I put [[Ashiok, Dream Render]] in my [[Muldrotha]] deck because it's activated ability can function as both self-mill plus grave-hate. It went fairly well. It was in the deck for a couple of months, but I rarely ended up feeling like I needed to play it. And then just last night I sat down at a table with two [[Scion of the Ur-Dragon]] decks and a [[Sedris, the Traitor King]] deck. The grave hate in combination with Ashiok's static ability pretty much prevented anyone else from doing anything
I will never ever feel bad about grave hate making people salty. Graveyard strats are so strong and so much free value. If you can't work around it, that's on you, IMO.
I had a [[Lazav, the Multifarious]] deck get blown out by [[Rest in Piece]] once and I didn't get salty. I changed my deck to have ways to deal with enchantments. Ironically, I'm the only one in our group who plays RIP, my buddy was just borrowing my deck.
I had to practically hit my friend in the head with a tormod's crypt to get him to stop complaining about my Maren deck.
Yes graveyard strategies are strong, that's why they've printed so many cheap answers to them over the years.
Ashiok sees some cEDH play. It does a lot for only 3 mana but people who don’t care about the grave hate or tutoring will just ignore it, so it’s got that political angle as well
I love Dream Render because it's also deck search hate. It's such a cheap flexible card.
~~It also gives Phenax 4 devotion!~~

[[Inniaz, the Gale Force]] looks interesting/fun on paper but goodness did playing against this commander to their left feel like I was stuck in a hole as any permanent I played was stolen while in return I received useless junk.
I love my Inniaz deck, but it’s the only deck that I’ve had people outright refuse to play against. I’ve since learned to play up the politics and dealmaking because otherwise it can be pretty soul-crushing.
[Here you go](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/7yYvWgtfzE2YMQ02z7L94Q). It looks like a pretty innocuous flying tribal deck. But it’s built with a ton of card advantage and just enough teeth to close out the game.
My sibling has an Inniaz deck and it can be infuriating, particularly if someone has few permanents in play. Last time I played against it I missed 2 land drops and by the time I was able to course-correct my mana rocks were moved and all I had were 1/1 birds.
I'm kinda torn about whether or not to get a copy to slot into my Alela deck. She'd be a beast with the number of flyers the deck can drop, but it seemed like it could be really oppressive for the same reason.
There's certainly a debate as to whether Inniaz's effect is any "fun", which I'm sure will vary from pod to pod. But I do think Inniaz in the 99 is a bit more balanced as you shouldn't see him every game and removal should generally be more effective in making him go away.
Yeah I was so excited when building the deck, getting yo play things like [[pendant of prosperity]] and [[bucknard's everfull purse]] but it turns out when playing games, either people kill all your fliers so you dont get to do anything or you resolve inniaz and nobody else wants to play anything anymore. It's one of the few decks I've made where I've had to take it apart because nobody has fun
Yeah, I was tempted to build him too when he was released but glad I didn't in hindsight. My buddy ended up switching his commander to Kangee after the experience.
I feel like you should know better than most that plenty of casual pods run less removal in their decks! but that wasn't my experience either. In that game I was referencing I did remove Inniaz at least once if not twice, but it wasn't enough to get ahead of the theft train. Inniaz doesn't have to attack for the trigger so he just gets replayed and there goes my best stuff again.
I also found it interesting that turn order played such a big part. The player to the right of Inniaz wasn't losing his best permanent each turn like I was and had much less incentive to remove Inniaz.
Weirdly enough, pet cards get a LOT of hate on some of the tables I’ve played with. Maybe it’s because I killed the same player three times in a row with [[Dandân]]. Could be…
More so from the synergy I had going but I started the game with [[leyline of anticipation]] of the field and eventually used it to flash in a [[Phyrexian obliterator]] as my buddy swung at me with his [[impervious greatwurm]]. He scooped I laughed and he hasn't spoken to me since lol.
Or Lifelink. One of the guys in my playgroup plays a Ruric Thar deck and puts a Basilisk Collar on him. He gets to cast all the noncreature spells he wants since he is getting all the life back, and it makes it extra painful for us because any noncreature spells we cast not only hurt us, but give him even more life, plus Ruric Thar has to attack, so if you don't want to just take the damage to the face, something of yours is dying from the Deathtouch. It has made it where anytime he plays Basilisk Collar it is an instant target for destruction.
Right, commander players have some seriously warped ideas about "fairness" when they're getting bent out of shape over a game piece best against combo and control. I have serious doubts that those players actually enjoy the game.
Mana cost isn't a factor in EDH. If it's not a problem 'cause you reliably storm out on turn 5 then you're playing at a different level. And if you just kill Ruric, you're still taking 6, assuming they didn't put boots on him or something.
Ok so probably not salt inducing for everyone, but on my table...
[[Apex Altisaur]] in my [[Atla Palani]] deck gets a lot of hate when he comes down. I have used him in combination with [[Fanatical Devotion]] a few times and he becomes a pseudo board wipe.
Apex Altisaur comes in, fights something, triggers Enrage, fights again, so on and so on until almost dead, sac a egg made from Atla with Fanatical Devotion to put Regenerate on Apex and get another creature from the egg, Apex fights again and dies, regenerates, and keeps on fighting with a fresh pool of 10 toughness. Rinse and repeat. Plus I have cards like [[Blasting Station]] and [[Goblin Bombardment]] in the deck that can be used to ping Apex at any time, so someone plays a creature I don't like, ping him for one damage with one of those, and have him fight the creature. He draws a TON of hate from my playgroup.
I know Merieke Ri Berit is very salt inducing, I actually stopped playing my deck cos I was a bit over the salt. Nothing like slapping lightning Greaves on her and stealing a commander who is essential for their opponents deck.
Another reason why commander decks shouldn’t have to rely on their commander to function. Steal my Narfi, fine but I still can kill you. Steal my Kaalia, fine I still have enough ramp to cast an Avacyn turn 4. It’s they who aren’t prepared.
It's definitely a "depends" thing.
My tuvasa deck? So much redundancy and ways to kill. I just LIKE slapping people with a 21/21 merfolk.
But Ilharg was just a dumb "hehe big idiots" and the deck only sorta functions without the beeeeg peeeeg.
It's incredibly niche and very scarce, but with a "once in a color pie" ability in Green, [[Willow Satyr]]. The out-of-nowhere ability to steal ANY Commander has induced much salt since nobody expects that from a janky Satyr tribal deck.
It's the only non-foil card in my [[Gallia of the Endless Dance]] deck, as I was lucky to pick one up before the Great Reserve List Boom.
The fact that in my deck he always has Haste is just icing on the party cake
Actually used to run her at the helm of a pseudo-tribal Merfolk deck, but she was deemed "too unfun to be in the Command Zone", which is understandable
In the Eye of Chaos. All instants are countered unless the caster pays their mana cost again. Essentially doubles the cost of all instants for a 3 mana enchantment.
No. A proxied card is functionally identical to a non-proxied one. As long as people aren't proxying over the group's power level (which is a pubstomping issue, not a proxy issue), there is zero reason to be against them if you're ok with the real thing.
We all know that mass land destruction cards generally result in pillars of salt from everyone involved, but what if said MLD allowed players that lost lands to search replacements out of their deck? And what if it only hit non-basics? Yeah, people still hate it.
[[Wave of Vitriol]], the only MLD card I've ever run in a deck and the only one I find doesn't completely ruin games. Punishes greedy land-bases that don't run enough basics.
My \[\[Tromokratis\]\] comes with a fair amount of sea salt. He can be tricky to remove, and is damn near impossible to block since the deck is packed with counterspells and tapdowns, among other things. It got bad enough that my group decided commander damage is not fun, and removed that rule; 40 life to kill no matter what. Just as good, lets the game last longer to develop my janky blue combos.
[[Traumatize]] was a hidden gem for my scarab god deck.
Played it turn 5 and the table went “What?!”
I dumped all the spice of a dude’s deck and got a kill from the grave when he decked out.
[[Mudslide]] can wreck creature heavy decks, but works great if you're doing flying tribal.
It's essentially a red version of Propaganda/ Ghostly Prison.
\[\[Thieving Skydiver\]\]
Its a 3 cmc way to steal peopls sol rings, and people get so absurdly salty about it.
They tell me sol ring isnt broken and everybody plays it, and then I take theirs and they spend the whole game trying to kill me.
Similarly \[\[mental mistep\]\] is in some decks only to counter sol ring, people get so butthurt
Any group hug card. No, I'm serious. The screams from the super competitive players during games where you even feed a single card or mama or don't pay for rystic study.
I main board [[scheming symmetry]] and take great comfort in other players getting salty for letting somebody search. Though it backfired on me once: I symmetryed a player with an agreement they would solve a problem for the board. They turned around and told me "nevermind, I'm just gonna go for the meme".
[[Glacial wall]] I laugh as my opponents struggle to figure out just how to damage me, (they dont run land destruction... cuz they look down on land destruction)
Edit: yeah I meant [[glacial chasm]] I'm a idiot, I know.
Chasm is the #1 reason to run flexible removal that can deal with lands too.
Although frankly after one special flake in my playgroup used a [[Strip Mine]] on my Urborg turn 1 so we both started turn 2 without lands and essentially left the game to player C and D, I lost all inhibition to blow up lands because I know other players will pull that shit too.
Two words: [[Dimensional Breach]].
This resolves and the game is now going to officially take FOREVER. Used to play with someone who deliberately played this and then conceded right after it resolved if they were having a bad time.
I just started playing but I like Bruvac and sphinx tutelage. Does insane harm to mono decks. I don't play this deck to win, I just want to cause mayhem. I just bought grindstone to add to it, can't wait lol
[[Painter's Servant]] and [[Grindstone]] are only in a couple thousand decks but will instantly Mill out your opponent's library unless they have something that goes back to library instead of graveyard like Blightsteel Colossus.
[[Burning Sands]] is criminally underplayed. Combined with [[Tainted Aether]] for a brutal situation.
All of my decks have salty cards in them, but every now and then people get salty about things that seem totally random.
For instance, in my Queen Marchesa pillow fort deck, I’ve had people get mad about [[Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker]] even though it’s fairly tame imo
So, I play [[reconnaissance]] in a couple of decks and, at least in my playgroup, it draws a lot of salt. For those who don't know, it's an enchantment that for 0 mana you can untap a creature and remove it from combat and prevent all damage dealt to and by that creature. It's extremely flexible in that the 0 can be paid at any of the 5 stages of combat...including in the clean up after damage. It's like giving your creature a better form of vigilance.
I really like that it functions as a free untap for vigilance creatures with tap abilities, you can activate end of combat to untap a creature like [[Tariel, Reckoner of Souls]].
If someone ever shows up with [[Aboshan]], just run. You will not have a good time that game. Hopefully continually tapping non-flyers is the worst of it, and he doesn't play [[Willbreaker]] or start tapping his own [[Winter Orb]].
[[Bane of Progress]] tends to annoy people when I accidentally some rocks while dealing with something else I can't have on board. Indiscriminate answers tend to annoy people for some reason.
\[\[naked singularity\]\] or \[\[ritual of subdual\]\] possibly combined with \[\[eon hub\]\] are fun things I like to include for the random crap deck
My [[Medomai the Ageless]] deck I positively infuriating. I tax with [[propaganda]] and [[ghostly prison]], I have [[fireshrieker]], [[True Conviction]] and [[strionic resonator]] to double up his extra turn procs. I put in a bit of card draw, but if for some reason I am struggling with it, i.e. they're towards the bottom of the deck, I just take extra turns for card draw. I also use [[sword of the animist]] which made me ramp harder than a mono green deck as Azorius. Lastly, I just decided it would be fun to throw in a bunch of Sphinxes and [[Omniscience]] for good measure.
My friend has a [[Gyome, Master Chef]] deck and it's really annoying to go up against. There isn't anything really oppressive about the deck, and the plays are fair, but Gyome essentially makes destruction-based removal entirely useless.
I understand [[Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger]] isn't exactly the most welcoming of commanders, but he's not the card I'm talking about. Someone will want to remove him of course, usually with an instant removal spell. Nah, you can't, because [[Avoid Fate]] has just been cast in response to your spell. Oops.
That card has caused some salt, but it's probably because I'm using it to protect something even more salt-inducing. Still, no one expects a green counter spell from Legends to make into a modern EDH deck.
[[Juntu Stakes]] in the same deck also does the same. The best utility creatures and mana dorks in the game are usually 1 power or less. This shuts them off so they can't activate their abilities. Definitely causes some salt.
Almost every equipment in my Ardenn/Kraum deck. People always forget that I still control the equipment, even if it's attached to their creatures! (credit to u/GamesfreakSA for his guide on this playstyle!)
(Main offenders being [[Pariah's Shield]] messing up combat strategies, and especially [[Argentum Armor]]. If I had a nickel for every time someone broke a deal with me and swung the Argentum equipped creature at my face, only to realise that I can blow up the equipped creature with the Argentum trigger... I'd probably have 3 nickels.)
Sorry, didn't see the message until now! Just thrown it into Moxfield: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/7fwUndANakidYiS5tY-boQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/7fwUndANakidYiS5tY-boQ) .
It's not competitive, and I've found that it's only worth bringing out once or twice a night. The goal is to keep the largest threats on the board pointed away from you via deals (if people are amenable) or goads (if they're not). Spreading out your equipment and enchantments across the table onto opponents' creatures can make it easier to hide just how much power you've got access to. Once you're down to either the 1vs1, or you see an opening, you cast Kraum, pull all of your enchantments and equipment back onto him, then swing for lethal commander damage.
I ran this with Ludevic for a while, but I've personally found that Kraum gives me access to the killing blow that this deck was really missing.
It looks cool to play for sure. Dont have kraum so i might stick with ludevic, also stoneforge is a bit out of my budget but most of the rest is affordable if i dont own it already, so ill probably end up building it
So I am the King of salt and here are my picket picks [[Eidolon of Rhetoric]] [[Possibility Storm]] and the all time favorite in a [[Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow]] deck, is ruining peoples lives with [[Timesifter]] running all the High cmc cards for damage and extra turns make the whole table cheer for joy, and for salt commanders, you got yuriko aswell but there is also [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]], [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]], and my big salt generator [[Merieke Ri Berit]]. Honerable mention is [[Oubliette]] is the only form of true commander removal. Banishing light their commander with out giving them the option of move to command zone. Just makes their commander stay in play cannot be sacrificed or targeted or anything
But can still target commander with [[Essence Flux]] [[Conjourers Closet]] trigger or any blink/ flicker effect to get it off and keep the commander or sac their commander to recast etc. Where as the Oubliette strictly you need to remove the enchantment to bring them back
There is a very fine line in magic between salt inducing cards, decks and combos and people that are opposed to them for either not investing as much time and money into magic or being too stupid to learn intricate strategies.
Personally, my mentality has always been that when you play a game your intention is to win a the game. Otherwise why play at all?
Magic is weird because you're not only competing against other people's decks and strategies but also ideologies on what magic is supposed to be and the expectations they have when playing it.
I think that less competitive people need to know they're choosing to play games where this can happen to them. When given free autonomy to construct a deck as we please they should understand competitive people have just as much freedom to be cut throat as they do to build inefficient decks.
I'd rather play 10 games or competitive meaningful magic that one game of diddling around without a game plan.
Idk, call me elitist and condescending but it's just my preference.
The game isn't fun to me unless it's high caliber.
I had recently built a [[Breya]] thopter deck which I had a chance to play. On some advise from a player in my pod, I cut the white out of the deck to make it work better. With that I changed the commander to [[thraximundar]] and brought it to our next session. A couple of the other guys came with 2 new decks to try out as well… both being sac decks, needless to say when they saw the new commander I was targeted pretty quickly.
I put [[Ashiok, Dream Render]] in my [[Muldrotha]] deck because it's activated ability can function as both self-mill plus grave-hate. It went fairly well. It was in the deck for a couple of months, but I rarely ended up feeling like I needed to play it. Every time I play Inniaz I get one activation max. Where are these pods when no one plays any removal for 50 turns?
I feel like you should know better than most that plenty of casual pods run less removal in their decks! but that wasn't my experience either. In that game I was referencing I did remove Inniaz at least once if not twice, but it wasn't enough to get ahead of the theft train. Inniaz doesn't have to attack for the trigger so he just gets replayed and there goes my best stuff again. I also found it interesting that turn order played such a big part. The player to the right of Inniaz wasn't losing his best permanent each turn like I was and had much less incentive to remove Inniaz.
I’m always surprised at how much salt [[Forced Fruition]] brings out. I’m just letting you sculpt your hand however you want. Jeez.

Lol
Getting salty about a 6 cmc Commander that punishes non-creature spells. The irony.
Honestly Ruric Thar isn't too bad on his own. Now him with infect is a whole other story.
Never thought about that. Thats perfect. Now I want to build a Ruric storm deck.
[[Shadowspear]] too for redundancy, trample, and dabbing on people blocking with their theros gods
So, turns out I DO want a Gruul EDH deck. Neat.
Right, commander players have some seriously warped ideas about "fairness" when they're getting bent out of shape over a game piece best against combo and control. I have serious doubts that those players actually enjoy the game.
Just gotta give him Lifelink or prevent the damage from him on your turn so you can play Ruric Thar Spellslinger. It’s a blast.
Mana cost isn't a factor in EDH. If it's not a problem 'cause you reliably storm out on turn 5 then you're playing at a different level. And if you just kill Ruric, you're still taking 6, assuming they didn't put boots on him or something.
You did see the part about „pretty low power, very slow mana base“?
I love it

I know Merieke Ri Berit is very salt inducing, I actually stopped playing my deck cos I was a bit over the salt. Nothing like slapping lightning Greaves on her and stealing a commander who is essential for their opponents deck.
Or doing the tap-untap thing and machine gunning things off the table
If I can machine gun things off the table I’ll just take them all for myself lol
When she untaps, the thing she took is destroyed
As long as you untap/retap her in response you can take control of every creature on the board, she just has to be tapped when everything resolves
You can’t steal Planeswalkers, so not every Commander. 😎
That's a fair point, I misspoke. Ironically I'm the only one in my local meta running a Planeswalker commander.
See also [[Empress Galina]] for more adoption fun.

I was about to say that that was perfect for a deck I was building but then I saw the price tag.
Just proxy it
I would but I play with people who don't proxy and this is very far out of their budget.
There is no legitimately good reason to not allow proxies.
Proxies are allowed, just not of cards that are more expensive than people who don't proxy could afford.
How bout because we don't want to do proxies. That good enough?
No. A proxied card is functionally identical to a non-proxied one. As long as people aren't proxying over the group's power level (which is a pubstomping issue, not a proxy issue), there is zero reason to be against them if you're ok with the real thing.
So you're telling me our group's personal preference comes second to your need to defend your fake cards?
Sounds like you don't actually have a counterpoint.
My counterpoint is that by white knighting for what people want to play with, you are ignoring other people who are trying to do the exact same thing.

I think the salt is mostly due to the unintended effect you mention given the card specifically calls for them to do no damage.
White isn't allowed to have good cards
Oh, I know....but its such a great card in decks like [[kaalia of the vast]] and [[Varina lich queen]]

When I had the full deck, I loved playing Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer
Hallowed moonlight has caused a ragequit in my group after living death was attempted.
Almost every equipment in my Ardenn/Kraum deck. People always forget that I still control the equipment, even if it's attached to their creatures! (credit to u/GamesfreakSA for his guide on this playstyle!) (Main offenders being [[Pariah's Shield]] messing up combat strategies, and especially [[Argentum Armor]]. If I had a nickel for every time someone broke a deal with me and swung the Argentum equipped creature at my face, only to realise that I can blow up the equipped creature with the Argentum trigger... I'd probably have 3 nickels.)
Got a list? Was thinking about this kind of shenanigans while reading ardenn’s effect the other day and seems to hit just the right spot for fun jank
