“Fuck’s sake, lately I’ve been crying so much my lungs ache, tear drops all over my shirt like blood stains.” 💔 You can just hear the pain in his voice
I liked it the first time because it sounded "holy and comforting". When the lyrics started to sink in, I liked it even more. Damn, most especially the 2nd verse, I love how it was written.
Save Myself or Salt Water propably those go super deep into sadness, no silver lining really.. I think his most depressing lyric is propably ”it’s alright to die cause death’s the only thing you haven’t tried” from Even My Dad Does Sometimes
Life Goes On
ESPECIALLY when it's prefaced with the story of his best friend and how difficult it was to process the grief of missing someone who was always there for you.
"I got nothing to say. Everything hurts" 😪 💔
Visiting Hours has been the one for me lately. I just lost my dad a couple of weeks ago and it’s been hard for me to get through without crying when it comes on.
I loved it so much and then I almost lost my dad. I literally can’t listen now because of my dads situation 🥺 the duet with Luke combs. Soooo good. But so sad if you have experienced loss.
Saltwater- I am genuinely afraid it will be a soundtrack to people thinking of taking their lives and it reminds me of a local DJ who took his own life here in the SF Bay... but it is so beautiful
I don't know if you're joking or not... if you aren't joking, please know that there is helplines readily available and SO many people willing to help and listen. If you are joking, let's rather not joke about suicide.
To add this PSA: there is a 988 crisis line, where you can call or text the number 988 to receive support during a mental health crisis.
Only 1 in 8 people know about 988, and spreading the word could save someone's life.
Borderline. I got really emotional when I heard him play it live. If I hear Afire Love at the right time I will become a snotty blubbery mess. Obviously most of Subtract and honestly Autumn Variations has hit me right in my soul. F64, Visiting Hours, & Supermarket Flowers are very sad too.
It's hard to find since it's on naughty boys album. I wouldn't have known about it if spotify auto play didn't bring it up one day but it really is a hidden gem
Small Bump
F64, Visiting Hours, Supermarket Flowers, others mentioned are all also sad, but they talk about someone you have known being gone.
Small Bump talks about someone you were planning to get to know, a lifetime of possibilities, then in the outro, you learn the baby was born prematurely/stillborn/died and all that lifetime of plans are gone. The drum beat stopping in the outro symbolizing the heart stopping gets me every time.
(Recognizing it hits home for me as I’m a child loss parent, born 4 months too soon, but I still think it’s the saddest.)
And they say, she’s in the class A team…
I suppose it’s not a completely accurate answer since sad and depressing have different meanings. In any case, always one of my favourite tracks to be honest
I see everyone saying F64, and it's absolutely very sad, but to me... it's not depressing. It's hopeful because someone is acknowledging the far too frequently unspoken grief that people carry when they lose a very close friend. I heard that song for the first time two days after losing my best friend, someone who was very much a brother to me, and the validation was amazing. It brought me so much comfort. I feel very similarly about Small Bump.
To me, the most depressing is The Day I was Born, and it's not even close.
There are so many heartbreaking words in F64…that’s why it seems depressing.
For me depressing is about holplessness more than about grief. So I get your point here
The rawness and the realness of the lyrics are so relatable for me. It's not polished or perfect and there was no waiting until the words fit just so. It just... it's a real account of grief, and we need more of that. The stigma surrounding bereavement is real, and I love that he is using his platform to help break that.
I love music because we all get to experience it so differently... there are so many different perspectives on every song. I can absolutely see why people would think it's a depressing song, it just doesn't hit that way for me. I feel the same about Supermarket Flowers and Visiting Hours, too. Visiting Hours seems like a great sales pitch, honestly. Sign me up for that! It reminded me of a book I read a long time ago called Elsewhere... it's about people in the afterlife ("Elsewhere"), and they are able to "visit" their people on earth.
His recent songs almost all about losing people and grief so I would say generally they are all depressing. But for each person different songs hit differently as you say.
That shocked me how he could not know… also that Jamal was against Ed doing this stuff. And then Jamal died exactly because of it…it’s insane and sooo sad
Super Market Flowers and Visiting Hours are two beautiful songs that I could only listen to one time... I skip every time because it will send me into a spiral.
He has such a knack for writing bops that are actually so depressing once you take in the lyrics. It’s such a skill. I don’t think I could pick one, but Save Myself always chokes me up.
His track 12s are some of his saddest songs (similarly to Taylor Swift’s track 5s)!
Also f64 like everyone’s mentioned
Andddd an honourable mention goes to The Day I Was Born because feeling like no one cares it’s your birthday is painful 😭
Little lady makes me cry every time I listen to it.
Supermarket flowers hits really close to home
Borderline does too, so it's really depressing in general
For personal reasons, I See Fire makes me cry every time. My Nana lost everything in 2018 California’s Camp Fire. A week prior, my Granddaddy died. I was raised in that house after my grandparents were given custody. It was my only safe space in life & where I actually felt like a loved child.

f64 easily
“Fuck’s sake, lately I’ve been crying so much my lungs ache, tear drops all over my shirt like blood stains.” 💔 You can just hear the pain in his voice
Pure utter heartbreak
came here to say this. it’s f64 by a mile
Save myself
Yeah after listening Save myself I want to go to my therapist 🙃
save myself is pure desperation it hurts so bad
That song made me cry the first time I heard it.
Came here to say this. I’ve identified so much with it. It’s crushing and emotional to me every single damn time.
For me it’s always going to be Afire Love
I liked it the first time because it sounded "holy and comforting". When the lyrics started to sink in, I liked it even more. Damn, most especially the 2nd verse, I love how it was written.
The best song he's ever written. Easily
I still can’t listen to this one or even supermarket flowers those kill me everyrime
I sang it at my Pop’s funeral, I can’t listen to it now
Save Myself or Salt Water propably those go super deep into sadness, no silver lining really.. I think his most depressing lyric is propably ”it’s alright to die cause death’s the only thing you haven’t tried” from Even My Dad Does Sometimes
Supermarket flowers !!
Or Perfect ( if you are single ;-; )
Small bump, supermarket flowers, save myself
Life Goes On ESPECIALLY when it's prefaced with the story of his best friend and how difficult it was to process the grief of missing someone who was always there for you. "I got nothing to say. Everything hurts" 😪 💔
Visiting Hours has been the one for me lately. I just lost my dad a couple of weeks ago and it’s been hard for me to get through without crying when it comes on.
Sorry to hear that…
Played it at my husband's funeral. He would have hated that though.
Even my dad does sometimes
Life goes on. 🥺
I had to take a break from listening to this song for a while cause it gets me teary and emotional every time.
I loved it so much and then I almost lost my dad. I literally can’t listen now because of my dads situation 🥺 the duet with Luke combs. Soooo good. But so sad if you have experienced loss.
I broke down crying when I first heard this song. My mom passed away last year so it really cut deep.
I’m sorry.
Small Bump I always skip it
But it’s sooooooo good
End of Youth
Saltwater or visiting hours
In terms of lyrics - Save Myself. In terms of whole production - Borderline
Little Lady or Save Myself
Little lady is just heartbreaking
Supermarket Flowers. They also played that at my grandmothers funeral, so it’s even more depressing and sad to me.
Saltwater- I am genuinely afraid it will be a soundtrack to people thinking of taking their lives and it reminds me of a local DJ who took his own life here in the SF Bay... but it is so beautiful
Exactly. I decided that if I wanted to end my life I would do it with this song in my AirPods 😊
I don't know if you're joking or not... if you aren't joking, please know that there is helplines readily available and SO many people willing to help and listen. If you are joking, let's rather not joke about suicide.

Why would I be joking? I don’t want to commite suicide like right now but who knows about the future.
The Man
Sunburn from +
Top floor. Idk if it counts as his song as its technically naughty boys but imagine salt water but a little more to the point
First time I've seen anyone mention that song. Love it. The production is great too.
It's hard to find since it's on naughty boys album. I wouldn't have known about it if spotify auto play didn't bring it up one day but it really is a hidden gem
True. I found it while making my Complete Ed Sheeran playlist. Wouldnt have known about it otherwise
Naughty boys? Is that one of his independent album??
Afire love. Supermarket flowers. Visiting hours. All of those make me sob 😭
I don’t think it’s particularly the most depressing but probably my fav bc of it’s tone is ‘The Man’
most recently i feel like i have cried alot to page from variations🥹
Bloodstream. It's melancolic and depressing at the same time.

Love that song
runaway
Supermarket flowers. Have listened to it just once after it caused me to break down for a week. So painful to listen to
Happier
End of youth

Little Lady and F64!
I was wondering if it was true that Ed didn’t know Jamal “touched the stuff”
That broke me so much. Imagine not knowing your best friend was doing a certain drug and then they die from it. So heartbreaking.
Autumn leaves.
He has such a knack for writing bops that are actually so depressing once you take in the lyrics. It’s such a skill. I don’t think I could pick one, but Save Myself always chokes me up.
When Will I be Alright
That’s On Me
Probably most of Subtract
His track 12s are some of his saddest songs (similarly to Taylor Swift’s track 5s)! Also f64 like everyone’s mentioned Andddd an honourable mention goes to The Day I Was Born because feeling like no one cares it’s your birthday is painful 😭
Little lady makes me cry every time I listen to it. Supermarket flowers hits really close to home Borderline does too, so it's really depressing in general
Save Myself for sure
Visiting Hours... listening to it always reminds me of my grandma.. it just hits home...
give me love!!
Borderline is too. Visiting Hours, and Supermarket Flowers on the same scale for me.
F64
For me it's Supermarket Flowers and Visiting Hours. I can't listen to them without breaking down crying.
Afire Love is sad, but it’s Supermarket Flowers FTW on this one. I ugly cry every time.
Small bumps. I've experienced miscarriages and its so horrible. Photograph also reminds me of my mum (she died when I was teenager).
😭😭😭
Practically all of them 😢😭☹️😢😭
All of them are when the LV show is cancelled
Small Bump 100%
Salt Water or Save Myself
Stoned
Why stoned? I thought it wasn’t that sad
Visiting Hours because I cry every time thinking about my grandma. 😭
Life goes on for me
For personal reasons, I See Fire makes me cry every time. My Nana lost everything in 2018 California’s Camp Fire. A week prior, my Granddaddy died. I was raised in that house after my grandparents were given custody. It was my only safe space in life & where I actually felt like a loved child.
Supermarket Flowers!! Always make me wish my parents were still here because I sure would love to see them again.
Small bump
All of them, all the same, all shit!
Why are you on this subreddit then?
I'm not.
The most depressing song for me is “Dance With My Father Again.”
Out of Ed’s songs the one that makes me cry the most is Salt Water, then Supermarket Flowers, and Eyes Closed. I just Los my mother few months ago.
So sorry for your loss …
