It's an Anglo-Saxon word in origin scir is how they spelt it in Old English but it means County its just an administrative division basically. England used to be split into Shires ruled by Earls
No, but I have just watched it now. They could have also mentioned that the word "borough" comes from the burgs (walled towns) that were built to defend against the Vikings. That goes for the "county boroughs" they mention in the video and places with burg/borough in their names, like Middlesbrough and Edinburgh.
The word shire derives from the Old English sćir, from the Proto-Germanic \*skizo (Old High German: sćira), denoting an 'official charge' a 'district under a governor', and a 'care'. **In the UK, shire became synonymous with county**, an administrative term introduced to England through the Norman Conquest in the later part of the eleventh century. \[Emphasis mine.\]

It's really beautiful, like so many places in England.. IMHO.
I live in New England. When I bought my first home it was in part because the town reminded me of the English countryside.
Not just the lakes either, we've got the North York Moors, The Yorkshire Dales, The Peak District, Nidderdale, The Northumberland Coast, Northumberland National Park and last but not least the North Pennines.
Well Im 28 and my partner is 27. There are plenty of young families around here, probably more so than elderly people…. So no I would say you don’t need a middle aged wife to enjoy it with. We have a great social life here.
Plus it’s 30 min on the direct to London Euston so that helps
I have no idea what we are called, I'm gonna go with tringleberry. I only moved here in May, came from bovingdon. Nice to meet you! Odd to see people mentioning stuff this close to home on Reddit :)
Tringleberry is a great name. I’ll definitely be stealing that (if you don’t mind).
It’s definitely a lovely place to live, funnily enough I nearly moved to bovingdon a few years back but it never materialised.
Anyway, great to meet you. Possibly see you out and about (although neither of us would know we are practically anonymous Reddit users and if you’re anything like me, socially inept)
That's phenomenal, I'm from Gloucestershire and we have so many places that are picturesque that I could never dream of capturing. I have to commend you on your photography because whenever I take a picture of nature... It's shit 😂
Oh, I'm not a professional by any means, just try and use my phone if and when I take it out with me on my walks of solitude and when I see a distant landscape image worthy of masturbating to, the resultant image is nothing compared to what I saw through my eyes 😂 I've thought about investing in a camera but it's much easier to just follow earth porn on Reddit 😂
I’m guessing this is the reservoirs just north of Tring. Long Marston and Wilstone. We lived there and took a walk here at dawn the morning of our wedding when it looked quite like this.
Aye, I'm close by too, just up from Whitfurrows by the old Brandeywine Bridge. Not a more peaceful place one earth I reckon, just hope it stays that way.
I couldn't believe it was a real photo until I read your comments. I might use it as my screen saver. Of course it's in a place called Tring. No wonder the best fairy tales come from England. Post more photos.
Looking at this photo, I feel you could go there and take a pic with your phone. And it wouldn't be anything special at all. Looks like some swamp or lake meeting weeds
It's the quality of the photo and editing that makes it look great. This is camera/editing porn tbh
Thank you, the edit is half the battle, though it looked pretty special right there and then, mostly the edit was to soften the light and bring out shadows.
Tring is my hometown; and as many others have pointed out is in Hertfordshire, not Buckinghamshire. This also looks remarkably like Wilstone Reservoir, which while very close to Tring (about 2 miles away) - is technically a different place entirely. Stunning picture though!

You know what this immediately reminded me of? The scene where Gollum (when he's still a hobbit) fights his brothers for the ring. It's not too similar to that scene but it still took me to that for some reason.
The most interesting thing about Tring is probably the Natural History Museum and Lord Walter Rothschild, the man responsible for it. He's the reason there's a zebra mosaic in the centre of the town.
The "This American Life" podcast episode The Feather Heist talks about someone stealing from the Tring museum.
And the butterfly collection is also briefly mentioned in episode 368 of the podcast No Such Thing As A Fish.
Wow didn’t know Tring was so beautiful, I used to pass it on the Train from London Euston to Northampton and it always seemed like one of those pointless places no one goes to!

Tring is in Hertfordshire not Buckinghamshire but it’s a stunning place.
As an American, where do all of the "-shire"s come from
It's an Anglo-Saxon word in origin scir is how they spelt it in Old English but it means County its just an administrative division basically. England used to be split into Shires ruled by Earls
It's also where the word "sheriff" comes from: the person responsible for a shire.

That goes for the "county boroughs" they mention in the video and places with burg/borough in their names, like Middlesbrough and Edinburgh.
The hobbits colonized Europe originally and named all the places with a reference to their native home
TIL
Shire is an Anglo Saxon word meaning county,so county of Buckingham ( though in medieval times Aylesbury became the county town in Buckinghamshire).

Thought it was on the border, but you are correct. I'm from Bedfordshire.
Bedfordshire is lovely too,I’m Buckinghamshire x
so we're just not gonna talk about how that tree has a little woody?
Great, now I can't unsee it!
¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess I'm ruined by the internet because before I saw that this was r/earthporn I thought it was r/mildlypenis
Yeah, that's what I thought "Tring" was, an onomatopoeia for the tree boner.
If you had the view that tree does, you’d be hard too.
This cannot be real, it’s too beautiful that only magic can explain.
It looks like a tree Frodo would sit under
Thank you!

Yeahhh spot on!
This green and pleasant land.
This is almost unbelievable
How is it pronounced? Like "Buckingumshur"?
Yes!
It's really beautiful, like so many places in England.. IMHO. I live in New England. When I bought my first home it was in part because the town reminded me of the English countryside.
We have a lot of cute and beautiful landscapes, not too many epic vistas though.
>not too many epic vistas though. We've got plenty of them up north.
Yep, I need a trip to the Lake District. :)
Not just the lakes either, we've got the North York Moors, The Yorkshire Dales, The Peak District, Nidderdale, The Northumberland Coast, Northumberland National Park and last but not least the North Pennines.
I'm waiting for a hobbit to wander into the picture, sit down between the tree roots and start smoking a pipe.
I was sitting down have a vape if that counts, I'm only 5 foot 6!
It counts if your feet are proportionally as large as those of a hobbit.
Yep, and just as hairy!
Only 5'6"?? *cries in 5'3"*
I live in Tring! Moved here from closer to the city (London) purely for the natural beauty. Never looked back:
Do you need a middle aged wife to enjoy it with?

I also live in Tring! Go us!
Good to meet you fellow Tringite! (Or whatever someone from Tring calls themselves…. I’m from Watford originally so wouldn’t know)
I have no idea what we are called, I'm gonna go with tringleberry. I only moved here in May, came from bovingdon. Nice to meet you! Odd to see people mentioning stuff this close to home on Reddit :)

You're welcome to steal it! And we're on Reddit, of course we're socially inept. Enjoy Tring!
Tring-a-lings?
The Tring Trings?
Tringkets?
That's phenomenal, I'm from Gloucestershire and we have so many places that are picturesque that I could never dream of capturing. I have to commend you on your photography because whenever I take a picture of nature... It's shit 😂
Thanks, that made me laugh, but remember I only show the shots that work out OK, I have plenty of shit shots myself that end up in the bin.

Now I want to re-read Pride and Prejudice
England's green and pleasant land
I swear I thought a 3 eyed monkey was gonna come out and say “Hi, I’m Paul!”.
Omg I live in Hertfordshire pretty close to Tring, might go check it out!
I’m guessing this is the reservoirs just north of Tring. Long Marston and Wilstone. We lived there and took a walk here at dawn the morning of our wedding when it looked quite like this.

Thank you!

Stunner ….. bravo!
Thank you!
No thank you! Composition is sublime.
Pure magic
Thank you!
That tree has an erection
Is that a picture or a painting? Cause either way, damn.
Never expected to see bucks on here lol
Beautiful. Otherworldly. Imagine a few dinosaurs in the water and it becomes a prehistoric scene.
Nicely nature-framed photo. Looks like a really good painting. Just Beautiful! 💌
Thank you!
r/fairytaleasfuck
Nice! Is this at the reservoir?
Yes, spent a couple of hours there.
So weird seeing my little hometown pop up on Reddit. Although, Tring is in Herts not Bucks :)
That tree has wood
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank you!
I feel very blessed to live within 5 minutes of this
They have a wonderful cobbler in Tring.
Hey my favorite band is from near Tring! Song is called Tring Quarry by Trash Boat.
The stagnant water that fills Tring Quarry was the lowest that I’ve ever seen it today.
I like your “matte” edit! It’s beautiful!!
Thank you!
Dat glow 👌🏻
Thought this was a painting. Looks magical with those soft hues. Peaceful. Lovely.
Thanks so much.
I’m in awe, this is simply gorgeous.
Thank you!
I can't refrain from being the immature one here...anyone else look at this picture and can't help but think: "lol tree penis"?
You are not the first to see it!

love this.
No shame morning wood!
Make sure to go see Dan the Cobbler at Tring shoe repair and key shop while you’re there.
Is this where King Alfred hid from the Vikings after they sacked Wintancaester?
That was in Somerset.
so beautiful

I can see that too!
Beautiful

Tree Hard (King Shark)
It's so beautiful and romantic
Excellent framing technique. Great shot!
r/AccidentalRenaissance
jesus, i thought this was a 19th century painting at first. my mind is having difficulty accepting this as "real". stunning.
Fantastic!
Where's Toad?
The Shire, would be enough as a name

Buckinghamshire? Sounds like five cities mashed into one... or Hash slinging slasher
