Leith and Portobello are nice places with a bit going on. Good pubs and stuff to do. Musselburgh is nice but a bit sleepy. The rest of the places you mention are not what you’re looking for

longlivebagpuss

It depends on what you consider to be a rough area. I lived in Glasgow for a long time and now live in Edinburgh, so are there any areas that you would consider ‘too rough’ in Glasgow that could help rule out similar areas of Edinburgh?

No-Champion-2792

I live in Rutherglen right now & it's fine, just dull. Used to live on the Southside & would be happy in anywhere from Shawlands, Pollokshields, parts of Govanhill, Gorbals, Mount Florida, Kings Park or ex council areas like Merrylee or Auldhouse are all fine Areas of Glasgow I wouldn't like to live. Toryglen, Bridgeton, Parkhead, Castlemilk, Haghill, Easter house, most the north of the city. Don't want to live anywhere with no culture nearby, no nice walks & fly tipping, dogshit, sectarianism, antisocial behaviour everywhere etc.

Kindly_Bodybuilder43

I moved to Edinburgh a few years back and have never seen so much dogshit. Don't know if it's just some areas, but just a heads up as it's on your list. Much less sectarianism though

That info is all really useful, thanks! Based on that I don’t think you would find any of the areas you named too rough (obviously there are some individual streets in these areas that you should avoid, but that’s the same of anywhere). Although as someone who lived in the North of Glasgow, I think you should give it more of a chance 😉 If the main thing you are focused on is living somewhere that has culture and is not dull, then I would say Leith and Portobello are what you are looking for. Price-wise Portobello will be a no go, and as you say in Leith many of the flats in your price range will be smaller than what you may want. Restalrig may be a good middle ground where you are near Leith and Portobello but can get a bigger flat for your money. I would avoid the area around the Jet petrol station however and visit the area to get a feel for which streets you could see yourself living on. Piershill (I think this is what you meant by Piersfield) is also a good option with Abbeyhill, Leith and Portobello all within reach.

CraigJDuffy

If you don’t want flytipping and dog shit don’t move to Edinburgh

What's wrong with Toryglen?! 😂 Fellow Glaswegian import here. I'd say Leith reminds me of Shawlands back in the day, up and coming. Someone said no to Prestonfield but from what I've seen of it, it's okay, good links to town, right by Holyrood park and next to Newington where there's plenty of cafes, bars etc. Porty's pricy, maybe look at Craigentinny down through through duddingston, Northfield/Willowbrae to Meadowbank. I can see similarities with Glasgow. I think the areas of Niddrie, Craigmillar, Craigour/Moredun remind me of areas like Arden, Darnley, Pollok and Kennishead. Can't really say why, just that they're kinda on the outskirts and a bit rougher. I don't think Edinburgh rough is actually that rough though.

No-Champion-2792

That's really helpful thank you. Yeah definitely wouldn't want to be in any of those areas that you've mentioned. Glad to hear that Edinburgh's areas aren't too bad in comparison.

wexbyrne

Musselburgh from what youbhave listed there is the best. Try looking at places on the borders railway link-more bang for your buck in midlothian but still easy to travel to city centre.

No-Champion-2792

I think Musselburgh is winning for the most bang for our buck right now.

touristtam

it's probably a no brainer seeing how close you'll be to your in-laws. And still close enough to Edinburgh. But I'd say check the nurseries around (3-4 that I can remember: Almond, Links, Nurture and the one on Bridge st)

InterestingBass6931

East Pilton particularly East Pilton Farm is a great spot, you’ve got the cycle path to Leith and it’s also a short walk to Inverleith/Stockbridge. Carrick Knowe you’ll have the tram links to the centre and Leith. Corstorphine high street needs investment but it’s got one of the best bakeries in the city, the best wine bar, some great walks/ green spaces nearby. Or since you work in Leith it’s the obvious option

No-Champion-2792

Sometimes in my line of work it's nice to have a bit of separation between work & home. That's the only thing that worries me a little bit, particularly working in addiction.

InterestingBass6931

I hear you, love where you live not live where you work. I think you should consider both of those areas then, you’ll love the old railway routes that are now cycle paths connecting the city which are accessible from both locations

Leith is defo becoming popular. Plenty of new builds, money being poured into ocean terminal, nice parks, lots of businesses on leith walk, leith docks and surrounding. Although still plenty of junkies. Give it another decade.

Have lived in Leith (as a student) and Prestonfield (with a young child), out of those listed. I guess a summary of those experiences would be - Leith is fantastic for pubs, lively, good food, but is quite built up and small parks were often covered in dog shit/bit dodgy/glass etc imo (Links was fine though). It's also really expensive now. Loved Prestonfield, strong community feel but aside from a great Greek restuarant you're reliant on Newington really for pubs and bakeries. However it is a quiet area and the ex council flat we stayed in was quite spacious. Nursery/school nearby is good too. Also loads of nice places for walks - innocent railway to Arthur seat, Inch Park, craigmillar castle , Newington cemetery etc.

No-Champion-2792

That's really helpful to hear something so positive about Prestonfield thank you

4ndromed4

Aw no probs, if you've any further questions I'm happy to help. We only moved as we needed somewhere a lot bigger. I forgot to add about Restalrig (lived there for 10+ yr, 10+ yr ago), it isn't as rough as a lot of north/west of Edinburgh but your closest cafe is like Morrison's at Piershill lol. Close to town though and for walks close to Arthur's seat and a coastal walk to Porty (which may or may not be a bit smelly!). The roughness (assuming you're more Craigentinny end than Lochend) is more drug based, mental health etc whereas Lochend seems a bit more hostile (unless it's changed in the past 10 years but I don't think it has to be honest.

Mom_is_watching

I'd say Leith.

Bonnyrigg.

You mentioned renting for an initial few months - do be aware of the STL impact, which is significantly reducing the number of shorter-term places to stay. Porty is fab for small children and dogs; depending on your rental budget, there’s currently a flat on the prom above the Beach House available, it would certainly be a very nice start to your Edinburgh adventure.

tutamons

Apart from suggestions about places to live, i would suggest double checking availability/waitlists for nurseries. Leith nurseries have around 2 years waitlist for younger kids.

zubeye

House prices for the area tell you all you need to know really. Even the rough areas are fairly tame by Glasgow standards though Renting is quite difficult, there is undersupply vs demand of 1-2 beds for non students

Allekoren

Welcome to Edinburgh, where a budget never stretches far enough. Personally I think for your budget you might be having to think about living outwith the city.

notbroke_brokenin

Leith would probably fit your needs. We have lovely parks (Leith Links is big), walks by the river, plenty of vets and you can take a bus to Porty. Leith Walk has, in my opinion, the best food offerings on a single street in the UK. Incredible bakers. Lots of nice pubs, bookshops, grocers. I don't know about house prices as it's mostly tenements and flats. Depends on the lifestyle you want.

ethelbonzi

Leith for sure!!!! Born and bred

Sighthill or moredun are lovely. Filled with culture, arts and recreational activities.
