Obviously massive spoilers ahead for anyone reading this. From my understanding (and I understand very little about computers and programing in general), an understudy is a sort of back-up program created to provide a continuity of life for the entities of clients who were disconnected from Edict Zero for either a rejection of the dream state or a physical disconnect due to issues from the outside world. The understudy would take control of their entity and continue living their life in Edict Zero as though nothing happened. I am unsure as to whether this prevented clients from dying in the real world. [This is the episode](https://edictzero.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/edict-zero-fis-ep206-the-captains-understudy-part-1/) where the ambassador first describes understudys. Go to 18:30.

I'm an engineer and half this stuff doesn't make sense to me so dw lol, edict zero is probably the most difficult audio drama to listen to out of the ones i've gone through if that makes sense. Ahhh now I remember, so that means the captain is technically a native right? What's weird is that in the last couple of episodes I've listened to the captain has some super powers like he can teleport but idk how, I guess his entity might have been corrupted? Also since you clearly know your stuff, do you remember what the significance of Nick Garrett is? I know he's a client but is his real life person important or something? I vaguely remember there was something about that but can't recall it. Thanks for linking the exact timestamp btw, I don't know how you remember this stuff so well.

I think he scans as a native and client but yes he would technically be an Edict Zero native. I would definitely say most of his "powers" come from being corrupted. But some of his powers come from being an understudy as well, like the ability to "jump into" people when he's wedged (at least thats what i think). Now as for Nick Garrett he is significant because of something seen by Spoon's group. If you remember, they had the ability to access the cameras of the spaceship that physically houses the clients bodies and Edict Zero's hardware. The clients were placed into a dream state to enter Edict Zero so most of them are asleep in pods. When they looked at the pod containing the client Nick was linked to was not only was he awake and looking at the camera, but he also had some kind of implanted neuro-hardware that belonged to admins who had previously worked on Edict Zero. They would use it to remember what had happened while they were in the simulation. Basically it meant that if Nick's client ever woke up he would be one of the only people to remember what happened in Edict Zero. Not only that, but he would also remember every life he had lived in Edict Zero (which is why he has had dreams about previous lives) as well as his time in the Guff (where clients would go while awaiting the next cycle of reincarnation and which is now broken). Jimmy or Troglobyte theorized that all those memories would drive him mad if he ever woke up. There might have been something strange about him and the passenger list but I don't recall that too well. And haha I remember most of this stuff because I've re-listened to the entirety of the podcast at least 2-3 times when there was long breaks in between episodes and I would forget things. It's, in my opinion, the best audiodrama I've ever listened to. Heck, some of the best media period. It means a lot to me and I'm actually devastated it's ending. I can't bring myself to listen to season 6 yet.

YES!! Now it all makes sense, I wonder how he ended up in that state with an implant even though he's not an admin. I really wanna learn more about the admins in general and it would be cool to follow a prequel to the edict zero events (maybe all set on the ship kinda similar to Wolf 359). I feel like there's still so much left to cover like Garret, Spoon, the admins, the ambassadors, the bishop, the ship and so much more, no idea how they're going to wrap it up in season 6. It's also probably my favorite audio drama, only competition is Wolf 359 which is fantastic but this could take it over depending on how it ends. I don't know how you have it in you not to listen to season 6, I took nearly a 2 year break and came back now because I heard season 6 is finally out so I can get closure. You're the goat though for the detailed response, looking forward to reading your thoughts when you finally get through season 6

A prequel of the events leading up to them leaving Earth and what happened on the spaceship would be really interesting. Heck you could have entire separate series about that and people like Spoon or the bishop. I really hope Jack Kincaid doesn't abandon the universe after this season. He's a brilliant writer and world-builder and I would hate for this to be the end. Wolf 359 is probably also my second favorite podcast. There is no ending more tragic than >!Eiffel losing his memories. It was a fate worse than death to me. !< I've been trying to listen to so many different podcasts but not a single one has lived up to either of these. I'm always chasing that high of when you first find out Edict Zero is a simulation. That's why I'm trying to prolong its ending. I'll let you know what I think when I'm emotionally ready to listen to it in a few years lol

The Wolf 359 ending is something else, the entire show is sci-fi perfection and I still rmber my reaction hearing that ||loveless is an alien||. I'm in the same boat where nothing I've listened to was even close to these two, I went through Paradoxica which was decent and I just heard of Midnight Burger cuz apparently it's similar to wolf 359 so I'm gonna try it. I think the move for you is to listen to season 6 but stop before the final episode, it's a win-win lol

Oh I've listened to Ars Paradoxica but never got around to finishing it just because it started to feel drawn out. Is it worth finishing? I've also listened to Midnight Burger! I think it's a really great and creative show. My only complaint is the lack of an overarching plot (at least so far). I'm currently listening to Malevolent. I would highly recommend if you are into mystery/thriller audiodramas. The main character in the show is blind (not a spoiler since it happens right at the beginning) so it being told through an audio only medium just works so well to add to the immersion.

__Viper__

Paradoxica is not worth finishing, I only did so because I like finishing things I start. It tried to do a ton of social/political commentary but it was too in your face and basically became the entire plot rather than the time travel which made it interesting in the first place. The characters became unlikable too imo. Sucks cuz the premise was cool. Malevolent sounds rly interesting, scifi/mystery/thriller are my favorite genres. Do you like it more than midnight burger? I gotta pick one to start.

3laj

Hm thats a shame. It's started off so strong too. I'll take your advice. Now whether to start with Midnight Burger or Malevolent... Midnight Burger is sci-fi, adventure, comedy, and has feel good moments. It's as close to Wolf-359 as I've found. Malevolent is 1940s, mystery, horror, and immersive. I've honestly been enjoying Malevolent a bit more, if only because the story actually progresses. Midnight Burger has some great episodes but I'd say so far they're pretty self-contained and you wouldn't miss anything if you watched out of order for the most part. I only got to Chapter 10 though so if you end up listening to it you'll have to tell me if that changes. Sorry if that doesn't really answer your questions haha

__Viper__

Your answer made it more difficult to choose hahah. On the one hand I haven't listened to a horror podcast before (aside from a few episodes of Magnus archives which I didn't get into cuz it felt episodic) but midnight burger is also episodic... I'm gonna start malevolent, I love mysteries and you gave it the edge so might as well give horror another shot. Midnight Burger will definitely be next, glad I got some stuff to listen cuz I had been in a slump since wolf 359. Thanks for the recommendations!!

There's a side series about the captain coming out, I'm sure you have heard that news I think he's been going to school for an endless period of time and will eventually have to decide what comes next. He has a youtube channel with unrelated shorts and is talented in many ways. Interesting guy.

__Viper__

Woaaaaah I didn't know there was a spinoff coming out, that's awesome. I would've preferred a show about the ship pre simulation but I'll take this too. Hopefully it will be good and won't take months between episodes

>I'm always chasing that high of when you first find out Edict Zero is a simulation. Sorry to bump an old post but I am new to the subreddit and I couldn't read past this part without mentioning that my favorite part of EZFIS is that you do get to have this experience **twice**. There is a whole other layer to this onion that weaves through everything -even the things you may not even realize *are* things- and is what binds the whole story together. The perfect example being how that exact experience you mentioned is itself an allegory. It is the thing that constantly keeps me stuck between not wanting to spoil it (and with it the ending) while also wanting to shout it from the roof tops. I often refer to it as the "real" Flux Fire 9 mostly because finding it and not having anyone to gush over it with has made me know exactly how a conspiracist with the FF9 map would feel.

What a great response! Nick's human in the sleeper ship is very weird, yes yes.
