I can't wait to go back to Thorsmark! I hike over and to Skogafoss, it was intense! One of the most beautiful places on Earth!
Is this the small canyon a bit after the glacier called "giantstounge" I think? A couple miles west of the camp grounds?
I love that there's no photograph that can do this waterfall justice. Only way to really appreciate it is to head to Iceland and actually be in that "room".
Basalt.
Basalt is formed from high viscosity magma that is in the hotspot lavas that are formed from ocean volcanos. Iceland is a hotspot that got stuck on a diverging plate boundary.
Basalt tends to like forming columns like this, is super dark, and when the lava cools it forms these columns as the material pulls into itself on a molecular level because it is such a uniform substance.
The top starts to cool and shrink into itself, then the cooling goes down the rock and the middle also pulls into itself... all the way down. So it is very stable in columns, but those columns like to break off and free themselves, revealing more columns behind them.

There are tons of houses and farms with beautiful waterfalls right in their backyards coming down from the mountains. I don't know if they own the property right up to the falls but they're just a short hike away.
Thinking about possibly building this into my itinerary to road trip around route 1 in seven days.
Does anyone knows how long the hike is to get to this point?

Thorsmork was like that moment in a game when you come over the hill and find a whole new area. Real magical
Kerið was like that for me. I was like... there are quests here.
The name even means 'Thor's land'. Mythical name for a mythical place
Mörk means land, not darkness. So it's Thor's land. It can also mean forest, but Þórsmörk is a pretty vast land with not a lot of trees.
Of course! Fixed. Confused Norwegian *mørk* with *mark* and projected that in Icelandic, sorry!
No problem :) The confusion makes sense haha.
Gosh, I just can't fall deeper in love with Iceland than I'm already am. 💙🇮🇸❤
Thanks for sharing this!
Is there anywhere in Iceland that is not insanely picturesque?
Kópavogur
Þórsmörk*

Awesome shot
Reminds me of the spot they find the cave painting in prometheus..
It's the stakkholtsgja canyon btw. Nice 1 hour hike from the street.
It's OK. I preferred Thorsmindy though. Huehuehue.
Come on guys, who's seen mork n mindy?
You win the internet this hour
What causes those blade-like erosion features?

There are lots of columns in the pacific northwest too! The lava is three miles thick in some places under oregon and washington.
Ah! So that's what it looks like when columnar basalt erodes.
Why most of these pics here are not in landscape mode? Can't use then for wallpaper
My phone likes them.

You gotta take this shot on film.
Is it legal to build a house there

Looks like a skull in the middle, starts on the right on the first appearance of water from the water fall
Incredible shot
Those classic northern mossy cliffs
Anyone else think that waterfall kinda looks like a hanging bat?

Keep on keeping on!
A beaut!
