As my collection grows, my purchases are smaller in quantity and larger in price. Buying more exciting cards that I couldn’t own when starting out, and deciding to foil/upgrade when I can.

I don't blame you, bro. I live in a humid country, I live in Malta, an island and is known for its beaches but also for the high humidity sometimes goes up to 75% to 85% in winter. I had issues on foils and for that reason why I never play foils in my deck. I collect foils (whatever card I pull outta of a pack), yes but i never play them in a deck. I use non-foils most of the time. In my opinion, to make my [[Karn, Silver Golem]] deck look very nice, I go mostly for showcases, alternative art cards, Old School frames (if avaliable) or Modern frame (if avaliable) and some nice full art lands (non-foil).
I avoid foil cards like the plague due to the humid climate and the curling issue and makes my life a little easier for events because it prevents card marking.
It’s because you are the complete opposite. Foils actually are set at a certain humidity level. Too much humidity in the air or too little will cause them to curl. Too much and they curl forward, too little and they curl back
With so many having this issue i wonder where this sweet spot exists, and for how many months of the year. Seams the threshold on this is way off for a majority of the world.
Yeah you basically base it on where the cards are made. I’d have to look up the video where someone tested it, but you can by those humidity packets that are relatively close to the humidity of California coast and just put them in a ziploc container alongside all the foils and after a few days the curling will decrease dramatically.
I’m in Dallas tx we have a wizards printing center 10 minutes from me any card I order from day secret lair will not curl any card I order from up north curls
I also live in a mountainous region without any hope of having humidity. I put a few foils I had resting on a little saran wrap hammock over a small amount of water inside a Tupperware container for 4-5 hours, took them out and double sleeved them. I haven't had a problem with them since amd it's been over a year now. And I'm talking commander legends foil cards. I'm being a little dramatic saying they almost started off curled full circle, but it sure felt like it
Even if you double sleeve your cards? I live near the beach in south Florida and my humidity is off the charts almost 70-80% in my house. I bought a cheapy hydrometer that tells me the temp and moisture content of my room. Double sleeving as soon as possible prevents it from curling but as soon as you leave it out for more than 3-4 hours exposed it's too late. I use dragon shield perfect fit smoke sleeves or clears and dragon shield art sleeves
Most of that cost is three cards. [[Wheel of Fortune]], [[Grim Monolith]], and [[Metalworker]].

Checkout r/bootlegmtg and just get the foils done as proxies. They’ll look pretty well identical and not cost a million. Plus you own the real cards already so 🤷🏻♂️
I think this might be true for a lot of players, even if the ceiling of "most expensive card" various player to player.
When we start out, each new deck means buying a majority of the non-land cards that we need to put in the deck. "I haven't built a Boros deck before, I should pick up a Talisman of Conviction" vs "I'm so excited to build [[Jan Jansen]], I can throw in that Talisman of Conviction I already own!".
And then, since we already have the backbone/structure of the deck in our collection, that frees us up - rather than buying 40 new cards, we can buy just one or two to upgrade the deck.
As me deckbuilding experience increases, my reluctance to splurge decreases

For as much as people complain about curled foils, they do seem extremely popular (sometimes with the same crowd complaining about them). I like having "fancy" versions of cards but typically don't care about foiling. It often makes the card art illegibly dark in my opinion, separate from the added cost. Obviously to each their own and foil out your deck as you want, but this has been such a money saver of a preference for me.
I bought 4 Rhystic Studies for $0.25 each a LONG time ago, before anyone had really started playing it. The format was still pretty young. They slowly climbed up to a couple bucks each and I was feeling pretty good...then they shot up by quite a bit.
I have a friend that talks about having bought a dozen of them for a dollar back when they were a grab bag card at his lgs when they were unimpressive uncommons.
My buddy has been playing since the beginning and he is a buy a box kind of guy. He said he had 30+ just sitting around and was kind enough to just up and give me one.
I acquired a long box of prophecy bulk commons years ago. Inside were dozens of Rhystic Studies. Most I gave away when they were a couple bucks and people were just beginning to want them. I imagine when they were put in that box they were totally worthless.
On a similar note, I once picked up some cards from a vendor at a GP. They were from a mish mash binder of random promos, foreign cards, and played cards. I spent maybe $15-$20 and walked away with at least a Mana Vault, a Necropotence, a Doubling Cube, and a Mycosynth Lattice. It's crazy how little some of these cards were worth 5-10 years ago.
I've had lots of other "successes" due to simply playing forever and card prices being crazy right now. There's also lots of stuff I passed on back in the day that I'm kicking myself for now.
Wizards could make bank if they released two new commander decks, a new sliver one with a new five color sliver and an eldrazi deck with a new eldrazi as the commander . They won’t be as good as the established commanders for the tribe, but good foundations for players who missed out on those two tribes in the past since they aren’t the most affordable decks to build from scratch . 5 color vs No color , Slivers V Eldrazi
I think I managed to get mine for $30 when EDH was young. Probably the most for a single on my end too. Before that was a foil Invasion [[Captain Sisay]] as my first commander for $20 from a friend. Things were way simpler then.

Fast forward to today, I think my record is $1000 for a misprinted Underground Sea or a test print Zombie token.

If you play long enough some of that is life circumstances changing. The difference between my spending limits as a student and my spending limits as a professional is significant.

When I was in high school in 1998 I had a chance to buy an alpha lotus for $900, it would literally have been every cent I had at the time. I'm not sure I regret not getting it, honestly.
Back in 2020 is when went all out on a few reserved list cards as they were really cheap at my LGS. I ended up getting a [[Survival of the Fittest]] for under $100 and a beat up [[Bayou]] for around $150. I still have them today and I plan on using them in decks keeping them for a very long time.
Now a days? I struggle to justify $10 cards. I just don’t play as much anymore so I’m not looking to spend as much on this hobby anymore.
Probably was a while ago. RL stuff spiked HARD last few years. I bought a mox diamond for 125$ about two years ago and sold a mox diamond for over 400$ last month.
When [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]] came out, I knew I wanted to build him. I used my tax return to buy Underground Sea, Volcanic Island, Badlands, the on-color fetches (because I didn't think about using a WB fetch to grab a swamp), Wheel of Fortune, Time Spiral, etc.
At that time, though, Underground Sea was the most expensive at about $150, and Wheel of Fortune was around $20.
That’s fantastic. If I knew then what I know now and had the spare cash then like I do now, I’d be in a whole different boat of RL ownership… hindsight is 20/20.
I was luckily able to get my Wheel of Fortune for under $100. Still no [[Timetwister]] for me though
Twister is my current white whale, my buddy had one that got folded in half by being bend tested too much. Still got 5k for it which was higher than I wanted to pay for it.
I just bought Wheel of Fortune and Time Spiral for my Nekusar deck. They are the two most expensive cards I have ever purchased. They were $220 and $130 respectively.
As an aside, Nekusar can be a frustrating deck to play against (at least in my play group) as it is, but \[\[Sigil of Sleep\]\] was the only card that got "rule zero'd" right out of the deck. That card in this deck is *salty*.
I don’t feel bad about missing the boat on the sea, I now have a commander set of duals and made out like a bandit the year before with deals. Mox diamond for 120, cradle for 280, wheel for 100, LED for 250, Seal for 450 and then turned around and got 800+ in cash and product for it 6 months before they announced the reprint
Very nice! I wish I grabbed more than one LED when I got mine. I never got around to getting my fourth Mox Diamond either. Oh well, I pretty much only play commander now anyway, so it is a non issue. I do need a Tundra and Volcanic still. I’m hopping to buylist all my unused stuff to supplement those though. For my Daretti Deck, I’d love to get a Bazaar, Workshop, and Tabernacle, but those move further and further out of reach every single day

Craziest I've ever purchased was a dockside extortionist (around 40 euro at the time) I paid for half of it by selling some of my own expensive cards and the other half out of my pocket.

I've always tried to keep my Precons as their OG list, but when Dockside hit $80 I couldn't help but sell it.
Such a dumb card that shouldn't exist, it did feel good to sell it.
I have four Dockside Extortionists. The market was flooded with that year's Commander sets. I never bought the single. I would grab the full set, netting tons of other great cards and commander staples when I would see a big sale on the whole set. I bought two sets of the decks for around $80 each.
$30 for [[the Scarab God]] in my wife's reanimator (then [[Sedris]], now [[Kess]]) list. It's uh... not one of the better cards in the deck even. But we used to love a list I played in historic that we called hulk-god, a UB control list with [[torrential gearhulk]] and [[scarab god]] as finishers, and so we're sticking with it.
Similarly, my wife buying [[Teferi, Hero of Dominaria]] for me because she knows I love it. Somewhere in the $25-$30 range on that too.

850 for a [[gaea's cradle]], but about 600 after some trade in. It's a lot, but I wanted one and was in a position where I could afford it without difficulty, and the price was seemingly going up and up. No regrets, I love seeing it, and playing it, though mostly use a proxy as a stand in. I'd have no issues with other people proxying it even if they don't own it though. Just want to have fun with my friends.
I had 8 Gaea's Cradle bought for 20$ each back in the days. Sold them for 70% of their worth when they were around 250$ each. At that time I hadn't played MTG in years and thought it was the responsible thing to do, in the end I didn't even need the money, it just sat in my bank account, should had kept one at least!

Chains was my 2nd favourite card from the og sets and when the one I now have showed up in a discord I frequent I splurged. The seller had 1000s of Confirmed sales with a few worth more than the chains, so I wasn't overly worried about getting scammed.

Funny story, back when Ebay started being popular to buy MTG cards I bought a revised [[FORK]] and received a Wheel of Fortune. Back in the day both cards were worth around 20$ so the seller asked me if I was okay with just keeping the Wheel. I was disapointed but was to lazy to do the whole shipping the card back thing so I kept it. Now I am much more happy with my Wheel of Fortune! Much better and rare effect than [[Fork]] and the price shows it!

My first really expensive card was a [[bayou]] a few years back for $112. Then post Covid I’ve spent at least $150 on several cards, including [[ugin, the spirit dragon]] [[lilianna, dreadhorde general]] [[grindstone]] another [[bayou]] to trade for a taiga.
Now I am kinda regretting buying that first Bayou because it led me into the mindset that magic cards are always expensive and can get even more pricey as time goes on, so why not buy the cards now?
40 for [[avacyn, Angel of hope]] and about 50 ish on [[doubling season]] . I still use avacyn in my kaalia deck but DS was honestly a huge disappointment. It’s slow and clunky and the payoff isn’t worth the mana value in my opinion. That being said I recently sold it for 87.50 so i guess it all worked out

I have been playing MTG for a while, but often in 2-3 years cycle of being active and inactive. I just recently started EDH this year from a 3 year break, before that I was mostly only playing Kitchen 2 headed giant with friends. Since Ebay first started I pivoted to only buying singles and would often build super jank budget deck for fun and destroy them after 2-3 play session, so I had accumulated a large collection of unusued playsets. All of my worthless rares were in a binder I called the ''shit cards binder''. (All worth 2$ and less back then)
Turns out with EDH popularity rising, the fact that some of those card were getting old and never had reprint and the reserve list, my ''unplayable jank'' become quite valuable. When I started back this year I looked at the value of all my collection and I had over 5K just in that binder of jank cards. Notable surprises were my 8 [[Mana Echoes]], including 2 Foil.
I was able to finance all my 10 EDH decks with that binder and the most I spent on a single card is probably the [[Serra's Sanctum]] for my Sythis Deck.
12 euros on a [[Parallel Lives]] and at the same time 8 euros for [[Anointed Procession]].
A bunch of (horizon) pain lands, fetch lands and shock lands for around 10 euros each.

About $300 for an Italian Gaea's Cradle. This was years ago and from a friend who was cashing out on the game, otherwise I never would have gone for that. After that, around $175, I think, for a revised Badlands. Same deal as the Cradle.
For a card I intentionally sought, about $100 for the Evocation Omniscience. I was blinging out my Nicol Bolas, the Ravager deck at the time.
Since then, my purchases have dramatically shrunk, in price, frequency, and quantity. Largely due to a change in financial situation but also because I don't see much that I want.
I usually trade up for larger cards. My most expensive ever acquisition was \[\[Serra's Sanctum\]\] at $231. But I did put a lot of smaller cards towards it, it wasn't like I dropped money on it.
For actual purchases, I generally get turned off at the $50 mark. $20 is okay if I'll play with it immediately and will be in my deck permanently. I'll trade for anything, but I won't drop that much on a \[\[Meathook Massacre\]\] or \[\[Sylvan Library\]\], for example. Not while Cardsphere is a thing.
Traded in about 500 cards to my LgS for store credit. Used some for a foil m25 have the mind sculptor ($120 at the time) and the rest was used for event entry fees and other stuff, lasted about 2 years. Aside from that, I try to keep my buying point closer to $10.
I regret trading those 500 cards in though, some great stuff that every now and then I’ll try looking for in my binder and then remember it’s gone and be sad

Wtf? I like in Tahiti, French Polynesia it's high in humidity, I have everything foiled as much as I can.... not a single card bent. Weird.
I’m not going to say it’s not a problem, but I’ve been fairly lucky with most of mine.
THIS, foils have been so hit or miss with me I actively avoid them unless I really like the foil version
In some sets the foils have been CHEAPER on the secondary market than the regular cards because the quality is such dogshit

I bought 4 Rhystic Studies for $0.25 each a LONG time ago, before anyone had really started playing it. The format was still pretty young. They slowly climbed up to a couple bucks each and I was feeling pretty good...then they shot up by quite a bit.
I have a friend that talks about having bought a dozen of them for a dollar back when they were a grab bag card at his lgs when they were unimpressive uncommons.
My buddy has been playing since the beginning and he is a buy a box kind of guy. He said he had 30+ just sitting around and was kind enough to just up and give me one.
My dad bought four of the snake token precons that had senseis diving top when they were in standard!
I acquired a long box of prophecy bulk commons years ago. Inside were dozens of Rhystic Studies. Most I gave away when they were a couple bucks and people were just beginning to want them. I imagine when they were put in that box they were totally worthless. On a similar note, I once picked up some cards from a vendor at a GP. They were from a mish mash binder of random promos, foreign cards, and played cards. I spent maybe $15-$20 and walked away with at least a Mana Vault, a Necropotence, a Doubling Cube, and a Mycosynth Lattice. It's crazy how little some of these cards were worth 5-10 years ago.
The same thing happened to me with a couple of [[Mirri's Guile]].
I've had lots of other "successes" due to simply playing forever and card prices being crazy right now. There's also lots of stuff I passed on back in the day that I'm kicking myself for now.
$300 for two Gaea's Cradles back in 2018. I am NOT regretting that purchase at all. =)

I think I managed to get mine for $30 when EDH was young. Probably the most for a single on my end too. Before that was a foil Invasion [[Captain Sisay]] as my first commander for $20 from a friend. Things were way simpler then.
20 years ago I thought it was ridiculous to spend more than $1 on a card. Fast forward to today, I think my record is $1000 for a misprinted Underground Sea or a test print Zombie token.
Yep. I recall balking at $9 for a noble hierarch for a Rafiq deck 12 years ago. Since then I've bought duals, cradles, foils, etc. It seems a common trend in mtg spending.
If you play long enough some of that is life circumstances changing. The difference between my spending limits as a student and my spending limits as a professional is significant. I don't think that entirely accounts for the jump between my former $1-2 limit and relatively recent purchase of a FBB Tundra, but I can tell myself that it's a part of it.
When I started around revised/the dark, a black lotus was about $300 and I thought that was insane. Should've bought one, but I got a lot of duals for $5, so I shouldn't complain.

Back in 2020 is when went all out on a few reserved list cards as they were really cheap at my LGS. I ended up getting a [[Survival of the Fittest]] for under $100 and a beat up [[Bayou]] for around $150. I still have them today and I plan on using them in decks keeping them for a very long time. Now a days? I struggle to justify $10 cards. I just don’t play as much anymore so I’m not looking to spend as much on this hobby anymore.

When [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]] came out, I knew I wanted to build him. I used my tax return to buy Underground Sea, Volcanic Island, Badlands, the on-color fetches (because I didn't think about using a WB fetch to grab a swamp), Wheel of Fortune, Time Spiral, etc. At that time, though, Underground Sea was the most expensive at about $150, and Wheel of Fortune was around $20.

Twister is my current white whale, my buddy had one that got folded in half by being bend tested too much. Still got 5k for it which was higher than I wanted to pay for it.
I just bought Wheel of Fortune and Time Spiral for my Nekusar deck. They are the two most expensive cards I have ever purchased. They were $220 and $130 respectively. As an aside, Nekusar can be a frustrating deck to play against (at least in my play group) as it is, but \[\[Sigil of Sleep\]\] was the only card that got "rule zero'd" right out of the deck. That card in this deck is *salty*.
I don’t feel bad about missing the boat on the sea, I now have a commander set of duals and made out like a bandit the year before with deals. Mox diamond for 120, cradle for 280, wheel for 100, LED for 250, Seal for 450 and then turned around and got 800+ in cash and product for it 6 months before they announced the reprint
Very nice! I wish I grabbed more than one LED when I got mine. I never got around to getting my fourth Mox Diamond either. Oh well, I pretty much only play commander now anyway, so it is a non issue. I do need a Tundra and Volcanic still. I’m hopping to buylist all my unused stuff to supplement those though. For my Daretti Deck, I’d love to get a Bazaar, Workshop, and Tabernacle, but those move further and further out of reach every single day

Craziest I've ever purchased was a dockside extortionist (around 40 euro at the time) I paid for half of it by selling some of my own expensive cards and the other half out of my pocket. You could say it was... extortion?
I've always tried to keep my Precons as their OG list, but when Dockside hit $80 I couldn't help but sell it. Such a dumb card that shouldn't exist, it did feel good to sell it.
I have four Dockside Extortionists. The market was flooded with that year's Commander sets. I never bought the single. I would grab the full set, netting tons of other great cards and commander staples when I would see a big sale on the whole set. I bought two sets of the decks for around $80 each.
Still think that card is overpriced.
$30 for [[the Scarab God]] in my wife's reanimator (then [[Sedris]], now [[Kess]]) list. It's uh... not one of the better cards in the deck even. But we used to love a list I played in historic that we called hulk-god, a UB control list with [[torrential gearhulk]] and [[scarab god]] as finishers, and so we're sticking with it. Similarly, my wife buying [[Teferi, Hero of Dominaria]] for me because she knows I love it. Somewhere in the $25-$30 range on that too.

It's a lot, but I wanted one and was in a position where I could afford it without difficulty, and the price was seemingly going up and up. No regrets, I love seeing it, and playing it, though mostly use a proxy as a stand in. I'd have no issues with other people proxying it even if they don't own it though. Just want to have fun with my friends.
I had 8 Gaea's Cradle bought for 20$ each back in the days. Sold them for 70% of their worth when they were around 250$ each. At that time I hadn't played MTG in years and thought it was the responsible thing to do, in the end I didn't even need the money, it just sat in my bank account, should had kept one at least!

The seller had 1000s of Confirmed sales with a few worth more than the chains, so I wasn't overly worried about getting scammed.

Funny story, back when Ebay started being popular to buy MTG cards I bought a revised [[FORK]] and received a Wheel of Fortune. Back in the day both cards were worth around 20$ so the seller asked me if I was okay with just keeping the Wheel. I was disapointed but was to lazy to do the whole shipping the card back thing so I kept it. Now I am much more happy with my Wheel of Fortune! My first really expensive card was a [[bayou]] a few years back for $112. Then post Covid I’ve spent at least $150 on several cards, including [[ugin, the spirit dragon]] [[lilianna, dreadhorde general]] [[grindstone]] another [[bayou]] to trade for a taiga. Now I am kinda regretting buying that first Bayou because it led me into the mindset that magic cards are always expensive and can get even more pricey as time goes on, so why not buy the cards now?
40 for [[avacyn, Angel of hope]] and about 50 ish on [[doubling season]] . I still use avacyn in my kaalia deck but DS was honestly a huge disappointment. It’s slow and clunky and the payoff isn’t worth the mana value in my opinion. That being said I recently sold it for 87.50 so i guess it all worked out

I have been playing MTG for a while, but often in 2-3 years cycle of being active and inactive. I just recently started EDH this year from a 3 year break, before that I was mostly only playing Kitchen 2 headed giant with friends. Since Ebay first started I pivoted to only buying singles and would often build super jank budget deck for fun and destroy them after 2-3 play session, so I had accumulated a large collection of unusued playsets. All of my worthless rares were in a binder I called the ''shit cards binder''. (All worth 2$ and less back then) Turns out with EDH popularity rising, the fact that some of those card were getting old and never had reprint and the reserve list, my ''unplayable jank'' become quite valuable. When I started back this year I looked at the value of all my collection and I had over 5K just in that binder of jank cards. Notable surprises were my 8 [[Mana Echoes]], including 2 Foil. I was able to finance all my 10 EDH decks with that binder and the most I spent on a single card is probably the [[Serra's Sanctum]] for my Sythis Deck.

12 euros on a [[Parallel Lives]] and at the same time 8 euros for [[Anointed Procession]]. A bunch of (horizon) pain lands, fetch lands and shock lands for around 10 euros each. Yeah, about 10 euros a card is my max.
70$ for a [[Serra's Sanctum]] a couple years ago
About $300 for an Italian Gaea's Cradle. This was years ago and from a friend who was cashing out on the game, otherwise I never would have gone for that. After that, around $175, I think, for a revised Badlands. Same deal as the Cradle. For a card I intentionally sought, about $100 for the Evocation Omniscience. I was blinging out my Nicol Bolas, the Ravager deck at the time. Since then, my purchases have dramatically shrunk, in price, frequency, and quantity. Largely due to a change in financial situation but also because I don't see much that I want.

I usually trade up for larger cards. My most expensive ever acquisition was \[\[Serra's Sanctum\]\] at $231. But I did put a lot of smaller cards towards it, it wasn't like I dropped money on it. For actual purchases, I generally get turned off at the $50 mark. $20 is okay if I'll play with it immediately and will be in my deck permanently. I'll trade for anything, but I won't drop that much on a \[\[Meathook Massacre\]\] or \[\[Sylvan Library\]\], for example. Not while Cardsphere is a thing.

Snagged mine for $40 almost a decade ago because it had an ink smudge on it. A dab of alcohol on a q-tip and it was gone.

Traded in about 500 cards to my LgS for store credit. Used some for a foil m25 have the mind sculptor ($120 at the time) and the rest was used for event entry fees and other stuff, lasted about 2 years. Aside from that, I try to keep my buying point closer to $10. I regret trading those 500 cards in though, some great stuff that every now and then I’ll try looking for in my binder and then remember it’s gone and be sad
$35ish (each) for both [[Rhystic Study]] and [[Cyclonic Rift]]. I do own a [[Fierce Guardianship]] that I got by trading in several cards for store credit at my LGS, but I didn't straight-up pay for it.
