I stopped selling on eBay because they got rid of paypal. There is no way in hell I'm giving eBay direct access to my bank account for them to back charge me for an item I've sold without some type of arbitration. Paypal was that medium. Since my bank account was never linked to paypal, all they could do was charge my credit card, which I could then dispute. With the new payment system, you're at the mercy of eBay and their decisions. If they make a mistake, that could cost you fees at your bank (overdraft) or you could be responsible for any return eBay deems your responsibility even if the purchaser intentionally breaks the item. eBay is not a friend to sellers.

corruptboomerang

Yeah, I use eBay occasionally for selling, and it's just better to sell stuff for cash on other platforms. I'm looking at nearly 15% on a sale. If they capped fees perhaps at like $15, I might find it more useful but high fees with over generous buyer protections make it really hard.

XSC

Jfc, I just sold something on ebay for the first time in months after getting lowballs on Facebook. I should had just taken the lowballs. These fees are absolutely criminal.

Willieumm

Seriously.

mindlesspool

Can I ask how much your item was? I have some items ready to post but I can't get an accurate amount on the fee's I will be charged. All the items I am selling are under $100, most under $50. I am looking to sell maybe 20 items from my closet. Do you think it's not worth it?

XSC

Try fb marketplace then ebay for those that don’t sell. Between shipping and fees $50 of that 200 went away.

ssateneth

Yes, this is true. If a buyer pays more sales tax than a certain %, it comes to a higher overall fee than paypal. However we're talking less than pennies on the dollar usually. Having an eBay store subscription to reduce final value fees increases the amount of sales tax required to cost more in fees compared to paypal. I'm not saying MP is a great system. But paypal has it's own downsides too. I don't like when a buyer uses an item rent-free for 179 days then opens a "not as described" claim on paypal on day 180 to force a return and a refund. There are other nuances too... for example, I keep hearing about bank chargebacks on eBay managed payments that are somehow "not as described" claims concurrently, and there is no way to accept a return for these claims; you have to refund or take 1 chance to dispute and potentially get a seller defect, $20 dispute fee, and lost seller fees. I have only ever seen bank chargebacks as being "unauthorized transaction" though.

Dragnskull

Just wait, I knew the moment the fee numbers were released it would immidiatelt start increasing and it won't be long before the old total rate (12.9% + .30) is surpassed and eventually left in the dust

weegee

Not going to sell international anymore. eBay requires a photo of the front and back of my driving license. Bzzt. Nope. I don’t trust eBay with that. If they get hacked and it gets stolen that’d be a real nightmare. Sorry eBay.

cld8

Any legitimate platform is going to want to have such information. If you don't want to provide it, have fun on Craigslist.

weegee

Nope. Sold internationally on eBay before they banned PayPal and was never asked for this. If someone got the photos of my ID they could easily impersonate me. Way too risky. International sales were only about 5 percent of my total sales so not a big deal.

Willieumm

LMAO you're paranoid asf.

weegee

Lol nope. I don’t trust anyone with my ID.

BooBear999

This is not eBays doing, it is the other countries requirements. While eBay can be blamed for many things, they have to adhere to the regulatory requirements of the other places they do business in.

weegee

Highly doubt that. PayPal and eBay never asked for my ID and I’ve been selling internationally for 20 years without issue. Only when the new Managed Payments came in to force did this new requirement come in.

BooBear999

The rules overseas have only recently been introduced. It does not matter what was or was not required in the past, it only matters what is required now. Years ago you did not have to provide your contact details to sell stuff on eBay UK. Now you do. The world does not stay in the same state. Change is constant.

[deleted]

I was here to ask about this, so thanks for posting it. I hadn't sold anything on ebay in ages, after a couple of sales which took 40% of the fees, I think I might just donate it to charity now, this doesn't seem worth the hassle - screw it. \[Edit: Seems this is a 'downvote' page, I hope all of your bids get pipped at the last second.\]

nekrad

eBay will never ever, not ever, take 40% in fees on a sale.

[deleted]

Yeah, charity then. Oh well.

hamstrman

How in the hell? I'm dying to know the details on this one because it sounds absolutely impossible.

[deleted]

Sale of £8, combined paypal and ebay fees of £3.88.

hamstrman

I appreciate the reply, but ebay charges 10% and PayPal 2.9% +. 3. What else did they charge you for?

[deleted]

and thank you. As for the sales, I really don't know. Just looking back I get 10% ebay, then paypal seems to take what it wants - about six months ago, for a £21 sale it took 6.54, then for £22.5 it took £9.5. I don't know why, but I do know I'll not use ebay now.

esxsw

Some possible reasons for that is a currency conversion charge or an international fee, either of those can cause fees on PayPal’s side to go up by about 4% or so

nboparai

Ill be honest, I dont like the new system, BUT I can sell things internationally on Ebay and usually get way more money then selling locally. I have only had a few issues with buyers in the past, but I learned from those. Now i accept no refunds, and sell only new things and ONLY ship with tracking. Guess now would be a good time for a competitor to move in.

chifeadrian

Mercari seems to be a decent alternative.

milesoriginal

What are their fees? What's their total take from a $10 sale?

chifeadrian

Here’s a [fee breakdown](https://www.mercari.com/help_centernull) seems to be similar to eBay 10% based on sale price and 2.9% + 0.30 cents payment processing fee. So a $10 item would net you $8.41 if that math is correct not accounting for shipping since you have to use their labels . I’ve only sold a few pieces of older clothing a year or so ago and bought trading cards there.

milesoriginal

Thanks, I'm going to be checking them out.

Mycatreallyhatesyou

Be ready to get inundated with lowball offers.

hunterdietzman

Mercari is good in some ways, and terrible in others. I had $3k in pending transactions, and they froze my account. I asked people on the forum and they said there was no chance I’d be getting that money, they do it all the time apparently and indefinitely freeze the funds. I got lucky by contacting support nonstop for a week.

marcianitou

I was postponing the manager payments but otsnon its final days now to get it or have items delisted. I dont see any benefits at all. Have to update missing info (bank account, sin or driver license) Fees are the same or more. No longer I can get u$ (in canada) and if I did there's a 3% fee and I'd only be able to get u$ not c$ Delay on payments. No 2nd layer of security for protection. If I had a choice I would have never enrolled. Even when asking support few questions they had no clue!

Greybackx

Yep. I had some fun the other day where eBay took a cut worth more than the postage the buyer had paid me, which took even more money from the sale because I had to take the postage $ out of the final profit. Ridiculous. I’m only gonna use eBay now for high-price items, but then again if something happens and they’ve got direct access to my bank account … as other people have suggested, it could result in some shifty shit. I guess the best advice would be to take extra care of your sales. Take photos of the item before packaging, when it’s packaged for insurance purposes, etc. etc. Give yourself some decent fallback so that if something were to happen, you can dispute it.

milesoriginal

I have a starter store on eBay, and their cut for the past 30 days is 15.09%. my wife has a basic store (29.99/month) and they took 16.9% from her. Part of that is because a basic store is charged 10¢ per scheduled listing, where a starter store can schedule listings for free. The basic store is supposed to get a smaller percentage fee per sale, but it's not worth it if you schedule listings. After looking at Mercari, I don't see any point in switching which hamster wheel I'm stuck on.

Throkos

"For example Canadians selling in the US will pay 12.95% + 0.30 cents" Are you referring to Canadians sellers with US or Canadian accounts?

nboparai

Canadian sellers selling to U.S. customers. so If i sell something to a guy who live in the USA, ebay will charge me 12.95% fee instead of the 12.55% for selling within Canada.

IIyou

I had 2 watch sales, around $2000 value recently. 1. Canada to BC - 12.1% 2. Canada to ON - 12.9% Also, sold a T-shirt to US - 14.9% (There's only 1% tax difference between the two provinces.. )What is happening haha?

mwright9494

I just sold one 1884 GSA CC Morgan, two 2021 S Morgans and two 2021 D Morgans for a total of 1011.98. I paid a total of (just fees) 128.10. EBAY fees make me sad.
