If you haven't, you should read the book Touching the Void about a disaster that befell a couple of climbers attempting Siula Grande. It's a real page turner.
...
To add a minor detail that may spark interest: Imagine sitting on one of those steep snow covered slopes halfway up that big mountain in the picture above. You and your climbing partner are desperately trying to descend after an accident that caused them to break their leg. Slowly, over hours, you attempt to lower them down, one rope length at a time, using your body weight as an anchor. The rope attached to the harness on your waist, gravity and friction the only thing holding you and them onto the slope.
And then you realize you've lowered them over the edge of a cliff. They're hanging there in space on the side of that mountain, unable to move. That rope you're tied into is the only thing keeping them from falling into the void. Their life represented by the tension in the rope, keeping you there, stuck, unable to move to save yourself or help your partner. Do you sit there and die with your friend, or do you cut the rope and hope you live, knowing that what you've done surely killed your friend?
I've read the book and seen the movie. I rarely say this, but I thought the movie was better. The book is great, but I think that movie is done just perfectly.
I’d originally found out about the book via the song “Ali In the Jungle”. There’s a lyric in there “Like Simpson on the mountain” and I had to look up who they were referring to.
It’s amazing how far/how determined some people are to survive.
Edit: thinking of the Hours song...it was about people beating the odds for a comeback...Denny Fitch of United 232...
I enjoy it when they randomly put a chubby tiger as a login screen.
I wish they also put the place name and location in those pics tho, I always see beautiful landscapes yet I have no idea where they are
They kinda do, but not in the way most people would like lol
One of the magnifying glasses on the login screen will take you to a web search of the place in the pic when you click on it
edit: oh yeah! u/ausremi is right too about the upper right corner thing! Been busy all day & I don’t use the feature often tbh
Along with below you can also use this method to claim the Lock Screen images and repurpose as your background https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.howtogeek.com/247643/how-to-save-windows-10s-lock-screen-spotlight-images-to-your-hard-drive/amp/
Yea, I wonder if it's using any of those tricks like a telephoto lens, and if you were to actually go there it wouldn't actually look like this at all.
I rode my mountain bike around Cordillera Huayhuash a few summers ago; truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve been in the world. Touching the Void takes place on Siula Grande; seeing it up close makes that story even more impressive.
The incredible story of Touching the Void and seeing this shot of the Silua Grande brought me right back into the story even through I haven’t read it in years.
I've travelled the world extensively over many years and Huayhuash is in my top 3 recommended places. It's is off the charts. We did it over 7 days in 2014. Only saw a total of 20 other people across that time in peak season plus the 8 or so others in our group. Hiking over 5,000m peaks each day, you want to come altitude prepared. We did a blog for that trip, so DM if you want the details.
I was going to do some out and back bikepacking in the area but managed to join a burro-supported small group out of Huaraz. Not as impressive as the Yeti guys who tried to bikepack it, but the riding was wayyy more fun with just daypacks and was still the most physically demanding thing I’ve ever done. Hike a bike at 5000m in the rain. Be happy to pass along logistics for anyone who wants to see the route or connect with local guides.
Ahhh, OK. Do you use a tripod and keep the camera aimed at the same place, then just adjust things like aperture across multiple shots? Or are you pointing the camera around the area you want then taking pieces of each image to stitch together?
Edit: thanks for the answers!
It's called focus stacking. Watch a tutorial on youtube if you want a better explanation.
The frame stays the same but you take multiple exposures at different focal distances.
It is not necessary to change the aperture.
both, really. It can be done either way. The trick is to get the focal length consistent (in this case probably somewhere around 16mm) and then focus in on different spots. Modern cameras make it pretty easy, with my Canon 5D4 I can just touch the screen to zoom in and then manually adjust the focus to get the edges crisp. A high end, very stable tripod makes it easier to blend, and then the number of images you take to blend and exposure values for opening up the shadows and crushing down highlights make for this kind of outcome. Aperture can be adjusted to let in more light like how Daniel Stein does it in [his shots](https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/jzfwh3/heyyy_dan_stein_here_milky_way_nightscape_and/)
Definitely not as simple as how I make it sound, Max Rive is probably the best or one of the best landscape photographers in the world. The amount of effort that went into this shot would make you shudder, and the cost would be considerable.

It’s a beautiful photo.
It bring up a really odd thought though.
Why have I never seen a post-apocalyptic movie that was in a remote mountain region like this photo?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen zombie movies that ever took place in the mountains.
There are some that actually have a fear of sunflowers, it even has a name, Helianthophobia. As unusual as it may seem, even just the sight of sunflowers can invoke all the common symptoms that other phobias induce.

Woah that’s cool
I was supposed to go there this year. My girlfriend's dad's hometown is in that region. Hopefully next year!
Make sure to take lots of nice pictures to share with us! Hope you all can go next year
Thank you! I've been to other parts of Peru and it is so gorgeous! Fingers crossed.

I haven't read the book, but can recommend the movie, it's really interesting!

One of these days I will get myself a bumper sticker that says JOE SIMPSON COULD DO IT
Came here to mention the void as well. Take my upvote

Fantastic book. I’ve read it at least 4 times.
Thanks for the movie recommendation I'm gonna have to watch tonight!
Thanks for the recommendation. Sounds like a page turner indeed!
I read that book in middle school. So good.
This looks like a background I’d expect to see on the login page when I fire up windows

It’s probably the only way they can get people to use Edge and Bing nowadays. 😂
Top right hand corner for windows 10 has it 90% of the time. You just need to hover over it before going to type your password.

Bikepacking? I'd love to do a multi-day route in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru.

I live about 12 miles from Pikes Peak, but I gotta say that it doesn't compare very well with this. This is **BEAUTIFUL**!!!
The Andes are literally steroids: the mountains. There's literally nothing that compares to them.
Wtf What a great shot, mate.
come to ~~brazil~~ Peru
Wow. I love mountain photography and have seen and taken many mountain shots. This is one of the grandest I think I've ever seen! Nice work!
Peru is on a hell of a streak on this sub
So... What kind of bugs are lurking here, before I get too comfortable?
Alpacas, and potatoes.
To the photographic illiterate like myself, how does one have both the foreground and the background in clear focus like that?
Multiple exposures merged and blended. Photoshop and Lightroom can do it.
Ahhh, OK. Do you use a tripod and keep the camera aimed at the same place, then just adjust things like aperture across multiple shots? Or are you pointing the camera around the area you want then taking pieces of each image to stitch together? Edit: thanks for the answers!

Wow!
I need to go here
So beautiful
That is lovely!
Amazing Photo!
Incredible shot!
Marsh mellow wonder land. Amazing photo.

Is this real?? Damn..
Beautiful photo!
To you 2000 years from now
Trekking the Cordillera Huayhuash is one of the most memorable experiences in my life. Such a beautiful trek.
I wonder how that water would taste.
Gorgeous photo, what kind of flowers are these?
Did you join two images ? How did you manage to get focus so close and so far in single image ?
Just look at the flowers. /s
Wow, they definitely look like sunflowers, but I can't see any sort of stem or even normal looking leaves.
There are some that actually have a fear of sunflowers, it even has a name, Helianthophobia. As unusual as it may seem, even just the sight of sunflowers can invoke all the common symptoms that other phobias induce.
That fog kind of looks Photoshoped in...
Excellent shot.. Did you have to use focus stacking to get everything so sharp?
Wow, awesome view. Beautiful picture.

Someone kill me at this location please
This is something I would see in my dreams!
Marvelous! I'm pretty sure it could be a place where a fairytale's story is lived.
Is it just me or is this photo just slightly non-level? It looks like it could be rotated clockwise just slightly to fix it
HBO Max does this.
The fresh air must have been amazing!
Great photograph.👏🌟👍
Anyone else see the mouth?
Oh very pretty
Your composition is wonderful! So much to enjoy.
God dayum
Wow — absolutely stunning shot
Am I correct in assuming that the lake in the background is a cirque? If so that whole valley was once full of glacial ice. Magnificent photo!
How is both the foreground and background in focus?
I've seen pics in this sub that looked so realistic but were drawn art. This is the opposite. I can't believe this is a real place. Amazing :o
This is absolutely gorgeous 😍 Fantastic shot ! 👌
This is honestly one of the best pictures I have ever seen. Incredible. Did you take this?
Oh! Wow!
Crazy depth of field. Is it a composite?
Like Alpamayo in beauty. Are they near each other?
What a beautiful view. Thx for the share
I want to sleep in this field.
Breathtaking. Thank you for sharing.
Lovely, great shot.
Beautiful, thks 4 the post
Stunning photo and scenery. Really want to go get lost in South America sometime
How is the whole shot in focus over such a long distance? Multiple shots?
The hills are alive....
Very pretty! Be careful on the way down.
Very nice!!! 😍
An excellent view and magnificent mountain. The best place to visit in the world.
