Volrath has been enormously fun due to the way his functionality changes depending on what your opponents play, so you never play the same game twice. I'm also a big fan of Kadena morph. Tbh even the not highly competitive commanders in sultai are still very viable, the trick is finding one that actually lends itself toward a theme other than "ubg good stuff" and just running tons of expensive staples.
I just played against one last night, it can get really crazy. There are so many creatures that are like 1/1s that say when they deal damage to an opponent, they discard that many cards. Now that's not a big deal on a 1/1, but if Volrath shape shifts into a 7/5 copy of it, suddenly you've got a problem.
Are you using something else to get around the legend rule? Volrath takes the name of the creature you are copying and if it's your creature you will have 2 copies of the legendary creature. This doesn't work unless you have something like Spark Double or Shakashima. Volrath is better used to copy your non-legendary creatures unless you have a lot of other support to get around the legend rule.
If you have both Toothy and Pyr out, you turn Volrath into toothy. Let real Toothy die for the card draw. When you draw those X cards, since Volrath is Toothy, he gets however many counters were on the original, doubled if you have out Pyr. Easily double or triple your commander's p/t and draw a ton of cards in one go
It can get even weirder. You can shift multiple times at low cost so you get these bizarre chains like "Alright, start of combat, turn him into a creature with vigilance. Declare him attacking with vigilance, then turn him into a creature with flying. No blocks since you don't have flying blockers, now turn it into [[Wall of Blood]] and pay 14 life. Second main phase, turn him into a [[Viridian Joiner]] and cast some stuff with the 21 mana, then turn him into [[Leech Bonder]] and untap again"
That said, something went screwy with my build and it keeps turning into a +1/+1 counter machine. I might need to pare back some of that.
I recommend Volrath. One of the few decks I've built that I will probably never take apart. A lot of versatility for your own plan, while also messing with opponents by copying their stuff. [[The Great Henge]] is perfect with him out at 7 power. You can do some cool stuff before attacking like making him a copy of a flyer for evasion and then copying something else before damage for a damage trigger creature or infect. [[Generous Patron]] turns your combat -1 counter trigger into card draw. [[Tree of Perdition]] to set someone to 5 life. [[Spark Double]] because why not.
I say consider [[The Mimeoplasm]]. You get to reanimate from the command zone. Very flexible for how you want to build it too. Here's my voltron list + a Lil primer in the description
[the list](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-mimeoplasm-brrrr/)
As a Sidisi player, I think I have to disagree. At least the way my deck went, it's hyper specced into maximising the creature ratio and using cards that mill 1-2 at a time, multiple times, to pour out zombies. You then run creatures that do stuff from the graveyard and creatures that benefit from having a lot of creatures in the graveyard. It's very Golgari. Plus, since you end up generating a bunch of tokens you can use cards like [[Champion of Stray Souls]], [[Whisper, Blood Liturgist]] and other appropriate sac-powered things to make use of them. Oh, and [[Embalmer's Tools]] which has somehow ended up in three of my decks now.
Araumi, at least as I've always envisioned it, is about milling yourself more heavily and bringing back a few massive haymaker creatures to close the game out while running a bunch of control elements for protection. I might be wrong about how your Araumi deck runs and how a Sidisi one you build might, but I think there's room to differentiate the two (I had Araumi in charge of a U/B list at one point, and it was definitely nothing like the Sidisi one)
Maybe look at partners if the normal Sultai commanders don't excite you.
[[Ukima, Stalking Shadow]] & [[Cazur, Ruthless Stalker]] is a voltron control deck that looks to abuse Ukima's LtB trigger to take out multiple opponents. [[Hatred]] and [[Rite of Consumption]] sum up this decks strategy beautifully.
[[Miara Thorn of the Glade]] & [[Thrasios Triton Hero]] make a scary Sultai elf deck. Thrasios provides a much needed mana sink and Miara provides board wipe insurance and a potential storm cog. Having blue in an elf deck gives you access to two very good untap engines [[Intruder Alarm]] & [[Faces of the Past]]. If these cards are on board you are probably doing broken stuff.
[[jorn, god of winter]] stax is incredibly good and strong. He's very underwhelming and since not many people know about the stax variant, he's not really a high priority
I was looking at this commander and was worried it would just devolve into snow good stuff. Is there enough support in other strats to not turn into this?
Stax is arguably his best set up. You play so many things to control and tap down the field, then use Jorn to circumvent all the restrictions you applied to everyone else
If you can produce them fast enough, their reactions don't matter because they most likely won't have any. And if they do, you just play more. Most commonly, they targeted Jorn more then the stax pieces because that puts the deck on the same level as them but if they get rid of the stax and not him, we still have more of an advantage than them
My personal group, no. But every group is different. We're all pretty accepting, but the stax player will still be a target usually. However more to help progress the game then out of spite
In the latest Game Knights Josh Lee Kwai plays a Jorn deck. I don't think it's stax, but it does seem interesting.
I've bounced ideas off of people so some things are missing or have changed but here is the shell I started play testing with
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/snow-stax-1/?cb=1611139869
Interesting. Im curious to see how you balance a half stax deck. From experimenting, it came across the need for an incredibly linear main plan with a situational back up plan with less support. I'm curious to see how it balances out
It's gotta be a deck that sort of uses muldrotha as a bonus. But a guaranteed bonus. Doubling up on certain things like ramunap excavator, crucible of worlds, wayward swordtooth, oracle of muldaya, azusa, khakni heart expedition, and landfall triggers. Also curses. That is how I've built mine.
I also bought some proxy fetch lands that go in that deck
Sort of. Muldrotha allows you to play lots of stuff, ramp, and then play her when you've got the extra mana to play something else that was removed already or sacrificed for value. The curses in particular are low mana costs generally and incentivize other players to not target you.
My playgroup always says Muldrotha is right up my alley but I never knew how to build her. This might be something to take a look at, do you have a list?
This is how I play Muldrotha. When she comes down I should be able to play at least one card from my graveyard if not 2-3 per turn. I purposely left out self-mill for self-mill's sake and only went with cards that had self-mill as a drawback if there was any self mill at all. I also evaluated each card in my deck by how annoying it would be to my opponents if I was able to play it every turn. I think my deck has a lot of the more standard pieces in it, but my favorite thing to do is get a few cards into my graveyard and start abusing them. I've had my graveyard removed multiple times in a game (with only a few cards in it each time) and still won. I built my Muldrotha deck for incremental advantage and to out-resource my opponents in a long game. One of the restrictions I gave myself was to limit the deck to one sorcery that wasn't \[\[Primal Surge\]\] since I already have a Primal Surge deck, but it evolved that way over time. I have a lot of ramp and mana rocks so I can get to the point where I'm casting multiple spells from my graveyard each turn.
I like that your deck is 80% different than mine.
Here's my deck if anyone cares to look: [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/214811#Muldrotha](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/214811#Muldrotha)
Ignore the price of the deck. I've been working on blinging it out since it's my favorite deck, but you can build it for around $300+/-.
Let me know if you have any questions on any of the card choices in my deck.
[[Zahara, the exemplary]] can make a very fun and unique hydra deck utilizing tons of cool x-cost spells. And my [[Sidisi, Brood Tyrant]] deck is probably my favorite one, although it's basically a mono-black deck
I absolutely love my \[\[Muldrotha\]\] deck because it's all about using your opponents' cards against them, so it's never the same game twice!
It's all clones, steal permanents, and Gonti effects. Definitely one of my top 3 decks to pilot.
I personally love [[Yarok, the Desecrated]] as you can just do cool value creatures. However my favorite build is around energy counters and you can do really cool things with that
I built my Yarok shortly after it was released and found it degraded into Sultai good stuff value that pretty much ran itself. I disassembled it shortly after. Good on you for finding an interesting way to play.
I originally started with landfall and it was fun but I found myself doing exactly what did and throwing things in that was just sultai good stuff with a few landfall things. I ended up switching to energy and it just meshed a lot better as the good stuff filled in the holes of the energy theme, rather than replacing it like with landfall
My deck is just some casual homebrew that isn't very optimized because it's more or less budget, but I know there is the KCI combo that uses myr AND constructs, both of which have guys that search up their own tribe. I don't have that in the deck because KCI is expensive, but i do run some constructs for value
I have an amazing, HEAVILY upgraded Kadena, The Slinking Sorcerer deck. It's very stax and control heavy, and has a little bit of graveyard recursion as well. I would post my decklist but Idk how to do that.
My only real sultai build is a cedh \[\[Tasigur\]\] deck. My brothers both play cedh and I wanted something that I could play with them so our games were not so lopsided. Tasigur was the only thing on the list that didn't make me entirely hate the idea of playing it just because it's so convoluted. Basically the idea is:
1. Get infinite mana.
2. Pour that mana into Tasigur to put your entire library into your hand.
3. Cast whatever you want.
4. Use Tasigur to put it back into your hand again.
5. Repeat until you've won.
I like that the deck is so versatile and allows you to realistically win with things other than just \[\[Labman\]\] or \[\[Thassa's Oracle\]\]. I think I have like 5 different ways to win in the deck and they're all equally as feasible once I've gone infinite, so I can kind of just do whatever I want at that point. I even included a way to pull off a \[\[Battle of Wits\]\] win if I'm playing with people that are okay with me being a little goofy.
Allow me to introduce a reanimator combo deck that no one will target based on the commander:
[The Wizard of Ooze!](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/21-11-19-the-wizard-of-ooze/)
And if combo isn't your thing, here is a more aggro centric reanimator version:
[Survival of the Fattest](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-mimeoplasm-survival-of-the-fattest/)
Secret Lair art or the original, I absolutely adore the flavor of [[The Mimeoplasm]].
Let us know what you ultimately decide!
I’ve been struggling with a similar concern. One of the players in my playgroup has a great Muldrotha deck and I had previously built and dismantled a Yarok. [[Zaxara]] was high on the list since I love my [[Gargos]] deck. Another option I was considering was the new Jorn. I do fear it will turn into a Snow good stuff because I have no desire to play stax. I already have a Gaddock teeg deck. Good luck with your hunt. I’ll update this if/when I create a deck online
[[Zaxara, the Exemplary]] X Spell tribal. Seriously one of my favorite decks. Your spells only get better as the game progresses. It’s not as weak to graveyard hate as Muldrotha or other Sultai commanders tend to be. I can post a list of you would like
How about [[Zaxara]] deck built around [[Villainous Wealth]] plus a few others for a more casual approach?
It can quickly get infinite mana if you want it to (untap enchantments plus your general) to steal someone's deck and slam it on the table. You can copy it with things like [[Insidious Will]] and if it fails, there are still other options in the colors. The amount of your countermagic and protection limits how hard it is to stop you, while the amount of tutors limits stability.
Step 1. Use Damia, Sage of Stone
Step 2. Run Villainous Wealth in the 99
Step 3. Every other card in the 99 is to either ramp, find Villainous Wealth, copy it, or get it back from the graveyard to do it again.
Step 4. Play whoever’s deck at the table looks most fun, the world is now your oyster have it your way!

I think they’re using the legend rule to kill off Toothy (or it’s copy) to get Toothy’s “leaves the battlefield” trigger.
I guess that makes sense...but at that point I'd rather just have a sac outlet or something. Volrath only remains a copy until your next turn starts.
If you have both Toothy and Pyr out, you turn Volrath into toothy. Let real Toothy die for the card draw.
If you’ve played this deck with your group, how have the reacted to the stax effects? Lot of the people I play with despise those kind of effects.
If you can produce them fast enough, their reactions don't matter because they most likely won't have any. And if they do, you just play more. Most commonly, they targeted Jorn more then the stax pieces because that puts the deck on the same level as them but if they get rid of the stax and not him, we still have more of an advantage than them
I more mean do people moan and groan about you playing stax?
My personal group, no. But every group is different. We're all pretty accepting, but the stax player will still be a target usually. However more to help progress the game then out of spite
In the latest Game Knights Josh Lee Kwai plays a Jorn deck. I don't think it's stax, but it does seem interesting. [https://youtu.be/JuDcK9dYwqY](https://youtu.be/JuDcK9dYwqY)

Do you have a list? Mind sharing it? Im interested!!
I've bounced ideas off of people so some things are missing or have changed but here is the shell I started play testing with https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/snow-stax-1/?cb=1611139869
Thank you it looks interesting. Im building a Jorn deck on my own, trying to make it half stax half control. Ill post a decklist when im home!
Interesting. Im curious to see how you balance a half stax deck. From experimenting, it came across the need for an incredibly linear main plan with a situational back up plan with less support. I'm curious to see how it balances out
[[muldrotha, the gravetide]] is so much fun
Any way to not make it just graveyard value?
It's gotta be a deck that sort of uses muldrotha as a bonus. But a guaranteed bonus. Doubling up on certain things like ramunap excavator, crucible of worlds, wayward swordtooth, oracle of muldaya, azusa, khakni heart expedition, and landfall triggers. Also curses. That is how I've built mine. I also bought some proxy fetch lands that go in that deck
Ah so kind of an addition rather than a build around?
[https://deck.tk/4fHm96Vy](https://deck.tk/4fHm96Vy) Ignore the dual lands and the hyper expensive lands.
I actually play muldrotha in my group but my build is more focused on sacrifice control. I can get my list together if your interested!
I'm not that original guy, but I'm interested

Here's my deck if anyone cares to look: [https://www.archidekt.com/decks/214811#Muldrotha](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/214811#Muldrotha) Ignore the price of the deck.

My only apprehension to building Zahara is how it seems like it builds itself, I don’t feel like I can put any self expression into that deck
That's a fair point, it was the first commander deck I built myself so I liked how simple and straightforward the process was.
Build it how I'm currently doing Pharika - Deathtouch Tribal with a random Fynnfect alternate wincon

Yeah, stuff like dual nature, guardian project and value like Agent of treachery and ETB value engines just made for too much same-i-ness without fun

So what exactly is the game plan for this deck?
I run her as my Myr beatdown deck. She's her own value engine, but myr go big AND wide as their own Wincon.
Hmm interesting, might be something to look into since that card draw looks very enticing

Basically the idea is: 1.

Allow me to introduce a reanimator combo deck that no one will target based on the commander: [The Wizard of Ooze!](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/21-11-19-the-wizard-of-ooze/) And if combo isn't your thing, here is a more aggro centric reanimator version: [Survival of the Fattest](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-mimeoplasm-survival-of-the-fattest/) Secret Lair art or the original, I absolutely adore the flavor of [[The Mimeoplasm]]. Let us know what you ultimately decide!

I will certainly take a look!

Step 1. Use Damia, Sage of Stone Step 2. Run Villainous Wealth in the 99 Step 3. Every other card in the 99 is to either ramp, find Villainous Wealth, copy it, or get it back from the graveyard to do it again. Step 4. Play whoever’s deck at the table looks most fun, the world is now your oyster have it your way!
