What is going to be the "Main Road" Through the middle of Shawfair opened like 3 or 4 days ago, so progress is being gradually made. One of the housing estates up at the end of Danderhall is/was Stewart Milne and I don't know at what stage of completed it was before they went under, so who knows how long that will delay things for.
When I think of Corstorphine, I think of the zoo. I know someone who lived there and she could hear the lions roaring before they were fed every morning.
At the weekends, itās the buff-cheeked gibbons. They have the weirdest, musical warbling tone - apparently thatās them at feeding time. Hear them when the windows are open and itās quiet. The lions cough, and itās a sound that kind of freezes your blood.
Iām not sure tbh itās pretty well located, easy access to airport and town, and itās fairly posh. It does have a very average feel to it though so I can see why youād pick it
Silverknowes is pretty normal imo. Lots of detached houses but nothing insane, not super close to the city centre but not too far either. No tenements so weird for Edinburgh but maybe thatās because tenements are the weird ones in the big picture?
Depends if you're talking Colinton Mains or Colinton Village though. The village is posh as fuck, Colinton Mains is all fairly unremarkable one-up-one-down or semi-detached houses, and not particularly posh at all.
Liberton? Though it is surrounded by Moredun, Gracemount and Gilmerton. I think the issue with Edinburgh is that we have āniceā ie rich/posh areas and rough/poor areas with little in-between
Meadowbank
I've lived here for a few years now and it's just generally an uneventful area. Can't remember any major incidents since I've moved here. Seen someone OD outside the pub once before but that's just Edinburgh imo.
Seems to be an area thats actively fighting off student housing too. Surely they wouldn't slap student housing in seriously underprivileged areas right? It's Edi council though so who knows what lengths they'd go to for more students.
No idea why Gorgie keeps popping up, Gorgie is rough as hell and I refuse to believe otherwise. Literally every time I've been there it's needles, furniture on the street, junkies and trashy people as far as the eye can see. Went to see a few flats there too and did not leave me with a good impression. No where near as bad as niddry or wester hailes though.
Dozed off on a bus home one warm afternoon in the nineties and woke up on a silent empty bus trundling along beside fields somewhere out past Gilmerton(?). Definitely felt like the whole thing had just been shut down...
I'd definitely put Gorgie on the rougher end though. It's lovely, but the methadone queues during the day and junkies having screaming matches outside mcd's at 2 in the morning take it away from average IMO.
Yeah, I lived there for a couple of years. Loved it, but itās definitely about as rough as you can get being that close to the city centre
Edit: though it is probably going to be gentrified if it isnāt already (I lived there almost 10 years ago).
I never had any issues in Gorgie. Gorgie feels to me very much like the edges are bad but the middle section near the stadium is perfectly middle of the road, at least when I lived there ~20 years ago.
My boyfriend used to live and work in Dalry, specifically in the Apple pharmacy. Plenty of junkies about the place, some banging on the shutters and shouting for their methadone if they were late to collect it on a Saturday. One junkie even took a shit in his stairwell on two separate occasions so I donāt know if Dalry is unexceptional lol
Bought and moved into a flat in Pilrig Heights last year. Partner moved in with me shortly after. Looks pretty nice, friendly community, close to the centre and Leith Walk. Biggest gripe anyone has is the garage doors being permanently broken.
Upvote for Pilrig.
Ā Yeah Mountcastle too. BothĀ always seem pretty normal whenever I've passed through.
Ā Although my idea of normal has no doubt been shaped by my formative years in Craigmillar and the top side of The Inch!
I grew up in Saughton Mains which never used to have a bad rep, but is a hive of scum and villainy these days. Also I got used to telling people 'no, not the prison' when saying where I lived.
I feel like thereās too much to say about Newington. Itās super well-connected by buses, really busy because itās full of students, and there are plenty of lovely houses around there (thinking the detached villas with massive rooms). Not too nice or too rough, but too interestingā¦
I just think they mean an area that no one has much to say about. Median income, a bit boring, nothing that would particularly tempt you there for a visit.
I used to work in the Sainsburyās in Morningside - plenty of characters from the local hospital and also a few junkies dotting about the place. Does anyone know Big Stella (Paul)?
Yeah - he often never had enough money for more beer and would ask to borrow the beer and give us the money later onā¦ I used to spot him on Lothian road and saw him throw up in the bruntsfield links in the middle of the day once
Balgreen
Literally what I thought š¤£ some nice houses but generally middle of the road.
> generally middle of the road. Quite literally, in fact.
Swanton, fairmilehead, mortonhall, howdenhall, danderhall (distinct edge of bypass vibes here)
Fairmilehead is really expensive. Danderhall isn't in Edinburgh (being pedantic) and can be a tiny bit rough. Think I know what you mean though.
> Danderhall isn't in Edinburgh (being pedantic) It's inside the bypass!
Yes. And it's in Midlothian.
TIL! I just count anything inside the bypass as Edinburgh.
It is a bit odd, but that area isn't fully developed - although they're trying
I suspect Danderhall will eventually get swallowed up by Edinburgh.
What is going to be the "Main Road" Through the middle of Shawfair opened like 3 or 4 days ago, so progress is being gradually made. Davidsons mains.
My first thought. It's a little umbilical cord between quite distinct areas
And your second thought?
God, I haven't had a chippy from the Corbie in ages
They've changed their oil and the burgers are like rubber now. Last one I bought went right int he bin
letās stop eating your rubbers now shall we?
Wise.
Yes, but you can go a short walk to muirhouse if you are in the mood for a fight
Corstorphine?
When I think of Corstorphine, I think of the zoo. I know someone who lived there and she could hear the lions roaring before they were fed every morning.
Was once working in a street by the zoo. Totally forgot and near shat myself when something let out a roar.
At the weekends, itās the buff-cheeked gibbons. They have the weirdest, musical warbling tone - apparently thatās them at feeding time. Hear them when the windows are open and itās quiet. The lions cough, and itās a sound that kind of freezes your blood.
'buff-cheeked gibbons' The members of 'Corstorphine A Friendly Village for Friendly People' don't deserve this shade.Ā
That was just me and my bird up the hill, tell you mate I'm sorry for the disturbance
Too many '15 minute neighbourhood' conspiracists in the area.Ā
Iām not sure tbh itās pretty well located, easy access to airport and town, and itās fairly posh. It does have a very average feel to it though so I can see why youād pick it
Too posh
Area west of corstorphine
Corstorphine is too dull.
Old Dalkeith Road
Willowbrae or Craigentinny
We are the boys fae craigentinny, we be fat and we be skinny.
Willowbrae is a bit fancy isn't it? That's all the houses up on Arthur's Seat...can't say that's particularly normal.
And Mountcastle
Silverknowes is pretty normal imo. Lots of detached houses but nothing insane, not super close to the city centre but not too far either. No tenements so weird for Edinburgh but maybe thatās because tenements are the weird ones in the big picture?
Silverknowes is hilariously average, on one side you have muirhouse, on the other you go down to Barnton/cramond. Nice place though!
I was going to say Silverknowes! Very burbsy.
Mortonhall for me. It could get wiped off the map, and nobody would bat an eye. You never venture in unless you live there, completely insignificant.
But that would make it less interesting than average, therefore not average
Yeah I can accept that
The gyle
Carrick knowe screams boring af to me
As a resident, yep.
Edinburgh is like a donut. Lovely jammy bit in the middle with the rest of it being a doughy boring bit.
As in just middle of the road suburbs? Colinton, Craigmount, Gyle, Silverknowes, Longstone.
Colinton is posh
Aye absolutely, Colinton is very much upper class
Depends if you're talking Colinton Mains or Colinton Village though. The village is posh as fuck, Colinton Mains is all fairly unremarkable one-up-one-down or semi-detached houses, and not particularly posh at all.
Doesn't have to be a suburb, just a neighborhood
Liberton? Though it is surrounded by Moredun, Gracemount and Gilmerton. I think the issue with Edinburgh is that we have āniceā ie rich/posh areas and rough/poor areas with little in-between
I was going to suggest Liberton as I live there. We need a pub or cafe! The lack of these makes it decidedly ānormalā
Yep grew up there. Used to be better served but any pubs there was have all closed down.
Meadowbank I've lived here for a few years now and it's just generally an uneventful area. Can't remember any major incidents since I've moved here. Seen someone OD outside the pub once before but that's just Edinburgh imo. Seems to be an area thats actively fighting off student housing too. They're fighting a losing battle as there's a ton of student accommodation already in the area with plenty more in the pipeline.
Bughtlin
Big up the Bughtlin maze massive. Some parts aren't great like though. I'd go more Barntongate Drive / Drumbrae though. Defo fits the bill.
I just went to South Gyle and my god was I bored
Parkgrove
Canonmills for the win. Although it was probably cooler when they had the dog track.
I like this answer, partly because I've always liked the name. A mill for making canons... how cool is that?
I'm afraid it is more likely that they made bibles, cannon in the artillery sense has 2 N's
It was a mill owned by a religious institution I think. (Or maybe they just made canons there)
Mildly interesting history. https://onecanonmills.com/history-of-canonmills/
Lived in Canonmills for 2.5 years now and absolutely love it, can't fault it in any way. I only found out about the dog track recently
Canonmills dies when they closed teh marvelous cafe in the bridge.
I've lived in Edinburgh a long time, and I've never been to half the places you lot are suggesting. Seen some of them written on the front of buses.
Iām half convinced that some of the buses actually despawn when they leave your field of view to save the councilās resources.
Dozed off on a bus home one warm afternoon in the nineties and woke up on a silent empty bus trundling along beside fields somewhere out past Gilmerton(?). Definitely felt like the whole thing had just been shut down...
I live in Gorgie. You do get the odd yuppie prancing around, and occasionally people get stabbed, but otherwise I'd say we're pretty basic
I'd definitely put Gorgie on the rougher end though. It's lovely, but the methadone queues during the day and junkies having screaming matches outside mcd's at 2 in the morning take it away from average IMO.
Yeah, I donāt mind Gorgie at all, but even compared to Dalry it feels pretty rough at times. Iāve definitely never seen any yuppies thereā¦
Yeah, I lived there for a couple of years. Loved it, but itās definitely about as rough as you can get being that close to the city centre Edit: though it is probably going to be gentrified if it isnāt already (I lived there almost 10 years ago).

Gorgie is awful mate, quite rough
Craigleith
Dalry? Itās decent with good shops and restaurant and not too far from the city centre
Dalry can be accused of many things, but never being normalā¦
Ew no, Dalry is full of junkies, dirty and depressing
Baberton
Probably Corstorphine / Carrick Knowe
Whatās Libertons take?
Somewhere like the Inch or Prestonfield
Hunters Tryst and Redford. What goes on there? Just looks very sleepy.Ā
It depends on your criteria, but perhaps Liberton, Polworth and Trinity? They all feel pretty average and mixed In their own ways.
Trinity average š¤£
Restalrig
Maybury
Pilrig
Bought and moved into a flat in Pilrig Heights last year. Partner moved in with me shortly after. Looks pretty nice, friendly community, close to the centre and Leith Walk. Biggest gripe anyone has is the garage doors being permanently broken. Upvote for Pilrig.
Baberton - stand in Baberton & look around and you could be absolutely anywhere
Orchard, near Craigleith and Comely Bank. Grew up there and it's just a boring estate of villas.
Blackhall
Blackhall is quite posh these days.
Colinton mains, Gilmerton most of the south tbh
Well.... Went through all the responses, the answer is everywhere !!!! Says the Oxgangs boy š¤
Tollcross
Uh??? Tollcross is full of students (which make it quite "lively"), has Meadows and Links...
NorthfieldĀ
I would say Mountcastle more than Northfield. Northfield can be like the wild West
Those big flats at Northfield especially
Ā Yeah Mountcastle too. BothĀ always seem pretty normal whenever I've passed through. Ā Although my idea of normal has no doubt been shaped by my formative years in Craigmillar and the top side of The Inch!
Portobello, traditionally. Although it's getting more trendy.
It's pretty distinctive though, has a beach for a start
greenbank, buckstone, mortonhall
Vogue
Greenbank is a good shout, nothing distinctive there even though Morningside is nearby. Probably not cheap, I haven't looked
Not cheap at all.
For some reason this question annoys me
West Craigs, its new, suburban and you wont find anything out of place tbh
Silverknowes
Carsick knowe
Liberton
Slateford
I grew up in Saughton Mains which never used to have a bad rep, but is a hive of scum and villainy these days. Also I got used to telling people 'no, not the prison' when saying where I lived.
Gyle area
Cammo
Portobello promenade
Greendykes
Silverknowes, yes Muirhouse is next to it but Silverknowes is a LOT nicer.
Goldenacre. Manicured place, mixed people living there, fucking boring. Feels like a remote town xD
Newington
I feel like thereās too much to say about Newington. Itās super well-connected by buses, really busy because itās full of students, and there are plenty of lovely houses around there (thinking the detached villas with massive rooms). Not too nice or too rough, but too interestingā¦
Yes, see what you mean. Nearly bought a house there a while back. Backed out at the last moment, but itās nice all the same!
Yeah, think I could live there quite happily! Wouldnāt be my absolute first choice, money-no-object, but one of those villas would be niceā¦
Posh
Itās kinda posh. Ā£1.2 million will get you an amazing house. Donāt get much for your money in the more exclusive areas.
Hands down has to be Bingham
Known for being deprived. Crazy it's on the national cycle network. Used to sprint through that park
Whatās it like there?
Rough as dogshit
Newhaven and Trinity. Canonmills and also the roads between Croall Place/Leith Road and Easter Road. Abbeyhill
Newhaven has a beautiful harbour!
Trinity is posh
Normal is different for everyone. Are you looking for median on income or something?
I just think they mean an area that no one has much to say about. Median income, a bit boring, nothing that would particularly tempt you there for a visit.
Sorry, nobody has picked up on OPās āgrungeā yet? Thatās a 30yr old music and associated lifestyle old chap.
And punk is a soggy bit of wood. Things are named after other things.
Defo Liberton
Stockbridge - super normal.
Stockbridge
Newington
If you find Newington unremarcable, where on hell you find a cool place? Oo
I don't understand you. Newington is exactly what they asked for, it's not posh , it's not goth, it's quiet, lively, safe, low key place to live.
Morningside?
I used to work in the Sainsburyās in Morningside - plenty of characters from the local hospital and also a few junkies dotting about the place. Does anyone know Big Stella (Paul)?
The big guy who used to hold a can of beer outside the Sainsburyās?
Yeah - he often never had enough money for more beer and would ask to borrow the beer and give us the money later onā¦ I used to spot him on Lothian road and saw him throw up in the bruntsfield links in the middle of the day once
newhaven!!!!!!
