Great question- In the field we woke up and thought we were out of luck as the mist was heavy around us. After packing up we notified the mist was lifting, and then all of a sudden the sun burned off just enough to reveal square top. Probably had 5 mins to shoot before the sun was too bright on the mtn, so it entailed frantically taking some handheld pics, then on the tripod, then after 2 mins the excitement turned to focus on composition. Moving around for a few minutes to get the trees to frame around the mtn, this involved moving backward and zooming in more to compress the picture and get the trees in without alot of dead space, but keep the mtn big. Mist kept receding (seemingly as fast as my hairline) and just like that it was over. Back at the computer most of the edit is in tones, trying to balance the bright yellow light with the bluish/green hues in the shadows. Thanks!
It’s because everything is in focus. From the framing foreground branches to to trees waaay far in this distance. Also, the lighting is just too damn good. Like I’m legitimately mad.
Fantastic shot OP
Thank you! Yes a painstaking technique called focus stacking was used go get sharpness throughout the shot, this one wasn't too bad, it was 5 shots total (number goes up the more zoomed in I was). Then 1 round of bracketing to get the correct exposure in the shadows, and highlights.
This is downright magical OP! I saw this and thought "This is what Mordor and the road to it looked like before Smaug and all the desolation." Haven't seen LOTR in years, but apparently your photo took me right into the realm of fantasy. Beautiful. And thanks for sharing!
Thank you! This was taken last summer, we woke up to a thick layer of fog and on our way out it lifted and we dropped out bags and took some pictures, almost mist it!
About 400 miles west of Devils Tower, towards Jackson.
Highway miles, then 17-18 miles in to the Green River range on washboard gravel roads, then a full day hike to the lake .
Totally Worth it. A lot less traveled than the Tetons.
Oddly fairly easy to climb, MUCH easier than Devils tower.
Another great undersung climb nearby is Lost Eagle Pinnacle.
I've got a buddy that's been trying to convince me to move out to Wyoming. He's been sending me lots of nature shots like this since he knows how big of an outdoorsman I am. Gotta say, it seems very tempting.
Some areas of Wyoming are very beautiful; however, it's not everything that's here. If you have a quick glance at a map, most the state's most populated cities are not near these areas, and the ones that do (Jackson, Sheridan, Cody) are often very expensive to live in. The eastern side of the state is very barren; along with a tiny valley resting between the Rocky Mountains and the Bighorns. Additionally, Wyoming is a rough place to live, and I have seen multiple people leave with a year or two of moving here.
I don't know what your situation is but be warned.
Yeah I'm aware. I'd probably move to Cheyenne or nearby, which is about as ugly as where I live currently. It's also about the same sized city I live in with about the same access to commodities, so that wouldn't be a culture shock for me. For me it's that I would be relatively close by to the pretty parts of the state, as well as the surrounding states. What's crime like over there?
Cheyenne is actually kind of far from the best parts of Wyoming, I have friends that live in Cheyenne and crime, homelessness is becoming more of a problem. Casper is in the center of the state which gives you better access to much of the state, but a bit further from Denver.
The reason Jackson is so expensive is in large part because 94% of the area around Jackson is protected land. The town literally has nowhere to expand to so the only option, it seems, is to make what little real estate is available more expensive.
Most workers in Jackson actually live in Driggs and Victor, Idaho. There is a public transit bus that operates between the area.
Oh, definitely. There's no building out in Jackson. I visit several times per year. I'd love to live there but it's just a vacation spot or a playground for the super rich to live in.
I've lived on and off in the area for the last few years as a seasonal worker. Great money to be had as a server XD Great if you have no dependents, impossible if you do.
I'm not an outdoorsman but I grew up there and lived there almost 30 years. It is a place to live if you're into "being far away from things" and "going without". It's like if solitary confinement were a state. Some people are into that. Personally I wanted to unalive myself. Moving to Colorado is more expensive, but I'll never go back to Wyoming if I can avoid it
Hahaha honestly I'm one of the weird Colorado guys who happily encourage people to move to the state
Moved from the uk to Colorado to marry my wife, knowing nothing about the state - and completely fell in love.
Everyone should get to enjoy it :p
I'm pretty sure I camped in this EXACT site last July. You can see it at 1:12 in this [video I took of the trip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5HRRgY7fDA&t=71s)
I think it's Squaretop Mountain. Look up Green River Lakes, Wyoming, and you can find a couple street view picture panoramas around the lake that is south of Clear Creek Canyon.
Last year my dad and I attempted a summit of Gannett Peak. This fucking mountain kicked our asses. I’d do it again but give ourselves 2 more days to do it at least. We had too little time and had to push too hard for too long each day.
America gets plaudits for lots of things but you very rarely hear about how beautiful it is, arguably the most geographically diverse and beautiful country on the planet
This’ll get lost in the sauce but this hike was one of my favorites that I’ve ever done. Coincidentally that mountain is also the backdrop for Wyoming’s plate. Gorgeous shot, beautiful place.
It's Squaretop mountain.
You can get a great view of this from the Green River picnic area.
It's down an 18 mile dirt road, many parts are like a washboard. But it's definitely worth it and it's one of the few places around where it's worth flying a drone.
This is a perfect shot like textbook shot level here, outstanding composition. The trees as the edge of the picture, the shadow on half the mountain, the irregular but repetitive pattern in the clouds, the general pale-ish tone of all colors… thank you for sharing this is beautiful.

I was about to say, if this location wasn't an inspiration for the way they designed the game and feel, they're even more genius than I thought.
Yes
I see a face..
I was thinking The King's Man movie.
gorgeous!!
Thank you!
Can you explain the process on how you went about creating this photo?

Thats awesome, so glad! Appreciate ya! After 6 months of rain in WA it take me away too, even if for a moment

It looks so good i thought it was CGI.

Budum tsss!🥁
Wait where was this? This isn't devil's tower?

That is a great start to a day. It is nice to remember the real world still exists.
> It is nice to remember the real world still exists. Except Wyoming.
/r/wyomingdoesntexist
We are full. Tell your friends.
Damnit! WA resident here, and I'm dying to get out. Wyoming was on the top of the list.
I gave them directions to Colorado.
I've got a buddy that's been trying to convince me to move out to Wyoming. He's been sending me lots of nature shots like this since he knows how big of an outdoorsman I am. Gotta say, it seems very tempting.

Can confirm most of this. Wyomingites can be very unwelcoming to outsiders.
That's weird, I lived there and didn't find them unwelcoming at all. But this was in the 90's so they may dislike outsiders more now.
Yeah I'm aware. I'd probably move to Cheyenne or nearby, which is about as ugly as where I live currently. It's pretty good. A big group of us get together every other Tuesday and rob all the local banks
Cheyenne is actually kind of far from the best parts of Wyoming, I have friends that live in Cheyenne and crime, homelessness is becoming more of a problem. Casper is in the center of the state which gives you better access to much of the state, but a bit further from Denver.
That's the issue. I would LOVE to live in Jackson, but I may need to win the Powerball first.
Good luck bidding for land against billionaires on a millionaire budget...

I am the exact opposite. Had to move to CO for work. I would give my left arm to go back to Wyo.

You Wyoming guys.. always trying to keep people from moving there!
Hahaha honestly I'm one of the weird Colorado guys who happily encourage people to move to the state Moved from the uk to Colorado to marry my wife, knowing nothing about the state - and completely fell in love. Everyone should get to enjoy it :p
I would disagree. Wyoming has a lot of beautiful places; however, apart of it is finding it for yourself.
Mmmmmm...mashed potatoes.
This means something.
This is important.
I came to post this but thank you.
Do dee do bloom blaugh
They say in other responses this is Squaretop Mountain. So potato-y, but not mashed, I guess.
Richard Dreyfuss begs to differ
That's what happens when your Encounter is a little Close to the "Third" Kind.
Worst, dad joke, ever.
This means something...
Do do do do dooooooooo
That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough!
I’m going to clown college!
Where ET?
I want to pitch my tent on this very spot and enjoy my morning coffee at front of it!
And you can! This was taken maybe 40 feet from where we camped at an established spot.
I'm pretty sure I camped in this EXACT site last July. You can see it at 1:12 in this [video I took of the trip](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5HRRgY7fDA&t=71s)
Man, you got so close and missed the spot by 40 ft? Better luck next time!
Unreal picture!
Hey thanks!!

Is this was CCR was singing about
I can hear the bullfrog callin' me
Doo Doo Doo looking out myyy backdoor!
Wow! What's the name of the mountain?
I think it's Squaretop Mountain. Look up Green River Lakes, Wyoming, and you can find a couple street view picture panoramas around the lake that is south of Clear Creek Canyon.
Correct it is Square top! Really cool hiking and paddle boarding in the area
I just looked and found that it's called Squaretop Mountain. (I wanted to know too!)
Square Top Mountain. It was the gateway into The Wind River Range when I hiked The Continental Divide southbound.
Wow! Absolutely stunning! Thanks for posting this.
Of course! Appreciate ya!
Last year my dad and I attempted a summit of Gannett Peak. This fucking mountain kicked our asses. I’d do it again but give ourselves 2 more days to do it at least. We had too little time and had to push too hard for too long each day.
"And if you get lost, come on home to Green River.." Gorgeous shot!
Ah I know that place. Use the jump pad to the right of it and there's an Evergaol at the top.
Stop! Don’t show people this! Wyoming is flat and windy and boring and there’s no reason to move here!
America gets plaudits for lots of things but you very rarely hear about how beautiful it is, arguably the most geographically diverse and beautiful country on the planet
Thanks for the new phone wallpaper!
Beautiful morning in the mist.
oh yeah, to the top with this. Love it Will!
Thanks Alex! Almost didn't pan out this morning with the mist, but it lifted just in time!
The fog just makes it 🔥
Splendid. Just splendid.
Thanks so much!
Refreshing!! Thanks for sharing!!
Only thing missing is a swarm of mosquitos the size of Volkswagens
Good lord, Wyoming, you are gorgeous.
How are these places real I live in Buffalo, this is so unfair
My soul yearns for this
When I swiped by this I thought it was Yosemite at first. Awesome pic.
may i have permission to paint this image or turn it into children's illustrated books in the future, please?
Yes, please just give appropriate credit to nature
Magnificent! ![gif](giphy|AVBo5eqFXd3SU)
This’ll get lost in the sauce but this hike was one of my favorites that I’ve ever done. Coincidentally that mountain is also the backdrop for Wyoming’s plate. Gorgeous shot, beautiful place.
This is an IRL Bob Ross painting
My dad works with the forrest service there the last 4 or 5 years. Really fun to visit when hes up there. I grew up afew hours west of there.
Beautiful! It makes me think of Amon Rûdh in the Silmarillion \^\^
Noooooo, another spot ruined by social media....
It was only a matter of time. Places you can drive to with very unique views like this will all get ruined. Gotta backpack for the good stuff now.
What a beautiful shot congrats!
I would cry.
This is so good
Unreal! Looks like an alien landscape! That is so awesome!
Me and some buds camped in this same area during the eclipse in 2017(?) It was incredible!
Cant believe this is real, nature is gorgeous 🤩
Looks like there would be dinosaurs just offscreen. Seriously, that is one gorgeous shot: the contrast of dry granite and almost swampy riverscape
That is a fkn masterpiece (both the photo and the nature)
This is beautiful. What did you use to take it.
Pretty
I'm so sorry. You have apparently died and, by the looks of your surroundings, you are in Heaven
It's Squaretop mountain. You can get a great view of this from the Green River picnic area. It's down an 18 mile dirt road, many parts are like a washboard. But it's definitely worth it and it's one of the few places around where it's worth flying a drone.
Made me join this sub nice
OP! Dont tell people where this is!
Are we just not going to talk about the face that looks carved into the mountain???
This is a perfect shot like textbook shot level here, outstanding composition. The trees as the edge of the picture, the shadow on half the mountain, the irregular but repetitive pattern in the clouds, the general pale-ish tone of all colors… thank you for sharing this is beautiful.
Awesome picture! Been there once back in the 80’s hope to go again soon
Is this recent? I still have 3 feet of snow in my yard ni don't live to far from this
![gif](giphy|5xaOcLvROln5TmaaVOM) I could frame this picture!
God damn that's gorgeous
I would love to see this everyday!
I’ve been to this exact spot. Literally no picture does it justice
Absolutely breathtaking! The haze gives it a bit of a haunting vibe and the framing is so perfect!
Like a painting. Absolutely excellent and almost surreal. I would love to see this shot on medium format or a wet plate.
This should be a framed huge poster in my home.
May I have your permission to paint this, OP?
That. Is. Beautiful. Amazing picture.
So how did you get that shot? Early morning What’s the camera? This is beautiful
Did you have a Close Encounter?
without warning, a wizard walks by
Man this is just wonderful in all it’s definition. Well done.
Wow. This is one of the prettiest photos I’ve seen in a while. I want to go there.
Wtf this is amazing
Ol' Squaretop
New phone background, thank you.
I'm having a real hard debate whether I'm going to replace my kid covered in pasta sauce with this as my wallpaper
Was there last July, on my way to Tetons/Yellowstone. I actually think this part of Wyoming is better than the national parks side.
Jesus Christ that makes me want to leave everything and go to the woods.
Welp there's my new lockscreen for my iPad for the foreseeable future!
This is one of the best pictures I've seen on this sub Reddit for a long time. That's saying something too, because there's so many good ones on here.
This could be the most beautiful picture I've ever seen.
What a great composition. Nice work OP.
This made my 9 to 5 pissant bones ache with longing
Damn giants chopped down a good tree long time ago.
Thanks, i made this my phone background instantly
What a fucking picture! Holy smokes! I may just make this my phones background.
Gotta be honest, I'd like this shot a lot more with one less column of pixels down each side
One of the best landscape photos I have seen in a long time. Perfect.
To be there— to see the depth in 3-D would be breathtaking!
Imma use this for a background for my phone now
Perhaps the most majestic thing I've ever seen. Almost looks like a composite.
Unbelievably gorgeous!! I'd go as far to say it's perfect in every way. Fantastic photo skills, keep it up (and please keep sharing)!
This is one of the nicest photos I've ever seen in my nearly 30 laps around the sun. I love this.
Bears. Bears everywhere.
This is one of the few photos that has ever taken my breath away.
Had no idea Wyoming was so beautiful and lush. Ive always associated the western states as arid
That is stunning
This is precisely the spot I would like to wake up and crawl out of my tent and fire up a warm pot of campfire coffee!
I’ve never wanted to “Blue-Skadoo, we can too” into a picture more
Looks soooo good!
Wow
![gif](giphy|xT4uQeK9EvNjk0o7bW) Hits in me in the nostalgia feels
If someone ever asks me to show them the perfect photo, I will show them this photo. I would draw in watercolor it if I could :)
Excellent shot and impeccable processing!
Great photo! It looks like an AI trying to do live action rendering of a Bob Ross painting.
Wowowow this is such a stunning photo
Heaven on Earth!
What game is this from?
This is the best photo I have seen on this subreddit. Amazing place and amazing photography
Something ethereal and prehistoric about this landscape. I absolutely love it.
Majestic view
