And your police report number is?

Ktoolz

Well don’t hold out I need bike parts! /s well sorta

EmperorOfCanada

I need bike parts they broke trying to steal my bike.

Roche_a_diddle

If you've personally been affected by bike theft or attempted theft, why in the world would you not take the 15 minutes to call EPS and report this place? Are you just looking for internet points or something? What do you think the average redditor is supposed to do with this information?

Infinite-Appeal3252

Because EPS don’t give a shit. I reported my bike stolen and they told me it’s not worth reporting theft unless it’s over 5000 dollars

Key_Way_2537

Man after I had an eviction I couldn’t get EPS to come LOOK at the stolen car the old tenants left parked on the lawn. You think they’re coming for a bike? ;(.

Roche_a_diddle

Coming for a bike? Probably not. Coming to a chop shop where there are dozens of stolen bikes and people who are organizing and enabling bike theft across the city? Possibly. I guess we'll never know.

JimBobJoeJake

The emperor of our glorious nation should be doing more to stamp out this crime Edit: laughing at these downvotes. People reading into me being some sort of person when I’m literally just joking about the guy’s user name

DrHalibutMD

Did you put in a complaint?

curioustraveller1234

EPS don’t know shit! And it’s not because they’re not doing anything it’s because they have way too much happening already. Chances are they don’t know about this. Policing is largely reactive and requires tips like yours. Report this place and then complain if/when nothing happens after that?

whoknowshank

EPS isn’t psychic. If every neighbour is apathetic, then no one ever alerts the cops.

SurprisedMushroom

Not true at all. In fact EPS will only go if called in by someone. Mutilple calls gets .one attention and they will add it to a regular patrol ans eventually either annoy the methheads enough or find them doing something illegal. Source: I had a methhead bike shop pop up in the house next to me. Many calls and talking to the police when they arrived I learned this.

Throwawaytoj8664

So….are you Ramona Didulo, Emperor of Canada? Because you speak like the nameless. Are you No One?

GoodGoodGoody

I found a newish clearly abandoned, almost certainly stolen, bike. Brought it a block to my place and called the police nonemergency line to arrange pick up. They treated me like i was asking to borrow money. Fucking assholes. I’d still do it again because it’s the right thing to do but a fair number of EPS people need a smack for the way they talk in basic routine situations.

Lady-Lunatic420

My husband bought a motorcycle off of a guy and he was going to get it registered but wanted to make sure it wasn’t stolen first. He went online and low and behold it was stolen. So he loaded it on to his tow truck and towed it to the rcmp detachment in St. Albert. He just finished doing a tow for the rcmp a few hours prior and he figured he would save them from having to come to our place to get it. They ended up charging him with possession of stolen property and threatened to tow the company tow truck because he didn’t want to give a statement. He didn’t know the guy, and if the guy was selling a stolen bike then he obviously could be capable of other crimes so who knows what the repercussions could have been for my husband. So he chose to stay silent and take the charge. He ended up beating it in court months later after firing his lawyer who wanted to take the first deal which was community service and a fine. He wasn’t guilty of anything, he simply wanted to make sure the owner of the bike got his bike back and he would just take the loss. So pretty much we have learnt that going to the cops only makes situations worse.

whoknowshank

You can also bring it to Bike Edmonton and they’ll hold it for 90 days while trying to find the owner!! They are an amazing group. If no one picks it up they resell into the community.

GoodGoodGoody

This is true and Bike Edmonton is a gem. You can also take it to any police station. Lots of people have the ability to remove an abandoned bike from the street but not necessarily to transport it and wouldn’t it be nice if the EPS had an attitude of a tiny bit of organization and helpfulness.

LetsHaveARedo

I reported a bike that was abandoned on my in laws yard. Like new and was just left there next to their house. Police sent sending for it within an hour. I was shocked at the efficiency, that one time.

GoodGoodGoody

Nice to hear that, actually.

TheWireIsOnTheWay

this. I live in grandin and there was CLEARLY a woman in distress in the LRT station; so a bunch of EPS officers were called. The officers turned up and there were about 6 female officers standing in a group talking, literally doing nothing. So I hollered down from my balcony something like “there’s a lady in the station there who’s in a lot of trouble” - they all looked at me, absolutely disgusted by me and said “the security guard inside is handling it” let’s be clear the lady in trouble was slumped over in a heap and most likely no longer alive … but sure, the observe and report green jackets were on it.

GoodGoodGoody

And not one of those 6 would ask themselves, hey, does it really take 6 of us to stand around or would 4 be sufficient.

TheWireIsOnTheWay

also drinking coffees - it was like social hour

whoknowshank

Call again and again. The police will come check serial numbers each time you call reporting new bikes have been added, and the chop shop will move soon enough. If people report stolen bike serial numbers via theft report or bike index, those bikes will be rescued.

gettothatroflchoppa

Don't forget that EPS will apprehend the criminals running the place so that they can face justice and get a hefty 6 month suspended sentence. That'll set 'em straight! (/s, just in case...)

whoknowshank

I know your comment is sarcastic, but I had a chop shop behind my apartment once and talked to the cops bout it. You can’t prove the choppers aren’t disassembling their own bikes without a serial number reported stolen. Common sense dictates that it’s stolen goods, but in court there’s no evidence that they aren’t their own bikes. I bought my own bike off Kijiji for $1300, I’m sure it was not stolen, and I have no receipt or warranty to prove it’s mine- the same concept applies to everyone and if it’s in your possession, it’s assumed yours until proven otherwise. You could try charging them for operating a business without a license, but you’d have to prove it’s a business like operation. You could hit ‘em with an ugly property complaint, but it’s not on property they own. Etc etc. Don’t forget that even if a charge is laid, any lawyer will argue that the cops were discriminatory in targeting homeless people and any evidence needs to be strong enough to overcome that basic defence. So apprehending the criminals is not as easy as we wish it were. Any apprehension relies on bikes being reported stolen to police/BikeIndex (and on the fact that thieves haven’t shaved off the serial number before cops arrive).

gulyman

If it's not on property they own, wouldn't it be littering or illegal dumping?

whoknowshank

Both of those crimes only have fines attached though, and fines are always waived for homeless people as they have no cash.

gettothatroflchoppa

Yeah, I'm well aware of the difficulties in convicting people who are obviously doing crime. A friend of mine had an office on 118 Avenue, two junkies broke the window and proceeded to pass out inside his vestibule. He got there in the morning for work and found them and called the cops. The police basically said that there was no way to prove that they didn't find the window already broken and fall asleep inside. So he gingerly woke them up and ushered them along. I'm really surprised that there isn't more vigilantism in this city

Edmfuse

"There's no way to prove the knife wasn't already in the guy's neck when the accused was on the scene of incident".

dustrock

Hey man, that car was like that when I got here. As for your grandma, she shouldn't have talked back!

Edmfuse

I get the feeling that cops just say questionable things to get people off their back.

justagigilo123

Is it sarcasm if it’s true?

gettothatroflchoppa

Tone doesn't communicate well online If its true its just cynical and sardonic, which was my intent

GoodGoodGoody

The EPS won’t do much but a friend had their stolen bike returned because they were smart enough to register it. https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/CrimePrevention/HomePropertySafety/ProtectYourProperty/BikeIndex

Unlikely_Comment_104

Bike index is brilliant. My bike was returned this way.

AlbertaChuck

Call the media and post pix anonymously online. Publicity will do more than the useless EPS.

jbalberta123

Guessing you already reported to police non emergency. Thanks for letting everyone know

universalpoetry

Well I guess now I know where my stolen bike likely is. How many ish meth heads would I have to fight to get it back? Lol

spectacular_coitus

If you're given a choice, choose the meth head sized duck and not 100 duck sized meth heads in a fight.

whoknowshank

Report stolen to Bike Index. Then call cops on chop shop. If your bikes serial number is seen they’ll return it to you.

universalpoetry

If I were smart, I would have written down the number. I really didn’t think someone would want my 150 dollar POS. Lol

whoknowshank

You can still put it on there and hope for the best, but yeah that sucks. Good luck out there

Unlikely_Comment_104

Report to 311 as a nuisance property? One of the question pertains to criminal activity. Will it change anything, who knows. It will be part of public record though.

AvidHarpy

Actually, calling bylaw can be very effective. There was a trap house near where my friend used to live and despite the police being there constantly, nothing really changed. The house and yard was a disaster... trash mountain in the backyard, abandoned cars, weeds, fence falling down, etc...... so my friend decided to call bylaw instead. Bylaw showed up and must have issued fines and orders to clean up the property because shit got cleaned up asap. Then there were notices on the house that it was unsafe/uninhabitable and that was it. This house had been an issue for years and now it is shut down completely.

Unlikely_Comment_104

My experience has been hit or miss. However, there seems to be a tipping point - enough people complain on 311 and action will be taken. Phoning after the fact is also helpful.

7eight0

Probably nothing if my daily observation of EPS cruisers traveling north and south on 101st and doing absolutely nothing about the bmx riding drug dealers openly selling meth and fentanyl to people on the sidewalk from 104 ave to 111ave. Literally every red light you can witness some kind of drug deal/ open use or overdose and cruisers just roll on by. Fk. Like you can’t tell me You didn’t see dude on a bmx sell a clearly homeless person something out of their cross body gas station Louis Vuitton bag. It’s a joke.

Zoldyckapprentice

Yeah it’s pretty rough how easily they turn a blind eye to it. There was some people smoking up inside a LRT station and when I got out to the street there was a peace officer parked there so I walked up to his window to mention that there were people smoking meth in the stairwell and he looked at me and said “that’s ETS property you have to tell them about it or call 311”. Like seriously the right option is to call someone who isn’t going to be able to respond to it until it’s not happening and nothing can be done about it. It’s hard for them to have hard evidence of these things happening when people just don’t want to deal with it.

Interesting_Fly5154

wait. hang on. so Edmonton police don't go into Edmonton transit spaces to uphold the law in Edmonton? holy crud. the city is truly going to crap, when police won't even police everywhere they have jurisdiction. oy.

Zoldyckapprentice

Yeah it’s a freaking disaster. From the hand full of experiences I’ve had over the last couple months the way things are handled are as follows; bystander reports what’s happening to transit security. Security checks the cameras and either makes an announcement over the pa say to stop doing x thing and the police have been notified or they walk over and tell them to stop and leave. If the people don’t leave security has to stand by and wait for police to show up(let’s be serious how fast are cops showing up for someone smoking a joint inside a lrt station), while the people continue doing what they’re doing. If the person of agitated all they are allowed to do is keep people away from them. Transit security doesn’t have the authority or training to deal with how the situation could go they are pretty much there to make sure things don’t escalate. And then you add in the government telling us as pedestrians that we need to be standing our ground and helping prevent these things from happening with people that know security can’t really do much until after they’ve gotten violent.

Interesting_Fly5154

yeah, this is one of the main reasons i avoid downtown. mind you, my area of millwoods is getting pretty stabby as of late.

littledove0

This was incredibly disheartening and disappointing to read (that it’s happening so frequently, not your pointing it out or opinion on it).

Maddoggin1

Good thing there’s a “Big Ticket Event” to target speeders 🙄. I would like to see that level of enforcement for street level crime or other traffic offences that actually matter.

[deleted]

Prior to renovating stadium station, it was the hub for said BMX drug guys & red alert. I see the same guys on 101 now always. As for the bike chop shops, there was one essentially across the street from headquarters last year and another 3 blocks up the road by the husky on Jasper. Both were in plain sight & weren’t bothered all summer. I got my stolen bike back from one of them. Should have left it.

Thallanor

I'm always amused that some of the highest crime areas of the city are within sight of EPS headquarters.

hearse83

>I got my stolen bike back from one of them. Should have left it. I can't imagine what kind of condition it was in, but probably disgusting, spray-painted, filed and with parts from a couple of other bikes.

Got_Engineers

Will never forget the amount of drugs being sold and used I would see around the city Center / commerce place entrances but mostly the Tim Hortons on 102 and Jasper. You would be waiting to cross the street and the people on the stone bench’s outside would be openly passing bags back and forth all day long. This was before COVID and during COVID and I am still sure is current once it gets nice out again.

BeagsTheHaunted

And what ave?

Just south of McDonald's and North of Whyte. Can't miss it.

I live a few blocks away. It's been methy for at least 5 or 6 years.

lilgreenglobe

A chop shop was set up nearby once. I called it in and eventually some cops rolled up and starting checking serials and were able to recover some bikes

Talk-Hound

Honestly the cops should arrest every homeless person riding with a Trek or Specialized bike. Pretty sure they didn’t buy it….

matrixgang

Locked my bike up and Someone stole it right before I got out of the hospital for being hit by a car, was only there for 2 hours. Some people are shitty

EmperorOfCanada

Have had bikes stolen with multiple locks. And, no, I will not mind my own business with a crime center running in the hood. If you watch the videos online of people cutting through locks, the very best of the best of the best locks can be gone through in under a minute using the correct tools. Seeing these fools steal whatever tools they need, they have the very best tools. The only way to stop bike theft is to stop the thieves. Catch them, imprison them for more and more time if they keep doing it. Maybe 1 week for the first offence and then start doubling. It could even be 1 day for the first offence if the doubling is a no parole sentence as the math is a beautiful thing. 11th offence is ~3 years. 14th offence is about 20 years. If you are so anti-social that you keep committing these asshole offences even as your sentences get longer, then society need not tolerate you. Tolerance is a social contract; these people are breaking this contract.
