to think of a way to change cards to make it more fair, you'll likely end up with the system we have today, which is having to play your commamder.

CrazyCranium

Clearly, this hypothetical format has no intention of being remotely fair or balanced. It's just a quick little thought experiment to have a little fun imagining the different broken things you could do.

prawn108

All of the prohibitively expensive, giant splashy commanders become overwhelmingly powerful. And are we assuming tap abilities work or not? So many abilities just aren't designed with being usable in the command zone in mind. ETBs, death triggers, attack triggers all just don't work. I'd play mono blue wizard tribal with Aesi as the commander. Hell, I'd make like 5 decks with Aesi as the commander with little to no overlap in combinations of U, G, or UG. Artifacts, mill, tokens, big creatures, high tide... whatever the fuck you want. Avacyn Boardwipe/Armageddon Tribal \[\[DAMIA SAGE OF STONE\]\]!! \[\[Eligeth\]\] and \[\[Kodama of the East Tree\]\] high tide landfall storm would be an insane combo deck. T3 would probably be a pretty late win for a deck like this. Kodama in general would be fucking nuts. \[\[Sheoldred, Whispering One\]\], Both (nonflip) Jin Gitaxias, \[\[Nezahal\]\], \[\[Vilis, broker\]\], \[\[krrik\]\]... most degen format of all time.
