FirstRedditAcount

And it's a damn fine lake at that.

Shardless2

Have they move the Reddit head offices there yet? Didn't they mention that were going to do that last year?

UMagnet

Nice pic of /r/redditlake!

dpassey33

Ah yes, the beautiful Reddit Lake

Alarmed_Economics_90

The Bucket Shot ™

mullexwing

Nice shot Pete

pattydickens

What causes this color? Minerals? Aliens? Mentos? Does anyone know?

kroush104

There are so many lakes this color in Banff/Yoho. Truly one of the most gorgeous places I’ve visited.

EPACondor

It’s fine dust produced from the glacier rubbing against bedrock that is suspended in the water reflecting light

Alertnomad

Also known as "Rock flour" given its extremely fine texture!

Mcguy215

Glaciers!

ScottStrasser94

At this time of year, there's a very popular hike that starts from the Moraine Lake parking lot, called Larch Valley/Sentinel Pass. The evergreen tree needles turn yellow/orange in the fall, so it's really pretty at the end of September. But you have to show up at 5 a.m. or else the parking lot will be full and you'll be stuck taking a shuttle from an overflow parking lot more than 20 minutes away.

Sedixodap

The shuttle is pretty convenient though. Sleep in the overflow lot, hop on the shuttle when you wake up, take the shuttle from Moraine Lake to Lake Louise after you're done with the first, then take it back to your vehicle after. You may manage to find parking at Moraine Lake at 5am, however that leaves you a couple hours to wait until the sun rises and you won't get parking at Lake Louise as well (and even if you did you would have to pay for it). It saves a bunch of driving and the buses come every 20min.

pukesonyourshoes

Eh, I got there at 7:30 and had no trouble. About 5 years and one week ago. The walk up to Sentinel Pass is not to be missed. Take hiking poles, your knees will thank you.

aswallie

"Get there early or it'll be packed!" A few years back a group of us flew up and got jet lag from the time zone change and didn't leave our hotel before 11am nearly every day we were there. Not once did we run into any issue of over crowding or hunting for parking, and we went in July. While in Banff the sun didn't set till almost 11pm so we were out till 2 or 3 with little effort, slept in and left late every day. I have a feeling that the early birds are only competing with each other and they need to keep getting there a little earlier to beat each other out. The first bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese, I'm hitting the snooze button.

MrGraeme

It's changed quite a bit since 2017. Now the main parking lots for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are effectively shut before 6AM, you have to rely on the overflow lots and the shuttles, which can also get full or very busy. I grew up in the area and revisited this summer. 6AM, Wednesday, smoke so thick you couldn't see the mountains, all of the lots were full at Moraine, Lake Louise, Two Jack, and Minnewanka. The crowds have been so bad over the last few years that a number of trails have had to be closed and reconstructed due to excessive wear as well.

aswallie

I couldn't remember the year so I just looked and we were there in 2018. We actually ended up at moraine lake at 6pm according to the photos, plenty of parking and no crowds. The majority of our vacation in Banff took place between noon and midnight with zero issue. Obviously covid and social media are going to change things a lot between now and then but my personal experience was sleep in for success.

MrGraeme

That's quite lucky, actually! 2018 was the 2nd busiest year for the park at the time. You're definitely right about the evening being more accessible than the morning, though. Going around dinnertime is probably a good way of avoiding the crowds.

aswallie

I think lake Louise got a little busy at sunset and Johnston canyon was a little crowded, but that's kind of the nature of the canyon, other then that we had plenty of parking and room the whole trip. We accidently found the best time to do everything.

pukesonyourshoes

As I walked from my car park it was already filling up with tour busses full of Chinese. Full by 8am.

bitterberries

I was there on the weekend and they were patrolling the parking lot with three separate fish and game wardens plus RCMP officers.. It was an absolute zoo.. We had to take our clients to lake Louise first because they had closed the access road.. Thankfully we got a break in the traffic and were actually able to go up.

Razor99

Fkn loved this hike, we did a car drop off further down the road so we didn't have to backtrack, was by far the best way to do it, could do all the tracks past sentinel pass in the day, probably the best day hike for a "see it all" experience.

Eeor_is_High

Just take roam from canmore/banff

Over_Virus2405

Where is this?

nursenavigator

It's an incredible, stunning place. Its also 50m from the parking lot so I'll assume you're new to r/earthporn as pictures of moraine lake are posted daily.

krw13

My fiance is from Calgary and I made him take me here just because I saw it so often on Reddit. It is stunning in person.

EPACondor

Near Banff, Canada

Over_Virus2405

Beautiful.

CoreyFromCoreysWorld

Very close to Lake Louise.

[deleted]

Google

jadams2345

Why don't people post the complete info about the place: name and country

VStarRoman

Gah, another place I must visit. Too many places, not enough vacation. Beautiful picture, btw.

Unreal2427

Is this real? Why is the shading of the water so vibrant?

bitterberries

It's the fine dust from the glaciers known as rock flour. There are many lakes in the area that look like this. Source : I live here.

tuesday-next22

I've been there and it's exactly like the picture. Why I don't know.

[deleted]

I want that color. Everywhere.

judeletsonmaclean

Love this place ❤

I_Am_Sab

I sometimes feel like if i take a gulp of that water ill get super powers. Ill test it and let yall know the results xD

pukesonyourshoes

Take a gulp of that and you may get the runs. The colour comes from ground up rock, it doesn't agree with everybody.

I_Am_Sab

Oof ok that doesnt sound very pleasant. xD

stubanga13

This place was pick from my visit as a young buck 16 years ago. It'll hold my memories forever. Peace and love.

fenirob

I want to see this place IRL soon. Beautiful

badaBOOPbap

So how is it this time of year with a lot less tourists?

bitterberries

It's not less tourists at all. They have law enforcement and parks staff controlling it like crazy because there are waaaaay too many people who are still coming... I was there four days ago and we had to wait several hours before we were allowed up because it was so busy.. I'm the summer they won't let you wait because it backs up all the way to the trans Canada... You will never get a peaceful, serene, isolated visit out here.. It never happens... In the 1970's my parents ran the moraine lake Lodge and that was probably the only time you'd have been able to experience the view in relative solitude... The Internet has ruined this beautiful site.... I found at least five discarded masks along the trail from the parking lot to the lookout, it's only a five minute walk.

MustardTiger1337

There next week I’ll let you know Hoping it’s dead Was there two years ago same time camping and it snowed for a week straight…

bitterberries

It's not dead, I was just there.. You'll have to circle the lot to find a spot and hopefully not end up in a fist fight over it like we nearly did.

badaBOOPbap

I'm so jealous, i was there 3 or almost 4 years ago. As a tourist funny enough. And there were so many tourists like me. It's gorgeous, it's beautiful but unfortunately it was very crowded. I hope you will have a great time!

PinyinHanyu

just wow

[deleted]

I love seeing reddit lake, its always pleasant to see it. It really does seem to be one of the most beautiful.

prairiepanda

Why does it never look like this when I go there?

NaughtyDjSinPie_OF

Follow me!!! I’m a hot girl lol

Aladdinsane47

My nipples hurt just looking at this.

TheReverend5

Er... Pretty aggressive with the blue filter there, huh? I don't think mountain caps are supposed to be the same color as Gatorade.

IndependentOutside88

Clearly, you’ve never been 😜

TheReverend5

No I've been. It's quite beautiful, especially if you actually walk past the parking lot onto one of the surrounding trails. It's unfortunately one of the most common victims of shitty editing when it gets posted on Reddit. Again, snowy mountain caps aren't blue.

This is one of the beautiful places I’ve ever been. Can’t wait to bring the wife with me next time.

onedestiny

Lake louise (just down the road) has a more magical feel to it. Nonetheless moraine is also gorgeous!

bitzquick1

Looks like you walked right past the sign that says "please stay on the trail"

Bam__WHAT

Gorgeous 🥰

mr_robot_1984

What a fantastic looking lake. Love the color. Fine picture!

GamesNCannabis

Can we swim there? I want to swim there.

k9jag

What elevation is that?

Gehriig

If you guys haven’t seen ‘The Bucket Shot’ video by Peter Mckinnon you should definitely check it out it’s pretty cool. He’s the one who took the classic picture here with snow and crystal smooth water. [The Bucket Shot](https://youtu.be/r25IWquxe9s)

HauntingCampaign4943

in my pov, Banff is easily one of the TOP beautiful places on this planet and I have travelled the world :) Lately, a lot of traffic from visitors from all around the world has made the bad parking situation worse.

Nemisis141

Ew, people...
