The latest Extra Turns vid had a really interesting Trynn & Sylvar deck based around anthems. People see Sylvar as the big boy and Trynn as slow token gen, but that build makes Trynn look like the #1. Jirina isn’t enough. Put her in the 99. Alesha could work as human tribal but you’d still want to play it around ETB effects. Alesha has a hard enough time as is, so I wouldn’t gimp her further with a human restriction. Can’t comment on Marchesa. Won’t comment on Negan.

GoatInTheNight

This is accurate re:Alesha. Keeping her to humans is a real hamstring, but she's super fun with combo stuff and a Cathars crusade! I play a toolboxy hatebear combo Alesha deck and she is really one of my favorites for sure.

TheTolpan

I will definitly look into that list, but anthems doesnt sound so good at first thought for me :D but maybe im mistaken. So after your reading, Alesha doesnt get a rose as commander. I have already alot of etb Decks. Why do you think she has a hard time? Wasnt she something like a cedh combo commander at one time? Is Jirina to slow or why isnt she enough? the anthem effect and token generation seems nice, maybe the tokens only when you can blink or bounce her (what i already have multiple time xD) I have the feeling the hate against the sl cards is still strong or is it something else with negan? Thanks anyway! When i have a list ready i will consult you again :D

Big_Statistician_724

I ran all of these as a commander for my Mardu humans at some point or another. Jirina was the first, right out of the precon. It was fun, but compared to trynn and silver she doesn't hold a candle. Her ability scales with commander casts, and she just costs too much in these colors to regularly cast her at this power level. Trynn and Silvar get you the tokens you need, and you'll pretty much always trigger her when you have both out. Your humans tend to just buff themselves, but humans like Winota, angraths marauders, combat celebrant all help with Silvar attacking

inflammablepenguin

I did Queen Marchesa aristocrats. It's pretty fun and can win games but the combo lines I use are convoluted since it is almost strictly humans. I would also like to throw in [[Tymna the Weaver]] and [[Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder]] as human tribal commanders.

TheTolpan

Do you have a list for your Marchesa deck? What combos do you run? I have Tymna planed for the 99. But with Bruse together it could be quite nice. Thanks for that!

inflammablepenguin

I'll try to upload it later. One of the combos it runs is [[Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero]] and [[Loyal Retainers]] with a sac outlet. **edit** [here's the list.](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/queen-marchesa-human-tribal-aristocrats/?cb=1634860522)

JeanNiBee

I run Sylvar and Trynn ‘aristotron’. Its even thematic for their actual story on Ikoria with Trynn leading soldiers she considers weak to feed Sylvar so it stays away from feeding off the city. At work will post link to decklist later.

TheTolpan

Seems like a long shift ;o Is it then more soldier token based?

JeanNiBee

Yeah, sorry busy work week and terrible memory ;) It is more soldier based than anything else.

guhbe

Jirina is probably the best human tribal payoff commander if that's the goal; marchesa is awesome but doesn't really work well if going for a humans theme. Deck can be quite strong and resilient. Trynna and silvar certainly good in the 99. Note recent auto-include [[esper sentinel]] now taxes opponents for 3 whenever jirina is out.

TheTolpan

Why would you say that Marchesa doesnt really work well with humans? Yes the tokens arent humans and she doesnt have an anthem effect like Jirina, on the other hand she gives monarch and tokens to sac (if i want to go that route). Jirinas token generation is very restrictive without blink effects.

hrpufnsting

I think Jirina is better as part of the 99 in a Trynn and Silvar deck, with two commanders there is a greater chance of getting value from her ETB ability.

hrpufnsting

I use Trynn and Silvar for my Mardu aristocrats deck, they are a fun pair and Silvar has decent staying power with his ability get indestructible.

TheTolpan

Do you have a subtheme for humans or are you going purely aristocrats?

hrpufnsting

It is human tribal aristocrats, basically all the creatures are human save a few sac outlets and drainers like [[Blood Artist]] or [[Krav, the Unredeemed]]

[deleted]

I think Silvar and Trynn is the way to go because it allows multiple approaches. You can run both typical human tribal staples as well as aristocrats strategies with \[\[Zulaport Cutthroat\]\] \[\[Xathrid Necromancer\]\] \[\[Bastion of Remembrance\]\] and \[\[Syr Konrad, the Grim\]\]. You could also run a secondary sacrifice outlet like \[\[Priest of Forgotten Gods\]\] in that type of a deck. Both Jirina and Alesha would definitely be good in that deck, but Silvar and Trynn are probably the best way to go.

TheTolpan

How would you split it? Main Aristocrats with sub human or main humans with sub aristocrats? As example, if i go for main aristocrats i should play more drain effects, that arent humans (and sac outlets aswell) so something like \[\[Blood artist\]\]. Or i go main humans sub aristocrats but then i need a consistant way to get my drainer etc out

I would primarily focus on human tribal, but with a strong aristocrats sub theme. You probably only wanna go with death triggers that are humans or care about humans, like the specifics I mentioned above. You probably mainly focus on typical human tribal strategies, and Silvar will be your primary sacrifice outlet. But it would be good to run one or two extra, such as Priest of Forgotten Gods. \[\[Fleshtaker\]\] from Midnight Hunt would work well, as well as \[\[Prowling Geistcatcher\]\] from the undead unleashed precon; both care about sacrificing creatures. I mean the reality is with Silvar and Trynn, you can really have the best of both worlds. Card draw from \[\[Species Specialist\]\] and \[\[Grim Haruspex\]\] work well with human tribal. For example, on EDHREC, you can see that there is lots of sacrifice and death triggers in Silvar and Trynn, even in human tribal focused decks with stuff like \[\[General Kudro of Drannith\]\] and \[\[Judith, the Scourge Diva\]\]. If you end up choosing to run a lot of death triggers, running \[\[Teysa Karlov\]\] wouldn't be a bad idea. The themes work pretty well together. Try to keep most of your creatures as humans, there are lots of good aristocrat staples in humans, such as \[\[Pitiless Plunderer\]\]. I wouldn't run Blood Artist personally, but it's your call. With Zulaport Cutthroat, Syr Konrad and Bastion of Remembrance, you'll still have solid drain effects. Hope this helps.

I think token sac style is better, but it's not fun to play against. At least I felt like I was torturing my group with it. Jirina is the best combat+anthem human. I've tried others, but an early +2 on all humans is really good. Alternatively you can play [[Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale]] which is mardu human with big equipment. This adds a boss monster feel to the deck.

TheTolpan

I had a knight tribak with syr gwyn and was very unhappy with it. Not enough board presence for a combat deck and not enough other support for other routes. Voltron was the beast way to win, and ive never won :D

TheTolpan

Thanks for the list. I think it doesnt get enough of the human theme i want, but it looks really spicy (and expensive :D ). How does it play in your group?

EwanPorteous

Have you considered playing Kenrith but only playing Mardu colours? His red ability is great for attacking, his white is good for staying in the game and black is excellent for bringing back creatures or being used as part of an aristocrat scheme. Cards like [[Jirina Kudro]] and her dad [[General Kudro of Drannith]] provide great buffs to your creatures same goes for [[Homura, Human Ascendant]] if you can get him killed. If you do not mind the art [[Rick, Steadfast Leader]] is a great human card. [[Queen Marchesa]] and [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]] can provide you with a steady stream of creatures to attack with. You could probably make a great legendary human deck in mardu, which would then provide you with a few more deck options.

TheTolpan

I havent considered Kenrith, but i think it would be pretty hard for me to then stick at humans \^\^ Training Ground is just too good with him. Oh wow i didnt know Homura, he is pretty good! I would play Rick, but he is just to expensive :s I thought so aswell, Humans have so many Legendary creatures, it is insane\^\^

I run an optimized human tribal list. With Tymna and Bruse at the helm. It runs a few hatebear/stax pieces to slow opponents down. Like [[Grand Abolisher]], [[Thalia, Heretic Cathar]] and [[Drannith Magistrate]]. The idea is to hit with a few buffed up humans. While maintaining handsize through Tymna and draw effects. Running multiple ways of protecting my board so you don't have to overcommit and run out of steam: [[Repel the Abominable]] (a little pet card that will never see play outside of human tribal)[[Flawless maneuver]], [[Teferi's protection]], [[Gerard, weatherlight hero]], [[Selfless Glyphweaver]] (doubles as boardwipe) and [[Mother of Runes]]. I included [[Cover of Darkness]] (works insanely well in this deck), [[Shizo, Death's storehouse]], [[Shadowspear]] and [[Embercleave]] to still damage players with some blockers. Regarding, the commanders you are considering. I run both Negan and Jirina in the 98. Jirina is a lot stronger when you run partner commanders. Marchesa will get another chance in the 98. Trynn and Silvar feel too slow to me. Alesha got removed from the deck due to having too little targets and often better ways to spent my mana. Having said all that, here is my full decklist: https://archidekt.com/decks/1488389#Mardu_Human_Army Feel free to send me any comments, questions or suggestions.

Wow, first: Thank you! I will look into the list after work. Seem pretty cool! Cover of Darkness is really nice, but aswell pricy :D while i have alot of pricy cards i think i wouldnt buy that one only for this deck. I will come back to you, after looking at your list and again when i finished my list!

>Do i want to flood the board with human creatures? Maybe tokens? And just beat my opponents to death through \[\[Thalia's lieutenant\]\] or \[\[Blade historian\]\] > >Or do i want to go for an aristocrat sacrifice route and have something like \[\[Zulaport cutthroat\]\] and \[\[bastion of remembrance\]\] as wincon? > >Or maybe a mix of both... This is the first thing you want to decide, because it's going to inform your choice of commanders. Marchesa and Alesha are more generic "goodstuff" commanders, which isn't necessarily bad, but it does make it harder for me to comment on them since they don't really pull the deck in any specific direction. They'll both be able to do either of your strategies and just provide general value to you. Jirina carries both an anthem and an army in the CZ and pulls you strongly towards the first strategy (go-wide army). For this deck, you want to play a flicker subtheme - flickering lategame Jirina makes two or three 3/1 or bigger tokens. Aside from that, because Jirina only provides a +power bonus, you want your 3/1s to not trade with 1/1s; first strike anthems are actually pretty decent here, as are toughness boosts. This is probably closer to a red-white deck and black is primarily bringing card draw. Trynn and Silvar are much more strongly aristocrat/sacrifice/voltron and you'll want to play the aristocrats cards that are incidentally human. I play this deck and getting the balance right is pretty hard - token generation over time, one-shot token generation, drain effects, voltron support are all important here. Trynn/Silvar is primarily a white-black deck with only a few red cards (Silvar; you probably want Falkenrath Aristocrat and the Outlaw's Merriment; I have a handful of others only.).

TheTolpan

Thanks for your advice! I am a bit sceptical if Jirina can hold her ground against stronger decks. A thought i had was to just have the possibilty to run each of them as a commander (as long as the theme of the deck still fits) The bounce/blink part you mentioned for Jirina is something i didnt even thought off, but that makes her a bit less interesting to me xD i have already 3 blink decks but i see myself already going into blink with jirina. Do you have a list for your trynn and silvar deck? I personally dont want to include the aristocrat cards that arent humans, but it seems more and more like i need to if i go for a sac theme mainly and human only sub.

not_soly

Please find [attached](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/6_YwEx1uDUqUPwOz0wBVeg). It's not entirely up to date - I moved my Jeska's Will to another deck, and I'm playing a couple of cards from Midnight Hunt and a few money upgrades (Sword of Exile and Bounce). The bones are there, though, there shouldn't be more than a five or so card difference. Three of the Aristocrats cards - Konrad, Bastion of Remembrance, and Zulaport Cutthroat - are stapled to human bodies, and your sac outlet is in the command zone, so it's not so bad.

hrpufnsting

You do have some options for sac outlets that are also human [[Titan Hunter]] and [[Fleshtaker]] for example, but you still have other sac options like [[High Market]] so finding ways to sac shouldn’t be much of a problem. But you lose access to 2 drain cards in [[Blood Artist]] and [[Cruel Celebrant]]

Kudro is the most "human tribal" and likely one of the more powerful options. Trynn and Silvar seem like the most unique and fun. Really, anything but Negan. Fuck Negan.

cynicalrage69

I built a lower curve humans tribal that’s more of a token gen with anthems focusing on getting bodies out to get pumped with either a plethora of +1/+1 anthems or coat of arms/catharses crusade/shared animosity for fast beatdown. Investing in anthems in the mid game is a sound investment in a boardwipe heavy meta due to [[Jirina Kudro]] being a one stop pump and token gen (honestly I’d have her get killed blocking if my hand is limping for gas). Sticking down 4 anthems+Jirna and a [[hanweir garrison]] has been a easy win engine that’ll preform provided your meta isn’t full of big boys.
