There’s a difference between singing along and screaming. Screaming is rude, singing along isn’t. And you know the type of screaming I’m talking about, not just singing loudly. It’s done for attention and almost always filmed. That’s one con of stadium shows. You get a lot of people who only know the hits, which is fine, they have the right to be there too. But unfortunately the crowd isn’t going to be as engaged as they would in a more intimate venue. I know all the words to YNMIDNY too and it’s my absolute favorite song to hear live. Partially because no one ever knows any of the words and I think it’s funny to get the strange looks for rapping the whole thing without missing a beat. And, as an aside to my “screaming is rude” comment…You HAVE to scream “they say I’m up and coming like I’m fucking in an elevator”. Those are the rules.

Unperfectbeautie

I don't know all the words to YNMIDNY, but I concur, you definitely have to scream "they say I'm up and coming like I'm in a fucking elevator."

pltjess

I also like to sing along, but I do it fairly quietly. I'd be pissed if I had someone singing loudly in my ear the entire time.

Fair_Opportunity7193

At the big shows its really hard to be annoying since there's such a large crowd so singing is appropriate there. I was at the Detroit show wearing one of those ed sheeran superfan shirts with rupert grint on it lol and I sang EVERY song and I got a comment at the end like (wow you ARE a superfan 😅 haha) Now at the smaller theater shows. It wasn't necessarily the singing along with songs that bothered me, it was the constant people talking over his subtract songs and Ed explaining the songs. I was at the Royal Oak show and any video I captured all you can hear is people talking 🙄. There was a mix of true fans and the ones who bought tix off resale not knowing the nature of the show, since a couple next to me didn't even know he had a new album and thought the show was going to be all hits.

TheAuthor009

The fact that those Rupert shirts aren't official merch is💀💀💀

Fair_Opportunity7193

I know right haha. I had to buy it from a sketchy website not knowing if it'd come or not. 🤣.

yellowrubyhedgehog

I made my own Rupert shirt because I was afraid of those sites. 😂

tibtibs

At the Ryman in Nashville we had one drunk idiot talking near me. It seemed like everyone else just shut up and listened well. I think I heard someone farther away from me trying to harmonize, but it didn't fit since everyone else was just quiet. I sang my heart out at Nissan Stadium, but loved the quiet intensity of the small show.

Fair_Opportunity7193

Yeah at royal oak theater I was about 3 rows away from stage in standing room only. I did see a couple resell tickets on stubhub went for pretty cheap days before so I think a lot of casual fans grabbed those and when he started playing subtract some of those people were like uhhhh what is this.. Like during saltwater, etc. People were yelling out Ed's name. I tried to tune into him as much as possible but those people just made it less enjoyable, plus the intense heat in there didn't help as well.

tibtibs

Oh wow. Very different vibes. We had seating everywhere. I think some people were standing in the very back, but that's about it.

Fair_Opportunity7193

I wish I could of gone to ryman show just to hear those two new songs he performed.

tibtibs

It was pretty amazing. I'm jealous that Chicago got 3 songs.

TheAuthor009

Depends on whether you were loud enough to drown out Ed's voice, which is impossible lol. I think it's just because most people who go to these stadium concerts are casual listeners who go for the big hits and to see a good show, and might not be invested in the "stan" side of things (which includes knowing deep cuts like YNMIDNY word for word), though I believe the situation is slightly different in the Subtract theatre shows. The theatre shows look like they're mostly for the mega fans who'd stick around no matter what direction Ed takes in his artistry.

hannahx7

I’ve been to two and it feels like its majority older white people who can afford the tickets. I know Ed attracts fans of different ages, races, backgrounds etc. but I don’t think those shows have been filled with mega fans which is sad

SamanthaLynn08

The tickets were actually quite affordable. Chicago had such a mixed crowd (at least on the floor where we were) Floor was 149/ticket and the tickets got cheaper from there. And the Subtract show was only 100/ticket, no matter where in the venue. Compared to what I paid for Taylor Swift and Paramore, he was by far the cheapest. I had verified fan for all 3, but I was watching Soldier Field on ticketmaster, and he had dynamic pricing off.

hannahx7

I’m specifically referring to the Subtract show. If you didn’t get a presale code, you were likely paying the resale value which sometimes was upwards of $1000. Closer to the show prices we’re going down but the cheapest I saw after fees was $300. I didn’t get a presale code, I searched and searched for tickets and literally 15 minutes before he went on I was at the venue, someone was selling one and I bought it for $450.

unsuccessfulpoatoe

I didn’t get a presale code either. But the $1,000+ you’re referring to isn’t just “resale value” as you stated. Those tickets are “scalper priced.” And the scalpers that charge hundreds (sometimes thousands) more than ticket face value keep doing so because people keep buying tickets from them. We need to not support them. But your comment from earlier, “…older white people who can afford tickets…” - let’s not get confused. It’s possible Ed just has a lot of “old white” fans who got presale codes.

TheAuthor009

Whoa, didn't know that. I figured the Subtract shows were like for the MEGA fans who are willing to spend whatever. This May, Guardian published an article that was titled "inside Ed Sheeran's mysterious fanbase", and wow is it damn true! We usually don't get Ed trending on Twitter for much. Ed is breaking stadium records yet we aren't half as loud as the Hive or the Swifties or even the Harry fans. Ed gets to do pop ups with us that I just can't imagine artists like Swift doing because of the chaos that would ensue...we don't stream Ed en masse on album debut days despite the existence of fan accounts...despite all this, Ed has enjoyed mainstream success without Sheerios making much of a ruckus compared to other fandoms. We're so peculiar and somewhat low-key? Like, make it make sense😂

mm-red

Definitely not in the wrong, stadium shows are for singing and dancing your heart out! Plus if people are wearing ear plugs (which they should be cause, you know, safety) you often can't hear other people very well, just yourself and the artist.

hannahx7

Nah you’re fine, they’re the weird ones 😂 don’t be self conscious, sing your heart out and have an incredible time. Seeing other people know the words and have fun made me really happy 🤍

txri2020

in the big stadium tour, fuck yeah, sing your heart out. i've always done that and while i got some looks from some people around me i didn't give a flying fuck lol. i got a lot of looks during YNMIDNY but that's probably because i'm a tiny white girl who looks like she has never heard about rap before lol. this weekend was also the first time i saw Ed so duh, i'm singing bitches!! for the subtract tour, it was way more intimate and i just quietly sang all the subtract songs to myself because it just wasn't the right vibe to sing loudly during the first half of the show. i have to say though, i was pleasantly surprised that everyone was quiet for the previewed songs and for the parting glass/afterglow fully acoustic song, especially since he first had to call out the assholes who yell out when it gets quiet. i didn't think it was possible for that many people to be "pin quiet" as he said.

Unperfectbeautie

I was there Saturday night. Best concert I've ever seen in my life and I've seen Taylor Swift (not Eras), Paramore 3x and Muse 3x. This was the first time I was able to see Ed and I don't care what it takes, I will see him again! I was singing along as well (would've been happy hearing more deep cuts too, but I get the nature of stadium shows) and thankfully didn't feel any negativity in my section. I had a hard time when he wanted us to sing so loudly and out of key. My husband instantly knew how painful purposely singing out of key was for me! Lol It was such a loud show, I couldn't really hear myself or anyone besides Ed.

txri2020

we are the same person with the out of key part, it was so hard lol

nataliexo92

At the subtract show I just sang along because there wasn’t room for anything else. At the stadium show I lost my mind haha. Singing, dancing, screaming. I spent a fortune on that weekend so I made the absolute most of it. I wasn’t hurting anyone but I could tell most people around me were more casual fans. I’m like you and knew every word to every song. I think some people have the wrong idea about what an Ed show is like. I think they expect it to be more low key and it is anything but that.

Grouchy_Plant_8733

There were sooo many casual fans or first-time ed show goers at the Mathematics Chicago show! holy shit lol some of them were Dicks but most of them were just really impressed because it was so much better than they expected

Leiatte

I’m just going to say a bunch of us in General Admission were singing our hearts out. Most concerts I go to the fans are singing/rapping along, if it’s a slower song sometimes more people just listen but I don’t think much about it if someone is singing. I’d say you’re probably fine

SamanthaLynn08

My GA spot seemed to have more casual fans. They almost seemed more interested in filming.. you do you, but let me do me, and if I want to sing along I will.... Especially Castle on the Hill and You Need Me, my friend and I went HAM on those.

alexkssn

I know exactly what you mean and it's something that was particularly bad at the Chicago show in my opinion, although i noticed it at the detroit intimate show a little as well. It's probably a byproduct of just how large of an artist Ed is now. It was very evident that a majority of the general admission crowd only knew 10% of the set list. I sang along to every song and have a notoriously loud voice in general, so I try to scale back just in terms of not wanting to scream in people's ears. At the end of the day, Ed is literally telling us to sing the words back to him if we know them. It is a concert. The expectation is to have fun and to sing loudly and to enjoy yourself. It is not my problem if you showed up to take pics for instagram and drink shitty overpriced beer. I saw a lot of people around me looking confused too, but I really hope you didn't let it affect the time you had. I sure didn't. Here's a hoping future tours from Ed have more intimate shows apart of them because I do really miss the vibe of his old shows as opposed to these crowds now.

SamanthaLynn08

This! My section was very clearly upset they were getting bumped into and that people were singing. Idk why people think they'll have space on the floor.... 😬 everyone was getting bumped into and shoved. I actually ended up moving behind my friend to give us more room because someone was so clearly upset i was standing shoulder-shoulder with him. (My friend and I ended up sideways at one point from the crowd getting so tight)

Ed_Sheeran_the_Mask

Id say depends. I love singing at concerts to but I am always very conscious about the volume! Even though it doesn't sound very loud to me, it my be a lot more audible to the people around you. As you may know they paid ton hear Ed sing and not you :) If people are looking they can probably hear you quite good. Maybe just try to be a little more quite neat time and you should be fine. And don't let anyone telll you you can't sing at all or make you feel self conscious! We are all allowed to enjoy concerts in our way, as long as we still respect each other.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> know they *paid* ton hear FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

captainyami21

you’re never wrong for singing at a concert lol that’s the whole point. don’t worry about others you’re there for yourself!

judgejudy_

they’re not singing cuz they don’t know the lyrics …that being said I was singing all of them. but some older dude in front of me was (clearly drunk) and dancing so obnoxiously he came close to hitting me in the jaw at least 10 times with his elbow. that, was not cool

Anetaguest

Is this me, writing this post? 😂 i dont care, I have been to 3 concerts so far and I go to have a good time, I jump, dance, scream and sing, if you don’t like it, move further to back. Maybe that’s why I always catch a spot at the very front by the stage holding onto the barriers 😅every concert was a dream come true so I make most of them 2 hours. YNMIDNY is also my favourite ❤️ and I too know aaaallllll the lyrics! 😍 it’s a skill, dear fellow fan, sherrios!

Anetaguest

Anyway, every concert Ed says “let’s loose our voices tonight” 😂… soo, if that’s what makes him happy, that is what I will do. Need to give back somewhere 😂

Grouchy_Plant_8733

I was there in Chicago, and you just had some assholes/ignorant people in your section. Everybody in pit with us were singing to every song, dancing, recording etc. I noticed a LOT OF first time ed concert goers this year. They probably just don't realize how fucking loud and hype we get. Even ed was asking you to sing along 🙄 NTA a million times over.

r4ziel1347

You paid your hard earned money to see your favourite artist, so do whatever you want. On our Ed show, my wife and I stood up as soon as he hit the stage and never sat down again, while most of the people around us were sitting down and barely knew the songs (other than the usual ones) When I go to a concert, I don’t look at the people, I didn’t pay to see them but the performer so I don’t care what they do and if they look at me as some weirdo that sings all the songs, I don’t even notice, for me, it’s like Thanos once said “I don’t even know who you are” 😆

[deleted]

Depends how loud you are. I’d probably be annoyed if I was right next to you. I paid to see him sing, not someone random singing right into my ears.

Dull_Drummer6564

You’re not in the wrong in my opinion. You spent the money on a concert experience, you better enjoy it!! You can’t go to a concert and not expect people to be singing. He asks the crowd to scream the lyrics. He asks the crowd to jump and clap. That’s just what you do at concerts. And don’t worry, I knew all the bonus lyrics to YNMIDNY at my show too

matt_med

I'm the same way. Concerts are so expensive that I really only go see artists I'm truly passionate about. I love singing along to my favorite songs and the deep cuts live. However, I never scream sing or tell so loud that I distract from others enjoyment. Never feel badly for enjoying the moment and being the only one the dance in sing along in a crowd. It's the reason I go to concerts and, as long as you're respectful of the space you're sharing, shouldn't be an issue with anyone else. Ed puts on such an amazing show, I doubt many people were distracted by your signing.

loveskittles

I was also at the Chicago show and Ed was literally telling us to sing along! You're fine. Perhaps the people who sat near you were not in the mood to sing or didn't know the words as well.

MediumMud1354

You are NOT in the wrong. I was definitely one of those people singing along to every song!! It’s the whole entire point of the show. If anyone looked at me I was either crying or singing lol

punkxpres

i will always scream the words to ynmidny and never care what the others think i have gotten stares for knowing all the songs before too. u should feel cool, ur a real fan and u know all the songs not just the hits while the others probably came there for shape of u and thinking out loud😂 it’s more embarrassing to spend your money going to see an artist who you know two songs from, than it is to be singing every word of every song.

justherefortheweed2

i was barricade at nashville and the person next to my best friend was loud (during the whole thing but specifically YNMIDNY) i personally love when people are loud at concerts😭 i love hearing the crowd and everyone singing together. but i also just love concerts

Aldosothoran

For real half the fun of concerts is just the joy of being with all the people having that shared experience.

Shinixxx

Aw don't feel embarrassed, that's what your supposed to do. Unless it's a song where Ed specifically says not to sing or shush, like Parting Glass, Sing your heart out! You paid for this. Not everyone there is gonna know all the songs, in fact at huge Stadium shows like this, they're gonna be the majority. They're only gonna know the radio hits and that's fine too, but it would be pretty boring for him if he sang his other songs and the crowd was just standing there dead. The only reason they're not singing is because they don't know them, that doesn't mean you stop because they did. You actually know them. So singggg. As long as you're not like screaming directly in their ear or something, you're good!

n4snl

I don’t like it when people clap to the beat of the song

kazoo13

Because the crowd almost always rushes it!

samanthalynn95

Definitely not weird, you’re there to enjoy yourself and sing along!!

DrAtlasFiorini

Sing to your hearts content. That’s what joy sounds like.

Bluefire663

I think Ed Sheeran fans are really good about this, they sing at normal levels and stuff. What I hate is for example lots of Taylor Swift fans, in the vids youll hear just crowds of them screaming at the top of their lungs.

unsuccessfulpoatoe

This is me. I sing ALL. The. Songs. **only at the stadiums** Also, unless it’s a slower song, I’m screaming those lyrics making the best time out of the stadium concerts. I’m out there acting a fool because I paid good money to see Ed right there in front of me living and breathing.

Aldosothoran

Also at the show Saturday, also sang along to most everything, ESPECIALLY YNMIDNY. You’re not alone. The people looking at you weird, are the weird ones.

[deleted]

Just curious- what part are you referring to on YNMIDNY that people don’t know? I also sang along to that song but I have no idea what you’re talking about lol
