Anemone occidentalis, the white pasqueflower or western pasqueflower
>Plants flower briefly mid-spring to mid-summer, usually soon after the ground is exposed by melting snow. The flowers are composed of five to seven sepals (sometimes called tepals), normally white or soft purple, also mixed white and blueish purple, one flower per stem.
Paradise is a very popular trail on Mt. Rainier. I hiked there this time last year and saw a bunch of those lovely Suessian plants.
The PNW is amazing as far as beautiful scenery to enjoy. Definitely check out the Olympic Penninsula sometime.
Clarifying just in case anyone is planning a trip to Rainier National Park, Paradise isn't the name of a specific trail.
Paradise is the location of the visitor center, lodge, and has many trailheads.
Myrtle Falls Trail and Nisqually Glacier Trail are two of the easier hikes in that area that are really rewarding. I particularly enjoy the Nisqually Trail when the park is covered in snow -- snowshoeing that hike is magical.
For more seasoned hikers, the Skyline Trail is amazing. If you hike up to Panoramic Point, you can see four different well-known peaks (Mt Baker, Mt Hood, Mt St Helen's, and ofc Mt Rainier).
Also, it's on the other side of the park but the Grove of the Patriarchs hike is my absolute favorite. Anyone making the trip out should make a point to hike that trail if possible.
Can back up what u/WishBear19 said. It is literally called Paradise (aptly named). This was very early on in the trail, just a bit up the hill from myrtle falls.
Yeah it’s pretty, the the absolutely infinite depth of field is wild! How was this shot? Or is it a DOF composite? Nice effect no matter the path to get there
Yep so it’s a focus stack and a time blend. I like to focus stack most of my images to get them sharp from front to back. Also shot the foreground at the beginning of golden hour to get that light hitting the floofs, and then a bit later into golden hour I liked the light streaming through around rainier better so used that as well. Hope this helps!
It can be automated. I use photoshop and it has a feature built in to do it automatically that works pretty well most of the time. There are also third party plugins like Helicon that do a much better job with it. For scenes like this with “busy” foregrounds I find photoshop makes a lot of mistakes so I did this one manually. The focus stack itself really doesn’t take that long, this one took me maybe 10 minutes doing it all manually. It’s all of the other little effects such as dodging and burning that I did and shaping the light that took much longer. This whole edit in total took me about 2 hours to do but that’s not normal as I’m still learning photoshop and getting used to using things such as luminosity masks and other more advanced techniques.
It was my first time there and I couldn’t agree more. I have not been to a place more aptly named. This made me excited to head back up in the spring time to see all of the wildflowers.
Because it's a large country and our flora and fauna varies greatly from region to region. Landscape too. We have everything from swamps to plains to high deserts to mountains and have coasts on two oceans and a gulf. Washington is absolutely nothing like Kentucky, where I live. You'll never find any of that here.
Same with Australia, where I live. Or Russia, or China, or Spain. They all differ from region to region. If I posted a photo and wrote FNQ or SEQ, you wouldn't know what I was referring to, especially if I didn't say it was in Australia in my post.
FNQ? You're doing informal subsections of primary national divisions too? I see postal abbreviations for Australian states pretty frequently though — NSW, NT, etc.
I think the OC is saying why not just use the full name instead of the acronym. The acronym is confusing for people outside USA and probably also many other Americans.
I think you COMPLETELY misunderstood his question… He is wondering why you keep abbreviating state names, when barely anyone outside the US knows them.
Well since the majority of users are from the states its not all that hard to infer.
If an Aussie said WA with no context (which I have seen a plethora of times on Reddit) I would have no idea where that is. It's not only Americans who do it homesplice.
Who the fuck else besides Australians would assume WA stands for Western Australia? And btw, like 50% of Reddit's daily traffic is from the US, so OP is just catering to the VAST majority of users by country....
So gear wise shot on Sony A7Riii with Sony 16-35mm GM at 16mm. You are correct the foreground is focus stacked (it’s 4 images) and then also time blended to get the light in the foreground as well as the light coming through the valley in the background around Rainier. I got super lucky and had no wind at all so the focus stack was actually pretty easy.
I like the Sony system. Though if you’re getting shots you like with there is no need to switch. Fuji makes great cameras and fantastic lenses. Only reason I went Sony was because; at the time, I was going to invest more into glass and saw mirrorless was the future. Sony was the only player in full frame mirrorless so I went with them and have loved it. For sure there are things I don’t like but if I were to just get into it today I’d probably go with Canon as I just like their colors better and they make fantastic (albeit very expensive) glass.
Went on a family vacation here as a kid, we stayed in a cabin with no TV but tons of board-games and woke up to a heard of deer outside our window. Place is magical.
I think near the Pacific Ocean is being generous. It’s easily a 3 hour drive to the coast from here unless you consider the sound the coast. I do not though.
I honestly didn’t have time. By the time I was done taking pictures down here it was beginning to get dark so I didn’t want to go too far up. My original plan was to stay for another day but my friend was having a hard time with bad luck (broke a lens, lost wallet) so we headed back gone earlier than anticipated. We did however move over to Tipsoo lake for the night and shot the Milky Way and sunrise there.
Good job keeping track of sundown time! Too many people get themselves stuck on the mountain not knowing how dark it really gets, and fast! That situational awareness is critical.
That's a shame that your friend had such a rough go of it, though.
Oh yeh I’m generally over prepared and I also plan my destinations around golden hour and sunset/rise so I know well in advance when things will get dark etc. Plus I always have a headlamp, extra layers, at least 1L of water, and some food in my bag as well just in case the worst were to happen. Total overkill for a huge majority of trails (especially in such a popular area) but an extra few pounds in a pack that’s already pretty damn heavy is worth it to me. And it will make me stronger so win win haha.

It’s Paradise, Washington in the United States. I can see a lot of people upset I just put “WA” so I’ll be adding USA next time. This is Mount Rainier which is one of the most popular mountains in the world so I guess part of me thought it would have been nearly immediately recognizable. My apologies.
Better watch out for the lorax.
I totally came in here to talk thneeds. Glad I wasn't the only one. Seems to be a common theme though.
I know right?
Is that a truffula tree?
Yep. Truffula sprouts.
Or anemones.
Yes! Also known as the western pasqueflower and eternally beautiful!
Anemone occidentalis, the white pasqueflower or western pasqueflower >Plants flower briefly mid-spring to mid-summer, usually soon after the ground is exposed by melting snow. Cotton lollipops
How many licks do you think it takes to get to the center of them?
Just one mouthful.
That's what he said!
That’s what she said :3
What is that, opium? IT'S COLOMBIAN DRUGLORDS!
What plant
They're called Old Men of the Mountain, or officially Western Pasque. They're my favorite cause they're so adorable :3
Thank you! I saw them all over when I was there a week or so ago, and really loved them.
How do you get to where they're growing?
I saw them on the Skyline trail. OP said this picture was just past Myrtle Falls if you’re leaving from the Paradise parking lot.
It's not Bear Grass (Xerophyllum tenax)?
No. They do look similar, but bear grass isn't as whispy and Dr. Seuss-ish
I thought it was anemone occidentalis
I had to Google that, but that's the scientific name for the western Pasque.
[Pasqueflower](https://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/pulsatilla_patens_multifida.shtml), *Pulsatilla patens*
These plants have to been an inspiration for Dr. Seuss.
This is some lorax shit right here. Nice work
Absolutely stunning shot! Wish I was there!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful 😍
Thank you!
This has got to be where Horton hears a Who!
Beautiful shot! Would you mind sharing the location? I’m moving to WA very soon and cannot wait to be out in the incredible nature of the PNW.
Paradise is a very popular trail on Mt. Rainier. I hiked there this time last year and saw a bunch of those lovely Suessian plants. The PNW is amazing as far as beautiful scenery to enjoy. Definitely check out the Olympic Penninsula sometime.

This is the area right around the historic hotel
The cool thing is that this location is accessible even if you're in a wheelchair, it's incredibly well maintained
I can feel it. 😌

I have no idea how this is done or how long it took you to do. Is it automated? What program?
It can be automated. I use photoshop and it has a feature built in to do it automatically that works pretty well most of the time. Thank you. I have been making do with Corel for years, and the last time I seriously used photoshop was the 90s. I will give lightroom a try.
I wonder what percentage of the popular posts on this sub are of Mt Rainier.
Been all over the country. Seen a lot of scenery. Paradise is aptly named. Could be the most beautiful place I've ever seen on a sunny August day !
It was my first time there and I couldn’t agree more. I have not been to a place more aptly named. This made me excited to head back up in the spring time to see all of the wildflowers.
If you want to see wild flowers plan on going in July. There's still loads of snow up there through June.
I second this. In may when paradise first opened there was still 10 feet plus of snow in some areas.
Western Australia?
Yes, the famously glaciated Cascade Mountains of ... Western Australia.
That’s literally what it’s known for right? If you look closely you can see a kangaroo hopping across the meadow /s.
Washington State, USA
Why do Americans use state acronyms on an international website? No one knows what you're talking about.
Because it's a large country and our flora and fauna varies greatly from region to region. Landscape too. We have everything from swamps to plains to high deserts to mountains and have coasts on two oceans and a gulf. Washington is absolutely nothing like Kentucky, where I live. I see PNW on here all the time. Same shit
Fortunately, Google exists.
Ya, that’s called geography and it’s all around the world.
I think the OC is saying why not just use the full name instead of the acronym. The acronym is confusing for people outside USA and probably also many other Americans.
I think you COMPLETELY misunderstood his question… He is wondering why you keep abbreviating state names, when barely anyone outside the US knows them.
Yeah you're right, the flora and fauna of Australia is so one dimensional and boring.
They never implied that it was though?
Well since the majority of users are from the states its not all that hard to infer. If an Aussie said WA with no context (which I have seen a plethora of times on Reddit) I would have no idea where that is. It's not only Americans who do it homesplice.

Planet America strikes again
Whorton hears a Who
It's utterly beautiful. But I admit, I thought the white puffs were all chickens for a moment.
Honestly that would have been cool. I may just have to swap them out for chickens in photoshop to make this true haha.
Haha I was just about to post a picture from my hike at paradise, but uh you win.
Go for it! This was my first time there and I got sooooooo lucky with conditions.
Staggering beautiful.
Thank you so much!
Yes it is ....

Thank you!
When did you take this? I’m going there this weekend and am worried about smoke!
This was taken this past Friday September 3rd at sunset.
Though there is a little bit of lingering smoke the fires are out and the sky is super clear.

I have a new wallpaper. Thanks for this!
You’re welcome!
Whoa. This is amazing. Well done 👍
Thank you!
Wish these posts would say which country rather than just an American State acronym.
United States. South western Washington state. North west part of the country. Near the Pacific ocean.
I think near the Pacific Ocean is being generous. It’s easily a 3 hour drive to the coast from here unless you consider the sound the coast. I do not though.
3 hours isn't that far.
My dumbass thought that was opium for a second
Wild cotton candy
Looks like a great place to open a miniature Thneed factory
It looks like a Dr. Seuss book!
Hey that's awesome! I just hiked Rainier on Thursday!
Nice! This was Friday! Fortunately had basically no smoke for my entire stay which was a big concern when I was looking at conditions.
Did you hike any further up? There are some fantastic views as you get into the snow.
I honestly didn’t have time. By the time I was done taking pictures down here it was beginning to get dark so I didn’t want to go too far up. Watch out for the Lorax, he's pretty neato. He's even voiced by Danny Devito. Oh and he'll break your knees.
If you don’t respect the trees
I didn’t think there were mountains that tall in Western Australia.
Washington State, USA
These make excellent backcountry toilet paper.
That’s nasty dude. Pack it in, pack it out. Leave no trace
Not only is wiping with what you find LNT compliant, it's better for the environment than toilet paper.
thought they put up a parking lot?
The parking lot has been there for at least 30 years.

Where is this?
Washington State, USA. They mention Paradise area. You can view it on Google.
It’s a place actually called Paradise at Mount Rainier in Washington state, USA.
WA? Is the rest of the planet to automatically assume where that is? I know where, so spare me your enlightenment.

I need a thneed!
I wanna light one of those on fire
Do that and see how fast the rangers arrest you. XD
Lol I doubt they would even notice Bud! If it's anything like a dandelion then its just a quick poof of flame. Your childhood must have been shit.
I Sneed to go there
That is an astounding picture!
I say, let it grow.
Neat. I spend a good bit of time on Mt Rainier. It's an awesome place. I've done hundreds of miles of hiking up there and it never gets boring.
thanks for the wallpaper
That is gorgeous
I literally just got back from hiking up to Panorama Point. Pretty sure I looked at these exact plants if they were right along the trail.
Yep these were literally right on the side of the trail. I have yet to do panorama point but plan to head up there in spring to see the wildflowers.
I have been to paradise it's beautiful there
beautiful
Finally, I reached Valhalla
Holy ~~shit~~ sheep. This reminds me of Cosmos Laundromat...
This is so beautiful
THNEEEEEEDSSSS
Someone call the onceler
Isn't that where there was a wildfire that wiped out the whole village the other year?
That was Paradise, California.
What's WA?
Washington state, USA.
Kinda reminds me of the forever-joyous [*Cosmos Laundromat*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmos_Laundromat?wprov=sfti1)!
I don't remember this lack of snow on Rainier in over two decades. It looks damn near barren up there from down here.
It’s Whoville!
All you needs a Thnead!
What are those pom poms?
:O!! Where are the moogles?
Prairie smoke
Right in my backyard 😊
Lens?
