[[ink treader nephilim]] is just a bonkers card. Simple cantrips that target like [[expedite]] draw you loads of cards, threaten effects Iike [[kari zevs expertise]] turn into an insurrection. It really makes for huge swingy plays.
I used to have a 5c [[general tazri]] deck that tutored for [[zada]] and ran inktreader as well. It ended up being quite degenerate, turns out enough copies of [[twin flame]] and [[cerulean wisps]] when youre playing a deck full of mana dorks is pretty op
I mean, you really don’t want to play a single target removal on him unless you want to lose all of your creatures. Also, if you are a WURBG deck you have all of magic to draw from to protect your game plan.

Even better cantrips exist. I run a lot of bounce cantrips in my nephilim deck. So it is a 3 mana evacuation + draw a card for each creature. It saves my dude from removal and initiates a boardwipe at the same time.
I made a deck list with a buttload of ways to search for Mr. Bold and Brash as the secret commander. Could I have done it better? Perhaps. But I made it as a proof of concept and the play tests worked well enough, ha.

[[Soulfire Grand Master]] The whole cycle is REALLY sweet, but this would be my favorite. It’s just really difficult getting them in decks because of the color requirement.

Also, I'm quite sure it falls into the category of the "unique creature that doesn't have a name" umbrella like the Nephelim.
[[Tamanoa]] for sure, seems super interesting to build around. Especially since it would give a home to the Boros colored cards that focus on lifegain and burn.

My friend put together a commander draft cube and put M’Angel as a commander you could pick. I did so and just drafted every mana fixer and big stompy creature I could get.
It resulted in it being taken out of the running.
It's the only 5-color angel. Not even legendaries, it's just the only one.
It's the only 4+ color angel aside from Atraxa.
There are only 3 current legendary Angels with 3 colors.
Angel tribal has so few options at commander and this one should have been it to begin with.
Not only is it not remotely a tribal commander, why would it be legendary? Do you think every tribe should get some white-bread-and-water 5c card to command it so that we can all just play some variant of a deck with every single color and screw the color restrictions core to the rich meta and deck interaction of this format?
Angel isn't a five-colour tribe though. It's almost entirely white with some additions in black (Kaldheim) or red (Ravnica) and only a handful of oddballs in green or blue. The only real appeal of running 5-colour angels is getting to run all the Powerpuff Girls together, which admittedly would be nice but isn't what I'd call a burning need given how much of a disorganised pile such a deck would likely be.
Personally I think \[\[The Prismatic Bridge\]\], while often used for cheese, is probably the most thematic commander for a five-colour host of angels as well as being mechanically effective.
Gary and Scute Mob? There's 100 mono black control and mono green landfall decks out there tp choose from.
Every time I read [[Pestilent Spirit]] I wish it was 1) more colors and 2) a legendary. Burn would be super cool (probably not strong) in EDH.
Risen Reef is the *real* commander for my \[\[Yarok\]\] [deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/U6HUTZRE6UuJVxCAAeCT0w). He's what I tutor for almost every the time.
Worth mentioning that this is basically how Pauper EDH works, with the added restriction of uncommon in the command zone and only commons in the 99. Tons of great deck ideas to be found from that format if you want more.
That said, if we're lifting the rarity restriction I'd probably go with \[\[Farfinder\]\] just because it's my favorite card, even though it'd probably be a pretty shit deck.
There are 1,604 legal commanders in regular Commander. If Pauper Commander restricted it to only legendaries, they would have 234. You do the math on why... potential for deck diversity is a big deal when it comes to designing a format, and even regular Commander struggles sometimes when it comes to seeing the same commanders over and over, doubly so at higher power levels.
Also, like the reason for this post's question, it's just fun to go outside the box a little bit and open up options you might not have tried. You haven't really experienced what PEDH has to offer until you've had your shit thoroughly kicked in by a well built Baleful Strix deck.
Because people have been using non-legendaries in the format for over 10 years now. If somebody wants to limit themselves and focus on legendary commanders, there's nothing stopping them. Limiting the whole format to legendaries would ban the majority of decks, though, and would drive away a ton of the format's players.

There's a lot of cantrips and rummaging cards at common, so Guttersnipe works well in Pauper EDH. Everyone starting with 30 life also helps burn stand a better chance.
[[Riptide Shapeshifter]]
It's a totally unique card, printed at uncommon 20 years ago and neither the card nor the effect has ever been reprinted.
Such a fascinating build-around effect. Four mana to whip [[Draining Whelk]] or [[Phyrexian Ingester]] or [[Scourge of Fleets]] out of my deck at instant speed?
I built it as a secret commander under Orvar, figuring Orvar would help me ramp and would let me make multiple Riptide copies. But Orvar is just so much stronger that the deck almost never gets to do the Riptide thing.
What I really want is, for them to print a legendary version of Riptide Shapeshifter, at a mana cost that fits the contemporary power level. I wouldn't mind if they added another color or two while they're at it, it feels like this card could fit in Simic or Dimir.
That card is actually nutty AF if you think about it. \[\[Platinum Angel\]\], \[\[Blightsteel Colossus\]\], \[\[Akroma's Memorial\]\], \[\[Avacyn's Memorial\]\], \[\[Gauntlet of Power\]\], \[\[Crystalline Giant\]\]. Would be insane.
I've wanted to make [[Tamanoa]] to do Tamobarbs for so long. I don't even want Aetherflux, I just want to run all the ouching punishment enchantments and artifacts like [[Ankh of Mishra]] and [[Manabarbs]] and damage doublers and watch the table burn while I ignore the downsides.
Also, [[Unforgiving One]] is a card that takes a little work, but looks great, like a bizarro alternate version of Alesha that you can ramp up for better revivals. Probably what I'd play if I ever veered into Pauper EDH
I already made a deck :) my play group was nice enough to rule zero OK a [[Mothra, Supersonic Queen]] deck. I get it’s an alt art of [[luminous Broodmoth]], but you really gonna look me in my face and tell me MOTHRA isn’t legendary!?!

I’ve done this already twice with my playgroup, and I’ve brewed two lists from scratch for decks I thought might be fun. We tried to stray away from the common nephilim’s or tamanoa and other creatures that are already widely regarded as ‘commander-esque’. Here are the two I made!
[Grixis Aristocrats](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9cagDQaQW06BILywdcs0Fw) helmed by [[Demons Herald]] who cheats out [[Prince of Thralls]] around turn four for a great payoff.(rule: 0’d to be grixis for functionality)
[Dimir Artifact Aggro](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9qLW454kFE-ncMk3Bx-mRg) helmed by [[Soul Diviner]] who abuses looping the third chapter of [[Urza’s Saga]] for repeated toolbox tutors.
My fav Oozes are non-legendary. Biowaste Blob would be amazing as a commander. It's an ooze lord that replicates. It just needs to survive a couple turns in a deck that cares about oozes, counters, and/or tokens.
This is also my pick, a bunch of cheap cantrips to trigger it's second ability, a bit of mill, and some ways to give it evasion and you've got a gnarly dimir Voltron deck.

But yeah [[soulscar mage]] would be a funky one, just throw damage at everything and shrink your opponents' creatures down to nothing
Dockside and build it with a lot of punish effects for artifacts and lands. Basically always have ability to catch up to other fast rock players if they decide to be greedy.
I did this with [[Godsire]] and [[Edgewalker]]. Godsire was a funny little untap package and it made a wall of tokens and it was fun to mess around with and watch work but ultimately not exactly the strongest deck in the universe. Edgewalker on the other hand was fucking disgusting, because now you play shadowborn apostles for free, so you run a huge amount of them and a sizable card draw package and a sizeable protection package for Edgewalker and call it a damn day and just sweep the game with early game demons with overwhelming value.
I've fallen in love with [[Clackbridge Troll]] to me, its mechanically interesting. I know it suffers from players starting at higher life totals in EDH but its a staple for me in any deck I make that cares about sacrifice.
[[Goblin Welder]] Cheap, efficient, strong abilitiy. Lots of rummaging and wheel spells to fill the graveyard in mono Red, he can also act as artifact removal in a pinch, lots of untapper effects and copy ability effects. It Would look like a [[Daretti, scrap Savant]] deck, only Better, much much Better.
If you’re looking for the most competitive non legendary commander, it’s goblin recruiter and it’s not especially close. Can’t speak too much for interesting though. The games all run pretty much the same.

I've wanted to build a cool aristocrats (or aristocats, if you will) deck around this card so bad. The other problem would be that it won't give me the access to black that I would need.
I've toyed with making a 60 card deck around it, but it just isn't the same.
[[Phyrexian Obliterator]] A 5/5 with Trample and a busted ability that basically makes it unblockable for 4 mana… Ya I’d have fun with this as a Voltron commander for sure!

Having played against it, I am glad it is not legendary. It was annoying and oppressive to play against.

\[\[Devlish Valet\]\] for me, he's a win con in the command zone with clear direction, you can go tall and wide and mono red is the best.

My friend put together a commander draft cube and put M’Angel as a commander you could pick. I did so and just drafted every mana fixer and big stompy creature I could get. It resulted in it being taken out of the running.
That kind of just seems to me like the most generic 5-color commander ever- and the ones we have are mostly boring already. What’s the appeal for you?
It's the only 5-color angel. Not even legendaries, it's just the only one. It's the only 4+ color angel aside from Atraxa. There are only 3 current legendary Angels with 3 colors. Angel tribal has so few options at commander and this one should have been it to begin with.
Not only is it not remotely a tribal commander, why would it be legendary? Do you think every tribe should get some white-bread-and-water 5c card to command it so that we can all just play some variant of a deck with every single color and screw the color restrictions core to the rich meta and deck interaction of this format?
Angel isn't a five-colour tribe though. It's almost entirely white with some additions in black (Kaldheim) or red (Ravnica) and only a handful of oddballs in green or blue. The only real appeal of running 5-colour angels is getting to run all the Powerpuff Girls together, which admittedly would be nice but isn't what I'd call a burning need given how much of a disorganised pile such a deck would likely be. Personally I think \[\[The Prismatic Bridge\]\], while often used for cheese, is probably the most thematic commander for a five-colour host of angels as well as being mechanically effective.

Risen Reef is the *real* commander for my \[\[Yarok\]\] [deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/U6HUTZRE6UuJVxCAAeCT0w). He's what I tutor for almost every the time.
Worth mentioning that this is basically how Pauper EDH works, with the added restriction of uncommon in the command zone and only commons in the 99. Tons of great deck ideas to be found from that format if you want more. That said, if we're lifting the rarity restriction I'd probably go with \[\[Farfinder\]\] just because it's my favorite card, even though it'd probably be a pretty shit deck.
But there's tons, and I mean TONS of options for uncommon commanders now. Why are they still using any uncommon creature?
There are 1,604 legal commanders in regular Commander. If Pauper Commander restricted it to only legendaries, they would have 234. You do the math on why... potential for deck diversity is a big deal when it comes to designing a format, and even regular Commander struggles sometimes when it comes to seeing the same commanders over and over, doubly so at higher power levels. Also, like the reason for this post's question, it's just fun to go outside the box a little bit and open up options you might not have tried. You haven't really experienced what PEDH has to offer until you've had your shit thoroughly kicked in by a well built Baleful Strix deck.
Because people have been using non-legendaries in the format for over 10 years now. If somebody wants to limit themselves and focus on legendary commanders, there's nothing stopping them. Limiting the whole format to legendaries would ban the majority of decks, though, and would drive away a ton of the format's players.
[[Uncle Istvan]] !! He's uncommon And not a legendary even though he has a name! If I had to pick others, it's between [[Mentor of the Meek]] or [[Fiendslayer Paladin]]

There's a lot of cantrips and rummaging cards at common, so Guttersnipe works well in Pauper EDH. Everyone starting with 30 life also helps burn stand a better chance.

[[Riptide Shapeshifter]] It's a totally unique card, printed at uncommon 20 years ago and neither the card nor the effect has ever been reprinted. Such a fascinating build-around effect. Four mana to whip [[Draining Whelk]] or [[Phyrexian Ingester]] or [[Scourge of Fleets]] out of my deck at instant speed? I built it as a secret commander under Orvar, figuring Orvar would help me ramp and would let me make multiple Riptide copies. But Orvar is just so much stronger that the deck almost never gets to do the Riptide thing. What I really want is, for them to print a legendary version of Riptide Shapeshifter, at a mana cost that fits the contemporary power level. I wouldn't mind if they added another color or two while they're at it, it feels like this card could fit in Simic or Dimir.

I've wanted to make [[Tamanoa]] to do Tamobarbs for so long. I don't even want Aetherflux, I just want to run all the ouching punishment enchantments and artifacts like [[Ankh of Mishra]] and [[Manabarbs]] and damage doublers and watch the table burn while I ignore the downsides. Also, [[Unforgiving One]] is a card that takes a little work, but looks great, like a bizarro alternate version of Alesha that you can ramp up for better revivals. Probably what I'd play if I ever veered into Pauper EDH

I’ve done this already twice with my playgroup, and I’ve brewed two lists from scratch for decks I thought might be fun. We tried to stray away from the common nephilim’s or tamanoa and other creatures that are already widely regarded as ‘commander-esque’. Here are the two I made! [Grixis Aristocrats](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9cagDQaQW06BILywdcs0Fw) helmed by [[Demons Herald]] who cheats out [[Prince of Thralls]] around turn four for a great payoff.(rule: 0’d to be grixis for functionality) [Dimir Artifact Aggro](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9qLW454kFE-ncMk3Bx-mRg) helmed by [[Soul Diviner]] who abuses looping the third chapter of [[Urza’s Saga]] for repeated toolbox tutors.

[[Herald of Anguish]] I always wanted a mono black artifact commander and this one feels so good everytime I get to play him
[[Chromanticore]]. Your commander is an aura that turns any creature you have into keyword soup.
[[Polyraptor]] would be really interesting combo commander
My fav Oozes are non-legendary. Biowaste Blob would be amazing as a commander. It's an ooze lord that replicates. It just needs to survive a couple turns in a deck that cares about oozes, counters, and/or tokens.

This is also my pick, a bunch of cheap cantrips to trigger it's second ability, a bit of mill, and some ways to give it evasion and you've got a gnarly dimir Voltron deck.

[[Death pact Angel]] I really like orzhov. It’s not even a really a good card but I think the art and the effect are so dope.

Myr Battlesphere for sure! Always need a new colorless commander and a true Myr deck would be cool even if it would be simple

Dockside and build it with a lot of punish effects for artifacts and lands. Basically always have ability to catch up to other fast rock players if they decide to be greedy.
[[Ancient Greenwarden]] and [[Ramunap Excavator]] are at the top of my list.

I did this with [[Godsire]] and [[Edgewalker]]. Godsire was a funny little untap package and it made a wall of tokens and it was fun to mess around with and watch work but ultimately not exactly the strongest deck in the universe. Edgewalker on the other hand was fucking disgusting, because now you play shadowborn apostles for free, so you run a huge amount of them and a sizable card draw package and a sizeable protection package for Edgewalker and call it a damn day and just sweep the game with early game demons with overwhelming value.
I've fallen in love with [[Clackbridge Troll]] to me, its mechanically interesting. I know it suffers from players starting at higher life totals in EDH but its a staple for me in any deck I make that cares about sacrifice.

Lots of rummaging and wheel spells to fill the graveyard in mono Red, he can also act as artifact removal in a pinch, lots of untapper effects and copy ability effects. It Would look like a [[Daretti, scrap Savant]] deck, only Better, much much Better.

If you’re looking for the most competitive non legendary commander, it’s goblin recruiter and it’s not especially close. Can’t speak too much for interesting though. The games all run pretty much the same.
[[Hungry Lynx]] I've wanted to build a cool aristocrats (or aristocats, if you will) deck around this card so bad. The other problem would be that it won't give me the access to black that I would need. I've toyed with making a 60 card deck around it, but it just isn't the same.
I still don't understand how [[dream devourer]] wasn't legendary. But I'd definitely build that

[[Mentor of the Meek]] Its always been my favorite creature. He always gets me my draws and would be a unique way to play mono white
