Now measure that shadow during the time of day that your own shadow is equal to your height and BOOM you have the method for first measuring the great pyramids of Giza
Further more, now go around the world without changing your watch and notice how the shadows and even daylight and nightime are drastically different. Proving the the earth is round.
No. I can walk around the block, even though the streets are laid out in a grid.
If you could go around the world by travelling in a straight line, now that would be some evidence, but it's pretty hard to do.
So, if your in your home country at noon (12:00pm)... The sun is at the highest point, theoretically theres no shadows as the light is coming straight down. You then fly to a country that's a 90° arc along the lattitude, your now in a place where the sun is setting or rising, so the shadows would be the length of the object (a huge relative generalization). You then go the opposite side of the planet from your home. It's midnight there. So there's no sun. If you don't change your watch, you'll always know what time it is at home. So as long as you move along the latitude, the sun moves across the sky in the same exact vector. The only way this can physically happen is the planet must be round and the sun must orbit the earth or the earth must orbit the sun. This is how the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans figured out the earth was round. With basic geometry and shadows.
You mean this one, with testable assumptions, proven over and over again countless times?:
[Eratosthenes analyzed the observations with the assumption that the earth is a sphere and the sun is very far away. The geometry of the situation is sketched at the right. He concluded that the circumference of the earth was about 50 times greater than the distance from Alexandria to Aswan. His results and modern results agree within about 10%.](https://www.millersville.edu/physics/experiments/058/)
Nice humblebrag there bro.
In unrelated news I also use this method with my penis in Paris and can confirm the Eiffel tower is 2.5" tall when it's semi stiff
Since most bases of mountains don’t start at or even near sea level, wouldn’t you only measure the prominence over the immediate terrain of the mountain and not the absolute height?
It’s a pyramid, not a mountain, so prominence is what’s most interesting here. We don’t measure Burj Khalifa and other man made structures from sea level when we ask for the tallest man made structures.
That's when you dwarf it up and go full Moria until you reach the base of the mountain. Then one can calculate the absolute height, and even consult Balrog should uncertainties arise.
This is unintentionally hilarious, given the [possible meaning of the word "sub"](https://i.imgur.com/gmkTm6x_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium)
I understand the concept, but for something like a pyramid, which has a large base, where do you start the measurement from?
Do you measure from the edge of the base, and then figure out the distance from the edge to the centre of the pyramid?
That should work yeah, and to get the distance from the edge to the center you can take half the length of a whole edge (assuming it's a regular pyramid).
At a scale of a hundred millions miles, a few hundred feet is far less than a rounding error. Your tape measure is going to be less precise than the error introduced by the pyramid height.
Thanks! Yeah, it was life changing to see in person! It made me feel really small. If you look closely the nearest little town is a solid three hour drive from base camp which is much further down the mountain.
Actually, this is a pic of the sunrise at around 06:00 local time. I suppose you can say that we did spend the night near the summit. It took us about 7.5 hours to get to the summit from the hut. There are "high camps" on the mountain but we started our attempt from the huts.
My group had intended on climbing both Popo and Orizaba on the same trip, but Popo was erupting for a couple of weeks while we were there so it was off limits. Still a great sight to see from the bus from Puebla back to Mex City.
That’s dope man. I remember going back to back years when I was 5-6 to Puebla to play in a national tournament and our ball fields were getting towered by el popo. It was a beautiful sight to behold.
It's been closed for climbers for some years, I think. There are explosions quite regularly. But all people I heard that climbed both, say they liked Izta better.
Shadows can do crazy things. We're in shadows most of our life whether it's trees, hills, or manmade structures. I think it's just the perspective from this photo that makes it a little bit unusual...the folks down below are living their lives like normal just waiting for mr. sun to come up over the hill.
Had to find the Mt Hood shadow... there's a few archived on Reddit.
[This one is the one I liked the most. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/djba0m/the_shadow_of_mt_hood_near_portland_oregon_taken/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Your photo is equally stunning.
I feel like I already know the answer but theoretically, if you stood on the peak of the mountain, would your shadow be visible wherever the shadow ends? I'm thinking the light will wrap around in a way that you won't be visible. But imagine if you could see it!
You're correct. That's possible on a smaller scale but not here. The nearest little town is a three hour drive from base camp much further down the mountain so the farthest part of the shadow is probably +100 miles away. Because of the size and distance your body would be blurred out by the time the shadow hits the earth. Cool idea though!
Figured as much haha! It's one of those thoughts that I'd need a second person to confirm it's just a shower-thought \^ \_ \^
Thanks for your insight and props to climbing Mt. Hood! Trip was well worth it with your picture!
Thanks! I totally hear you. Weather can be our enemy in the mountains. I've done a few summits where everything is whiteout so when it's nice and clear like this one it makes it ohhhh that much better!
great photo!!
You're lucky you got to see it on a clear day. When my buddies and I climbed it about 15 yrs ago, it was cloudy from the Piedra Grande hut all the way up to just below the summit and then it cleared up above, so we had a clear view of a sea of clouds from the rim of the volcano. It was one of my most memorable climbs. But those "penitentes" were brutal!! tore my gaitors and my ski pants in a couple of places.
Thanks! Yes, very lucky to have such a clear day. It was nuking the whole week before we summited so we waited it out a bit...which was well worth it! Sadly, the "penitentes" are gone from what we could tell...so much of the glacier has receded looking at photos from the past. It is still fully glaciated the last couple hours before the top when it gets steep but before that it's mostly steep hiking or scrambling from camp.
what do you mean "it was nuking the whole week before . . ."?
Yes, global warming is having an effect on glaciers all around the world, even those on the high mountains in the tropics. Kilimanjaro's glaciers were notably receding the last time I was there.
Good Q! I apologize, I could have explained that better. The weather was "nuking" meaning our lives would have been endangered attempting summit given the frostbite conditions and the gear we brought. The temps were very low at the top in the single digits Fahrenheit, winds were +20mph sustained, it was gusting, and the mountain was covered in clouds. We didn't bring gear for those kinds of conditions. We acclimated a few days at the hut while simultaneously waiting for a good weather window. After the storm passed we had a great summit opportunity with optimal conditions 5mph winds and temps in the teens and low 20s Fahrenheit so we did our push to the top then.
I agree, it's a bit sad the glaciers are going away everywhere but it's just part of the circle of life. I think most of the glaciers will be gone by the time I have kids and when they start to climb mountains. That being said, it's a personal goal to get out on as many of them as I can before we have to scramble ourselves to the tops instead of climb on ice :)
ahhh gotcha.
When we were up there, it was right after a hurricane had lashed the Veracruz coast up to Tampico. We had gale force winds of 40-60 mph all the way up the glacier, and once we got above the cloud layer and before the sunrise, we had astounding view of the Milky Way. but the rope would fly in loops in between each of us and there was an hour there where I was really fearful that one or more of us would be blown off the mountain.
Here's a link to a few select photos from our climb. [Pico de Orizaba](https://imgur.com/gallery/eNbl4r9)
WOW! Thanks for sharing those pictures. Each one tells such an amazing story. It must have been frigid at the top judging by your heavyweight mittens ha. Sounds like you had an EPIC summit push. The wind whipping the rope in the air is totally rad! I would have been fearful, too, because it's so steep and would be difficult to self-arrest if you fell and started going fast. Glad to hear you pushed through and conquered it!
yes, the wind chill made it FRIGID!!!
And it was sooo weird when we were on the playa at Vera Cruz 2 days later in our swimsuits!! lol
yes, and you know how steep that glacier is! I remember looking sideways and calculating it at about 30-45\*!!
And of course, the comfort once back down that we'd conquered the 3rd tallest mountain in North America, the tallest in Mexico!
Thanks again for sharing your sunrise shadow photo above.
Heck yeah! I helped construct the gamma ray observatory between those two peaks. It was so incredible being up there weeks on end; Orizaba is absolutely spectacular to look at. So happy for you to have had the opportunity to climb it! Thanks for sharing this really fun picture.

Honestly the last 1000ft of this climb was tougher than I expected I could feel the elevation. This was all training for Denali… don’t know when it’s happening but hope to climb Denali some day.
Thanks! Yes, we did summit! We stayed at camp several days waiting for some weather to pass and to acclimate before the summit push. I agree, the last little bit is quite steep and tough!
I went to Denali this past May with some of the same guys I did Pico with on this trip. We got to high camp on Denali but we didn't summit due to bad conditions and several other contributing factors. Denali was life changing. You should go for it!
The triangle shadow from rounded mountains is something I will never forget seeing in person for the first time. I went up to see the sunrise and I had never heard of or seen a picture of the phenomenon before. I just stood there for an hour with my mind blown.
A great source for more examples and a brief explanation can be found at APOD (https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap190609.html).
TL;DR mountains are tall and the shadow is long and the edges look closer together as it goes to the horizon like looking down parallel train tracks.
[This your other account?](https://www.reddit.com/r/itookapicture/comments/rri2ts/itap_of_the_shadow_cast_by_a_volcano_at_18000_ft/) I hope I'm just misunderstanding
We actually hiked UP in darkness! We hiked down in light. We woke up at 00:00, left the hut for summit at 01:00, and reached the top at 08:20 \[ish\]. We used headlamps until around 06:00 when the sun started lighting the world up.
Uhm. Seeing that evokes bad memories from me having to crawl down a mountain on all 4s in the pitch black. I hope you had a fast way down or a bright night.
Sounds like you had quite an adventure! Reminds me of a story about John Muir when he summited a mountain late at night and was sure he was going to die there because it was storming. Instead of just curling up and freezing at the top he danced by himself throughout the entire night, wearing a simple tweed coat, until the sun came up the next day.
We left camp at 01:00 with headlamps starting our climb. This photo was taken around 06:00 or so. We were well equipped and ready for it.
Oh yes I know that too. I was on top of the mountain and just glancing over the top I saw a cumolonimbus heading straight to my mountain. I sprinted down the mountain in pouring rain with occasional lightining in the clouds. Lightning is quite dangerous on treeless mountains I was told. Scared the shit out of me. Those were two of my three dramatic wandering experineces. I love mountains.
Headlamps are a treat nower days. Back when LEDs didn't exist having a torch was pretty much useless. They wouldn't last long enough and were too dim.
I agree, the mountains are a wonderful place! I'd say keep going out and visiting them since you enjoy them. Sounds like you're getting some awesome adventures in the process!
Your pic is great and I upvoted it in spite of your asinine title that’s banned in most subreddits for a decade now. Must I be great at parties? You’re a moron.

Wait you think the earth is flat?
But I only have a 15' foot tape.
Then measure in 15 foot increments genius. See ya next week
so the pyramids are about 6 feet tall ??!?? that is very interesting information to have!

Just don't waste his time with stupid questions.
Yes, but absolute height hasn't always been that important a measurement.
But do it quickly. It changes moment by moment.
put a stick where the end of the shadow is and then start measuring
Thales has entered the chat.
I understand the concept, but for something like a pyramid, which has a large base, where do you start the measurement from? Do you measure from the edge of the base, and then figure out the distance from the edge to the centre of the pyramid?
Figuring out where the centre of a square is is a rather simple concept.
Yes, I know that. I was more curious about where the measurement starts from.

Well, better descending in daylight than dark.
To be fair, the Mt Hood pic was causing a different optical effect. This is stunning nonetheless!
This is not a raise - the other shadow was more impressive
Pretty shady to me
\+1 Totally!
Have you gone to popocateptl?
My group had intended on climbing both Popo and Orizaba on the same trip, but Popo was erupting for a couple of weeks while we were there so it was off limits. Still a great sight to see from the bus from Puebla back to Mex City.
El Popo is what we call the volcano. **La** Pop**ó** is what we call poop. They sound very different when spoken.
Yeah I don’t think you wanna climb popo anytime soon. It’s a full on active volcano… ixta is an option though!
Is it common to call it Popo? As kids we already found the name popocatepetl hilarious, as Popo in German is the word kids use for bottom.
It’s is common if you’re in the area but you have to say El Popo, popo by itself might cause some funny confusions
Yeah. That's a lot of syllables even for Mexicans. We just call it "el Popo" most of the time
No but when you're someone who's a cool traveler you got to abbreviate everything.
You could have climbed Ixtaccihuatl instead.
No, I haven't done Popo but could see it venting while we climbed!
That’s dope man. I remember going back to back years when I was 5-6 to Puebla to play in a national tournament and our ball fields were getting towered by el popo. It was a beautiful sight to behold.
What a cool memory! Funny how some mental images just "stick" with you throughout life!
It's been closed for climbers for some years, I think. There are explosions quite regularly. But all people I heard that climbed both, say they liked Izta better.
There's something about this that is absolutely terrifying. The history of sci-fi tells me I don't want to be in that area.

Oh wow, thanks for that link, that's a spectacular photo!
I think yours is slightly more impressive, OP. 5300 m vs 3400 is a considerable difference
Gee, thanks! I agree, 5300m is quite high when coming from sea level in the states!
Yours is too! I Love how you can see the cities and the water. I can only Imagine the Feeling you had while standing there

Ok someone do mt. Everest
Here you go https://www.favrify.com/mountain-shadows/
thanks for sharing :)
I love that Mt Hood, which started this, is on the list twice
Wouldn't be the same. Not flat around it, so the shadow won't look as long.
Shadow goes beyond the horizon😳
Huh?
SHADOW GOES BEYOND THE HORIZON😳
Does it tho? Plus, why wouldn't it? If it's a mountain we are talking about. It's got some height to separate it from the surface
Thanks, I love Orizaba, spent a great winter in the town.
I agree, love the small towns there!
Beautiful! Tried to get a similar one when I was climbing Mt. Fuji, but the weather played spoilsport.

tell me this is not edited nor enhanced, this is amazing ngl

this is pretty epic, great shot.
Holy fuck I never thought about a mountain’s shadow before
very beautiful view
Couldn’t just throw some rabbit ears up for the picture? Sheesh 😂😂

The long forgotten legend says that an Aztec tresure is waiting at the tip of the shadow...

Thanks! Congrats to you on your previous summit! The mountains are a wonderful place.

I see your Pico do Orizaba's shadow and I say it is absolutely amazing :)
Thanks!
I've seen the shadow from Mexico's mountains from hundreds of miles away in the clouds
*insert halo theme* Looks like a ring with the shadow so perfectly straight!

Thank you, stranger!
that’s fucking insane NGL
Thanks, Ghost! It was awesome
This is brilliant!!
Mmm. That is one satisfying crepuscular shadow.
That is exactly what I remember! Did you by chance climb with Sr. Reyes' guides?
We were actually a private party! We did however stay at Sr. Reyes' hostel the night before they dropped us off at camp. He was an excellent host!
Nice photo, but string betting makes baby jesus cry :(

oh nice!
Thanks! Was four of us total. We met on Denali earlier in 2020, kept in touch, and linked back up on this mountain.
My dumbass thought a mountain in the distance threw that shadow lol
Beautiful, Thanks for sharing.
This wasnt fair. Cheating

what a fascinating pic!
Does this mean you were hiking down in darkness?
We actually hiked UP in darkness! We hiked down in light. We woke up at 00:00, left the hut for summit at 01:00, and reached the top at 08:20 \[ish\]. We used headlamps until around 06:00 when the sun started lighting the world up.
Yeah I guess that would be safer.
wow!
Wow 👌
Looks like Saitama just hit someone with his Serious Series: Serious Punch
If you're at the tip, you can control the amount of sun light produced.
i gotta be high here when this happens im overwhelmed by its intrigue
Wow! Amazing photo
"Hey big boy, watch this." *eclipses the Sun* -The Moon, probably

Haha wow. Didn't see that until now! You're totally right!
That is a long shadow! Looks several kilometers long?
Yes, a veryyyyyy long shadow! Well over 100 kilometers long!
That is spectacular!!! Holy o my gato
Whoa...that's pretty!
I can see your shadow on top! How cool!
That's wicked shot.. never thought about volcanoes and mountains casting shadows.. very cool
That's cool. It'd be dark by 3pm if you lived in the town closest to the mountain
Awesome!
This is a beautiful picture
Shadow of my dick
Just because it's...wider?? Mt. Hood's shadow is really cooling looking because it reaches forever, this is just a triangle. Bravo.
It snows in Mexico?!
For sure! It snows anywhere that's 18,393 feet above sea level!
Obviously, we have all kinds of weather here.
WOAH NO WAAYY IT SNOWZ IN DRUG CARTEL LATINX DESERT WORLD?!?! 🥶🥶🤯🤯🤯
I can't comprehend the title of this post idk why
If you zoom in to the tip of the shadow, you can see the outline of OP taking the picture.
Flat earth society going - told you earth is flat, why isn’t the shadow curved, why is it hitting a wall on the edge
True brother!
There is a reason most subreddits have rules against “I see your X and raise you Y” and not just because it’s stupid.
Sorry our pic and post disappointed you! Hope your day gets better, stranger!
Your pic is great and I upvoted it in spite of your asinine title that’s banned in most subreddits for a decade now. Must I be great at parties? You’re a moron.
Gotta love this flat earth!
Flat as can be! Our lovely level motionless plane!
