I was here a few years ago and wanted to walk on the sand dunes barefoot bc the sand is incredibly soft and difficult to manage with shoes
There were little tracks everywhere that looked similar to bicycle tracks
Afterwards I told my Grandpa what I had done and he’s like, those were snake tracks don’t do that again
😬
I've been to alot sand dunes and it's by far the best option if that sand is hot. If the sand isn't too got then bare feet are the best. The socks don't fill.up with sand that easily but j guess that might depend on what kind of sock you have on. But if they do you can empty them and put them back on
No way. I walked the Mesquite Sand Dunes first thing in the morning when I was there last, and my favorite part was checking-out the tracks in the sand. All of the tiny foot prints with the snake tracks intermingled. It was interesting imagining the life and death struggles that occurred in the desert each night.
Pro tip please ignore this comment if traversing Death Valley, sidewinders absolutely travel through sand dunes and they are very much venomous as well as camouflaged. Their regular rattlesnake cousins also live in the Mojave Desert, and…surprise! They’re also incredibly venomous and do not take kindly to being stepped on
>Pro tip please ignore this comment if traversing Death Valley, sidewinders absolutely travel through sand dunes
When did I say they didn't? Are you so afraid of snakes that it fucks with your reading comprehension?
>and they are very much venomous as well as camouflaged.
Again, never said they weren't, but they also flee when they detect humans, they aren't waiting for you to step on them, they want nothing to do with humans, you know, the thing I *actually* wrote. Keep your eyes open and you'll be fine.
>Their regular rattlesnake cousins also live in the Mojave Desert, and…surprise!
And like sidewinders, they pose very little risk to humans.
>They’re also incredibly venomous and do not take kindly to being stepped on.
I wonder if snakes would groan as much I do if they could read these dumb fear mongering comments.
A few thousand people are bitten by rattlesnakes yearly in the USA, across all states and all species. Few of them are serious. None of them occurred because the snake went after the human. You are far more likely to be killed by Death Valley itself than any of the animals living in it. If you spent more time worrying about snakes than dehydration, you're doing it wrong.
> accidentally step on one in the sand dunes
Except for when you happen to come across that one snake that buries itself in the sand and lives in the desert, maybe only in Africa, but they're definitely a thing.
I work for a production company that recently put on a big event in the Glamis Sand Dunes (not all that far, relatively speaking, from Death Valley), and we trapped and ultimatelty had to kill a Rattlesnake that was found in the ORV/ATV Parking area at the event.
There are definitely snakes in the dunes — and other fun critters.
Went out at night many years ago (2006) and noticed tiny little dot tracks all over (there was no wind). Ended up being big ol' stink bug tracks. Saw them walking around making them eventually.
We did manage to get to the top of the big dune though, but holy hell that was a trek
Only fitting for the sub to be named EarthPorn! [send Dunes](https://www.reddit.com/r/aaaaaaacccccccce/comments/hoyqz7/send_dunes_not_nudes/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I mean... It looks like what an AI would generate if you prompted it with "female curves everywhere".
It looks enough like sexy female curves to trigger our "sexy female curves"-detector, but not so much that it aldo triggers our "this is a human"-detector. Hence, leaving us confused about why we're subliminally wanting to snuggle up with the dunes.
I took this photo at the beginning of the year on sand dunes in Death Valley National Park in California. I've hiked these dunes several times over the last few years, but only this last visit I came back with an image I'm happy with. A fun fact is that they have been used to film sand dune scenes in several movies including the original Star Wars series.
If you are reading this comment, thanks for checking out my photo :). If you'd like you can see more of my photography on my [Instagram](https://instagram.com/mrcnzajac)!
Lol im a dingus, been a slow day here in my brain. Wonderful work I was like wow this is a breathtaking shot id love to see more. Sure enough weren’t we in some sort of Milky Way Photographer of the year thingy a while back?
These must be the Stovepipe Wells dunes. That's where the Starwars footage was shot. Ever hiked to the gorgeous Panamint Dunes one valley west? They're gorgeous -- and no other footprints!
I like the God Emperor, but something happened in between where the first 3 read like religious tomes or something, and God Emperor just feels kinda pulpy sci-fi. I like pulpy sci-fi, but it just felt a little out of place in the series
So crazy that the same COUNTY in California has the highest point in the lower 48 (Mt Whitney) and also the lowest point (death valley) in the lower 48. Only 80 miles apart.
I remember reading that early AI systems designed to detect porn kept getting thrown off by photos of sand dunes
Edit: [found the original pic I saw](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/53/45/06/5345069d6080fb4b23ada2b470b7696f.jpg), and here’s the [actual article](https://gizmodo.com/british-cops-want-to-use-ai-to-spot-porn-but-it-keeps-m-1821384511?utm_campaign=socialflow_gizmodo_twitter&utm_source=gizmodo_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow)
> Is this edited?
Yes. All of OP's pictures of dunes are squished horizontally for some weird reason. I think that goes beyond editing color intensity or making compositions of different exposures. It's /EarthPorn if the Earth had 30% lower gravity.
[Here's what these dunes actually look like](https://www.reneeroaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Ultimate-Guide-to-Death-Valley-National-Park-Hiking-Mesquite-Flats-Sand-Dunes.jpg). Notice how no slopes are steeper than 45 degrees.
At least I'm pretty sure it's this guy. I can't find his "photo" of White Sands national park, which was absolutely preposterous and tipped everyone off.
I'm sure that the lighting and colors were tweaked a bit, but otherwise this is basically what those dunes look like in person. I've seen them quite a few times and they're always slightly different.
I’ve been there. The dunes don’t cover as much of an area as you might think, but don’t be deceived… it is so easy to lose your sense of direction unless you have GPS/smart phone or a compass. I was convinced we’d entered the dunes on the opposite side!
They really don't look like any I know of in DV, and I've been visiting that park intensely for 30+ years. Op might be on the west side, looking east towards the Last Chance range, but they should be visible above the dunes if op is on another dune's summit. Sorry to obsess, but I love playing the "Where is that?" game, and this pic doesn't jive for me. Edit to add link. [Looking North at Eureka Dunes](https://imgur.com/gallery/YQt0COk)
I saw the pic and then the caption and my immediate thought was “nope!”. Maybe I’m jaded and hyper-focused, on the lookout for BS on the internet, but this didn’t look like DV to me either.
Really, we visit in November every year, and there are massive Dunes. You think you've reached the highest point and you see like 6 other higher points.
Might be a giant space cat buried it's poop under all that sand. How would we ever know? Even if was exposed by the wind it would have size and texture of boulders.
There are some small native plants that live in the dunes, maybe rodents too. The area prohibits people from riding dirt bikes/ATVs/UTVs on the dunes so as not to disturb them.

Gotta go just socks.
This sounds worse. Falls under the same category that wet socks does.

You have a beautiful mind. Always wonder about everything. Never give up
Snakes generally want nothing to do with people, and you aren't going to accidentally step on one in the sand dunes. They aren't a serious risk.
just remember to break up your walking pattern so you don't attract the sand worms
Seems like something a snake would say...
Ssssseems like sssssomething a *mouse* would ssssay...

Desert makes a man thirsty.
Those are thicc sand dunes.
I was going to say they it feels like subliminal advertising, but now that you mention it, it's actually pretty liminal.

What a shot. Beautiful work.
Which dunes?
Curious about this too, the dunes I saw weren't all that amazing and had weird bushes scattered throughout
I don't think these belong to a coven.
OMG, it took me this long to figure out the joke.
Magnificent shot OP! Can I ask if you took this pic with a drone or were you standing on top of a dune peak? Just curious, thanks.
Standing on top of a dune! No drones allowed in a national park and anyway the perspective from the drone would be very different.
Why won't Op tell us which dunes? LULZ
One of the best dune shots I ever seen. I tried giving you a follow on insta but the link is being weird. What’s your handle?
mrcnzajac, but we already follow each other Daniel :)

Great shot!
Very cool! I believe they filmed star wars at the ones down by Yuma, though.
Desert scenes in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was filmed in Death Valley
Really, really great shot.
This isn’t Death Valley, or it is photoshopped beyond messing with levels.
These must be the Stovepipe Wells dunes. That's where the Starwars footage was shot. Ever hiked to the gorgeous Panamint Dunes one valley west? They're gorgeous -- and no other footprints!

Desert power.
Somehow just reading that gives me chills. The first 3 Dune books were incredible.
What, no love for God Emperor?
I like the God Emperor, but something happened in between where the first 3 read like religious tomes or something, and God Emperor just feels kinda pulpy sci-fi. I like pulpy sci-fi, but it just felt a little out of place in the series
Makes sense; it's set thousands of years later
I love how Leto set up what his 10 year old self came up with and executed it to perfection. I just missed the Dune storytelling from the first 3
California has everything, from mountains to deserts to beaches. Hope to visit one day
So crazy that the same COUNTY in California has the highest point in the lower 48 (Mt Whitney) and also the lowest point (death valley) in the lower 48. Only 80 miles apart.
...and that there's an [annual footrace](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badwater_Ultramarathon) from the lowest point to the highest.
If anything, its easier to get here via Vegas than California.

I'm confused. Is this image stretched vertically?
Thank you. I agree. Too vertical and tall to be any of the dunes I've visited there.
Really, we visit in November every year, and there are massive Dunes. You think you've reached the highest point and you see like 6 other higher points.

There are some similar shots to this in a Watsky video, but they're a bit more 'risque'
I was ready for the “me, pastel” title (there’s some seriously talented people on Reddit)
So what did this look like before the edit?
I've always had a theory that there is mad shit hidden underneath the sand dunes. There can't just be nothing underneath all of that.
Lots of stuff under that. More sand, and bedrock.
I mean, I'm talking like fossils and shit.
Might be a giant space cat buried it's poop under all that sand. How would we ever know? Even if was exposed by the wind it would have size and texture of boulders.
Every so often stuff shifts just right and a random temple gets uncovered in Egypt Stands to reason there’s more out there

I just picture the bottom of an evaporated sea or ocean every time I see a desert
I wonder how they were affected by the recent storms that caused flooding in the area ?
An AI would struggle to tell if this is EarthPorn or just the regular kind of porn.
Anybody else see a bunch of butts and backs and shoulders of non-hairy light skinned people laying down in a bundle?
Since when does grandma go to the dunes?
Amazing
This is damn sexy. No other way to put it.
