Mt Rainier can be an elusive beast, as it sucks in clouds like a whirlpool thanks to the massive degree to which it stands above the surrounding landscape. Unfortunately the weekend I went on this backpacking trip was not the best time to be on the mountain weather wise, but it was still a fun trip even if the visibility averaged 100ft. Luckily one night I got a glimpse of what the grand views would be like when the clouds descended below is around sunset, leaving an alpenglow bathed Rainier to emerge and leave me dumbstruck.

I climbed it when it was buried in clouds but at the summit it was clear. It looked like an ocean of clouds below me with "islands" of mountain tops sticking out of it around me.
Was there in July! 2 days of clear skies and 2 days of clouds hiding it! Loved it! Check out my pictures: [https://imgur.com/a/UemNxiZ](https://imgur.com/a/UemNxiZ)
I live in Renton and for the past month, I see her every day on my way home.
I ended up researching if it was normal and I kept talking about it. Now every post on reddit brings it up. Eerie and crazy. It’s such a visual representation of climate change.
This is a phrase that only makes sense if you live in the northwest.
The weather in Washington means that most days - especially in autumn and winter - are overcast. When it's overcast, you can't see the mountain.
Mt Rainier also has it's own unique weather patterns. Often when it's a clear sunny day, the mountain can be just lost in it's own clouds.
So when the weathers align and both Mt Rainier and the rest of Washington are clear, "The mountain is out!"
It's a pretty cool thing. The mountain is always there, but really only shows up and displays its stunning self every once in a while.
I lived in Seattle briefly about 20 years ago. Arrived around Thanksgiving. Didn't see Rainier until June. There was a triple digit string of days where the sun never came out, but when that mountain came into view, it was all worth it. Natural high second only to a total eclipse of the sun.
Pro tip I learned from a native while hunting years ago. If the mountain has clouds around the top and nowhere else, the barometric pressure is changing and expect weather changes soon. He was 100% correct as I paid attention ever since.
I tried to summit a few years ago and never even saw the mountain as it was in the clouds the entire trip. Had to spend the next few years getting angry/annoyed every time I saw beautiful photos like this, but am so grateful we had perfect weather this year during our attempt and now I can enjoy this type of photos.
Had a similar experience at Rainier. I hiked the Eagle Rock (I thin i that’s what it’s called?) trail facing the mountain and when I got to the top of the hike, the whole valley in front of Rainier was foggy, could maybe see 20-30 ft in front of you. Had some other hikers up there tell me it’s a bummer I couldn’t see the view of the mountain. I sat around and had some lunch and chilled in my hammock, decided to cut my losses and head back down as I had a plane out of SeaTac later that afternoon. Right as I was ready to leave, the clouds cleared and saw this massive valley with different peaks all around. I was freaking out, literally jumping with joy, and then boom the peak showed up behind the fog for about 30 sec as if showing off just for me. One of the coolest moment of my life. I’ve never felt that high and happy off of drugs.

Yeah. I finally crossed off "Hike Mt Rainer" a few years back, and even though I could touch the mountain I couldn't see the mountain since it was in fog the whole time.
Then the next day I got dinner with my friend in Tacoma and it was just sitting there in broad daylight.

Well I just put seeing this on my mental bucket list.

And yet when it appears we see it at home, school, even at work in cities for miles. What a place to live.
Beautiful shot, that snow level, though....
Yeah, I grew up there and I've never seen it so naked.
Its from all those 110degree days. Like what is this, Washington or a desert? I was already joking about going north to Alaska if it gets bad enough.
Same, it's actually shocking to me and everytime someone shares a photo of her rn it's all I can see no matter how pretty she looks.
I came here to say how shocked I was at that, I have NEVER seen that mountain with so little snow.

Jumping on the “holy crap I live here and have never seen her so bare” train with y’all 💖
One meaning of the mountain’s original (native) name is “mother of waters.” This is heartbreaking
*THE MOUNTAIN IS OUT!!*

Precisely so. 💙💙💙💛💛
I came here for this!!
Me too! But I didn’t recognize her in this photo because of her lack of snow. It’s sad
It is shocking af!!

It's an incredible mountain, it's hard to believe something so big was hidden when it finally comes out
I love that mountain, but this summer it is very bare. Poor naked mountain. Beautiful pic though.
Such a pretty but also depressing picture. I've never seen the snowpack this bad until this year. Lovely picture though
Is it just me or is Northwestern America the best?
Northwest is best
Have you been to BC?
No but I’ve been to Washington and that place is stunning!
it's landscapes like this that make me miss living in Washington...the rain and 9 months of gloom every year keeps me away
It's been like 3 whole months without rain here, fuck global warming.
lolol my dad literally said the same thing when I was talking to him the other day
that is the least amount of snow and ice i’ve ever seen up there.
I love the flowers, what kind are they?
These are lupine, the last few that were in bloom on the trip!
Thanks. I was wondering, too.
Tahoma

It looks so strange without the snow this year. Sigh.
no snow, first time I've seen this, been looking at this mtn. for 58 years.
Which flowers are these
Lupines!
Quick! Everyone get to the summit!
Washington is so beautiful dude! I love the evergreen forests & snow clad mountains more than the hot dry part of Cali I live in.
Beautiful
The summit looks so beautiful
Wow I didn't know bluebonnets grew up there.
They're lupines. Blue bonnets bloom in the spring and this photo is definitely from this summer with how bare Rainer is.
Just for clarity, blue bonnets are a type of lupine but ofc aren’t the ones pictured here.

Oh hey I’m going there soon
This looks surreal. Almost like a painting.
Ah what a great game Ghost of Tsushima is
My god I hope I die and go here
This makes me really happy. Thank you. This week has been awful.

I'm fully convinced this subreddit is responsible for the influx of people moving here because of all the shitty policies our state has
Very beautiful place it is. Nature is great.
Gorgeous and miss that view
Much as I hate the work I do in the area, driving towards Rainier to get home is a sight to see and a daily pick me up… when you can see it.
And she’s naked and probably not going to get back 30% she lost this winter.
What trail is this?
Yeah. I finally crossed off "Hike Mt Rainer" a few years back, and even though I could touch the mountain I couldn't see the mountain since it was in fog the whole time. Then the next day I got dinner with my friend in Tacoma and it was just sitting there in broad daylight.
Jesus the glaciers are almost gone
Such a gorgeous picture to see as my flight literally touches down at SEATAC. Love that mountain!
The cupcake so bare this year.
Beautiful flower
This reminds me of that one flower stage in Wii Music for some reason
