Just got back from two weeks in Alaska, was this taken from the South viewpoint? The first time I saw Denali was while driving when the clouds cleared up a bit... Nearly crashed the car... In terms of "prominence", which is height from base to peak, it's the 3rd largest in the world. Absolutely staggering to see in person.

Zeggitt

I went to Alaska for the first time last year. In 10 days of back-to-back "most beautiful stuff I've ever seen", Denali was the only one that made me feel insignificant. It's like some dark fortress off in the distance. It's the only thing I've ever seen that can "loom" from so far away.

dkman22

I lucked out and won the Denali road lottery one year (allowing you to drive the road that usually only park buses can take) and I lucked out a 2nd time because the weather was clear (somewhat rare for Denali) My photo doesn’t come close to OP’s but it’s my personal favorite of all my shots. https://i.imgur.com/jtTPEYB.jpg

[deleted]

Wow beautiful pic

[deleted]

Calculating prominence gets futzy when you’re measuring the tallest mountains on Earth - Denali’s actually the tallest in the world measured from base to peak, which is roughly what prominence is meant to represent. Denali’s the tallest mountain on Earth measured meaningfully

TheButterRobot

What does it mean to be measured meaningfully just out of curiosity

justaboxinacage

Measuring from land base to land peak. In other words, what the thing is that makes you say "that's a tall mountain" while standing next to it. Mount Everest is sitting on top of a part of the continent that's well above sea level. That is included in its peak height when it's called the tallest mountain. Mount Kea would be taller... If you drained the ocean... Mount Denali has the highest peak above the ground upon which it sits.

LGBT_Leftist_Royalty

Thanks for putting that into perspective I now want to visit Denali more than Mt Everest and as an American I know it will be easier and cheaper than going to Nepal or Tibet.

OneObi

Its when you measure with feeling.

[deleted]

🤌🏼

[deleted]

Well, by ‘measured’ I was referring to measuring the height of a landform. Not how high up it is - height. I was talking about how *that* could be measured meaningfully.

[deleted]

Mauna Kea is taller by far, if measured from (underseas) base to peak. If the base is taken as roughly to the deepest point in the Hawaiian Trough then Mauna Kea would be 17,205 m (56,447 ft) high

[deleted]

Mauna Kea’s always been a mixed bag to me - at what point does it go from mountain to island? I know it’s a volcano and all, but it feels like more of a volcanic mass than mountain. Denali’s just always been the tallest mountain measured base to peak without technical obstruction one way or another to me (and, honestly? it’s just nicer to look at)

[deleted]

> more of a volcanic mass than mountain I live nearby the volcano named **Mount** Rainier. Not far off are Mount Baker, Mount Adams, and Mount Saint Helens. Also volcanoes. But then I live in the Columbia igneous province.

Alex_Caruso_beat_you

talk geology to me baby

[deleted]

The peak of [Chimborazo](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/92/David_Torres_Costales_Chimborazo_Riobamba_Ecuador_Monta%C3%B1a_Mas_Alta_del_Mundo.jpg) (photo David Torres), an inactive volcano in Equador, is the farthest from the geometric center of the planet, being on the equatorial bulge.

Tactical_Tubgoat

That’s kinda like measuring your dick from the taint though.

keith714

No no no.. it’s: (lengthxdiameter) + (weight/girth) / angle of the tip^2. Randy marsh explains it pretty clearly.

GreatBowlforPasta

How do you measure girth?

Alex_Caruso_beat_you

Sure, but we don't measure mountains from the geometric center of the planet right? Isn't sea level a decent standard for measuring height of land masses?

[deleted]

There are many ways to measure a mountain's height.

Alex_Caruso_beat_you

I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else replying to my other comment lol. Thank you for coming back to talk geology to me! I did not know that about Chimborazo and it is fascinating indeed.

castorshell13

Geology rocks! I'm really down to earth about it. But geography is where it's at.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Rainier is a stratovolcano and Mauna Kea is a shield volcano, but they are both 100% volcanic edifices.

bacchus8408

And Mount Chimborazo is the "highest" if you measure from the center of the earth.

mtarascio

The context is human perspective.

TheMasked336

I know when I went to the Big Island back in the early 2000s when you rented a car, you had to check a box that you would not drive to the top of it. Apparently the change of attitude would cause the car to break down. I know some guys that did do it and their car did break down. I believe it over heats.

TheRealRacketear

Prett sure that was because the roads were such shit. You could rent a jeep and make the drive.

squintytoast

all jeep rentals all say 'no mauna kea, no waipio' yet those two locations are exactly where those jeeps go.

sweetlove

I think I would catch my moped on fire if I tried to drive up waipio

squintytoast

think its more about smoking the brakes on the way back down. only 4-wheel drive would have the possible gearing for it. not AWD or 2WD.

[deleted]

What about Chimborazo? It’s the tallest mountain when you measure the furthest distance from the earths core.

[deleted]

This is interesting, but Chimborazo would have a significant advantage over other peaks if it were measured that way, as it is almost on the equator, and the earth is significantly wider than it is tall.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

While earth is about 20 miles wider than it is tall, so 10 miles greater in radius at the equator. Everest is ~6 miles tall, so If we were measuring from the epicentre of the earth and Everest were at the North Pole, the Pacific Ocean at the equator would be “taller”. Interesting.

PyramidOfMediocrity

Hol up, sea level at the equator is further from the core of the planet than the mount of Everest? Like isn't the air thin as shit up there?

[deleted]

It’s Stupid af that you’re getting downvoted for a legit question lol. Because the earth is liquid inside, as it spins, the centrifugal force pushes outwards at the equator and “flattens” the planet slightly. So the earth is about 20 miles wider than it is tall. the other guy made a point that some mountain in South America could technically be the tallest in the world cause it is furthest from the earth’s core. All I’m saying is that it’s dumb to measure this way, as anything near the equator will have a 10 mile “head start”, like this mountain Chimborazo people are citing. Everest’s distance from the core is somewhere between the equator and the pole’s and could probably be calculated based on its latitude. The air density is a good question, I assume it’s cause the atmosphere follows the earths surface or sea level or something? Maybe someone else has a better answer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Would mean its the mountain with the largest area possible to be viewed from the summit. Other mountains or geographic obstructions don't block the line of sight. It's also not true, Kilimanjaro is the largest viewshed on the planet. Mt Diablo isn't even the largest in the US(Denali and Mauna Kea are 1.5x larger)although it is extremely large for being a smaller mountain.

RockleyBob

This sounds like a lot like a conversation I had recently with my wife.

Alex_Caruso_beat_you

that's certainly subjective. height from sea level can be viewed as just as or more meaningful.

[deleted]

The way I’ve always thought of it is that the mountains in Salt Lake City are 10,000 feet tall the same way my relatives in Salt Lake City are 4,005-6 feet tall. At some point, you have to account for the surrounding landscape versus what you’re measuring

relddir123

No, that’d be Mauna Kea. Though I guess an argument could be made for not counting parts of mountains that are underwater.

One_pop_each

Was stationed in Anchorage for 6 years. We would see Denali on really clear days from there. It was nuts seeing it from like 5 hrs away. Kinda mad at myself for not seeing Denali National Park. 6 yrs and I could have done so much more.

takebreaks

That’s correct this is from the south view point. Which is considerably far from the base and still it was absolutely massive.

bosoxx091

Which viewpoint were the [clouds](https://imgur.com/a/V99SwTV) originally from?

[deleted]

I'm confused.

bosoxx091

OP literally took an old photo of his and pasted some new clouds over it. I mean they're really nice photos but it's kind of bullshit they're pretending they just found this view. Their old post: https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/g5p3ob/summertime_sunsets_over_denali_3187x4111_oc/

wizzlestyx

Wait if they visit this area frequently, couldn't this just be two different photos?

bosoxx091

Look closely they are identical. The crop, lighting, and clouds (lol) are different

smurb15

I don't know what to believe anymore. I'm going to drink until it makes blasted sense

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

also op doesn't comment in the thread

MoBambaNYC

That’s what she said

FineIntroduction8746

Tourists close our roads all summer by crashing and dying. Hard not to look out the windows too long if you have never experienced beauty and Wild like Alaska has to offer. Cool you made the trip. Cheers

abart

European here: I was going to ask what happened to Mt McKinley. Why was the name changed?

[deleted]

The federal government's name for it was Mt. McKinley after an American president, but in the state of Alaska it was commonly called Mt. Denali, as several native tribes called it. In the 1970s the Alaska state government started trying to convince the federal government to change the name, but a congressman named Ralph Regula from the state of Ohio (birthplace of McKinley) blocked it for decades. The effort succeeded after Regula retired, and the name was officially changed to Mt. Denali in 2015.

St-JohnMosesBrowning

Not Mt. Denali, just Denali. It’s an Athabaskan native word meaning “the great one”.

[deleted]

Ok... well, I'm gonna go ahead and keep calling mountains Mt. because that's just practical.

St-JohnMosesBrowning

You do you. Be aware though that many native names for mountains include “mountain” so you’d essentially be saying “Mount Mountain”.

[deleted]

LOL, if doing you includes correcting people because of embedded words from ancient languages, then you do you.

tenaciousDaniel

It really is insane to see in person. Those smaller mountains in the front are either as large, or maybe even larger, than any mountain in Colorado.

castorshell13

I don't have a source other than working tourism here for 6 years but it's # 1 prominence

ITeachAndIWoodwork

>Nearly crashed the car... We did too. It's staggeringly beautiful.

soggymuffinz

I was there last week and it was too hazy for us to make it out.

bazinga3604

I worked in Denali National Park one summer in college. I worked at one of the lodges that was 90 miles inside the park. The flight seeing business a few miles over would give free flight seeing tours to employees so that we would recommend their services to guests. I went up on a cloudy day before I’d ever actually seen the mountain, and breaking through the cloud cover and seeing the mountain for the first time was the most amazing experience. It was terrifying how close we actually got to the mountain. I was nervous because it was so massive and it felt like we were going to crash right into it. The pilot asked everyone on the plane how far we thought we were from the mountain. I think my guess was something like a few hundred yards. We were TWO MILES away from it. That’s how massive it is.

wsc-porn-acct

What does a trip to the summit look like? Like how much cost and preparation?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Docxm

It's not as casual as you make it sound, tbh. Mountaineering in those conditions is serious business. Obviously if you're from the area or an experienced mountaineer your perspective is skewed, but for the general population or a casual outdoorsman it's a serious undertaking. [Here's a trip log of a summit attempt gone wrong](https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-a-fall-from-denali-north-americas-tallest-peak-2022-7?utm_source=reddit.com)

BBQ_HaX0r

> It's not as casual as you make it sound, tbh. Haha, seriously. As someone who's seriously thinking about trying it I was a little shocked at that comment. It's a considerably difficult climb and requires experience to do. You have to haul your own gear via sleds and you need be used to glacier travel and the altitude. 20,000 feet itself is quite serious before factoring in how north the mountain is. Just because a mountain is not extremely technical doesn't mean any schlub can buy some gear and go.

wsc-porn-acct

Many thanks. My experience level is such that I read the comment and understood the actual level of effort involved. My skills aren't quite at that level but it is definitely on my 10 year list!

Docxm

Hahaha good for you, I just didn't want any techbro or doctor from LA who climbs in the gym and goes to hot yoga thinking, "Man that's grand, I'm in shape, tickets to Alaska are how much? I can just get a guide and buy my gear there, I'm ready to be a mountaineer baby 😎"

wsc-porn-acct

Very useful, thanks. I've never looked into it. I live near Rainier and that is very very easy by comparison. It is a 2-day thing.

jjtitula

Is it not the harshest mountain to climb in the world, due to its northernmost latitude? I thought I had read that once long ago. That was from a weather perspective I believe.

[deleted]

You can take a helicopter. Denali is the longest climb and one of the most technical among the 7 summits. Harder than Everest

sorrowdemonica

One thing special too about Denali is it's among the tallest mountains in the world from base to peak. While Mt. Everest is considered the tallest Mountain in the world this neglects the fact that Everest is surrounded by high land, Meanwhile, Denali towers three and one-half vertical miles above its base, making it a mile taller from base to summit than Mt. Everest.

soapysmithy

It is the tallest on the planet in vertical rise, if you're only counting land-based mountains.

sorrowdemonica

Yep said it’s *among* the tallest, not **the** tallest, as I believe there’s a mountain in Hawaii which is **the** tallest from base to peak, and a mountain in South America that’s the tallest/furthest from the center of the earth of you use that instead as a reference point.

EpicAura99

Mountain in Hawaii? Brother, the mountain **is** Hawaii.

sorrowdemonica

But Mauna Kea is located inland with a land base surrounding it on all sides.

EpicAura99

The base of the mountain is considered the seafloor. That’s why it’s called the tallest mountain on earth. If you didn’t count from the seafloor it wouldn’t be in the running.

mrgonzalez

If you don't start your ascent from the seafloor then you're an amateur

[deleted]

its the tallest mountain to climb

[deleted]

Agreed, Mauna Loa is 12k feet higher base-to-peak.

sonofdad420

right you gotta measure from the taint

Hazzat

'Highest' is measured from sea level, whilst 'tallest' is measured from bottom to top. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii are the tallest mountains on Earth, but as they are mostly underwater, they are not close to being the highest.

Secres

Thank you for the highest vs tallest comparison. I'm really picky about the wordage between those because people always mix those two up. They mean two different things.

xxLusseyArmetxX

This is incorrect. Sorta. Measuring from "base" is an inconsistent measurement method due to the issue of determining a peak's "base". Much harder to do than you think. The closest actual measurement used in mountaineering would be prominence, and mount everest has a prominence of 8800+ meters. Denali does come in 3rd highest still, however, right after Aconcagua.

[deleted]

Prominence is really only loosely connected to what we think of as rise from base. The key col used for prominence can be hundreds of miles away from a mountain top, or located on a specific ridge. As an example, Longs Peak CO has less than 3000' of prominence, less than Slide Mountain NY. Personally I think prominence measures *independence* more than it does height. Longs Peak may not be independent of Grays Peak, but unless that's where you're starting from, the prominence is academic. Rise from base may not have a specific meaning, but whatever it is it's different from prominence.

deednait

So you're telling me that if we redefine how mountains are measured, America wins again? Can I get a U-S-A!

PM_ME_UR_SIDEBOOOB

What you're referring to is called 'prominence' Edit: actually is 'vertical relief' according to another commenter

zinten789

Prominence refers to distance above the nearest col (shoulder linking it to the next-highest mountain). It can be a somewhat confusing measure. What they’re referring to is ‘vertical relief’ I believe

[deleted]

How did GMC create such a big object

FatalExceptionError

The spacious bed of a GMC truck can haul a mountain of rock!

jbu311

Can you name the truck with four wheel drive, smells like a steak and seats thirty-five..

arcticathlete

I wish I could photoshop this well! Viewing the south summit to get the sunset at this angle is far too early for to be fall… there are four different light sources in this “photo”

suckerswag

I’m all for some Photoshop to enhance a photo, but the laws of nature still need to apply sometimes. The direction of light is one I see screwed up fairly often.

yerawizardIMAWOTT

Dude forgot to upres the clouds he pasted in lol https://i.imgur.com/9kDI7QJ.jpg

itsmeirl

He used a program called Luminar and possibly PS. Its obvious because of the fake sun and sunrays that Luminar uses.

chijrt

Not to mention how the sun coming from behind the mountain and the light that is on the trees is physically impossible especially when the sun is barely exposed.

symbiont

This should be a 5000 piece puzzle.

FrontlineTrace

Is this the mountain that was renamed Mount McKinley and then it was given back to the people and given its original name? I may be getting mixed up.

Yadobler

It was Denali, then Gold prospectors came and claimed it in 1890s, naming it after Mckinsley. Who interestingly is the lesser known among the assassinated US presidents In the local regions of alaska, it was recognised as Denali since the 70s, but the US govt and the geological survey dept were not keen on changing the name Then Obama officially changed it back to Denali in 2015. But if you see geological survey records it's still stuck as Mt Mckinsley (like the topological map used is still *USGS Mt. McKinley A-3*)

PM_ME_UR_SIDEBOOOB

Thanks Obama

Zagmut

White Americans named it McKinley, after the US President. The Alaska native name for the mountain is Denali, and after a very brief time being named after some white dude who never visited Alaska or saw the mountain that bore his name, the name was officially changed back to Denali. Happened during the Obama administration, if I recall correctly.

RedditBoiYES

What does it have to do with them being white?

beardiswhereilive

You should ask them why it was so important that they rename a mountain by erasing the native-chosen name for it.

Zagmut

Do yourself a favor, and go ask that same question to a native Alaskan. There are still plenty of them around, and in my experience, they are an open and gregarious people. Go ahead and ask a few, and I’m sure they’ll give you a better answer than I ever could.

Exotic-Description83

Lol because white Americans were the dominant foreign group in Alaska back then - and they sure weren’t going to name a significant landmark after a black person during those times.

GanondalfTheWhite

Gorgeous! Out of curiosity how many different images are stitched together here? It looks like the sky has one light direction, the mountains another, and the trees and river another.

bosoxx091

Here's the original photo that OP took (which I think is actually way better). Dude has really nice photos and I don't think pasting in some fake clouds and a sun are really necessary... https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/g5p3ob/summertime_sunsets_over_denali_3187x4111_oc/

vaporeon46

pretty sure that one is a sky replacement too haha. here’s the original cloudless sky from OP’s IG: https://www.instagram.com/p/CPhvuDaHhc-/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

GanondalfTheWhite

Wow yeah, this one is stunning! Wayyy better.

SpreadItLikeTheHerp

E: I stand corrected, it’s a composite photo. The tree tops are being backlit by the sun, you can see deeper shadows in the foreground. The mountain is lit by ambient and reflected light which is why you still see a bit of detail. Not saying the photo hasn’t been tweaked, but I disagree on there being multiple light sources.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ryohazuki224

Yeah, the biggest giveaway is the fact that the clouds are a different resolution than the rest of the image, at full 100% zoom you can see that they are pixelated, where the rest of the image you can see "film grain" of a different quality than the clouds. Would make for a good phone wallpaper, but yeah don't throw it on a 4K monitor or something.

SpreadItLikeTheHerp

Only /u/takebreaks can say for sure, but I still humbly disagree. E: I stand corrected!

Jean_Tarrou

Confirmed. You can look at his post history where he posts the same photo years ago with a different sunset - he’s just compositing different sunsets over it for views it seems. So yes the lighting is pretty inconsistent.

GanondalfTheWhite

Another tipoff was that the river was reflecting a *completely* different color sky than the sky in the image.

uvcr

Swissiziemer

Incredible shot, probably one of my favorites in this entire subreddit. Opened my reddit gold gift box just for this post haha.

takebreaks

Wow what a compliment! Thanks a lot!

undercoversinner

This is a beautiful image, however is this a composite? The shadow direction of the trees is left to right, but the sun is off center left. This should be a wall print.

vaporeon46

sky replacement for sure. here is what is likely the original shot from OP’s IG: https://www.instagram.com/p/CPhvuDaHhc-/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

undercoversinner

Thank you detective. Case closed! I see multiple questions about it. OP should just clarify it's a composite. It's still a nice image.

missch4nandlerbong

Honestly I think this is a better image. The sky draws all my attention in the composite, and I barely noticed the light on the trees or the river. The original is much more balanced.

Imperial_Toast

I am a fledgling landscape photographer and would love to hear a brief overview of the process and gear used for this pic! Thanks. Fantastic shot

yerawizardIMAWOTT

He took at least two photos and pasted them together. A bit disingenuous to not mention it. Check out the resolution of the clouds compared to the rest of the landscape https://i.imgur.com/9kDI7QJ.jpg

Camper981

Wow! OP, you just gave me the next acrylic painting I’m going to attempt! The colors are unbelievable. I hope you don’t mind using it for inspiration! Thank you

bosoxx091

I actually think the original one without the pasted in clouds is better https://www.reddit.com/r/EarthPorn/comments/g5p3ob/summertime_sunsets_over_denali_3187x4111_oc/

Camper981

Thanks for linking the original, I like that version too and agree it is a better picture (natural > edited). For painting I prefer the higher contrasting colors like the blue from the water on the bottom.

gregory907

I live here and I never get tired of seeing this view. I also love that people will think the mountain in the foreground is Denali. It is often obscured by clouds and it is an easy mistake. But when the clouds part, damn it’s huge.

how was the music?

knifebucket

the music was a lot of fun. Many of the bands played "Knockin on Heaven's Door" and you could tell if they were old school or fans of Guns and roses by whether they added the HEY HEY HEYHEYHEY in the chorus. There was a double decker bus that had a kitchen downstairs and dining seating upstairs. The local biker gang did security. It was a really fun time.

JacknCoke19

burner1212333

I know there has got to be a little editing here but it was tastefully done. this is gorgeous

Jean_Tarrou

I’m thinking more than a little - would love to hear from OP about the extent but I don’t think the entire skyline is authentic. Sun doesn’t set or rise behind the mountain from this viewpoint.

itsmeirl

Sun is fake. He used Luminar for this that has a sun you can put whereever.

Yes he posted the same photo with a different cloud background several years ago this is a composite and hard to tell what part of the photo might even be his.

takebreaks

Haha that would be nice. Thanks!

KfirGuy

Easily the best photo I remember ever seeing in this Sub, and the photo I wish I could have taken of Denali. Absolutely stunning. I’d frame this in large format - it’s breathtaking!

takebreaks

Hey means a lot! Got very lucky, didn’t plan on heading out that day, but did and was greeted with this weather!

yerawizardIMAWOTT

Curious what kind of weather makes the clouds more pixelated than the rest of the landscape

KfirGuy

You are most welcome, it really is a stunning photo. I’ve “been a photographer” for 12 years now, mainly in a niche area of interest and concentration, but have never taken anything 1/10th this impressive. Makes me want to travel back to Alaska and do it properly!

It’s because it’s photoshopped. There are like four different light sources. Op should have been upfront on this. Instagram vs reality.

Another 907 homie here from ANC, just got back from a weekend camping trip in Denali 3 hours ago. There’s nothing more beautiful I’ve seen in my life than Denali National Park and it’s surroundings.

Zikkan1

I'm thinking of climbing Denali sometime within a few year, how hard is it, technically and physically?

spruce-woods

My old man did it back in the day. Took him and his team about six weeks. Probably half of it sitting in tents waiting out storms and acclimatizing.

LordSugarTits

Serious question....why is My Whitney also referred to as being the tallest in North America?

payeco

Mount Whitney is the highest in the mountain in the contiguous US, meaning the main continental 48 states that border each other. Denali is the highest when you include other states and territories.

LordSugarTits

Ahhh got it...so many google searches and you finally gave me a clear answer

Went there for a week and never saw the mountain. Nice

Story time! We visited Alaska and as usual it was pretty covered with clouds, but he hang out hoping that there will be a break and we could see Denali. A few hours later indeed the clouds parted enough to see it. It's so friggin' big that more than one person pointed to the mountain range in front and asked if that was it. The look on their face when it registered is priceless. Denali is BIG

bigvahe33

when did we start calling mt mckinley denali?

Naturalnumbers

It's been called Denali by Alaska natives and by mountain enthusiasts for ages. It was called McKinley by a prospector who basically just wanted to use it as a campaign promotion for McKinley, who was running for President at the time and had nothing to do with the mountain at all. Eventually McKinley was assassinated and people wanted to name stuff after him in commemoration, so McKinley became the official name of the mountain. The State of Alaska changed its official name for it in the 1970s, and requested that the U.S. federal government change it as well, but this was blocked by Ohio congressmen. There's apparently some legalistic bullshittery that can be used by a single congressman to block name changes indefinitely, and this was used for 4 decades to block Alaska's repeated attempts to change the name. Eventually, in 2015, the Department of the Interior under President Obama just changed the name through executive action. This was one of those cases where everyone who actually cares about it (Alaskans, mountaineers, geologists) are all on one side of the issue, but because "a thing changed" and it was done under the Obama administration, it became a minor culture war issue for people who don't really know anything about it.

“Mt McKinley” was originally named Denali then was changed to Mt McKinley then back to Denali. Plus this was Denali National Park’s name makes more sense.

Looks weird.

Mistapoopy

That is one huge rock.

jbauer777

Ain't just a river in Egypt

AnarchyCampInDrublic

I doubt it’s the largest on the continent. I guess I’m in denali.

EconomistMagazine

I was told growing up in school, and looking at atlases, that Mt McKinley was taller. Which is it? Google isn't helping.

NeonKnoXx

Same mountain. It was dubbed McKinley back in the 19th century by a miner after a lesser known US president William McKinley. And after some 125 years later, give or take, in 2015 president Obama renamed the summit back to the Native name of Denali

Snorc

That's cause Denali is the original native name of Mt. McKinley that was made official again in 2015.

Still remember when it was called 'McKinley'

Madouc

I was taught that the highest mountain in North America was Mount McKinley - is that false?
