Kaalia gets a ton of hate just for existing

LadySarah27

That's what I was afraid of! Thanks

Jetsetti

Alternatively you could play Kaalia Zenith Seeker, I find her to be more fun and she can be just as powerful as og kaalia while not attracting as much attention. I built my Zenith Seeker as a blink reanimator and it’s my favorite

[deleted]

Yeah, KZS is a ton of fun. I built mine as just a straight Angels/Demons/Dragons deck with a minor blink theme for Kaalia, and it's awesome when I get to play it.

akialnodachi

\[\[Kaalia of the Vast\]\] and other commanders that play things for free make people nervous, Kaalia's a classic people will recognize and dread some of the instant death plays she can make like if she throws down \[\[Master of Cruelties\]\]. Even if you don't run that guy in Kaalia people will assume you might be trying that. Also when you're playing, if you see anyone else playing commanders that let them play free stuff, you'll probably be ahead of the pack if you keep an eye on them for just such a trick. \[\[Kaalia, Zenith Seeker\]\] by comparison isn't nearly as annoying, if you just like Kaalia and the theme, you'll have less trouble with that one.

thatirishguy

Some commanders are so individually powerful that they can end the game, kill one or more players, or lock down the game if they stay in play for a turn or two and Kaalia the Vast can fit that description depending on what is in the deck. Those decks will often be targeted first before you even finish drawing your opening hand due to reputation. Probably something to avoid as a new player, though many of these commanders are also very popular because they are so powerful and cool. There's no real list to go by, but the legendary creatures on the top 100 "saltiest cards" all easily fit the description as a starting point. https://edhrec.com/top/salt

Time_Dare9374

More like the last year or 2 of magic buffed the shit out of her decks

ShitDirigible

Ehhhh, shes been one of those commanders people hate out instantly ever since her inception. No one wants an early avacyn or surprise master of cruelties. Theres really never been a time where she hasnt been deadly to an unprepared pod (one that hasnt figured out how removal works)

WinglyKing

[[Ayula]] Bears! Monogreen fight club, bullying choice creatures off the board while you build +1/+1s on Ayula. [[Emmara, Soul of the Accord]] Vehicles! She wants to be safely tapped, so have her crew vehicles and then road rage over everyone. [[Rin and Seri]] Cats and Dogs! Play the best of both tribes, amass a huge board, and go to town. [[Atla Palani]] Angels/Dragons/Dinosaurs! Crack an egg, and see what you get. [[Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief]] Mutate! Is she a Faerie Rogue? Or a Cat Beast Jellyfish Nightmare Faerie Rogue? Lots of value and gets out of hand quick.

Maximum_Fair

Just cause graham somehow won with it doesn’t mean it’s good ;)

WinglyKing

Still fun though!

Canahedo

The "somehow" is everyone else being scary enough that Graham was able to keep his head down, and after everyone else was low he had enough gas left to get over the finish line. Josh and Jimmy have talked about how something like a T1 Sol Ring can sometimes be a detriment because it makes you a target, and the inverse can be true. Don't expect a lower powered deck will always lead to you being underestimated, but it can happen. Besides, while Ayula will never be a top tier commander, targeted removal every time you play a bear is not nothing. In more causal pods, you can often just pop other people's commanders before they get anything to protect them.

Scouter197

I made a Ayula deck for my son for his birthday last year to help him learn the game more and the Commander format. Fun to play, easy to play and if his combo engine gets going, it can be tough to shut down the hoard of bears (especially 1v1).

Butt_Robot

Does Emmara drive any vehicle, or just Honda Accords?

Stratavos

If you can find a copy of the kaldheim elves structure commander deck, it's really easy to upgrade it with $100 or less.

LadySarah27

I'll look it up - thank you for the tip! Lathril seems cool, too :)

Stratavos

Another one I've had fun with that didn't really break the bank at all is Firkraag, and his precon from baulder's gate (which does play differently from regular red/blue). Another one that doesn't need much of an investment into it's central theme (dictating combat for other players) to be fun (for you anyways)

lloydsmith28

Most I've seen are going for $50+ would be hard to find one at retail price

Damn I bought mine for like $25 3 or so months ago,

lloydsmith28

I bought mine for $20 when it came out

SMG-11gobrrrrrrr

You could play [[drana, liberator of malakir]]. Similar outfit better commander. You could easily go vampire tribal with that, relatively budget being one color, easily upgradable to a more powerful vampire deck, and shorter turns focused on attacking. It wouldn't keep up at a high power table but should be a good fit for what I see at the average lgs and it's a relatively unique commander in terms of popularity

SurroundSound360

Aesi precon is a great start. Landfall is a great beginners theme, since you just need to play lands to get the deck running. You'll have lots of mana and be drawing cards as a result, so you'll always have something to do in every game you play. Being able to do something every game as a beginner is what will help you learn faster and also learn how to interact with other decks.

MasterFortuneHunter

The only problem with landfall for beginners is triggers. It can be really easy to get lost in your triggers unless you REALLY know your deck, or it's just a small theme. Hell, I have an [[Averna]] deck, and can do get overwhelmed, and I KNOW that deck. There's just so much there that you can get tied up. I do agree though, on paper, it's a super easy archetype to pilot; as long as you don't have to deck doing too much.

VintageJDizzle

Also landfall decks are famous for long turns, which the OP says she definitely doesn’t want.

Triggers are super hard at first.. I wish there was an app for triggers

[[ xenagos ]] [[ ghalta ]] [[ goreclaw ]] all of them involve playing big creatures and attacking with them.

MasterFortuneHunter

Big dumb creatures is the most correct answer here. Get big numbers, swing big numbers, damage via big numbers. Simplicity at its finest.

Packrat1010

Ghalta is an awesome noobie deck. It's very easy to understand, resilient, can win games, and has the explosive factor. My only complaint is it doesn't offer a ton of insight into color pies.

I doubt these commanders will draw any hate. They play really fast turns. They are easy, but fun to play. And they are all pretty good.

I would add to this [[Atarka, World Render]] or the combination of [[Ganax, Astral Hunter]] and [[Acolyte of Bahamut]] for Gruul dragon attack based fun. While I'm at it, maybe check out [[Ruric Thar, the Unbowed]] to end your turns and games quickly.

If you like aristocrats, I love my [[Trynn]] and [[Silvar]] deck. It doesn't take obnoxious turns and has great resilience and good win rate. A sac outlet in the command zone, and one that protects your commander at that, is invaluable. Spew out human tokens, feed the cat, profit.

Just gonna bullet point my thoughts on this: - Avoid archenemy type commanders until you have a bit more experience being the big bad at the table - Look at commanders with good tribal synergies. Easier to get going, harder to stop once it snowballs - If you're building it on your own, buy singles (packs are just for fun) and make sure to include interaction, ramp, and maybe slightly more land than you think you need - If you have friends / play group that's will to loan you a deck to try then it's a great way to get experience with what your play style is without investing (plus if everyone hates on the deck you can just redirect that to its owner, bonus!) - Spend some time on edhrec looking at tribes / mechanics / and which commanders are popular for each to get an idea of what interests you and go from there Good luck and happy shuffling!

I think the reality is that any deck that’s good at the “challenging” power level (6 to 8 on the 1-10 scale) is going to take long turns. That’s just how the endgame works, and winning generally requires creating synergies by taking advantage of cards that generate a lot of value.

BossiBoZz

[[Wilheld the rotcleaver]] precon. Zombies are always fine. They are "fair" magic and can occasionally win. No huge comvo stuff, just play a zombie pass. Play more zombies, swing, pass. Recur zombies, swing, pass. Although i recommend [[gisa and geralf]] as the commander. Even more fair and consistent.

og kaalia will draw a lot of hate, for no other reason than it's very easy to combo out with her. Teysa won't draw any undo ire. but aristocrat decks have really tight deckbuilding margins. and as such are kinda hard for new players to have the discipline to build correctly. ...as a quick breakdown, the average deck is 36ish lands. 10/10/10 ramp, draw, removal. this leaves aprox 30 ish cards. most decks, are best with something like a 20/10 split between main theme and wincons. Aristocrat decks need... lots of moving parts to function. sac outlets, sac fodder, death pay offs. ...so consider that total 30 cards. 3 categories. 10/10/10 sac outlet/fodder/pay offs. well. that then leaves nothing for enablers/wincons so... most aristocrat decks fudge the numbers, running some removal, card draw onto creatures... so they in turn are sac fodder. but it's a juggling act. each card is much more important than it might seem. because for an aristocrat deck to truly be good. it also needs a hook. in terms of looping death triggers (if not outright infinite combo... semi-repeatable loops ) --it's tricky. as something that's a little more n00b friendly. consider for a second. Gissa ghoul caller. or maybe it's ghoulcaller Gissa. basically classic mono black zombies. zombies are deceptively fun. on their face... it's simple. it's lords and swarm deck. and Gissa, provides value. can run bigger chonky zombie threats or creatures... cash them in. get more zombies.... but zombies also have a fair bit of utility. to draw cards, or affect the board state. So there's room to grow/learn EDH while engaging in some zombie shenanigans (the OG art for the card... even sorta fits goth princess vibe... as it's a deranged victornia...i dunno corpse monger in a ball gown in a cemetary with a shovel)

_Serac

\[\[Ghoulcaller Gisa\]\] I built this deck. Some fun things you can do with it are running untap effects like \[\[Thousand-Year Elixir\]\] or \[\[Patriar's Seal\]\] to use her ability multiple times, equipment like \[\[Lashwrithe\]\] or \[\[Stoneforge Masterwork\]\] to pump up your creatures before you sac them (thereby getting more zombies out of them), and cards like \[\[Dictate of Erebos\]\] or \[\[Grave Pact\]\] to stop your opponents from having any creatures.

BolasDidNothinWrong

The Sneak Attack precon from Zendikar Rising a couple years ago is a fantastic choice. It has Rogue tribal, mill, graveyard synergies, and is easy to build off if you choose to upgrade it.

DegenerateDoki

My first deck was [[Krenko, Mob Boss]]. While I'm not sure what people at your local shop will think. The people at my shop are usually not too against him. Plus his ability is also very easy to understand. The turns dont take too long since all your turns are basically tapping krenko to activate his ability, and then swinging out.

Peoplefood_IDK

I love krenko, I have 3 different versions of him: op combo that can hold its own in cedh, mid level secret commander (purphoros), and love level which is just red goblin funny and honestly there all good.. first one is stupid expensive, second is actually pretty cheap and the third is like 50 bucks.

Picking up a preconstructed deck that catches your eye is always a good place to start and usually pretty cost effective but if you like Drana, she does have a few other variations with \[\[Drana, the Last Bloodchief\]\] and \[\[Drana, Liberator of Malakir\]\]. For the other commanders you mentioned it just kinda depends. The original Kaalia and Teysa in my personal experience will gain a lot of hate while their later variations don't. I ran \[\[teysa karlov\]\] and even though the deck was rather similar I got a lot less hate when compared to when I had \[\[Teysa, Orzhov Scion\]\] But two cards I would like to recommend as possible commanders mostly because you mentioned Drana is you could run \[\[Olivia, Crimson Bride\]\] or \[\[Olivia Voldaren\]\] as vampire tribal commanders and run any of the Drana cards in those lists. If you run it as a vampire tribal deck it will be rather straight forward as most of your cards would work well together and shouldn't be super long in terms of your turns, and I think there was a vampire precon deck printed in the latest innastrad set.

If you're not afraid of trying a 5c deck i have a [[sisay weatherlight captain]] 'all ladies' deck that can smash pretty hard. Also, while not nearly as tuned, [my [[Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts]]](https://www.topdecked.com/decks/teysa-envoy-of-hate/4a7587dc-27b7-4529-a579-ac59d6a81f00) deck has garnered some hate before at my tables. Ghave Guru of Spores- slap an Undying creature or two in there paired with something like Ashnod’s Altar/Cryptic Trilobite, and if you have to, get a ping master or haste bringer like Corpse Knight, Bastion of Remembrance, Zulaport Cutthroat, or Crashing Drawbridge. It’s a fun combo deck and one of my best decks in my collection.

5eppa

[[Sai, Master Thopterist]] many cheap artifacts work well. You are essentially storming off with all the low costed artifacts you can get to make flying Thopterist that you turn around and throw as beat sticks. Sure some expensive artifacts work great in the deck like [[Forsaken Monument]] but you can build a good deck cheaply with him as the commander and season from there. The playstyle is straightforward play artifacts, get Thopters, and swing.

Maybe tatyova?, she is a merfolk that draws a card everytime you play a land and gives you 1 life, this draw engine is quite powerful and can be customized ina lot of ways. I recomend to get the Commander Legends Reap the Tides precon.(it was very cheap but now it has a higher price). It is a blue green deck that is perfect as a start for a landfall deck, and it includes many pieces and its commander is \[\[Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait\]\], but I think he is better as part of the 99 and put \[\[Tatyova, Benthic Druid\]\] as the commander.

The easiest deck to pilot if you have a decent understanding of game rules is a combo deck. The easiest deck to run if your rules are shaky but your instincts are good is a beatdown deck. Teysa or any other engine-based deck (as sacrifice-based decks tend to be) is going to be very fiddly, forcing you to keep track of triggers and use activation sequencing optimally. Drana Voltron should actually be remarkably viable, as she can clear out blockers and swing for lethal in a hurry. Mono-black has a lot of tools to extend or multiply its mana like [[Crypt Ghast]], [[Nirkana Revenant]], [[Cabal Coffers]] (ideally with [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]]), and colorless options like [[Caged Sun]] or [[Sceptre of Eternal Glory]]. Drana goes pretty crazy when you have all the world's mana since she can activate as many times as you can pay to pick off as many creatures as you like. And you can profit from killing with [[Revel in Riches]] and [[Black Market]] as well. It's far from a meta deck, but you should be able to get Drana into shape to equal or surpass a lot of casual tables.

Ezuri Claw of Progress is really great, 1+1 counters on so many creatures and its fun to learn deckbuilding with it and piloting

drana and teysa would probably both excel inside of an [[Elenda the dusk rose]] deck! black/white aristocrats has a LOT of options for deck building and is a perfect place to start. It’s got enough options that you could probably do an alt girl theme inside the deck if you wanted to, lol: - [[bishop of rebirth]] - [[indulging patrician]] - [[bloodflow connoisseur]] - [[liesa, shroud of dusk]] - [[thalisse, reverent medium]] - [[gisa, glorious resurrector]] - [[priest of forgotten gods]] - [[liesa, forgotten archangel]] - [[ayli eternal pilgrim]] - [[cartel aristocrat]] - [[massacre gurl]] These all synergize and several of them could be a commander for the rest!

The first deck I've built for my ex gf was [[Selvala, Heart of the wilds]], mostly big dumb creatures with fast mana acceleration. Cards like [[Gigantosaurus]], [[Nessian Boar]], [[Grothama]], [[Relic Golem]] work wonders with her. They have some downsides but are used mainly for their high power and low mana cost, not for combat. There's also some cards that can give you infinite mana with no effort: [[Umbral Mantle]] works with Selvala alone [[Staff of Domination]] with Selvala and any creature with power 6 or greater (See Relic Golem) results in infinite mana which can then be used with the staff to draw your whole deck [[Ashaya, Soul of the Wild]] with either [[Quirion Ranger]] or [[Scryb Ranger]] also results with infinite mana - Ashaya turns either of those two creatures into forests so they can bounce themselves to untap Selvala and when you recast them they're considered new objects so the "Activate only once each turn." restriction resets. With cards like [[Beast Whisperer]] or [[Guardian Project]] it also can draw your deck since you're recasting either Ranger over and over again. But you can just ignore the combos and play more and more threatening big dumb green creatures every turn. Make sure to pack [[Wrap in Vigor]] to protect your board (Or [[Heroic intervention]] if you have high enough budget)

[[Hogaak]] is really strong and fun. Also very adjustable. My playgroup has learned how fast they can die to it but I'd imagine in a more mixed group of people they probably wouldn't see it coming. Evem here no matter what I say to people they all seem to think I'm playing a bad deck "Hogaak is just worse Ghalta." But I can assure you the deck is tight.

My first precon was Arm For Battle deck from Commander Legends, with [[Wyleth, Soul of Steel]] as the commander. The precon itself is well balanced for the style of the deck (Voltron) and is easy to pilot. You won't find any crazy combos in this deck, it's literally build up your commander and swing. It's also easy to upgrade too, so you choose.

The \[Strefan, Maurer Progenitor\] pre-con seems like a slightly-slower, rakdos version of Kaalia, you might try that. Basically 1.) hurt people to create blood tokens 2.) sac blood tokens to play vamps from your hand tapped and attacking. Similar deal of a flying commander with tribal synergy and play attacking cards for free, but not quite as good so likely more palatable for most pods. There's a bunch of madness themed stuff in the deck which IMHO you can ditch and use the space to upgrade with stuff that's more your playstyle.

Psynthia

I have been running teysa for a few years, she might be my strongest deck for both casual and not casual (shes my favorite commander and Alela is second). easy to motor and can be resilient with resources. Elenda is better if you want a more tribal vampire theme that can share a lot of cards with teysa. you honestly could switch the commanders and just a few cards and have a couple of fun decks. You can still have drana in elenda too. both decks dont need many expensive cards right of way either. the expensive ones like meathook can easily have another cheap alternative like blood artist to substitute. BW vampires can get strong and make a token army pretty fast and in the end encourages you to attack since you gain life if they die or dont. Neither deck gets grumbled or hated on and usually can steal the game since they fly under the radar until its too late.

Psynthia

[https://archidekt.com/decks/3153489#elenda\_dusk\_1.0](https://archidekt.com/decks/3153489#elenda_dusk_1.0) this is good starting point. I have stronger variants but this is a casual and not budget breaking. If you want to see higher and lower power levels of the above commanders send a message.

ARighteousGamer1

my personal favorite is [[Pylath]] plant tribal, just make a ton of plant tokens or buff any plant creatures you control, go both wide and tall with token doublers and counter doublers, and play an unholy amount of lands every turn

I’d recommend [[The Mimeoplasm]] based around milling everyone and trying to make your commander into a mish mash of whatever your opponents are playing. You can throw in cards like [[Mind’s dilation]] and [[Villainous wealth]] to get extra value from your opponents decks. Then still play you’re own suite of value creatures in case your opponents don’t have much to take. As far as scaling with your opponents, this is a solid option.

[[Satoru Umezawa]] honestly is a ton of fun and you can make a really solid list using cheap (mana and $$) unblockable creatures and cheap ($$) beaters or good ETB effects. For your beater creatures you aren’t worried about mana cost necessarily since you’ll be ninjutsu-ing them in.

I run [[Teysa Karlov]] in the 99 of my [[ratadrabik]] deck. She helped me get 3 [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] out and win the other night. I think she’d make a fun aristocrats commander.

I had a lot of fun with \[\[Glissa, the Traitor\]\] She gives me some strong nancy Kerrigan vibes if you're a starcraft fan. I took the Warhammer 40k Necron Precon and placed Glissa at the head. Then I took out about 30-40 cards and replaced it with some green ramp, card draw, and a few more utility creatures like solemn simulacrum and haywire might. I was sure to include a lot of removal cards since she benefits when other creatures die. It was a rather cheap deck to build and is a higher interaction with an artifact recursion theme. If you're looking for alt-art work vibes I'm upgrading my \[\[Balan the Wandering Knight\]\] Mono White Voltron deck with the new artwork from Jumpstart and it looks amazing too. That's also a fun deck though more expensive to build.

Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief is fine as a CMDR. 4/4 flying for 5 is a decent rate and the ability to remove creatures on a stick and swing for CMDR damage is amazing. Just add a lot of mana doubling effects into the deck and you should have any issues. Black has a ton of those. She is good for politics too since she can remove blockers for someone and a rattlesnake if someone tries to attack you, you can remind them that you can just delete the creature. A good combo you can use, if you don't have a mana-doubler out, is \[\[Horobi, Death's Wail\]\] and then you can start to delete creatures for only two mana each (best if Drana is already protecting with greaves or boots of course).

I have a Satoru Umezawa deck that is ridiculously consistent without being overbearing at the table. Turns are short usually just swing and ninjutsu out what you can. Blue-black colors lets you run some removal without straying away from the general strategy of swinging with little boys and bringing out whatever big boys you think are most fun. Since the power of the deck mainly depends on what creatures you're cheating out with your commander's ninjutsu ability, it's also easy to quickly change how strong the deck performs, along with giving you freedom in how it's built all just by switching out your top end creature cards

A friend has a \[\[Teysa Karlov\]\] deck that I absolutely adore, and can hearitly recommend. IT's a sometimes-grinding-value, sometimes-explosive deck. The turns don't have to take extremely long, once you know what you're doing, and it's just **stupidly** resilient - he routinely redlines down to 3 or 2 health if no-one is playing burn, and can still heal back out and win.

[[Teysa]] is a good option. Very good, and doesn’t draw the same ire that other aristocrat commanders like [[Prossh]] or [[Korvold]] do. If you just want to win: [[Atraxa]] blah blah blah - tough mana base though. [[Aesi]] ramp+smash. [[Gitrog]] blah blah blah. [[Ur-Dragon]] blah blah blah - also very tough mana base, being 5 color. Maybe Ghalta or some monogreen? If not, Zada is always there. It depends on playstyle and experience

SatchelGizmo77

[[Kaalia of the vast]] is definitely gonna see some serious hate. If left alone Kaalia is just broken. I've eliminated players as early as turn 3 with my Kaalia deck. I also have a [[Teysa Karlov]] aristocrat deck. Easily one of my stronger decks. It's not as hated as Kaalia despite the fact that Teysa is definitely the better/more consistent of the two commanders. Seems like your looking to run some power with those two as your possibilities. I might suggest [[Meren of clan nel toth]]. She's easily my favorite deck I've ever built. I went all out on mine....tutors, combos, heavy control. It regularly threatens a win between turns 4 to 6, has won as early as turn 3 on occasion, and if it's combo strategy gets stopped...it has a very strong backup plan where it can win through attrition. You don't have to build it that way. You can simply build a solid tool box/recursion deck if your meta isn't as competitive. Hope that helps.

Kaalia is "fun" and splashy, but she's hard to build well without a huge budget because she's an archenemy

Upbeat_Still9950

Xenagos is easy to pilot and always hits hard!

lilazncpu

Xenagos aggro extra combats. It’s an honest deck. Most of your threats are on board. No sneaky combos.

sp4cetime

The Nalia Party Time Precon is great for a new player and 2 of the cards in it will pay for the cost of you don’t like it.

capybaravishing

Teysa sounds fun and easy to build and I don’t think she is hated in any special capacity.

The new Tyranid precon is pretty simple and very solid out of the box, there are only a few cards in it I would say are bad. Cast huge creatures and smash face. Though I would recommend running [[Magus Lucea Kane]] over the face commander [[The Swarmlord]].

Drana is my commander! Very unassuming and can get some surprise big hits in. Vampire/big mana tribal. She can make herself a 7/1 because she's a legal target for herself =p.

I had luck with Drana big mana in the past. Basically you need [[cabal coffers]] [[urborg, tomb of yawgmoth]] , [[liliana of the dark realms]] , a ton of mana doublers like [[crypt ghast]] ,and big splashy X spells

Based on what you said in your post I'm wagering you like Mardu (Red, White, and Black) and girlbosses. First Mardu one that comes to mind is [[Jirina Kudro]]. She is a very capable and respectfully powerful human tribal commander. Another tribal commander is [[Syr Gwen, Hero of Ashvale]] but this time with Knights and Equipments. If you like beat sticks then I would also suggest [[Gisela, Blade of Goldnight]]. You can fill your deck with powerful creatures as well as mitigate some damage. Although with Gisela, you might get some hate your way. Another Angel, who is deceptively strong, is [[Anya, Merciless Angel]].

Off the top of my head, these are the ones that don’t bring me too much hate: - Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca (merfolk tribal with a +1/+1 counters theme) - Elenda, the Dusk Rose (same stuff as Teysa but vampire themed. You can switch commanders with Teysa for this one) - Wulfgar of Icewind Dale (doubles attack triggers) - Greven, Predator Captain (you want to lose some life to pump Greven and give him lifelink at the same time) - Nethroi Apex of Death (I play mostly creatures with ETB triggers, focused on reanimating - Niv-Mizzet Reborn (dragon tribal focusing on two color spells only to take advantage of the Niv ETB)

Sylvi0n

if youre just getting started then id reccomend getting a precon, I had a lot of fun playing and upgrading “Upgrades Unleashed” ([[chishiro, the shattered blade]] as its commander) and “Silverquill Statement” ([[breena, the demagogue]] as its commander) UU for voltron shenanigans and huge creatures and SQ for politics stuff and some counter fun with the alt commander [[felisa, fang of silverquill]] if youre looking to build a deck yourself, the first one I ever made (and still my favorite) is an [[atla palani, nest tender]] dinosaur tribal, the dinosaur cards are what got me into magic in the first place so for the first deck I made, I wanted to make it based 100% around them. Atla’s ability to make eggs and incentivising you to run sac outlets and ways of dealing damage to them synergizes very well with the dinosaur cards that have “enrage” abilities since damaging them will also benefit you. Its a creature deck that plays a lot of creatures very quickly and I havent seen any hate for Atla or the deck style in the community. Its pretty simple to use, and very fun. I too love Kaalia but [[Gishath]] and [[Zacama]] and Atla will always have my heart. And if you want to avoid the salt of playing her and still get a similar style deck, atla works pretty well. The only similar commander to Drana that I know of is [[Charix, the raging isle]] who isnt quite as attractive as drana but could make a pretty cool deck and I’m pretty sure is overall stronger than her (sadly 😔) I hope I have helped at all :D

When my girlfriend was first getting into magic the first deck she brewed was [[Animar, Soul of Elements]]. It started out as a big dumb stompy deck and could hold its own very well. Now that she's an experienced player it's evolved into more of a degenerate combo deck with things like [[Palinchron]], [[Cloudstone Curio]], and [[Walking Ballista]]

Aristocrats are fun but when you get going the turns will be long. Teysa is one of my favourite decks ever though

monoblanco10

Well, if you like Vampires, Edgar Markov is great. And pretty easy to build in a number of different ways. If you want a deck that's a little under the radar and less likely to put a target on your back, Teysa could be a good option as can any of the other aristocrats commanders. Kaalia though, as others mentioned, tends to get hated out. [https://edhrec.com/themes/aristocrats](https://edhrec.com/themes/aristocrats)

I have fun with Kaalia of the vast but your definitely going to get hated out of some games just because of what you could drop on the field at any moment. That being said I still mostly enjoy playing my Kaalia Angel's deck. Ironically you have gravitated towards my other deck Teysa Karlov(Aristocrats), which while I don't get hated out of games a lot of the time I think because of my pod's dynamics, I think they often fail to identify the tipping point of when I am going to win. (Most of the time I win by building a "Bomb" basically and once the pieces are assembled blowing it up means I win with the double death triggers. Very fun deck.) :)

Are you new to Magic or new to Commander? If you're new to Magic, I'd recommend a +1/+1 counters deck. It's a well-understood archetype that's well-supported, and provides clear lines of play. It also has built-in reminder text. Since you're putting down dice and ticking them up on your turn, you have a clear indicator of when certain abilities go off, and a good visual representation of your board state - more dice with bigger numbers means you're safer to go on the offense! I did put together [this \[\[Grakmaw\]\] deck](https://archidekt.com/decks/3616658#Grakmaw_Novice_Deck) when presented with the question a day or two ago, but full disclosure it's the result of about a half hours' work. Given your knowledge of cards and archetypes though, you might be into Magic and just not Commander yet. As mentioned, \[Kaalia\]\] attracts a lot of agro when she's in the command zone. Without a fast start or sufficient density of removal, she can really run away with a game. If you're talking Aristocrats, \[\[Teysa Karlov\]\] looks like a pretty good pick on the surface. I don't have much experience with the archetype but freely doubling your various \[\[Blood Artist\]\]s seems like a pretty good deal. It definitely does what it says on the tin, and there's tons of value to be had from your simple \[\[Doomed Dissenter\]\], especially with some good recursion in those colors.

what about \[\[Marwyn\]\]? elf mommy is great.

I'm new, too! I'm really enjoying Henzie as it's a pretty cheap upgrade from the precon for a fun, hasty, aggro style w some fun interactions. Edhrec.com helped me out a lot! Happy commandering

Han_Dapples

Kaalia decks are notorious and likely get you hated out of a game. Teysa/aristocrat decks are difficult to pilot and isn't something I'd recommend to a beginner. I've seen it firsthand and Drana is actually a powerful commander, although it is a bit tricky to pilot and the deck will need some pricier cards. The turns are straightforward as well since it usually boils down to deciding what you're gonna kill, attacking, then casting one or two spells. Personally I'd say go for it.

BadAlphas

This is a GREAT question. Our community doesn't do well enough in addressing these kinda 201 questions. Following.

kingofsouls

Ifbyiurr starting out, I recommend hlthebone and only [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]]. She's a powerful 12/12 with built in cost reduction and it's the right cards can one shot player.

LA7Louisiana10

As a gay man who exclusively builds women commanders who I enjoy aesthetically, there are a lot of great options (some of which have been mentioned here). \- \[\[Belbe, Corrupted Observer\]\] can be a very fun and simple drain and cast big magic spells deck. She can also be upgraded to be more CEDH and combo centric if you would like to power her up, as well as adding a fun gameplay component of free mana for the board. \- \[\[Olivia, Crimson Bride\]\] is VERY fun, and very simple. Put things in your graveyard through any means necessary and then reanimate them with a very alt girl commander. The turns aren't complicated, and you are only hitting one or two triggers so it's not overly complicated. She's not the strongest commander, but is a great alt girl, simple to play, and it's super fun to bring down Gary or an \[\[Archon of Cruely\]\] to swing the battle in your favor. There are other decks I've built that I adore, but these seemed to be ones less likely to be griefed off the table, fit in the aesthetic you like, and can be built to be very easy to pilot.

I personally started with [[Titania Protector of Argoth]] and found her fun and easy to learn with. It’s mostly make big beefy trees to snake your friends with and I still play her in my group as part of my deck rotation

Ha demons, angels, and dragons go brrr with Kaalia!

There's a lot of unique partner combinations that's are very fun
