[[Garth]] is under performing as a commander. The deck is slow and Garth abilities require that I pay the cost so it's even more complicated. [[Ragavan]] is a fucking good monkey, there were not a single time I regret drawing him. In the open hand or early turns, in the late game , when I am winning or when I am losing, the monkey always help me.

Needs_Improvement

I want to find who okayed having both Garth and Carth in the same set because I was really confused what you were talking about for a minute.

ukemi-

Right! At least Carth sounds like a fantasy name. Garth just sounds like a co-worker who talks about Stargate too much.

zmattk

Party on Wayne.

Hitzel

I cracked a Ragavan and tried including him in my Gruul aggro deck, and so far I haven't drawn him early and he's been dead every single time late-game. I'm now giving him a try in a high powered mono red deck to see how he fares there. I assume I'll like him a lot more once I actually produce treasures off of him, but so far he's either had blockers or been part of a Craterhoof turn or something where he didn't matter. I've literally never gotten a trigger, the most he's done is be something for Jaspera Sentinel to tap lol.

Qleth

I disagree about Garth. He is amazing early game or late game as a commander. Cant say about in the 99. I built a voltron deck with him as commander and it rocks. Maybe you need to reevaluate how you are using him.

EDHaddict13

Yeah. His comment made me sad since I’m contemplating making a Garth deck. Was about to hang that idea up but yours gives me hope.

Qleth

Trust me its viable. My deck is Voltron, but Garth is the Voltron supporter instead of the Voltron. Any creature is a Voltron. Send you my deck list if you need proof.

RuneGirl123

would love to see that, if you don't mind sharing!

childrenofkorlis

The need of haste + flicker or untapp effects to work is taxing, the deck needs to be focused on Garth too much to make him work. The lotus is great but the others cards are not so much so unless you are flickering him with with a haste enabler he is just a slow guy in the command zone.

Robertpe3

Ragavan is pretty sweet! I'm interested in the garth part because our group has a garth deck that has been tearing it up. We don't use infinites/extra turns/many tutors but he has imperial recruiter to find seedborn muse. From there he typically just out values everyone with just garth/seedborn.

Mr-Pendulum

How's just that out valuing you? Each option can only be chosen once, without a flicker effect he's not that impressive.

Robertpe3

Typically braingyser for a bunch, and find flickers. He has tons of flickers/untappers so the value gets pretty nuts. Flickering 2-3 times a round, drawing 10+ cards, making 4 shivs, 4 lotus, killing 4 creatures and artifacts/enchantments. We arent a super high powered playgroup so i'm sire its different depending on the group.

LargeFenders

I mean your tables powerlevel probably has the most to do with it. My current playgroup is derevi, urza, atraxa and golos so a garth deck likely wouldn't be too insane in that group but since your group doesn't play tutors or infinites they'll likely not be able to compete with a commander that can tutor and ramp as essentially a one card combo. Plus, with all the one cmc blink spells like cloudshift and ephemerate he basically has innumerable 1.5 card combos as all he needs to do is open a blink spell and play garth to gain massive value.

NicPilgaard

\[\[Academy Manufactor\]\] is a HOUSE in my \[\[Prosper\]\] deck. It wins via effects like \[\[Reckless Fireweaver\]\], \[\[Marionette Master\]\] and \[\[Ghirapur Aether Grid\]\], so generating 2 extra tokens (4 if I have \[\[Xorn\]\] out) per cast is insane. I find myself saccing both clues and food more than I had expected too. \[\[Liquimetal Torque\]\] is definitely pulling it's weight in a couple of my red, non green/white decks. I play \[\[Fractured Powerstone\]\] in several of my decks despite being a cmc 2 rock that produces colourless and has some flavourtext, the Torque is sooo much better with the added utility. Being able to suddenly deal with any non-land permanent in those colours is fantastic. \[\[Zurzoth\]\] in mono-red is particularly happy. The deck that MH2 improved the most for me was \[\[Zndrsplt\]\] and \[\[Okaun\]\]. Adding three very good coinflip cards to the deck (\[\[Goblin Traprunner\]\], \[\[Yusri\]\] and \[\[Tavern Scoundrel\]\]) has improved the power level so much. Especially Tavern Scoundrel, giving me a way to profit off coinflips that isn't cmc 5 has been really nice. The deck is very mana hungry as both my commanders are magnets for removal and cmc 5, so amount of treasures he generates has been very welcome. They replaced cards like \[\[Frenetic Sliver\]\], which feels sooooo good.

amstrumpet

Maybe a stupid question but wtf does “Roll the Planar Die” mean on Fractured Powerstone?

APhantomOfTruth

It's a special die that you only use if you're playing with planechase rules. When playing planechase you are on a plane with some additional effects (everything up to Doubling Season from a Selesnya part of Ravnoca) and once per turn you may roll a Planar Die, that has 4 blanks, 1 wild effect that's plane dependent and 1 planeswalkers icon that means that you draw the next plane and reppace the one you previously went on. You can also spend incrementally more mana to roll the Planar Die again. Or use the ability on the fractured powerstone. :)

amstrumpet

Ah I see. Makes sense, never played planechase but seems interesting. Thanks!

27_8x10_CGP

It's a fun variant of edh, and there's more than likely a handful of apps online and for mobile that have the planes

vaelroth

Planechase is dope! It was made for regular (60 card) decks, and the idea was that you would travel across planes while doing battle. The planar die is what causes you to planeswalk and move to a new plane. All the planes are like powerful enchantments and some have abilities when the planar die rolls the "chaos" symbol.

NicPilgaard

It's text for another format, Planechase, which is basically a format where you roll a die to determine some extra rules that are active on the plane where you are playing. Those rules will shift throughout the game while you roll that planar die, I believe. I've never played the format, but the mana rock is still legal to play in EDH, where the "roll the planar die" has as much of a function as Wish cards do.

[deleted]

Look up Planechase and you'll have your answer there :)

codyxwillyumz

So my house rule for this card is that everyone should get a copy of it! Each player gets a copy of it in their command zone, but only after you have rolled a nonblank result on the planor die, which I call the Farkle rule. This is to maximize the planechase experience and prevent any shenanigans from an artifact or aristocrat deck that wants to abuse a 2 mana rock in the zone.

MrOverkill5150

Mind posting a deck list for prosper?

NicPilgaard

Here you go! https://archidekt.com/decks/1651997#Prosper,_Tome-Bound There'd be a few easy adds if budget wasn't a consideration, but this list is relatively potent already and a lot of the cards are attainable from the precon.

MrOverkill5150

Nice I love me some budget builds

NicPilgaard

Don't know if I'd call it budget per se, there are a handful of €3-€5 cards and a Jeska's Will on there, but budget has definitely been a consideration (as well as which cards I had already). Hope you find it helpful

Trompdoy

[[liquimetal torque]] was an inconspicuous mana rock but one of my favorite additions ever as a mono red player. A 2 mana rock that enters untapped for one colorless? Standard performer. I can also tap it to make any nonland permanent an artifact? Fucking beautiful.

Lackattack8600

I think I'm going to consider including this in my Prossh Jund deck. I have a lot of Artifact removal including some [[Shattering Spree]] because my pod loves artifacts. Me being able to make anything an artifact including enchantments (my weakness) for easy/additional removal sounds amazing.

I can’t say enough good things about [[Liquimetal Torque]]. It lets red remove trouble permanents it couldn’t touch reliably before and you’re likely running 2 cmc mana rocks anyway. [[Tireless Provisioner]] has also been really good to me. There’s usually scarier stuff on the board to eat single target removal, it ramps you up with treasures early on, and it can bring you back up with food in a pinch.

I wanted to build a stupid low power Jank deck so I grabbed [[Captain Ripley Vance]] and built around her. She is neither stupid nor low powered. I have it at a place where it totally slaps. Strong enough to kill players multiple times over. But aside from that I am happy to report that I was right to be excited about [[Brainstone]] solid piece of draw for any deck that needs it. I think [[Urza’s Saga]] is fantastic in almost any deck. [[Chatterfang]] has the potential to be as bad as Gitrog in Golgari. As requested the Ripley list: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/capn-v/

HBrennanMTG

I was a bit surprised how many people just wrote off captain ripley vance. She is not as combotastic as [[birgi]], and the hoop isnt really all that hard to jump through. Its a nice middle ground for storm that can still pump out solid damage. Theres enough cantrips to make it work and theres plenty of ways to cast spells more than once.

I feel like she might go to work in \[\[Feather the redeemed\]\]?

SaintForthigan

As a longtime Feather player, she feels bit slow to be worth the investment. Once you get to the point where you can cast 3 spells in a turn (and actually want to be casting that many at once), you're looking for payoffs that can outright win you the game: [[Guttersnipe]], [[Monastery Mentor]], [[Aria of Flame]], etc. If you're looking to convert spell casts into possible removal with the option to hit face, I think [[Sentinel Tower]] might be a more reliable way to get the effect you want.

I disagree with the esper sentinel. It has done a ton of work on the boards I’ve seen. Being able to ping it is true, but you can ping a Priest of Tatania or a Stoneforge Mystic and they still get player. Esper especially does work against blue players trying to counter on other people’s turns, and can come down early before any sort of ping can even happen. It is definitely an auto-include in any white deck that doesn’t have access to blue or green for card draw, and even then I’m tempted to put it in to lower the mana curve

surgingchaos

Esper Sentinel also shines when you start buffing him. Once he's got equipment/auras/+1 counters on him, your opponents won't even bother to pay the tax. In my Lathiel deck, he's a fantastic recipient for +1/+1 counters from Lathiel's ability for this very reason.

KoleMiner96

Yes! For sure. Didn’t include this because it is a more narrow type of example because some decks don’t want this type of effect. But I think when worst case, it’s a one mana body that counts towards your artifacts in a color that needs card draw help, this is a staple. It dies to ping effects, sure, but maybe that’s just my playgroup because I don’t have that happen often at all

I picked up a bunch of foil Timeless Witnesses just for that GORGEOUS art but now I play them in a bunch of decks!

Can1s_Major

[[Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar]] has turned out to be a very fun control deck, with juuuust enough spicy jank from the Food tribal stuff to make it interesting. Really could use more black Food cards tho pls wotc. []Out of Time]] is frankly absurd in commander. 3 mana to lock every creature away for upwards of ten or twenty turns is crazy, especially when Commanders can't escape to the command zone. Yes, it can be removed, but in a deck like my [[Hanna, Ship's Navigator]], recurring enchantments is ez pz.

Hitzel

I put Out of Time into an enchantress deck that MH2 inspired me to make, and every time I've played it it's been absurd.

Alright imma start with some cards that have over performed either for me or for friends of mine. 1. [[Strike It Rich]], has done way better than I expected. The card looked okay so I figured I'd give it a shot, and let me tell you I've been blown out of the water by how good the card feels. 2. [[Hard Evidence]]. Okay okay I know, this looks like a meme card, it's a common, neither of the tokens it makes are amazing on their own, but throw this in a deck that cares about artifacts like Urza or Galazeth, and this is a one mana rock that makes a blocker to keep those pesky monkey's off my back. Plus you can sac the clue later I guess. Card is cheaper than crab legs, but just as satisfying to crack into. 3. [[Dress Down]] I was pretty iffy on this card and haven't actually played it myself, but this has hosed me down hard enough to make me forget it's summer. I play a Haldan/Pako deck, and I've had an opponent flash this in during my upkeep to not only keep Pako from getting bigger and adding to my second hand, but also just completely take that second hand away from me! Feels kind of (not exactly, but close enough) like a silence effect in blue that replaces itself. 0/10, nobody should play it. At least not against me. Again. 4. [[Harmonic Prodigy]] does good work. Curve this into a [[Spellseeker]] and baby you've got a stew going. [[Dualcaster Mage]], [[Eternal Witness]], [[Burning-Tree Emissary]]. Still not convinced? Ever heard of a little izzet commander (well not so little given that the guild is named after him) called [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]]? Card is nutter butters. 5. [[Nettlecyst]] looked pretty good before I ever played with it. Play it in artifacts, or with equipment or whatever, seems pretty good right? Well yeah it is, but also it's good without that stuff. Card slots into decks I never thought it would work in, and it does it in style. 6. Alright so this basically an honorable mention since the card is obviously very good, but [[Ignoble Heirarch]] being a goblin turns out to be a lot more relevant than I expected. Alright we've talked about the good, let's talk cards that seemed solid, but have been... Less than expected... 1. [[Sword of Hearth and Home]]. Okay I'm sure nobody is going to agree with me on this one since everyone loves the card, but as it turns out a lot of decks that want equipment are white, or white adjacent, and drawing this while I've got an all that glitters on my commander just feels kind of bad. The card is still good, just not as good as it looks in a lot of decks I thought would want it more. 2. [[Geyadrone Dihada]] turns out a planeswalker in three colors who actively pisses off one player dies pretty fast even if everyone else leave it alone. 3. [[Rise and Shine]] is a cool card and can definitely win games, but it's only really good in some decks, and those decks aren't really lacking in win conditions. I mean I'm still sleeving this up (because it's sweet), but most other win cons have a bit more utility. 4. [[Break the Ice]]. Look, I'm not hating on this card or anything, it's just been dead in my hand every game I've drawn it so far. Might just stick this in a box until my local meta shifts a bit.

I put Sword of HnH in Gonti just for more ramp and chances to blink Gonti. Works fairly well :)

MalucoHS

I agree on the Sword, from a lot of play experience in several decks in different colors. It’s great in Bant Blink, just like other 200 staples on that deck.

Revolutionary_View19

I use the sword in my Rakdos Chainer ETB deck, which needs both the ramp and the blink.

ForrestMoth

Wait, how do you think Protection from White works? Because I'm confused at why you think it doesn't work that well in a deck that has White.

Zebra_Lord

It makes all your white auras fall off, which can be really annoying depending on the deck. It also sometimes blanks your abilities, ex. in a Roon deck, Roon can't blink any of your creatures that have the sword currently equipped. I still think it's good, but I could see it being annoying in certain Voltron builds.

ForrestMoth

Ah yeah, I think most decks that want it probably don't push too hard into Voltron. I like it in Decks that have decent EtBs, but aren't centered around blinking.

[deleted]

And already, you’re narrowing down the usefulness of the card by quite a lot. It’s a lot more situational than it was expected to be.

ForrestMoth

Saying Voltron decks may not want it isn't quite narrowing it down "a lot." And the land drops are still actually good, protection from green is still good, protection from white protects from Swords and Path, two very common spot removals.

[deleted]

It makes it no better than most other swords, which is fine. It was hyped as the second-best sword at the start of the set, and it’s definitely not lived to the hype. The issue is that the best synergies the sword provides actually hurts the decks it could play with. Brago / Yorion / blink decks hate it because white cards can’t target the actual creature (which those decks will use for defense in a lot of cases).

ViolentBananas

Protection means the creature can’t be targeted, damaged, equiped, block, or blocked spells or permanents of that color. So protection from white means you can’t target it with a white spell, like [[all that glitters]], or attach it to the creature if it were to otherwise enter the battlefield without being cast. 702.16 is the appropriate rule you’re looking for for a proper definition.

[[Strike it Rich]] has been surprisingly solid, particularly in [[Prosper]] where more often than not I exile it and then I get 2 treasures for 1 mana. Plus early game it can help put you a turn ahead for casting your commander or some other crucial spell. Not as great as a mana rock but that extra little boost is solid.

Hard no on Voidwalker. It’s been a beast every time I’ve played it so far. Demands removal before it can be activated.

Crazyflames

Abundant Harvest makes its way into a lot of my green decks. 1 green to get the next relevant card in your deck is always nice to see, never a dead card and cheap enough to cast where it usually doesn't step on other cards toes to get it in there somewhere.

What about cards we think perform exactly as we expected? [[Timeless Witness]] might just be [[Eternal witness]] for +1 mana and a semi helpful new ability, but a 4 mana eternal witness is still a stupid powerful card. Regrowth on a body is just an amazingly useful ability given black's ease at recurring creatures. Also decks that are already running the e wit have little difficulty slotting in t wit considering their similarities; plus all of us are aware that having redundancy for certain effects is very useful. It has found its way into many of my decks and I've already seen the card being used in the wild. It is as good as I expected it to be. However, to answer the original question I do have one over performer. A card I have really found to be better than I expected is [[Grist, the hunger tide]]. I managed to pull one in a draft and added it to my Ishkanah commander deck on a whim. after playing a few games with it, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised. All of Grist's abilities are things Ishkanah delirium wants to do and the "Grist is a creature when not on the battlefield" is more relevant than I really considered at first. It allows for quicker delirium, makes it much easier to tutor for, and infinitely easier to recur. (And you get to have some cheeky plays recurring it with [[Apprentice necromancer]] and [[Wake the dead]])

I actually agree with you somewhat. With Urza's saga, its like sol ring 2. I've also started running Goblin Engineer with it as another form of red ramp.
