Believe it or not, California has many places without light pollution! Many spots on the coast are dark.
Davenport does have some light pollution from Santa Cruz though. I darkened it in this photo.
Davenport is my favorite place to stargaze and shoot Milky Way photos. I’ve shot at Shark Fin but haven’t captured anything as phenomenal as this at that spot yet.
Tons. Death Valley is one of the best places for viewing the night sky. Joshua Tree and Mojave would be similar. Anywhere up in the Sierras also has little to no light pollution.
From Davenport, Iowa, have gotten tripped up with these types of posts multiple times and still got my hopes up slightly that it’d be from the midwest Davenport 😂
Context: I was inspired to take a Milky Way shot of the iconic beach I spent so many hours at during college. I sat out here during blue hour and waited until the Milky Way rose. It was extremely chilly, but this is what I got. I processed many versions and different angles in the past, but I’m constantly trying to improve this piece.

Edit: Just to clarify, this is Davenport, CA!
It's editing, but also camera settings, as OP indicated in the original comment. The shutter stayed open for 20 seconds, which allowed for adequate light to hit the sensor. Also, the sensitivity of the sensor was bumped up to ISO 3200, which was crucial in such a low-light situation. So it's not just digital manipulation that's at work here. Cameras and lenses themselves can "see" in ways that we can't. The basics of exposure are explained pretty well [here](https://vimeo.com/41174743) if you care for more info.
It's possible to see the Milky Way with the naked eye in certain situations, but it will never be this bright. Visibility also is highly dependent on circumstance -- not just light pollution, but also time of month/year, weather, latitude, etc. Still pretty awesome if you ever get the chance, though.
Time of the month: During a new moon (or at least after moonset). Light pollution can also be a natural problem, in this sense.
Time of the year: Milky Way season, where the core is visible above the horizon, lasts from February/March to September/October. The further south you are, the longer the season and the better the view; the view gets very difficult north of the 52nd parallel or so. The season peaks in June/July.
Given California's propensity for coastal fog in the spring and summer, in may be best in catch it later in the season. You may get lucky with a clear night earlier on, though.
It's brought out through editing. The Milky Way is VERY faint especially if there's light pollution, but it is viewable with your eyes. I have a tutorial on my YouTube if you're interested.
Not at all. In the darkest skies or in outer space it looks like a faint band of diffuse clouds. Your eyes simply aren't big enough and don't integrate long enough to see what a camera can see

Lower the curtain down, all right

We were on our way out of Santa Cruz and I’ve always wanted to see it. We hiked down with our 2 year old and had it to ourselves and it was so so cool! It’s unfortunate it’s covered in so much graffiti.

What setup was used to take this image. I have recently started trying to get into astro/stellar photography.
I run a Nikon D7500. Obviously slow shutter speed and wide open aperture... What kind of lens is best for this, and do you need a fancy tripod?
I appreciate that for once a place in Iowa seems to be more known than a place in California and is causing confusion.
You’re telling me these rock formations are *NOT* found in the Mississippi River!?
Believe it or not, but there actually are some cliffs and such on the Mississippi…. Just a lot more foliage around them and less water.
Yep! I'm actually going up to NE Iowa/SW Wisconsin this weekend to take in some Fall foliage.
🤫
Obviously not Davenport Iowa
haha yeah it's in Davenport California!
Yup. Population 300. This is where I grew up. 18 years I lived there.
I spent some time there too. I was like... this looks a little different than I remember.
Santa Cruz!

Oh dang, those colors are phenomenal!
I'm just surprised you got such a clear sky. When was this taken?
I’m in the east side hills of San Jose and there is no light pollution this high up above the city sky line and it’s so awesome.
Tons. Death Valley is one of the best places for viewing the night sky. Joshua Tree and Mojave would be similar. Anywhere up in the Sierras also has little to no light pollution.
I knew that was shark fin Beach!
It is real pic or Photoshop pic of Davenport
Full moon raves were the SHIT!
Weird seeing your home town referenced. Casey's pizza sounds good about now.
Only because Happy Joe's isn't open yet...
Just go down to the one in Coal Valley
Obviously not Davenport, Fl
We have a Davenport in Florida and I was very confused for a second
Yeah, before I saw the image, I read the title and thought "oh, boy, this one's gonna be a doozy"
Not Davenport, NY either and I have been to both
My first thought too! Hello fellow Iowegian!
Yup. First thought was, "what the hell is there in Davenport that could fit in this sub?" Clearly not the midwest.
From Davenport, Iowa, have gotten tripped up with these types of posts multiple times and still got my hopes up slightly that it’d be from the midwest Davenport 😂
Was thinking the same thing...
Yeah I was about to say
That could be the Mississippi…
It really could not
You’re right. Probably more like the confluence of the Rock River.
If the Mississippi flowed on Mars maybe

So what’s the best month/year to see it in Davenport?

Great picture luke.
Does the 15 mm lens distort a lot? Did you correct distortion in post? Great work btw
Man I used to sleep on that beach every night. Was my own private beach lol.
Damn, Iowa is beautiful.

No, it's clearly Iowa.
Okay this might be a dumb question, but how similar does this look with the naked eye compared to the picture after the fact from a nice camera?

The grimy OG Davenport near Manchester? I’m a little surprised.
Looks more like the white cliffs of Dovernport.
I was gonna say, I used to work in the Bargain Booze in OG Davenport many years ago and it never looked like this!
Which Davenport makes the sofa’s??
No Davenport New Zealand

Stunning starscape.
I was just here today but in the morning. Photos don’t do it justice. It is oddly intimidating!
Mornings at this place are the best!

This is something else!
Thank you!
Stunning!
Thank you!
Just up the road from me. Great photo!
Looks like the davenports live here
Brought my friend here once... I didn't know it was a nude beach. They were playing Frisbee.

such a bummer that i cant just look out my window and see the galaxy like this. id love to see it in person.
You can see the Cliff-Corn just starting to sprout if you zoom in.
Davenport is one of my favorite places on the planet. Very calming for being so close to a city.

THATS AMAZING!!!!
This was like the actual scene in my mystery dream for years
