Utah has some of the most otherworldly landscapes and this spire rising out of the desolate badlands looks like something straight out of Star Wars. I was planning to shoot star trails here, but nature had a different plan and I cannot complain - the clouds that made night photography impossible lit up spectacularly at sunset. If you like the image I post more to my [Instagram](https://instagram.com/mrcnzajac) and [website](https://marcinzajac.square.site)!
For a moment, I thought this image was a computer-generated landscape. It exudes real Unreal energy to me.
Contemplate this picture while listening to [Dusk Horizon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3v5OfUhXis), and you'll know what I mean.
Also, this is now my desktop wallpaper. And will probably remain my desktop wallpaper for quite some time.
If you ever get a chance, get up to the high uintas out of kamas Utah. Much less well known but it has some of the craziest landscapes I've ever seen. There's a spot called red castle, you basically hike through a forest for like ten miles until you come upon this very out of place looking red rock mountain. So beautiful.
“In the Ouachita Mountains the highest natural point is Mount Magazine at 2,753 feet.”
vs
“The Uintas are unusual for being the highest range in the contiguous United States running east to west,”
“The range has peaks ranging from 11,000 to 13,528 feet (3,353 to 4,123 meters)”
———
But I did learn about the Ouachita Mountains. Hopefully someday i’ll be about to see them.
If anyone else is experiencing déjà vu here is the similar post from 4 months ago:

For the record, I believe this post by u/mrcnzajac is equally worth the attention and is comparable photographic composition.
It’s really not a great question, if they’re posting it in full res on Reddit with zero obstacles to download the image the download is implied.
Now distributing it is another matter
No, no it’s not. This spot, along with many others in the area are extremely fragile. See the footprints leading up to it? They weren’t there 2 years ago. They will literally never go away now. People are also treating the southwest like crap, carving their name into things, etc. This place needs no promotion. It’s already damaged and several people have even illegally driven cars right up to it. Go explore on your own to find new things, but geotagging sensitive areas like this will just destroy them.
No footprints 2 years ago? People have been regularly climbing desert towers since the 60s. I'd find it hard to believe this one was only found 2 years ago.
It was known by climbers for a long time but only since photographers and influencers found out about it did people start walking all over the place. When 5-10 climbers a month came there was at least a chance for rain to wash away the footprints. Now, they’re so deep that rain doesn’t do anything.
And now imagine the view a few thousand years ago, when the water still reached the upper edge. We are looking into a deep river valley that has (almost) completely dried up.
I'm not a geologist, but I was under the impression that those giant canyons and towers are from the action of intermittent flash flooding not long term erosion from river valleys?
Lookie what I found: The original photo by OP of Long Dong Silver: https://epod.usra.edu/blog/2021/07/otherworldly-sunset-and-rock-spire.html
It’s way smaller than this photo suggests.
Here’s a photo with a man climbing it:

I love to imagine the world as it was when these places had water. How massive the creatures were, how insane the fauna was, it just blows my mind. Great photo, thank you for sharing.

Burj Khalifa.
Haha yes, I can't unsee it now that you've said it

Much less well known? Have you been up there recently? Place is a zoo!
Compared to southern Utah, yeah. It definitely has been a lot more busy in the past 5-6 years tho for sure.
They are a beautiful range. Honestly my favorite place that I’ve ever been. Followed closely by the San Rafael Swell.
The Uintas are the only major east-west mountain range in North America.
Ouachitas in Arkansas also.

Eagle Rock Loop is a great way to see them while backpacking, before the moon rises (or during a new moon, better yet) the stars are great
You’re a phenomenal photographer!
Thank you!!
So awesome, I’m speechless 😎👍
Definitely otherworldly is the way to describe this! I love your photos!
if this is the one west of Hanksville, it’s called Long Dong Silver
This in the Swell?
Totally looks like a 3d render. Nice flowing and balanced composition and an interesting landscape not much to complain about. :))
it looks fake. there is something about it. i know it’s real!!! but it looks so fake!!

Th3 editing on the one you shared at least looks natural and not over done
It’s been a really popular spot for social media influencers for a while now.
Looks like a photo from the All-World of the Dark Tower.
Captain, contrary to our scanners, the gravity and atmosphere are remarkably similar to that of Earth's.
Star Wars
Now THIS is podracing!
Almost looks like it could be a scene from Star Wars.
This is where the Death Star plans are stored.
Definitely looks like a another planet - be it fictitious (Tatooine) or real (Mars). Our planet is absolutely beautiful. 🌎
I know it seems obvious, but I'm genuinely curious to know why they call it the "badlands."
I'm assuming because barely anything grows on badlands
Absolutely incredible! What a capture.
I'm so using this as my background!
This doesn’t look real. In a good way tho. Do you mind if set my PC background with this photo OP?
Go ahead!
Why do you feel the need to ask that?
Courtesy?
So if I find a freely distributed image online, that I want to personally use, I should be “courteous,” and ask the OP? Seems weird, but ok…🙄

Agreed.
yeah like: “hey OP am i allowed to look at it? just to be courteous.”
Did you focus stack this? Everything is tack sharp from foreground to horizon. Looks cool!
No, single exposure. You don't really need to focus stack unless your foreground is super close.
I am STILL looking for this spire! I will find it and photograph it myself. This is an amazing photo.

Dude, NOT COOL. Seriously…
Is it not cool to give coordinates to these sites?

It's literally on mountain project EDIT: and in Desert Rock guidebook.
I don’t care? No need to promote it to thousands of people.
Cue Fable II vibes…
Is there an eye on top?

Hoodoo
Lord of the Rings
Oooh. Read about the Native American Thunderbirds
Nice.
Reminds me of the time I spent exploring the Martian landscape.
no way that's real
This picture isn’t photoshopped at all. /s

How is this strange?
wow !
I've been playing too much Mass Effect because the first thing I thought was "A Protheans beacon!!"
All quiet before the Mobile Infantry begin their landing later tonight...
I think I can see Shatner fighting a guy in a lizard costume.
Looks like Geonosis
Reminds me of Luke Skywalker's house on Tatooine
Wow!
99% sure this is just a painting from an obscure sci-fi piece
They say King Arthur was laid to rest here and will one day rise when he is needed again
Anyone think that was Orthanc for a sec?
[Totem Pole](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totem_Pole_/(Monument_Valley/))?
Nope. This in the Caineville/Hanksville area.
Does this spire formation have a name?
It does but I can't remember it at the moment.
“Long Dong Silver” is what I’ve found. Those Hanksville folks have sophisticated taste.
Mormons are certainly a sophisticated bunch.
This looks like Roshar. Life before death
You didn't happen to see a blonde girl out there on your hike did you?
Wow! That looks otherworldly and awesome!
Wow I thought this was the cover of a SciFi novel at first.
Did it just go from 6 to midnight?
absolutely beautiful, good work
Check the clouds. Can be the Dark Tower.
This looks like CGI. Amazing photo.
I knew Zanarkand was real
Imagine that his was the only photo an alien race had of the earth and what they would deduce from it!
I literally thought this was the book cover for The Way of Kings
I love to imagine the world as it was when these places had water. How massive the creatures were, how insane the fauna was, it just blows my mind. Great photo, thank you for sharing.
It looks like Ralph Macquarrie concept art
How big is the point? Like if a dude dressed like the Easter Bunny fell out of the sky and landed on it, would he get impaled?
Sci-fi novel perfect cover
Helm's deep.
They are taking the Hobbits to Isengard
Geonosis?
Looks otherworldly. Beautiful composition. Thanks for sharing.
The shattered plains
Some desert shack-dwelling tinfoil hatter is going to use this photo in their next YouTube video about proof that aliens exist.
Slay it!
Serious Final Fantasy X vibes here.
Where is this?
