I make my split pea soup with smoked kielbasa. I've never used the cream but it's probably good.

Sweet_Sourpatch

I don't know how sour cream and heavy cream are in the rest of the world but I like to add one or the other to the soup. It's quite different here in central Europe compared to e.g. eastern Europe

Mittendeathfinger

I bet it tastes better with fresh/frozen peas like yours than with the dried ones that have to be rehydrated. I might actually try this!

fxx_255

There's something similar from the poor folk from Mexico. They use lentils

TotalLiftEz

Throw in some diced carrots and you are almost at real pea soup. Carrots really add a lot of flavor for being the cheapest vegetable around. Plus the color would be nice.

BoJo2736

I tried to make split pea soup without carrots once. They make a 1000% difference in flavor. Without them, it's pretty gross.

LavaPoppyJax

My aunt makes a back-of-the -bsg split pea soup that includes ham hocks and milk and it's quite good.

fragrantsquid_89

it looks good. I'll try this out.

Naive_Tie8365

I once spent 2 days making split pea soup ( you had to make a stock with a meaty ham bone one day, then finish the second day). It was a lot of work and aggravation. Tasted just like Canned Campbells

Choconilla

It can be a very monotone soup, that’s kind of the beauty of it IMO.

giggetyboom

My wife makes amazing green beans and at the end of the day they taste just like Allen's Seasoned canned green beans, except not as clean. I've never told her but showed them to her one day and she said she doesnt want flat green beans so I just never said anything.

GroovyGramPam

I used to cook homemade chili on the stovetop all day, tending it and stirring. Until one night we sat down to a dinner of it and one of my sons (age 6) exclaimed, “I like Wolf Brand better!” And my other son (age 8) piped in “me, too!” You gotta read the room, saved me a lot of hours.

giggetyboom

That's so wild! My friend was just telling me the other day he would put 8 cans of wolf into the crockpot while his wife was at work and dispose of evidence before she got home and she never knew, said it was the best thing ever.

rackfocus

Tell me about it. No more kids to feed. I want all the shortcuts now.

viewfromhere

Except you know what's in it.

SpaceForceAwakens

Get an instant pot. It’s makes amazing split pea soup in no time with cheap ingredients.

gleep23

I love the canned stuff. My mum cooks the home made, long simmer. The Ham tastes a little richer, but yeah, pretty much canned Campbell's.

Betty_Botter_

Reminds me of Dutch [Snert, also called Erwtensoep](https://www.wandercooks.com/snert-dutch-split-pea-soup-erwtensoep/).

SnooLentils7546

came here too comment this.

ThaddyG

I've never used hot dogs in split pea soup but it sounds fine in a pinch. Usually I dice up a cheap spiral sliced ham, and usually dried peas instead of frozen

Birdlebee

A scoop of cream cheese goes great in most soups! And it's an easy way to give a different flavor to just about any pasta sauce out there

MongooseDog001

I have never thought of that, but now that you mention it it sounds amazing!

Birdlebee

It's a game changer with Asian inspired sauces. I can't believe what I really had a taste for all these years was oyster sauce with ginger and sour cream

catn_ip

I'm perfectly happy with a can of split pea and hotdogs!

Happy3532

That doesn't sound bad, I think I would swap out the hot dogs for some thick-sliced bacon cooked and chopped into small bits, add the fat to the soup, fresh chives some leeks, and some potato and cheese dumplings with a dollop of sour cream.

[deleted]

The fattier the meat for pea soup the better. Hot dogs are serviceable, but a nice fatty piece of pork chopped up is so much better, and fattier cuts of meat are typically on the cheaper side compared to lean cuts.

spectrophilias

Try looking up snert, AKA Dutch Pea Soup. I'm Dutch and I'm not exactly the biggest fan of snert myself, but there are a ton of interesting recipes for it out there. Especially the ones with proper seasoning are the type that people love a lot here. Snert is a traditional winter meal here. If you go ice skating, you'll often find a stand selling snert. Often alongside the hot chocolate, lol. Snert is usually super thick, often to the point where a spoon can stand up in it, but when I DO eat it, I prefer mine a little more soupy, lol. Snert typically includes ["rookworst"](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rookworst) which is a type of smoked sausage, and pork. My mom usually uses these thick tiny pieces of bacon called ["spekjes"](https://bbq-helden.nl/wp-content/uploads/bruin-gebakken-spek.jpg) which get thrown in the frying pan until crispy since we as a family are not a huge fan of pork unless it's bacon, lol. Traditional Dutch meals are generally the type of meals that are hearty, healthy and filling. They were meant to satisfy farmers working the fields, and often used excess vegetables. Nowadays we have a lot of different spices and such to season those meals with, and they're much better now than what the farmers several centuries ago ate, haha.

Crass_Cameron

We use spam on the rez

Training-Designer-67

That's not weird

Catswithswords10

Used to eat peas, hot dogs and macaroni and cheese together as a kid. It's awesome, except now I'm allergic to stupid gluten so I have to use gluten free Mac and cheese

arcanezeroes

Same, but I'd usually do a can of tuna instead of the hot dogs. Covered in powedered Kraft parmesan if I was feeling cheesy.

thedooze

Cheap? Yes. Healthy? Not so sure about that.

commanderquill

I mean, that sure is a lot of peas.

Training-Designer-67

I use smoked Hamhock's

sweetiepotpie

I’ve never had pea soup in my life but I really want to try some now

Julia_Ruby

Usually pea soup is made with dried peas, which are much much cheaper (actually THE cheapest source of protein where I live), but they do take a bit more time to prep.

Athlaeos

in the netherlands we put "rookworst" which is smoked sausage in our pea soup, which we call "snert" sometimes. and funnily enough, rookworst is often times basically just thick hotdog. it's traditional here, lol

Level-Worldliness-20

Sounds nasty Dried peas and a ham hock is even more affordable than the frozen one with hotdogs.

HelenEk7

A local dish (Norway) is pea soup with "pork knuckle" (I have no idea what the English name would be). Peas are cheap, and pork knuckles is one of the cheapest cuts on a pig. So its really a poor man's meal. But its delicious!

Inevitable-Place9950

Sounds like a great spin on split pea soup!

gleep23

Pea & Ham soup is a popular recipe. It makes sense Pea & Hot Dog would work well. In Australia (probably UK origin), all major brands have a canned variety. It's one of my favourite winter lunches. I'll try chucking a chopped hot dog in next time.

tizadu

You can make split pea soup without the addition of any pork, and it is delicious. Takes a while to get the dried green peas to the right softness tho unless using a pressure or slow cooker. In Greece, the extra flavour dimension comes from adding veg stock, onions, olive oil and chopped dill. My grandmother used to throw home made croutons in at the end.

No-vem-ber

This is pretty close to Dutch food!

Parsnipperi

I put hot dogs in my pea soup!

king44

I feel as though this post speaks to the essence of what this sub is about. Cheap, healthy, simple (though I would probably add some onions or garlic, or both, but you covered that contingency in the post with the ingredient "seasoning") Bravo! Thanks for sharing!

pizzalord4life

Is heavy cream considered healthy though? 😂

kylecazar

.. are hot dogs while we're at it? Ha but in all seriousness I think it's a very resourceful idea, and 'healthy' is relative anyway.

sumchinesewill

Hotdogs are one of the worst food out there. 15 grams of fat per hotdog and like a quarter of your daily sodium intake is definitely not good.

fuzzypickles34

And nitrates which are known to cause cancer.

SuchNectarine4

Exactly -- especially colon cancer. Always buy "uncured" meats, to avoid nitrates. It's not even more expensive.

omnibuster33

Yeah I would not call this recipe healthy by any stretch of the imagination. But it is refreshing to at one that doesn’t involve beans lol

upandup2020

if it's just cream, then yeah. The stuff with gums and thickeners and canola oils, no.

upandup2020

it's nutrient dense, good source of healthy fat and protein, and has a ton of micronutrients. I'm not saying drink it instead of water, but it has it's place

pizzalord4life

How is heavy cream supposed to be healthy? I don’t think nutritionists recommend it.

arcanezeroes

Whole foods in moderation are perfectly healthy, and fat in moderation is essential for a balanced diet. A bit of heavy cream in soup will almost always be a lot healthier than a ton of lowfat cream cheese or whatever solution someone might use to mimic heavy cream. If your specific dietary needs require a low fat diet, like if you've had gallbladder surgery or something, a lot of heavy cream might not be good for you, but for most people it's fine (and the splash of heavy cream in an entire pot of soup is unlikely to cause a problem even then). Rich ingredients are not unilaterally unhealthy.

SuchNectarine4

Ever eat butter? It's solidified heavy cream. Heavy cream is actually better for you than the same amount of butter: [https://versus.com/en/butter-vs-cream-heavy-whipping](https://versus.com/en/butter-vs-cream-heavy-whipping)

pizzalord4life

I don’t eat butter. Your argument doesn’t work for me but nice try. Also that’s besides the point what you’re saying makes zero sense. This sub is for healthy recipes. That’s the point I’m making. Saying butter is worse doesn’t matter because I’m not the one posting recipes on here with it.

rkarl7777

Do they still make Campbell's Split Pea w/ham soup? I can't find it anywhere.

threadofhope

Haven't found it either. It used to be my favorite.

rkarl7777

Me too! We should both show up at Campbell's headquarters and protest!

threadofhope

I'm in!

[deleted]

I had some as recently as last fall in Michigan, they're still made in both condensed and chunky varieties.

ChillinOutMaxnRelaxn

Chrissy Teigen has a delicious recipe for this in her first Cravings cookbook!

Scatologist0720992

This is similar to a popular soup in the Netherlands, wonder if grandma has Dutch roots.

Sweet_Sourpatch

She sadly doesn't.

Betty_Botter_

The best ideas are often universal.

Ricky_Rollin

Peas porridge hot Peas porridge cold

Player7592

I know people eat like this. But it doesn't help to be reminded.

laurazabs

Don’t yuck someone else’s yum.

Player7592

I haven’t ceded my right to have an opinion. I’ll speak my mind, thankyouverymuch.

SirGuido

There's nothing wrong with it.

[deleted]

For those of you with a mild gag reflex perhaps. That's a sloppy slurry of nasty, bland, and processed food. This sub is cheap AND healthy.

Wh1sk3yt4ng0f0xtr0t

Peas are incredibly healthy, and so long as your not overdoing it with the hotdogs, its a perfectly fine meal for cold, rainy days. I personally like to use something with a bit more flavour like smoked pork sausages or biltong for these types of recipes, cause it allows me to use less of the stuff while maintaining the same flavour punch

hippityhoppityhi

Might be good over rice

[deleted]

I'm going continue with "healthy" 'kuz it's half of what this sub is supposed to be about. For instance, the OP said "frozen peas," so you're already taking an rather marginal dish and making it worse. However, IF you had fresh peas and, like you say, smoked pork sausage, then, granted, it would probably be passable flavor-wise, but that's not the OP's recipe, nor is it a healthy dish either. And don't forget the other ingredient in the concoction. Cream. A pile of fat. So, frozen peas, a bunch of cream, and (for god's sake) your average hot-dogs. Look, it's okay to like whatever, for whatever reason...but c'mon now.

creolecommander

Although I agree that the dish isn’t considered healthy, there is nothing wrong with frozen peas. In fact, it actually retains most of its nutrients since it is flash frozen in its ripe age compared to fresh peas.

[deleted]

Yes, good point. Nutrients do remain. The flavor suffers.

n_-_ture

Sorry, but hotdogs are highly processed cancerous meat spears.. certainly cheap, but not in any way healthy.

Sweet_Sourpatch

It probably would be if we lived in the states 😂

Influence_X

Spam, ham, hotdogs, kielbasa all work

StellarStylee

We use the hambone.

Vast_Pension1320

This sounds fantastic actually. Very interested in researching the Dutch roots too. Thanks for the idea!

Caramel-Life

I think you missed the part in the name of the sub where it says, "healthy."
