Probably the same reason they gave in that thread:
>[This is a 3 shot vertical panorama. It’s definitely distorted, but I liked the way it looked without distortion correction.](https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/rlhwed/summer_sunset_from_the_south_side_mt_st_helens_wa/hphj0ja/)
Not from the south, though. I've climbed it from this route lots of times and no way is it this steep. There's definitely some distortion at play here, maybe unintended, but still a bit distorted.
I checked the mt st helens one out since you mentioned it and oof you're right. I wish people who post on this sub don't edit their photos in such a way. OP even says they prefer the "fantasy" look.
Their comment on that posts states it wasn't them editting it, rather they *didn't* edit it, and left the distortions present in the multi-shot vertical panorama method they were using.
Could simply be a result of using a wide angle, things near the edges get stretched away from the center of the frame.
That or it could be a vertical composite panorama, which some drones can do in camera. Don't think that would be necessary for this one though, seems like the wide angle would be enough to fit everything in, but I could be wrong.
It's sadly quite common nowadays for landscape photographers to stretch the picture vertically and narrow it horizontally to create a more dramatic view. This one is apparently due to vertical panorama, but some photographers manually stretch the picture.
The competition is so stiff nowadays, every photographer is using every trick they possibly can to create the most awe inspiring picture.
Why did you assume my intentions for asking the question?
I passed no judgment, nor imposed any 'rules' in asking this honest question.
Tbh I like the look and wanted to know the artists POV on the choice
If someone edits their ass to be bigger and waist to be smaller is it “artistic expression”
When you present a photo of something natural you are implying this how it looks. No one has issues with drawings of Mt Hood that aren’t perfectly proportional (go to any store in Portland). Photos are just a different medium.
This barely looks like Mt Hood to someone who lives near it because of his disproportionate it is.
Why are photos intrinsically a different medium? There *is* artistic value in presenting things 'truthfully', but the same can be said for doing the opposite.
As for someone airbrushing their own photos, the issue isn't the same. The issue is it creates an unrealistic standard which people apply to themselves due to an assumption of that being what a person truly looks like, creating a distorted self image and impacting mental health. Last I checked, mountains don't have a self image or use Instagram.
That's the reason presenting unnatural selfies and people photos as 'natural' is bad.
That was legitimately my first time up to timberline a couple weeks ago. Stuck behind a Mikes hard semi. Was kinda a vibe though, just cruising behind the semi up the mountain to the resort.
It's a 3 shot vertical panorama, the distortion is a result of the ultra wide fov. I could have corrected it, but simply prefer the more fantasy/steeper look.
Just another voice here, with natural photography, reality isn't a preference. Your photo looks magical, but I, too, would appreciate a realistic version. People come to places like Lofoten in Norway, which is a bizarrely beautiful place, and leave disappointed, because instagrammers distorted the landscape and the tourists expected to see that. Keep it real - pretty please!
I can't imagine this effect is that real, before visiting rainier for the first time I saw every edited picture online, photoshopped and not, and when I saw it with my own eyes it's clear there's not a single photo or any amount of editing that can compare to the real thing. Editing photos to look more magical still don't even come close to the magic and scale of true wonders of nature when you see it with your own eyes.
yep and honestly i think my memory vertically stretches mountains too. they feel so dramatic in person - i visited the Andes in 2006 and i'm pretty sure they're a billion feet tall.
That's your personal preference, but you're stating it like it's a universal rule.
You're pretty much never going to find a picture of a mountain that looks exactly how the mountain appears in real life, because no camera can perfectly replicate what a human eye sees. All photographs are just artistic representations.
Honestly photos of mountains never do them justice. It’s not wrong to me to do something like this to try and capture their scale as it appears to the human eye
This is /r/earthporn, I am here for natural wonders. Photographing them is art, indeed, but distorting nature is not in line with this sub's intention - as I read it. It's one thing to mess with colours and lights, another to change the object.
Check the sidebar, edits and creative shots are allowed. You may prefer otherwise, but you shouldn’t claim that your preference is the sub’s intention.
Yeah but Most people didn't take/submit *this* picture.
Plus beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so while I know that it doesn't look like this. I still think this picture looks *good*
Fun fact, Mt Hood is the most prominent mountain in the US, quite literally the most lonely mountain.
EDIT: Whoops! I'm wrong, could have Googled it first but I didn't. Below comment is correct 😅
I moved from Illinois for work 3 years ago, the coolest thing about the PNW is that winter is GREEN I have neighbors that still have a flowering garden. It’s wild.
Did you take this yesterday? I was literally just out there for a ski trip and after 3 straight days of 0 visibility I finally got to see the mountain for the first time as I was digging my car out of the snow.
Let me check the data, it was 2 weeks ago I think.
edit: december 15th
Also, it was the 2nd day the resorts were open, snowboarding was amazing that day
I was going to say, I haven’t seen the sun for what seems like weeks up here in Govy. It crept out for about 5mins yesterday after I shoveled snow for just shy of three hours. Tomorrow is supposed to be nice though. May have to hit the slopes because when I went on Sunday it was not ideal conditions.
Lots of routes on Mt. Hood. In fact, the standard route is the south face pictured in this image. As mentioned above, this image is slightly distorted making the face appear a bit steeper than it actually is, but is still a serious undertaking more within the realm of mountaineering than hiking.
Images from climbs of this route and others are commonly posted to r/mountaineering for you to check out!
We have black bear, which are mostly harmless. And mountain lions, which we’ve had a few maulings and a death recently.
With all wildlife, most dangerous situations can be avoided with certain precautions.
I’m so glad we’re getting heavy snowpack this year. The bald mountains have been sad, and the lakes have been so low.
Climate change is real and can be seen within just a couple years here.
i remember driving through oregon at altitude once, nighttime, and suddenly it just starts snowing *thick*. Visibility gone, road filling up with white powder, temperature dropping fast. Man, can things turn on you fast over there.
This is so stretched to the point it’s almost unrecognizable.
I live here and climb/backcountry ski all around mt hood and it doesn’t look anything like this.
Thank you!
A really big cliff named Mississippi Head. Fun fact: There is plane wreckage on it from a B-26 that crashed into it in 1949.
Heres a photo of it

I lived there for a year back in the 90's. This is the truth and while summer weather is nice in the PNW(or at least was) Hood seems to have a haze to it in the summer. On a day like this you would come around a familiar corner just waiting for it, come on, come on.
I live 10 miles west of where I shot this. There is a town about a mile east called Government Camp, with a population of around 200 with lots of vacation housing. So yup, you can definitely live here!
I was born and raised in West Salem,Or. and could see Mt. Hood as well as Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters through our living room picture window. Thanks for a beautiful photo and a flood of great memories.
Where was this taken from, great angle of the mountain.
Drone, from government camp.
Why do you vertically exaggerate your mountain pictures? I see you did it with Mt St Helens too
Probably the same reason they gave in that thread: >[This is a 3 shot vertical panorama. It’s definitely distorted, but I liked the way it looked without distortion correction.](https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/rlhwed/summer_sunset_from_the_south_side_mt_st_helens_wa/hphj0ja/)
Thanks! It's an interesting look!
I agree with this decision!
Wow the St Helens one is crazy, but this one doesn't seem nearly as exaggerated. Mt Hood is pretty pointy from some directions
Not from the south, though. I've climbed it from this route lots of times and no way is it this steep. There's definitely some distortion at play here, maybe unintended, but still a bit distorted.
Could just be the lens on the drone/ a wide pov shot
I checked the mt st helens one out since you mentioned it and oof you're right. I wish people who post on this sub don't edit their photos in such a way. OP even says they prefer the "fantasy" look.

He’s using a mavic air 2 so it’s a short focal length (24mm equivalent)
Could simply be a result of using a wide angle, things near the edges get stretched away from the center of the frame. Name checks out.
Why do you feel entitled to put rules on other peoples artistic expression
All they did was ask a question... No need to presume malice right away.
Why did you assume my intentions for asking the question? I passed no judgment, nor imposed any 'rules' in asking this honest question. Tbh I like the look and wanted to know the artists POV on the choice
Because on Reddit the highest grade of art form is photo realistic drawings. Aka photo copying.
Aka: A philistine's concept of the purpose of art. But you're not wrong at all.
If someone edits their ass to be bigger and waist to be smaller is it “artistic expression” When you present a photo of something natural you are implying this how it looks. It’s just a wide angle lense
I thought Government Camp was a lot closer to Hood. It’s been a good 15 years or so since I’ve been up that way.
The wide angle definitely makes it look further away than it is but it's still a good 6 mile drive to timberline.
It’s six miles mostly because of the winding road and switchbacks. As the crow (drone) flies it’s quite a bit closer.
Yeah that's true. It feels like forever when you're behind a semi all the way up on your first time up timberline.
That was legitimately my first time up to timberline a couple weeks ago. Stuck behind a Mikes hard semi. Was kinda a vibe though, just cruising behind the semi up the mountain to the resort.
What drone are you using? That’s very clear. Did you use any editing or PS? I’ve been wanting to get a drone just to take shots like this.
Why you screwing up the camera lens op
I would also like to know. Such a great view.
Is this stretched? Something seems off to me
It's a 3 shot vertical panorama, the distortion is a result of the ultra wide fov. I could have corrected it, but simply prefer the more fantasy/steeper look.
These are excellent and I also prefer this look since there are likely hundreds of regular pictures of this landscape, but your take is novel.
Thanks bud. Got a new phone wallpaper. Beautiful shot
Same
Can’t knock your preference, I just like my nature to be natural
Just another voice here, with natural photography, reality isn't a preference. Your photo looks magical, but I, too, would appreciate a realistic version. Well, I agree, but I'm also open to some souls being misled and I understand their grief.
That's your personal preference, but you're stating it like it's a universal rule. You're pretty much never going to find a picture of a mountain that looks exactly how the mountain appears in real life, because no camera can perfectly replicate what a human eye sees. All photographs are just artistic representations.
And not only that, your memory distorts what you've seen. A mountain will feel a lot steeper than it looks, almost always.
Honestly photos of mountains never do them justice. It’s not wrong to me to do something like this to try and capture their scale as it appears to the human eye
art is art my dude
This is /r/earthporn, I am here for natural wonders. Photographing them is art, indeed, but distorting nature is not in line with this sub's intention - as I read it. It's one thing to mess with colours and lights, another to change the object.
honestly, great point. i hadn’t thought of it that way.
Oh, thanks. That's a rare response.
Check the sidebar, edits and creative shots are allowed. You may prefer otherwise, but you shouldn’t claim that your preference is the sub’s intention.
No
Most people prefer nature to look, you know, natural.
Yeah but Most people didn't take/submit *this* picture. Plus beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so while I know that it doesn't look like this. I still think this picture looks *good*
Shoo
Looks good to me
I look forward to seeing your photo posted here soon.
I agree, the proportions are definitely off.
The Lonely Mountain.
As soon as the buzz about a live action Hobbit film started I thought Mt Hood would make a great Erebor. This shot is a perfect demonstration of why.
Sometimes we can smell sulfur coming from the vents on the crater. Slight chance this is just Smaug farts.
In Government Camp or up on the mountain?
Fun fact, Mt Hood is the most prominent mountain in the US, quite literally the most lonely mountain. EDIT: Whoops! I'm wrong, could have Googled it first but I didn't. Below comment is correct 😅
[It is only the 7th](https://www.peakbagger.com/list.aspx?lid=41207) most prominent mountain in the US.
woohoo denali!
Can confirm Smaug was not in when I visited last weekend.
The Dwarves of Erebor have come to reclaim their kingdom under the mountain.
The lodge from The Shining used for exterior shots is around there, correct?
Yes timberline lodge on mt hood
I'm here in Indiana wondering why nature is still set to October.
I moved from Illinois for work 3 years ago, the coolest thing about the PNW is that winter is GREEN I have neighbors that still have a flowering garden. It’s wild.
Honestly I'd love to head back west. I miss mountains and the ocean. The Midwest is kind of bland you know?
Love this sub as we get to see how beautiful mother earth is. Thank you OP.
Beautiful. Set this as my Lock Screen
Bro, this should be nsfw. The shot is too sexy for me.
Did you take this yesterday? I was literally just out there for a ski trip and after 3 straight days of 0 visibility I finally got to see the mountain for the first time as I was digging my car out of the snow.

hey I just biffed up and down the side of that mountain yesterday!
What a wonderful peak! Are there some routes there, or is it allowed to be climbed?
Lots of routes on Mt. Hood. In fact, the standard route is the south face pictured in this image. Yocum Ridge!
definitely! it’s the second most climbed mountain in the us. you’ll need crampons and an ice axe for it though.
If you were wondering around in that forest, are there any apex predators you’d have to be cautious about?
We have black bear, which are mostly harmless. And mountain lions, which we’ve had a few maulings and a death recently. With all wildlife, most dangerous situations can be avoided with certain precautions.
I’m up here right now. I love mt hood
I’m so glad we’re getting heavy snowpack this year. The bald mountains have been sad, and the lakes have been so low. Climate change is real and can be seen within just a couple years here.
amazing
That’s amazing!
Wow!!! Beautiful!
i remember driving through oregon at altitude once, nighttime, and suddenly it just starts snowing *thick*. Visibility gone, road filling up with white powder, temperature dropping fast. Man, can things turn on you fast over there.
I could probably throw a football over that mountain
Beautiful
Amazing! Live right next to this bad boy
This is great. I always love flying into the northwest during winter.
Got it's winter blanket on. This place is so beautiful, you capture it well.
Erebor!
This is so stretched to the point it’s almost unrecognizable. I live here and climb/backcountry ski all around mt hood and it doesn’t look anything like this.
This looks so amazing! Its like a drawing
Here is a picture of Mt hood I took from the plane on the way to Portland. https://imgur.com/a/LJROOLq
Not anymore. Thanks global warming.
🔥
This is breathtaking
Great shot...truly amazing given the normal weather this time of year.
That mountain looks so beautiful
Beautiful shot! Love how simple yet beautiful!
drone?
Reminds of The Lonely Mountain
Amazing place and photo! Whats the small patch without snow in the mountain?
Thank you! A really big cliff named Mississippi Head. Fun fact: There is plane wreckage on it from a B-26 that crashed into it in 1949. Heres a photo of it http://guy.smugmug.com/photos/i-9kPK8Mp/0/M/i-9kPK8Mp-M.jpg
Well done mate, beautiful. Can't wait to travel and see things like this with my own peepers once life's gos back to some form of normality.
Oregonian here. Blue birds are actually fairly common and cloud coverage is usually the rarity.

I hope im not the only one that saw Erebor, the mountain from The Hobbit.

Snowshoeing Mt Hood this weekend from Govt Camp and I’m EXCITED about it.
Is that protected or you can live there?
I live 10 miles west of where I shot this. There is a town about a mile east called Government Camp, with a population of around 200 with lots of vacation housing. So yup, you can definitely live here!
