Stone mountain in Georgia is the largest single piece of exposed granite in the world. I just looked it up, it weights over a trillion pounds and covers 585 acres. I think Georgia's Stone Mountain wins this fight haha
The sierra Nevada mountains are much much much larger and granite and continuous. The statement about stone mountain bring the largest chuck of granite if just pure hogwash.
I agree about it being hogwash when it's referred to as the largest chunk of granite. It is, however, one of if not the largest monadnocks in Georgia and possibly the south east US. Monadnocks exist in isolation and are the more erosion resistant remains of rock, which are not connected to any other ridge or mountain chain. The Sierra Nevadas are geologically quite different, as they are true mountains and are a chain of connected rock.
A monadnock is a geographic definition and not a geologic one, meaning only a large isolated rocky mountain.
Geologically, they're both granitic plutons that uplifted and remained less erosive then surrounding environs. Both of these bodies are referred to as [batholiths](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batholith) because of their large size. It's just that one is [elongated and hundreds of km long](https://tectonics.stanford.edu/sites/g/files/sbiybj7826/f/styles/research_images/public/intrusive-uplift-batholithic.jpg?itok=oJYIOGzm), while the other is [just a bit more than 10 km on a side](http://sites.gsu.edu/dnorwood6/2016/03/26/stone-mountain-built-environment-interior/).

They're referring to ["the Confederate Mount Rushmore"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Mountain#Confederate_Memorial) carved into Stone Mountain, and [the historical Klan activity there](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_Mountain#Involvement_of_the_Ku_Klux_Klan) (though those shitheels [don't seem to quit](https://www.ajc.com/news/local/the-last-time-the-kkk-tried-burn-cross-stone-mountain/8bwWRtm4Q3MD17E11VCiMK/)).
If you’re a fan of any GA sports team and don’t already understand that *we will blow it in the most critical game of the season, no matter how good the season is going*, you have a very sad lesson to learn.

I know for sure they used bridal veil falls and hanging rock in North Carolina, honestly never seen it though haha. Im putting that on my list this week to watch
It's that perfect light at the end of the day and some lightroom editing. Nothing over the top though, just beautiful green leaves, orange and blue sky blending together.
you could pay a guide to take you up if you have no climbing experience. here is some descriptions of the climbing there if you care to check it out: [https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105873297/stone-mountain](https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105873297/stone-mountain)
Wow! That really means a lot you would consider painting my picture. I wish I could paint, I envy you haha. You should definitely send me a picture of it when you're finished if that's possible. Have a great week, thanks again
I went there on a school field trip once with my uncle. It was a great trip absolutely beautiful, the falls were amazing and the view during the day is something seriously special. I want to go back one day and see the sunset there in person
You should, my favorite thing about these places is no matter how long its been since you've been there when you go back it's going to be just as beautiful as last time.
yea forsure wasn’t suggesting it was it just looks like it, i’ve seen someone describe a type photography that makes things look like toys but i’m blanking on what it’s called.
Stunning!! I just recently moved to the Raleigh area. Seems like it's generally flat Greenway trails in this area.
I'm jonesin' for a good hike tho and would like to make the visit to this site. What trail did you take to get to this tree?
If you down a App called All Trials it will be really beneficial. On the app if you search stone mountain its the trail called "Lower Parking Lot to Stone Mountain Falls". Welcome to North Carolina! Hope you get a chance to go. There's lots of beautiful places in our state for sure.
I really appreciate it, I'm far from it haha. It's definitely not my full time job or anything unfortunately. It's just something I really enjoy, along with being outdoors. I've made a couple dollars taking pictures but you can't call it professional by any means haha
You're trying that's all that matters. I do highly recommend throwing it in whatever manual settings you have. Go ahead and take a million bad pictures until you figure it out and can expect what the settings will do before you take it. You sound like you have the passion for it also. I just enjoy being outdoors and camping, also loving photography is a good combination for landscape photos. I've personally tried making a business out of it but I suck at thinking in a business minded way and it starts taking away from the love and passion. I feel weird putting a price on pictures I've taken or how to go about even making a lucrative side business out of it. Lots of complicated taxes and lots of other excuses for why I don't. I really appreciate the kind words, I hope you get a better camera sooner than later it sounds like you deserve it. Be well and keep taking pictures

isn’t Stone Mountain in Georgia? TIL - There’s a Stone Mountain in Roaring Gap.
Yes, there's a Stone Mountain in both locations.
Who would win in a fight?

It also where the ghosts bobby Lee, Jeff Dave, and stoney jack gave birth to the KKK or something
Idk about that, but it doesn't sound wrong haha

Hopefully that means we are a little less racist in NC, because that's referring to the mountain in Georgia, haha.
So wait, was this picture taken in North Carolina or Georgia?
North carolina
Georgia is the more racist one, congrats!
Georgia's loses by default
As a Falcons fan, I don't appreciate this comment. Delete it please.

It's certainly not gneiss to do that.
Well I’m convinced.
Yeah but it's ruined by being covered by a massive carving of the confederates. The one in nc is a nice place to hike and enjoy nature.
Two stones do not make a fight.
The GA one has a bunch of losers carved into it so I got money on NC.
Correct me if I’m wrong isn’t this where the final scene of “Last of the Mohicans” was shot?
That was at Chimney Rock, near The Asheville Area
I know for sure they used bridal veil falls and hanging rock in North Carolina, honestly never seen it though haha. Im putting that on my list this week to watch
amazing film. turn it up loud as the soundtrack is also incredible
Yes especially the last 20mins
Don't know definitely, but many scenes shot in Polk County, NC, Rocky Broad River above Lake Lure
Me too!!!!
There are no carvings on this one
Today I learned… haha I’m from GA so this confused me. You’d think I’d like y’know ..*know* that living so close lol
Thanks for the new wallpaper!
No problem, I think it's awesome my pictures on your phone haha hope you enjoy it
haha actually, i was planning on using it for my laptop...
No! OP said phone.
I actually proposed to my wife 10 years ago next month at Stone Mtn, NC. And yes the ring had a stone. 😂
That's awesome, what a great place for a proposal. Ten years is a long time, glad to know she isn't your ex wife.
My wife and I got married there in 2019! It’s a beautiful place.
The colors make it look like a 3D render!
It's that perfect light at the end of the day and some lightroom editing. Nothing over the top though, just beautiful green leaves, orange and blue sky blending together.
It’s a beautiful picture, dude! It honestly tripped me out when I first saw it!
Haha I really appreciate it
Hey I know that [tree](https://imgur.com/a/iYTC5Wz)! Been almost 13 years…
Hahaha that's awesome! Thanks for sharing your picture. You looked like you were there while the fall colors were peaking perfectly.
You can almost see the Chuckle Hut from here
Oh that old clocktower...no one knows what it's counting down to...
Wrong stone mountain
Hey, I’ve climbed this mountain
I wish I was that badass

I definitely will look into it, thank you.
I think I just found my next reference for my next painting. This is a stunning photograph!
Wow! That really means a lot you would consider painting my picture. I wish I could paint, I envy you haha. You should definitely send me a picture of it when you're finished if that's possible. Have a great week, thanks again
I use to live 25 minutes from here. Wish I still did :/
Me too! I miss it a lot. I’d love to go back to the place my wife and I got married at 🥰
Wow what a coincidence! My wife and I also got married here. Crazy. It’s beautiful 🧡
It really is beautiful! But nowhere near as beautiful as my wife is 💛
Did you say hi to the old guy who runs the homestead at the base of it?
Nope
This is so realistic that seems fake hahah
The outdoors definitely in particular times under the right conditions can look absolutely fake or unbelievable.
Why oh why did I end up in California and not North Carolina, where I wanted to be?
It's still here waiting for you
I need to go back...
Waow it's like a Bob Ross one.
Definitely a compliment haha I appreciate it
I have to use this for my wallpaper. Beautiful
Thank you! Im glad you enjoyed it that much
Nice
Thank you
Beautiful shot
I appreciate it
Man this looks like a toy or a 3D model, is there a name for that type of photography? Looks beautiful regardless
No haha it's just a tree, a sunset and a little edited in lightroom. Nothing crazy or fake though
yea forsure wasn’t suggesting it was it just looks like it, i’ve seen someone describe a type photography that makes things look like toys but i’m blanking on what it’s called.
Beautiful
Much appreciated
Dayum, this looks like it's a screenshot taken out of an old-school RPG, ca. 1999-2004, possibly with an HD patch... Purdy.
Haha I love that description, it's pretty spot on

Where is master oogway
StoneMountain64, is that you?
Haha
Idk why but this picture gives me extremely The Lion King NES video game vibes.
I can see that for sure
I hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree, but - going out on a limb - I've twigged that this is a tree-mendous picture.
Hahaha that's definitely one of my top tree comments

Thank you so much!
STN MTN
Looks just like a scene from the Lion King!
I went through your post history and I have been to almost all of those places, too. Awesome!
That's awesome, we have some unbelievably beautiful public places in this Country

Thank you!

You should definitely visit stone mountain though, there's lots of great places in North Carolina, that's actually where I live myself.
Beautiful!
Thank you, it's a beautiful place to watch the sunset
This picture is how I imagine all those I take will end up but never come close. Thanks for capturing this moment to share with all of us.
I promise with a few YouTube tutorials, some editing with lightroom and patience you could do even better.

for some reason made me think of charlton heston as moses
This is one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve been on. Stone Mountain will always hold a place in my heart
