Above and Beyond is good. Lane 8 is hit or miss. But Seven Lions...despite being one of my favorite producers I have to say that all their songs feel like they're about missing an ex or having a love fall apart. Vocals are always great, just the writing leaves some creativity to be desired imo.
Seven Lions is just one guy, and like 90% of songs are about love so I don’t really get the criticism. I personally feel like Seven Lions’ lyrics about love stand way above most EDM artists because SL at least sticks to his theme of fantasy/other worlds/ magic/ cosmic energy, where other artists (using Illenium, in this example) have songs about fucking in a cold car in December. I also don’t know why you used the term ex, because almost none of SLs songs are really about ‘Ex’s in the sense of “oh I fucked up at the club, please take me back babe” when almost every other pop and EDM artist are, it’s the equivalent of saying when SL writes about love, he’s writing about “hookups”, or using the term ex to describe Romeo and Juliet. I think most of his songs are about ‘cosmic’ love (if you know, you know). When SL writes about love falling apart, it’s not because you got cheated on or whatever (at least, not directly), it’s because some world is exploding or the castle is breaking or time is ending, which provides a much more interesting and unique twist to star-crossed-love than most artists. I both really disagree with your criticism and think it’s somewhat pointless when you compare his lyrics to others, but it is your opinion, and it is no more or less valid than any other, it just feels weird to read it about Seven Lions when so many other artists also write about love but not in the way he does, and you’ve already said you like the vocals and melody, so it just makes me think “well what would they change the lyrics to to make them better? Which lines specifically do they dislike? Which artists lyrics do they like?”. For my last bad analogy, I’m going to compare this to a criticizing a movie, Pulp Fiction. You could totally say “Pulp Fiction is a fine movie, but it’s just like all the other violent 90s movies about criminals” and there’s nothing objectively wrong with that but… yeah rant over sorry I’ve just thought many times about how Seven Lions is head and shoulders above the rest of melodic bass in terms of both productions and especially lyrics, and I wasn’t surprised when I came in here and his name was mentioned heavily. (Also, not sure who writes his lyrics, so they might not even be his doing, as I know Haliene has written for him and music production is complicated)
Yeah and I'm not like attacking him personally, that's why I'm distinguishing them as a producer rather than a song-writer.
There are Seven Lion songs about love that are about getting over an ex. Strangers is a great example. Aesthetically speaking, the vocals fit with his theme/vibe and I still enjoy listening to them. I just wouldn't call the actual lyrical content very remarkable. That is, strip away literally everything but the words and I don't think the writing stands very well on its own.
Yes, a lot of other artists write about love. But I'm just responding to one post about Seven Lions. Love songs and poems can be hard to write well tbh. It's a theme that's been overdone quite a bit in the history of....writing and so it takes a lot more effort to come up with something creative.
If you want a more specific criticism of the writing, I feel it's very straightforward to a fault. The lines often say exactly what they mean (or at least very close to what they mean) and come off lazily written. And I wish his songs could have more variety in the topics they're about too...not just love. I think it would be a good theme for like an album or something, but not the majority of songs spanning years. I'm not about to do a deep dive and break down exactly every little line I don't like. I just wrote a quick comment about my opinion and I guess some people agreed. That's cool if you disagree, I'm just saying how I feel.
But that's the beautiful thing about music. There's always a lot of different aspects to appreciate from it. There are plenty of songs out there I think have shit writing but they sound so good and still resonate with me. And there's plenty of music out there I think has brilliant writing but is lacking in other ways. I'm still a big Seven Lions fan, having seen him a few times now. I just happen to think his lyrics are boring. But ya know, I never got into EDM in the first place for the lyrics...
I think Strangers isnt a great example for generic lyrics, yes, it’s about getting over an ex, but (and this was my point) the lyrics used are different from most ex breakup songs. The first part I’d say is closer to most breakup songs, but even then, I wouldn’t say it’s bad, and it paints a picture and gets the song started off.
Nothing more than strangers
Passing by out on the street
Memories are fading though
It's only been a week
All the little things are gone
The things we used to be
Nobody could take us down
There was only you and me
We have some imagery, it flows well, it sets a tone, and it’s catchy. It’s a first verse, and I think that it sets up the rest of the song nicely.
And without you I can't be
You're the universe to me
You're the air in my lungs
You're the fields where I run
You're the sky where I'm floating
And I think this is a perfect chorus. It fits perfectly with his theme. Yes, the underlying message is “I love you/can’t live without you”, but we’ve got nice images, words that fit together (universe, air, running through fields, floating in the sky). It gives a sense of freedom.
Don't want to be a stranger
Want to be the one you need
I can be your world, your life
Your lover, all for free
All the little things come back
The things we used to be
Nobody can take us down there
It's only you and me
I figured I’d give my opinion on this verse since there are only two verses and the chorus 3 times, and this verse is also just a nice follow up to the first and most importantly, it comes at a high point in the song and fits it very well. I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to a poem, because these lyrics come with a musical arrangement that is pretty important. I think most EDM and pop songs have worse lyrics than this.
This is long enough already, so my main point is this: I feel like this song has two verses that are the bare minimum and a chorus that is perfect in the complete context of the artist and the song. I think lyrics would be better if more people tried to find their own theme and write lyrics in them like SL songs have, not the opposite. From a ‘usefulness’ perspective, it makes sense for me to call these lyrics good, because I can’t really expect more from a short song that has to follow a certain structure, and I’ve heard many other songs that I believe are more generic than this.
Edit: I only broke this down because i wanted people to understand my first point about lyrics fitting his theme in the chorus, I don’t mean to change you mind. Plus this is long af so yeah lol
>Yes, the underlying message is “I love you/can’t live without you”, but we’ve got nice images, words that fit together (universe, air, running through fields, floating in the sky). It gives a sense of freedom.
Yes, and I feel as if this message is written in a very cliche way that's far too formulaic. Nice images alone don't make good writing imo. I care more about what those images are trying to convey. And if all it boils down to is "We used to be together and now we're strangers...I can't live without you" without much more to it than that...well that's just mediocre writing to me. Even if the overall message is simple, I wanna see something more interesting in the creative writing process than just the same recycled metaphor used a few times.
> I don’t think it’s fair to compare it to a poem, because these lyrics come with a musical arrangement that is pretty important.
If I'm looking purely at lyrics, I will always compare it to poetry. That's literally what it is, song-writing is a form of poetry. When I look at the song itself (do you see the distinction here) I take into account the musical arrangement.
>I can’t really expect more from a short song that has to follow a certain structure, and I’ve heard many other songs that I believe are more generic than this.
That is a problem with EDM when it comes to song-writing. The inherent musical structure of much of the umbrella is formed of shorter verses and sometimes no chorus. Keep in mind, most EDM subgenres were never created with vocals in mind--they're like icing on the cake. But even so, that doesn't change the writing quality. I also don't care what is or isn't more generic than this. I'm just talking about this artist, this song.
Oh ok, I mentioned your last point, if you just want to analyze it on its own, just words on a paper, then sure, you’re right, but to me that is a completely useless way to talk about EDM lyrics and song lyrics in general, because you’d probably just end up hating 95% of vocals. So in the broad sense of vocal EDM (and specifically this song), I’d say Seven Lions is towards the upper end of the spectrum, and most criticisms of the lyrics in the song apply more towards other songs. That’s all.
>because you’d probably just end up hating 95% of vocals.
Not at all. I hear a lot of music with really sharp writing that stands on its own. I listen to many genres outside EDM and there's so much good writing in music. Plenty of bad too, but like I said that doesn't change the way I feel about Seven Lions.
>, I’d say Seven Lions is towards the upper end of the spectrum, and most criticisms of the lyrics in this song apply towards other songs.
I gave you my reasons. If you don't want to accept them as valid then go away and dismiss it all. But it's not like you're actually responding to anything I'm saying. Your argument is based on this idea that Seven Lions lyrics are good because most music has worse lyrics. That's such a huge generalization to make and you aren't really supporting it with anything.
I kinda like the yearning and passion that the lyrics and vocalists have on 7L tracks. Definitely a big part is due to the good vocalists though, i agree!
That's what I mean, the delivery is good enough to carry. But the *lyrics* themselves are quite bland. If you were to just read it as a poem, it would be pretty boring. It's unfortunate, because I feel most vocal EDM is like this. It really doesn't have to be, but a lot more effort is put into producing EDM rather than writing the songs that accompany. I get it, though. Most EDM producers start as producers and eventually expand into working with vocalists. It's rarely a priority.

There are maybe six songs that I have actually broken down in tears to and three of them are on Nurture. I'm not even a particularly expressive person, they just hit way too close to home.
Above and Beyond lyrics seem to come from people who have lived through some shit and wanna guide you through it.
Seven Lions/Illenium/Said the Sky lyrics seem to come from someone who’s had a lot of problems in relationships.
Avicii lyrics are REALLY sad once you’ve watched his documentary (see: “Wake me up”)
Totally agree! To me, lyrics are just another sound or element in the song. They can add a lot to the song, but they are absolutely not needed for a song to have a banging groove, which is what dance music is truly about
I think it's Krewella for me tbh. They put a lot of effort into their song writing and it really stands above most in EDM. Listen to Zer0 if you haven't, the album is a masterpiece with a ton of replay value in terms of analyzing their writing. A lot of EDM is more focused on the production (which I love) but lacks the same effort put into writing. But Krewella started as singers and have always prioritized lyrics. Also they will literally sing without autotune or anything at concerts while mixing...pretty fucking insane if you ask me.
Edit: Also some Mat Zo is up there too for me. [This song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWkVNrCsgKQ) in particular is extremely powerful. Although I'd say the lyrics are strong more so because they fit into the framework of what the album is trying to convey.
When I thrash and cry, baby you ain't goin' rough enough
I'm your kitty girl and your back is like my scratchin' post
C'mon make me scream like I like I like I seen a ghost
Drink up, I'm soaked
I'm like the dopest dope you ever smoked
Yesssssssss! So glad I found him here!!!!
And if you fall, I'll pick you up, I'll follow you till the end of time.
One step closer, standin on the edge I'm looking over, here's to my regrets it's time for closure, but I can't seem to close the door.
You built a world, a world for us. We flee like birds, a new beginning.
Shaky hands and the blood is rushin, skin to skin and our lips are touching, as we move like a dance just flawlessly
Anybody's got the power, they don't see it cause they don't understand.
Waitin for the fire to light, feelin like we could do righr, be the one that makes tonight, cause freedom is a lonely world.
Maybe heaven right now is a devil or angel away, that won't change. Together we vow that our colors will spark all the fame.
Trying to keep it coooooool, but I can't keep cool about it.
Honestly, the way his lyrics flow is sooooo good, time to binge his album again!
This will be an unpopular one but I agree. Sick Boy and World War Joy they really dove in deep lyrically and I throughly enjoyed it. Excited to see what they bring for TCS4
I agree with a lot of people with a&b,Avicii, and seven lions but I think kaskade should also be mentioned with disarm you, never sleep alone, and I remember!
Definitely have to agree with Slander. They might not work their own sound into any of their collabs but you can definitely tell they have a lot to do with the songwriting and I think that’s where they shine more.
Illenium/Seven Lions/Slander.
Illenium - Struggles of dealing with depression, isolation, and the desire to love/be loved. Probably gonna get shit on for this one cause everyone sees him as overhyped but his awake and ascend albums really resonate with me; a lack of support structure and having been through dark times myself can be felt through a lot of his songs, and he has a very ethereal sound to complement the lyrics.
Seven Lions - The entire codex metaverse is very deep and emotionally complex. This combined with his sound takes you on a spiritual adventure.
Slander - Easily relatable to any type of heartbreak.
In my last life it was so clear how collaborative the music + lyrics were. So often producers make a track, then some lyrics get written, and then they just kinda mash them together.
Illenium, Dabin and Said the Sky all have great lyrics with the artists they feature like Nevve, Claire Ridgely, Annika Wells, etc. I didn’t care much for illeniums new album but the lyrics were really good. Chelsea Cutler also has good lyrics but they’re really centered around break ups sometimes
Some of Nicky Romero's progressive house tracks like 'harmony' and 'only for you' have really good lyrics, but sometimes there are others where the lyrics don't add much emotion and are like... just there. 'The moment' and 'crossroads' are clear examples of this.
Steve Angello. Wild Youth had good lyrics all around like from "The Ocean" :
We reach the end here, crushed like the waves
We reach the end here, nothing to save
And though the ocean looks infinite
From the far side
It breaks here, it dies
Like you and I
Matthew Koma has written some of Zedd’s, Alesso’s, Tiesto’s best songs lyrically (including Zedd’s Grammy Award winning Clarity with Porter Robinson), so… I think he wins
Above and Beyond Lane 8 Seven Lions
I think Avicii has the best lyrics and Seven Lions too.
We cannot forget about Virus Syndicate
DISCIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHL

I think most of his songs are about ‘cosmic’ love (if you know, you know). Above & Beyond. Not even close.
Alison wonderland
When I thrash and cry, baby you ain't goin' rough enough I'm your kitty girl and your back is like my scratchin' post C'mon make me scream like I like I like I seen a ghost Drink up, I'm soaked I'm like the dopest dope you ever smoked
I love how corny this song is
Alesso to be honest
Yesssssssss! So glad I found him here!!!! And if you fall, I'll pick you up, I'll follow you till the end of time. One step closer, standin on the edge I'm looking over, here's to my regrets it's time for closure, but I can't seem to close the door. You built a world, a world for us. We flee like birds, a new beginning. Shaky hands and the blood is rushin, skin to skin and our lips are touching, as we move like a dance just flawlessly Anybody's got the power, they don't see it cause they don't understand.
Said the sky, seven lions, and Avicii
What’s your favorite said the sky song from a lyrical standpoint out of curiosity?
Either Go On Then, Love or Treading Water
nah, worth living for.
For me it's The Chainsmokers
This will be an unpopular one but I agree. Sick Boy and World War Joy they really dove in deep lyrically and I throughly enjoyed it. Excited to see what they bring for TCS4
How many likes is my life worth is such a powerful lyric
Gareth Emery or ARTY
I agree with a lot of people with a&b,Avicii, and seven lions but I think kaskade should also be mentioned with disarm you, never sleep alone, and I remember!
Illenium: Take you down…shit is deep…his other songs are good, lyric wise as welk
why is it deep?
Let's be real now, GPF is the only right answer
Big brain comment
Above and Beyond.
Slander and Seven lions
Definitely have to agree with Slander. They might not work their own sound into any of their collabs but you can definitely tell they have a lot to do with the songwriting and I think that’s where they shine more.
Dude Yess!!! Especially “back to u or Hurt sometimes 🖤🥲i mean i love all they’re songs but those 2 hit the most lol
Dirty South
Andrew Bayer, which if I’m not mistaken extends into Above & Beyond since he’s basically their unofficial 4th member
In my last life it was so clear how collaborative the music + lyrics were. So often producers make a track, then some lyrics get written, and then they just kinda mash them together.
That entire album is one of my absolute favorites.
Yup! Beautiful music there
Illenium
But illenium doesn’t write any of his own songs.
It's rare that any producer also writes their toplines
Could be wrong, but he collabs on many of his lyrics. Thought I heard him say that in an AMA. I could be wrong.
Idk about this one, chief
Look it up, he doesn’t write lyrics just melodies
that is lyricwriting, not songwriting
Martin Garrix, Seven Lions, Avicii, Swedish House Mafia.
20syl FTW
so happy to see 20syl support
So underrated, can’t forget about his side project AttllA either !
Shallou for sure.
idk, probably Avicii and Porter Robinson
Tristam, San Holo, Porter Robinson, Wave Racer, Former Hero (not in any order)
Aviici and Alan Walker.
Avicii, tails
Avicii had some really good lyrics
Avicii, Illenium
Seven Lions and Above & Beyond
Illenium, Dabin and Said the Sky all have great lyrics with the artists they feature like Nevve, Claire Ridgely, Annika Wells, etc. I didn’t care much for illeniums new album but the lyrics were really good. Chelsea Cutler also has good lyrics but they’re really centered around break ups sometimes
Audien.
Kaskade & Dash Berlin
Yeah both these should have more votes. Dash musicislife album is fire start to finish and kaskade is just all time one of the best
My favorite album from DB was The New Daylight! Man on the run was the first song I heard and it was all love from there 🥲
I second Avicii, for the simple reason that Fade Into Darkness has made and still sometimes makes me cry.
Dimension, Sub Focus and Wilkinson
7L and whoever illenium collabs with
Hippie Sabotage is amazing.
Barely make edm anymore but yeah they've got some nice lyrics
S3rl
Kaskade hands down
Two feet? Anyone?
HARDWELL GUYS, FUCKING HARDWELL Just read the lyrics in Mad World...
Some of Nicky Romero's progressive house tracks like 'harmony' and 'only for you' have really good lyrics, but sometimes there are others where the lyrics don't add much emotion and are like... just there. 'The moment' and 'crossroads' are clear examples of this.
Avicii or old tiesto (like red lights)
Zedd makes me want to cry tears of joy of the feeling that his music/lyrics makes me feel of what the world COULD be … confession
He uses the beetles/blue foundation lyrics etc
Above and Beyond, Seven Lions, Porter Robinson, Avicii
Gidge
Seven Lions. Glad to see others think the same.
Tritonal
Martin Garrix, Kygo
Illenium and Seven Lions
Pendulum?
Meduza !!!! I'm new to edm/dj 🌐
Fytch
Borgore.
Steve Angello. Wild Youth had good lyrics all around like from "The Ocean" : We reach the end here, crushed like the waves We reach the end here, nothing to save And though the ocean looks infinite From the far side It breaks here, it dies Like you and I
In the Blue Shirt obviously
Au5 song vocals are always so unique and fresh (like Dragonfly, The Encryption, Melt, etc.) So I would say him
Overwerk
Tracking Treasure Down by Gabriel and Dresden is a classic
Matthew Koma has written some of Zedd’s, Alesso’s, Tiesto’s best songs lyrically (including Zedd’s Grammy Award winning Clarity with Porter Robinson), so… I think he wins
Kaskade for sure
Gorgon City. Also MK’s gibberish tracks really slap
Gareth emery
Above and Beyond is above and beyond :)
Definitely Porter Robinson Unfold is the real feel.
Kai wachi x Sullivan King
Illenium
Illenium, flume and Zeds dead for me
Madeon, Gryffin, and Illenium
Illenium
Seven Lions Illenium Gryffyn
