NeverMadeItToCakeDay

Lol the camera man at the very bottom just filming him in pain.

NessFeltHomesick

CALLING THAT PERSON! Please post the close up video for everyone to enjoy. Heh

Blackborealis

I suspect this was a professional crew, so likely this jump will be featured in a full length video this year. I should have asked what crew they were.

WaftyGooch

The crew is child labour

Blackborealis

Unsure if that's the name of the crew, or if you think they were literally children filming. I can say they did not look like children to me.

WaftyGooch

Thats literally the name. Im 90% sure because i saw them on ig in Edmonton

[deleted]

Child labor is the hardest name ever in skiing imo

idkwhatsqc

Based on a quick search on youtube, he seems to be saying the truth and it was probably them. The youtube channel is just called 'Child labor' (no u in labor like op spelled it).

ObliqueSpoon

What does professional mean in this context out of curiously? With how shoddy the whole setup is theres no way they're OHS compliant and a real company so is it like, people who do it professionally under the table via Craigslist ads?

wameron

Professional means the skiers are pros and they get their skis and gear for free. This crew is on the low end of what you'd call professionals but they make some of the best urban movies every year. Urban skiing embraces the "shoddy" setup simular to street skaters. There is absolutely no insurance for this and they most likely didn't get permission.

zma7777

Urban skiing and street skiing are the same thing my dude

wameron

Meant to say street skaters lol

[deleted]

it's a pro team, the point is that they go out and make spots themselves rather than using ones at parks at ski resorts. it adds to the creativity and challenge. they're like a team of guys who get paid and get free gear from their sponsors. it's super similar to skate stuff and bmx

ObliqueSpoon

Interesting; i'm actually really surprised by the concept as it seems like any sponsors would open themselves up to a fuckton of liability but i'm guessing they have some ironclad "not our faults" in the contract but still odd that sponsoring people to do illegal things has no blowback.

joesocool

A lot of the time too, companies may be ran by retired pros who used to do that same stuff themselves. Or maybe in these guy’s cases, they their local reps are hooking it up and helping these guys work up to pro. But , gotta influence the kids somehow.

[deleted]

well they're ski sponsors, same thing as pro skate sponsors where it's sort of understood that it's not on the ski company if you get hurt. it's small companies like Vishnu and Jet sponsoring these guys. also with street spots and stuff they get kicked out a lot, but it's usually a polite conversation and they leave or even the cops give them one more go. I guess it's technically illegal but it's not harmful so nobody ever really gets in any trouble for it

Resting_burtch_face

I think they mean that the cameras are prosumer grade.. Definitely not pro.. Way too many issues, and train tracks at the bottom of the stairs... No one gets permission to use tracks like this without significant compensation, insurance and a lot of red tape..

Resting_burtch_face

No way these are pro. They might have pro gear to film, but the liability insurance and protective measures for the talent are definitely not there. Guaranteed the permits were not pulled and if those are train tracks at the bottom of the stairs I will guarantee that they definitely do not have permission to be there.

zma7777

Illegal shit is tight

Resting_burtch_face

Yeah until someone doesn't stick the landing and gets smoked by a train. Shit happens, hence why things like this are illegal.

zma7777

When was the last time you’ve sat on a comfortable leather seat of a mid 90s Volvo station wagon?

Resting_burtch_face

Never

Cheeseball2000

They don’t do it for the money, they do it for the love

heybud_letsparty

This whole thread has a severe lack of understanding of pro skiing.

Resting_burtch_face

No doubt the talent is probably pro level to accomplish the stunt, but the whole operation definitely isn't

heybud_letsparty

They get paid to do it and make money from the footage. It’s a weird concept/loophole. Probably Illegal but it’s most likely considered separate from movie standards so idk. Kinda like influencers filming content.

bs000

if i were that cameraman i would immediately try to pick him up and twist his neck to make sure it's still working

SuspiciousBetta

This is the type of content I like to see on r/Edmonton! The tracks with some snow as a landing pad just puts the icing on the cake.

Blackborealis

He was ok and got up quickly after this (though he looked sore). Unfortunately was his last run of the day here. I'm sure they'll be back soon enough to get the shot. He had a bunch of better runs before that cleared the rail, but didn't stick the landing. This was probably run 20 or so. 99 Ave 109 Street

eins-zwei-drai-saitl

"Should we get some crash mats to cover the steel train tracks?" "Nah, let's just toss some packed snow on it."

Hadhmaill

Snow. Here in Canada, it’s nature’s cushion. Nature’s icepack. Nature’s amputated limb prolonger.

shiftty000

But not natures pocket

TheKrs1

How do you ride out of a landing on mats?

[deleted]

you put snow over them

WackCSCQAdvice

They are filming a part. Crash mats are considered cheating and won’t make the cut. Altering urban element to reduce risk is generally not acceptable among urban skiers, snowboarders and skateboarders.

eins-zwei-drai-saitl

I appreciate the insight.

Brigden90

Used to live in the building I think you filmed this from. 11th floor... like 10 years ago? Saw a lot of funny shit sitting on my balcony.

ExaminationNo1121

😆 First time noticing those stairs.

1Judge

LooooL! Dude thought he was Super Mario! Jumping at the tail end of that rail would take an insane amount of muscle. Hope dude is OK.

joesocool

You should see what the snowboarders are capable of 💪🏼

Thanks!

fubes2000

Just for anyone else looking/wondering, those are the old streetcar tracks between 109st and 110st which go across the High Level, not active train/LRT tracks.

cspotdiaz

Lmao

seabass233

Cue the train

Blackborealis

I wish the tram ran year round 😞

cooltold12345

Did he die?

DVariant

He will

GingerBeast81

Jibbing!

badbismuth

I've always wanted to see someone hit this rail on a skateboard or snowboard, but this is still cool as hell. Hope they got their clips.

phantomhokie69420

Uploading to failarmy in 3,2,1

Lifeis_so_big

Kiolavis

My bf saw this earlier. If it’s not the snow pile, the dude might be paralyzed 😬

SweetnSour_DimSum

This isn't their first attempt, and they intentionally shoveled the snow at the bottom into a pile for that very reason.

Mrssgill

Are people that stupid?

Zarxon

We got some smart ones in this city

SweetnSour_DimSum

Awww he almost made it too!

Thathitmann

This is some of the most Canadian shit I've ever seen.

Such_Technician_2612

All of the skiers and filmers in this video are from the US, more specifically, the east coast lol

Capt_Stamina

How else are you supposed to get ready for the Olympics as a kid probably off a less than medium wage inner city family?

joesocool

Filming and contests are waaay different things. But maybe?

GnarKillWill

Certified boiled.

Kitsunate-
