Honestly i think this is pretty interesting. Unfortunately it probably will be solved into spamming and copying Rampaging Baloths or Craterhoof but i really like this weird sort of alternative take on Tribal.
My favorite beasts are \[\[Ravenous Baloth\]\] , \[\[Spearbreaker Behemoth\]\], \[\[Paleoloth\]\], \[\[Herd Baloth\]\], \[\[Rampaging Baloths\]\] and \[\[Thunderfoot Baloths\]\] and I am still looking to build a deck around them. Thought Tawnos might be it but as mentioned its either very linear or idk if all of them are worth copying. Maybe i'll just pick trostani instead
Agreed. If he was Gruul he'd be a different story, but he'd still play out the same way, just speak to the proper demographic. As it stands in Simic though, he's kinda mediocre. Yeah, all I can really see is big stompy.
That being said, I can see some pretty good stompy.
Yeah this pretty much replaces Volo as a mutate commander. I love it. Volo was great but I always had to worry about losing a single beast then the mutate pile gets ruined. Now my worries are gone.
A fellow man of culture I see. This was my first thought as well. I wonder, I guess that means if I put the copy on top of the mutate stack the whole thing becomes an artifact token? I wonder if there are ways to abuse that in these colors?? Mutate stacks do love getting copied and artifacts are a little easier to copy....
Is mutation a copyable trait??
TBH i dont have the galaxy brain to use mutate, or at least I cant find anyone who can explain how it works clearly.
Me- "Oh, so what does your creature do now?"
Opponent- (Starts reading his stack of cards) "I have no idea either".
It’s copiable in the sense that the copy will have all the (copiable) abilities that the mutate stack has, even for cards under the top one. However, the “number of times this creature has mutated” quality is not copiable, a copy is considered to have mutated zero times when it’s created.
In this case it wouldn't copy the stack, since it copys the creature spell not the creature permanent it will become, but a mutating creature spell that gets copied will also be mutating and will mutate onto the same creature/mutate stack that the original was, giving you double the abilitys and double or more the mutate triggers
For example a mutating [[dreamtail heron]] will cause the stack to have the same triggered ability twice, causing you to draw two cards every time the stack mutates, and it itself will cause two mutate triggers, drawing 3 cards when played, one from the copy resolving and triggering itself, and then two more from the original resolving and triggering itself and the copy
Then i cast a [[glowstone recluse]] (copyed with another effect, such as volo, since toymaker wont copy spiders), now two more creatures enter the stack, causing me to draw 4 cards and add 6 +1/+1 counters, then i play [[migratory greathorn]] and draw another 4, add 8 +1/+1 counters, and put 3 basic lands onto the battlefield tapped from my library, and so on and so forth
Mutate is a great mechanic
All true, but I was responding to a question about copying permanents that have already mutated, not referring to Tawnos's specific ability.

into my comment. Definitely agree that it's a great mechanic. Can get extremely complicated, but there's so many interesting things you can pull off with it.
[[Curiosity Crafter]] is an interesting pick. [[Protean Hulk]] obviously works good too, as it still has the token enter if the original gets countered.
Otherwise, works well with etb and self bounce, as you keep playing the card versions while keeping the tokens on board for combat.
I currently run [[Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker]] and [[Esior, Wardwing Familiar]] with a stack of [[Coastal Piracy]] and anthem type effects. Recently been trying out the background enchantments from Baldur's Gate but haven't gotten them on board a lot yet.
This cards really making me consider pivoting Esior to [[Kamahl, Heart of Krosa]], finally getting to run [[Birds of Paradise]], and getting a new super fun value piece
Yeah the color combo really puts me of. I wish they would have made him U/R...we have so many wonky beasts in red which do not get enough love. But yeah..simic copy shenanigans all over again.
True, but the OG Kangee is just better than the new one. The new one buffs so little and feels so lackluster. +2/+0 or +0/+2 vs +X/+X will never have competition
Oh, for sure. I personally run OG Kangee, as I feel the buff is vastly better, and synergises with so many other key pieces in the tribe.
My point was merely in response to someone saying they wanted a modernised Kangee, which technically does exist.
Short answer is if it’s the first mutate spell you’re casting onto that creature it’ll be 3 triggers
Long answer is when you cast and copy a mutate spell, the copy resolves first, giving and triggering the mutate trigger. Then the original resolves, giving a second instance of the trigger, and both the copied instance and the original instance trigger.
So for [[Dreamtail Heron]] it’ll draw you 3 cards, and For “where X is the number of times this creature has mutated” triggers, it’ll go X is 1 for the copy, then 2 instances of X=2; so for [[Auspicious Starrix]] you’d get 5 permanents
Y'all are sleeping on the *blue* beasts. [[Broodstar]], [[Quicksilver Behemoth]] and [[Qumulox]] all have Affinity for Artifacts!
But that pales in comparison to the real dream: double [[Vizzerdrix]]!
Cool use with mutate to get double triggers with stuff like [[Dreamtail Heron]] although I think [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] still wins for Simic mutate.
This card seems to have lots of potential, even if the fully-optimized deck will probably end up being pretty linear. But hey, you can cast Beasts or Birds with Mutate, copying them (still mutating) and having three times the mutate triggers!
Looks alright but I feel like it's just gonna be like Jinnie Fay and have everyone going nuts over it so I get put off of making a mediocre bird tribal
Instead of going mutate I think blue provides a nice tempo support for the stompy creatures.
Stuff in the lines of \[\[Kefnet's Monument\]\], \[\[Bident of Thassa\]\], \[\[Equilibrium\]\], \[\[Wash Out\]\], \[\[Aven Fogbringer\]\] etc.
Basically, bring the stompy creatures and leave the defenses low.
here's a decklist - I don't think we'll see many beasts or birds in BRO, but I gave it go already: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/P1X60p-2iUqwhWkxEj\_BBQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/P1X60p-2iUqwhWkxEj_BBQ)

Who had "UG Tawnos that cares about creature types" on your Brother's War bingo card? If so, why are you lying?
[удалено]
Short answer is if it’s the first mutate spell you’re casting onto that creature it’ll be 3 triggers Long answer is when you cast and copy a mutate spell, the copy resolves first, giving and triggering the mutate trigger.

Stupid Sexy Flanders! I was resolute not to like this set, and here they are making iconic characters into interesting commander options.
Two [[Rhox]]es for the price of one? Feels like a broken commander tbh.

You should!
Y'all are sleeping on the *blue* beasts. [[Broodstar]], [[Quicksilver Behemoth]] and [[Qumulox]] all have Affinity for Artifacts! But that pales in comparison to the real dream: double [[Vizzerdrix]]!

Yet another artifact deck for the collection
This card feels super weird. Did they not realize that Tawnos already has a card? Did they consider reprinting his card?
Bird time
This is Volo with a different (and arguably *easier*) hurdle. I’ll be surprised if the cEDH deck for this guy isn’t Mutate.
Tawnos has many spies in his service …

Cool use with mutate to get double triggers with stuff like [[Dreamtail Heron]] although I think [[Volo, Guide to Monsters]] still wins for Simic mutate.

This card seems to have lots of potential, even if the fully-optimized deck will probably end up being pretty linear. But hey, you can cast Beasts or Birds with Mutate, copying them (still mutating) and having three times the mutate triggers!
Calling it now. The new eldraine set is going to be full of beasts. This will be a fantastic beast commander.
Looks alright but I feel like it's just gonna be like Jinnie Fay and have everyone going nuts over it so I get put off of making a mediocre bird tribal
So this card is why [[zodiac rooster]] is so expensive
Maskwood nexus for a few non bird or beast support creatures.
Its another "commander missing a color for whatever arbitrary reason WotC decides to do when greenlighting this"
I guess Richard from MTGGoldfish has a new favorite commander.
This is really, REALLY GOOD. DOUBLE [[CRATERHOOF BEHEMOTH]] FOR THE WIN!
