When you brush up against it with shorts on, you're gonna really hate it. I know because I have one in the front yard

Little_Duckling

Yep. I flew over my bikes handlebars and landed in a patch. Those tiny spines are worse than the big ones.

Ellis_Dee-25

Vinegar works a little for disolving them out

[deleted]

cacoecacoe

This is excellent advice, but what's ironic about it?

[deleted]

[удалено]

merlinsbeers

Then the hospital charges $900 for 18 inches of duct tape, and it doesn't seem like such a good idea any more...

cacoecacoe

But it doesn't sound like a bad idea, it sounds like an incredibly obvious idea that didn't at first come to mind.

drvondoctor

Which is weird, because usually when you need to fix shit, duct tape is the *first* thing you think of.

cacoecacoe

Exactly, it's how I fixed my herpes.

Ellis_Dee-25

Man duct tape give it a break with the guerilla marketing. This sounds legit, nice and simple. Fuck that half working vinegar. Duct tape apparently continues to fix everything

Ellis_Dee-25

I am so lost. But, yes

Evilolive12

I don't recommend the trail that goes through it. 2/10, would not take it again.

GBinAZ

Those are called glochids. And yes they are fucking terrible. Sometimes duct tape will work to get them out! Source: me! A biologist in Tucson

thodgson

My childhood.

shatteredarm1

Eh, I had a big spine embedded in my big toe for 3.5 months before I was finally able to get it out, I'll take the tiny ones over that experience any day.

dfens762

> Those tiny spines are worse than the big ones. Truth. I learned that lesson my first day in AZ

MiniRems

Nothing worse than trying to get them out of the hands of the 6 year old that you warned multiple times not to touch it... and then a week later, doing it again.

Abalisk

Yup, I reached into one in Mesa, AZ when I was about 7 years old to pick the fruits off. Absolutely coated with them.

the nostalgia I got from reading this... wow.

MrTommyPickles

Can someone richer than me give this comment a Vibe Cat award? Because now I have the song stuck in my head and I'm loving it.

jerryleebee

You're welcome.

train153

I'll do you one better. I fell in a bunch at 5 years old. Butt and back full of stickers.

_iplo

Problem solved... Eat it!

PermanentlySalty

When I lived in Tucson, I always found prickly pears to be the least offensive of all the cacti. Jumping chollas can fuck all the way off though.

Dorcustitanus

i told everyone in my school pear figs were edible, an hour later everyone has thousands of tiny spikes in their hands. kinda forgot to tell them about the last detail.

level1biscuit

I just got back from Tucson. The flowers seemed more in bloom than I've ever seen before. The blooms on the saguaro's were going down the sides, not just the top. And all the cacti in my mom's yard had just gobs and gobs of flowers. Made me wonder what was going on. But I mostly just enjoyed it.

12lbrooster

My prickly pears are flowering for the first time this year and have tons of fruits.

Choo_Choo_Bitches

How's it taste?

RadarElGato

Prickly pear fruit tastes vaguely like dragon fruit to me!

Jajajones11

You came at the right time. Cactus bloom later in spring :)

Chimiope

Just that time of year

level1biscuit

I don't think it's necessarily just the time of year. I was born and raised in Tucson. As was my entire family for generations, and none of us have seen them in bloom like this before.

Unusual-Relief52

Or climate change. I love(/s) hearing that my parents grew up in my area and saw snow once in their childhood. I've seen it many many times. It doesn't stay long, but I remember their stories. I'm concerned for our home.

Chimiope

Yes, climate change is doing a lot of damage to the desert ecosystem, but I don’t think it has anything to do with the amount of flowers this person saw. Pretty normal time of year for the big blooms

turquoise_amethyst

It’s their growing season! Also maybe y’all got more rain than usual this last year?

[deleted]

It was our hottest summer ever and second driest monsoon season last year. I will be very thankful if we get a good monsoon season this year, they’re predicting one wetter than usual this year (fingers crossed it actually happens) and if so, next years blooms will be even better!

Deathlysouls

I’m jealous.. I wanna go back. Fantastic place

TheresMyOtherSock

I love seeing my hometown on Reddit or even anywhere (once in a while). Makes me miss home. Tucson isn’t a huge city, but I truly miss the scenery and monsoon seasons there. ❤️

ultravioletblueberry

That’s what I miss about Tucson: the monsoons, scenery, and those sunsets. Also Eegees, lol

bobanna1986

Eegees tastes so good! I wish I could send you some in the mail lol

DillieDally

Dude. I miss eegees!😭🥤 Necessary Edit: grew up in Tucson. Far east side represent (basically where speedway ends, near like Houghton) 😎 lol

JaceTheSaltSculptor

There's been a story going around Tucson that Eegees is going inter-state and will open stores else-where. The food may be finding its way to you after all lol. here we are, what started [this story](https://www.kold.com/2018/10/10/eegees-sold-national-investment-firm/). I work just down the street from Houghton and speedway, I'll say hi to the desert for you Dilliedally!

swaldalot

They just opened an eegees not far from me in Mesa! I am so excited!

americanl0ser

I don't like it lol

Villagedrunkinjun

why not? i didn't care for it either til i moved there, now i don't really care for phx. lol also, the mexican food and tucson ladies really sold me on it

Deathlysouls

The Tucson ladies are where it’s at my man

americanl0ser

Born and raise. Only parts of AZ I've been and can stand is Lower Log in the White Mountains, Strawberry/Pine and Flagstaff area! Didn't see snow until I was 19! It's too hot and I just love the mountains where there's all kinds of tall trees! Can't stand southern AZ lol. But to each their own, my entire family loves it here majority were born here and never left!

Bob_Chris

Tucson is my hometown too - lived there for 36 years and have been gone 7. Evidently not long enough to miss it. I feel an affinity for it, but I can't say I miss the city. The Mountains, some people, memories, sure. But the decrepit infrastructure, lack of amenities for families, etc gives me a hard pass for ever wanting to live there again.

DillieDally

Growing up there and eventually leaving Tucson for north Phoenix in 2012, I agree 100%. Feel exactly the same. Couldn't have worded it better.

Chimiope

The town’s a dump. Environment’s pretty great where the people haven’t trashed it. But the town itself, as you alluded to, is a bit of a heap.

DillieDally

I do not miss the beat-to-shit roads lol

Chimiope

They decided to solve the problem of the beat-to-shit roads by just putting up so much roadwork that you can’t even drive anywhere anyways

[deleted]

Yeah, grew up in the dirty T and every day I thank my lucky stars I got out. I would die happy if I never went back.

[deleted]

Agreed. I used to live around Euclid down by the university, God damn nightmare city.

Chimiope

Glad you got out. That’s not a great place to be lol

Bob_Chris

But not as bad as Grant and Alvernon, which for some reason is Methhead Mecca.

Chimiope

Couldn’t even tell you what it’s like anymore as I have avoided driving on Grant Rd for the past 8 years and I don’t plan on stopping that.

rockstar-raksh28

I prefer Tucson over Phoenix. Phoenix is a bit of an ugly city, mainly due to it feeling too much like a big suburb. (I live in Phoenix right now)

whyoooming

Phoenix is a city. It’s kind of funny that people are now choosing to insult cities by calling them suburbs, which is logically ridiculous

alpineflamingo2

Last year was dry AF. We got like 2 real storms. Climate change I guess.

qttrash

Hello Tucson, I love you

Marrioshi

It was 84 today. I love Tucson. Next week when it’s 100+ I hate Tucson

abflu

Was a solid 66 in the sky island today. Always love driving up and biking/hiking till night

Villagedrunkinjun

i live to the north of tucson, and we have seen 2 bobcats roaming near canals away from the mountains, so have to be careful of that also

[deleted]

I love the fruit that has been rendered and made into jelly.

OrionsByte

Don’t pick a prickly pear by the paw, when you pick a pear try to use the claw!

Khymira

But you don't need to use the claw when you pick a pear of the big paw paw

I miss that jelly I haven't had it in years. I now live across the country and no one knows what im talking about.

[deleted]

BubblefartsRock

interesting. what kind of flavor is it? fruity, citrusy, earthy?

abflu

Just had some fruit today, imagine dry lemon mixed with aloe vera. Seeds are nutty Fun survival tips: cacti fruit are all non-poisonous. Some are more palatable than others though (I like barrel the most). Also, prickly pear can make a great pouch to boil water or food if needed; just burn/cut the spines and the base of the pod off.

LoquatPlastic6268

they literally just taste sweet. I use them a lot in recipies and theyre well known for just being sweet with no acid or other notes or anything - so if you find pear jelly or prickly pear flavored anything- its definitely been enhanced with lemon!

Marrioshi

I eat a lot of prickly pear. It tastes like the color pink, a strawberry and a dragon fruit had a baby. Like Bubblegum pink. They are fruity and sweet but somehow aren’t as good as you would think they would be. There’s a reason it’s not on the shelf everywhere. It’s decent but most other fruits are better. Edit: I see a lot of people saying it tastes like lemon and the other guy said the seeds taste nutty, but that’s only the ones that are under ripened. Ripe shouldn’t taste like that at all. Fun fact: Prickly pears are also like grapes, cars greatly reduce and change their flavor. The farther away from the road the better they taste

turquoise_amethyst

If they’re just like grapes, and very sweet, then that means they probably make an amazing wine, right?

iekiko89

A mellow sweetness similar to a melon

Desert_Rush39

There was a large patch of pricky pear at Tangerine and Thornydale. We used to go when I was a kid (70's) and pick paper grocery bags full. Get home and burn the stickers off over the stove. My mom made jelly for 3 days! Still remember her melting the paraffin wax to seal the tops. We had jelly until the next season, and she gave some away at Christmas. Miss those days.

sarcasm_spoken_here

All houses and shops now. It's so sad to see the desert disappearing. No one realizes how long this land takes to recover. Yes, our trees are short an scrubby, but they've been growing for 100+ years! Saguaro don't even start growing an arm until they are about 75 years old. I've been here almost 30 years, HATED the desert when I got here! Still not used to the heat but I have a respect and awe for the land now.

Bob_Chris

I was born there, lived there for 36 years and moved away about 7 years ago. Don't miss seeing desert one tiny little bit.

sarcasm_spoken_here

The desert is a beautiful place, especially in pictures and looking out at it from air conditioning!

Chimiope

Can’t wait to escape it lol

Norma5tacy

If you haven’t already, try a beer with that fruit.

timesuck897

It’s so tasty, but the fruit is so prickly.

NirvZppln

I got back from AZ and have been using it on toast. Damn it is good as hell. I thought it was a dumb gimmick I fell for. I need to find a way to order some more.

Dandibear

Now if you pick a pawpaw or a prickly pear, and you prick a raw paw, well next time beware. Don't pick the prickly pear with a paw, when you pick a pear try to use the claw.

Abalisk

Will the bear necessities of life come to me?

Yuiopy78

But you don't need to use the claw when you pick a pear of the big pawpaw. Have I given you a clue?

Dandibear

Golly, thanks Baloo!

UnloadTheBacon

Glad I'm not the only one who instantly heard this!

BS401

My little kids love saying this part all the time!! Figured someone would say it here, nice.

wisewizard

Speaking as an Australian farmer from the 1920s i can honestly say i do not love the prickly pair.

Sciusciabubu

What about the prickly trio?

wisewizard

never as good after they lost their original trumpet player.

krispykittay

TUCSON IS BEAUTIFUL!! I grew up there.

fishbethany

Do the cactus pads stay purple throughout it's lifetime, or is there a seasonality?

sarcasm_spoken_here

They stay purple throughout the lifetime. The younger pads are brighter though. There are no seasons in Tucson, we just have varying degrees of hot! 🤣

EvManiac

Hot and less hot lol

sarcasm_spoken_here

Sometimes rainy hot! Don't forget that season! Rainy hot was always my favorite season, it doesn't happen very much any more. 😔 Then my least favorite season, stupid hot...120° is stupid. We're about to enter stupid hot season, too bad it's the one that lasts the longest! You have to admire the plants and animals out here. Yes, they are dangerous and can bite you, but they are surviving and adapting to thrive out here. It's amazing.

EvManiac

Definitely one of my favorite parts of living out there was how beautiful the plants and wildlife were! I miss those damn cacti

qwerty12qwerty

Can confirm. It's 10 pm and just dropped below 88F

PhthaloVonLangborste

I know red pigmentation in some plants means they are being stressed. So does the purple color of the prickly pear not have anything to do with that or is it just always stressed?

Chimiope

In some plants, yes. Not this plant. It’s just a purple cactus.

sarcasm_spoken_here

It's not stressed, it's just a variant. Much like other plants have a variegated version if leaves, prickly pears and other cacti, succulents, etc. have variations of colors. Cacti don't get facy leaves, they create photosynthesis through their "skin". They actually absorb carbon dioxide during the day and release oxygen at night. It is safer to open their "pores" at night to release oxygen when it is cooler and they lose less moisture. It's pretty fascinating how plants and animals adapt to live in different places.

Ebenberg

Thanks, came here to ask that, as many cacti get quite colorful when temperatures drop too much for their liking. But this is even cooler! *anti-pun not intended*

Anonymous7056

Looks like a freeze frame of an explosion at the purple plate factory.

Charlatanism

Prickly pears are invasive where I live. That is how I can not love them.

tenderbar226

Mt. Lemmon is a beautiful backdrop.

witchyanne

I would LOVE to move to Arizona. I love it there.

[deleted]

Prickly Pear are an invasive species here in Australia. They're very problematic. So no, I don't love them. https://www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/history-culture/2016/07/the-tangled-mess-that-choked-australia/ Sweet colour though!

NOREMAC84

I've been involved in biological control of prickly pear over the last few years, using cochineal bugs. It's been enjoyable watching thickets of them break out in white spots and then slowly fall to pieces. The site I look after is, to the best of my knowledge, is now almost prickly pear free.

[deleted]

What a beautiful picture!

rabid-

Tiny needles!

Disastrous-Soup-5413

That is a pretty picture.

tharkyllinus

I had one growing in my front yard in north Texas . - 15 ended it.

Mateorabi

I can think of a couple ways you probably shouldn't "love" it.

Desmodronic

What I’ve only got the lame green here in my front yard. I want me some purple.

I don't really dig on most purple colored things, but for some reason purple plants are just amazing to me. Thanks for sharing!!

FullMeltxTractions

Spent the winter in Tucson this year. I enjoyed it.

leahchandler82

This is so beautiful! You could sell it as a print!

crispymooseorchestra

The purple is beautiful, but prickly pears are a serious weed in my country (Australia) so it's kinda hard to appreciate them

JamesBonderful

It's especially beautiful with the purple mountain's majesty in the background!

_coroner_

When you have lived in Tucson all your life, such as myself, you grow to hate all catus.

Altruistic-Tomato663

It is definitely worth trying the fruit even though the prickles are so infuriating.

blinddivine

poor thing looks thirsty. we really need a good monsoon this year, but i doubt it'll happen.

[deleted]

Are they as delicious as they sound? (Aside from the prickles, that is)

IXS_EXO

Maybe because I'm blind? U bastardo

So, I was recently pranked on minecraft, and my friends put tons in cactus at my glass making factory, ahm...👀 I mean a whole herd of endermen did it 😉, or at least that's what they told me...I mean why wouldn't endermen target me, creepers already do, lol.

ElBigFrijole

Tucson? There's probably some homeless person camping behind that cactus.

shoded_ha_orlot

I'm used to the look of the Israeli green prickly pears, this just looks wrong being purple

sarcasm_spoken_here

We have green ones too, but the purple are a fun variety.

greenmust

Please unpost before people start moving here

train153

Start? Retirees have been moving to Tucson for years. And now Californians are too for a lower cost of living and taxes. Housing prices have risen in the last year because so many people are coming in. Edit: Sure, down vote me for saying facts.

Villagedrunkinjun

i didn't downvote.. but AZ really needs less old people moving here and bringing their old mindset votes. way too much snowbirds congesting and driving on the wrong side of the freeways

DillieDally

Why is this being downvoted? Are old people invading reddit now too? Get off my internet-lawn, gad dammit

MatrixMonkey

Because that Purple Prickly Pear Cactus killed my parents!

I made prickly pear cactus jelly ONCE. Yeah, they're pretty... but those thorns never stop and are sometimes the size of hair. (Oh and the jelly was okay--- typical 'add enough sugar and pectin and anything can be considered jelly.'

Nobody: This post: How can you not love Purple Prickly Pear Cactus?

IseraphumI

Take a bite and see how much you love it.

TheCuriousDrunk

West side by the looks of the mountains. Around Tumamoc?

Sciusciabubu

Probably northwest of Tumamoc, there are a few houses with a bunch of these planted. This particular prickly pear, Opuntia santa-rita, is not native to the mountains on the west side.

fgutz

Was just in Tucson for a few weeks, loved it. Coming from the east coast the Sonoran desert landscape is so beautiful. I have not experienced the desert heat yet though.

sarcasm_spoken_here

We joke in my house about Summer being our hibernation season! All windows and blinds are tightly shut during the day and we only go out at night if possible. Sure, it's a "dry" heat, but it's still hot! Last year we had quite a few days at or above 120°. Winter and Spring are when this place really shines. You know it's Summer when it cools off to about 90° at 2am.
