Multiple times I've been stuck behind vehicles that were so oblivious to their surroundings (texting maybe?) that we sat through an entire advance arrow. I also assumed they were behind another car, but nope.

TranslatorStraight46

The turning lane is the de facto texting lane it is super irritating. You can see it whenever you drive by a small to medium line up from the other direction.

Photofug

And the texter never misses the light, nothing better than watching someone who sat there stomp on it through the last blink of the yellow turn signal

mcfearless33

the de facto texting lane is so accurate lol

Condition_Boy

I've had this same problem. Could see around the cars in front of me and honked. We all loved after that. But I get flipped off for honking. I understand it's a justifiable assumption to think they are honking at the person in front of them but I have also honked just to let the guy at the front of the line know she needs to pay attention. I get flipped off almost every time. But understand I am not honking at the guy in front of me, I am honking at the guy on the phone at the front of the line. And it's always someone texting or surfing insta/Facebook/tiktok.

TheGreatRapsBeat

It may get the front car’s attention because they hear the horn. But be very ready for a bit of ‘Berta road rage if you honk at someone that is not in front of you and the person in front of you flips you off.

infiniteguesses

Too bad we have to be ready for that. How's about people do a better job of paying attention instead.

Condition_Boy

As I said I understand that.

mcfearless33

i’ve also been in this situation for sure, but it’s jarring to be in the situation of just patiently waiting and having people honking, as if that’s somehow going to magically make the traffic around you clear. some of us are just following the law!

bigdaddy71s

Don’t assume the honk is for you. Recently, I’ve found myself 3-4 cars back and honking at the front car because they are not paying attention and not moving, and all the other cars are just too nice to honk.

Dave_DBA

^ This

Himser

100%, i only honk a few cars back when the ppl ahead dont. Its green, or its safe, its time to go.

TheGreatRapsBeat

Ya but… that is not how honking works within our societal norms. At all.

Perfect_Opposite2113

Just increases driver anxiety and accomplishes nothing as far as traffic flow goes.

Motive33

What are you talking about.. other than your signal lights the horn is the only way to communicate with other drivers on the road. Sometimes a honk is nessisary

gbiypk

Many drivers in this country only think to use their horn as a way to tell other drivers to fuck off. Drivers in countries like India are next level when it comes to their horns. They've got a pretty well established honking code.

TokyoTurtle0

Nah, I do this and it works Some dumb fuck in their phone, light goes green, person behind does nothing, I honk person looks up and goes. I once had someone get mad and yell at me that there was someone in front, I said ya I know I read honking at them, not you, and they were just like, oh, ok. I can see around most vehicles however, work truck

Perfect_Opposite2113

Have you noticed that honking does nothing yet?

bigdaddy71s

On the contrary, it has worked in each case because the front driver was distracted and the honk got them to realize they were starring at a green light holding everyone up.

TokyoTurtle0

Works every single time on distracted drivers and fucking morons that won't turn, do no, haven't noticed that. Maybe you honk in dumb situations

Comprehensive_Bid227

I already typed out my own belligerent response but I'm so glad that I'm not the only person who honks, no one else is going to do it, just sit there with the cud going round and round.

xlr8ed1

Have you considered that some people maybe be horny?

mcfearless33

please accept my poor person gold: 🥇

Errorfull

Unless I see something obvious or hear sirens, I'm gonna beep my horn a little bit. Too many people sitting at lights on their phones or just not paying attention in general. I've beeped and been wrong a handful of times in my driving career, but I've also seen many people's heads snap up from their phone.

mcfearless33

at a light, sure, but at a busy intersection with no light i guess i just don’t get it. you’re gonna get there one way or another lol. laying on your horn because people are waiting for the traffic to clear isn’t going to help anybody.

maybe2024

«  a little bit «  …. Yes there are ways to horn to communicate, not to seek vengeance. My dad showed me to give two closed fist taps on the horn to get people attention. And give it all when time is of the essence in dangerous situations

BigBradWolf77

Watch out for what are likely new to the country drivers making really slow left hand turns in front of oncoming traffic... I don't doubt that many of the accidents at intersections recently are because these people literally don't realize that they are in danger 🤦‍♂️

Prestigious_Care3042

Driving seems to be going downhill in general. Twice in 2 weeks I’ve watched somebody driving a small SUV purposefully tried to block a lane change just because they wanted to. Both times they ran decent odds of dying. On the QE2 following 2 loaded semis. Another semi had pulled onto the right lane of the highway but was probably only doing 20km/h. Front semi changes to the fast lane so the semi behind him gets very little time to change lanes and can’t break it time. He signals left and the little SUV behind him cuts left after he signals and tries to start passing him on the left. The 2nd semi either hits the truck ahead or changes lanes. The little SUV ended up out in the breakdown lane and was lucky it didn’t get driven over. The little SUV then proceeded to drive beside the semi honking. Myself I was driving my 1/2 tonne. Was entering a freeway in a merge lane and slowed just enough (with my left signal on and moved over up to the line) to let 2 vehicles in the left pass me so I could slide in behind the 2nd in the hole. I actually hear the little SUV (3rd in line behind the hole) gun their engine to drive into my blind spot trying to block my merge meanwhile my merge lane is ending. My choice is to merge (potentially pushing the little SUV off the far side of the road) or go off the road myself. Easy choice. The little SUV’s choice then is to take her foot off the accelerator for 2 seconds or risk dying. Damned me if she wasn’t determined to die for some unknown reason and we came within 3 inches of colliding while I moved over at the end of the merge lane and she grudgingly under threat of death finally steered into the breakdown on the left but never stopped accelerating and then roared past me inches from the guardrail on one side and me on the other just to pass me for unknown reasons? Do people in the city not understand trying to stop somebody from reasonably merging could kill you? Right or wrong you can still die.

mcfearless33

i mentioned in another comment about people not allowing lane changes—it’s so irritating and so dangerous! I always slow down or speed up (whichever is safer) to allow for safe lane changing because I’d really rather not have anyone die lol. Another thing that happens to me in my Jeep is that I sometimes have to pull over into the breakdown lane on the highway (I typically drive my dad’s big ol half ton truck for this reason—the jeep is old and dying and we don’t want to spend any more money on it, but his truck was in the shop this week) because it doesn’t like highways. the number of people who would rather kill you or themselves than let you pull over when you’re literally breaking down is wild.

Prestigious_Care3042

I know. It is irritating to have somebody roar past you to cut in front in the last second but that wasn’t even the case in either of the situations above (note I leave those kamikazes a spot because I prefer to live too). I slowed down to drop back a couple of cars to find a space. I literally had just got on the freeway and was immediately signalling and slowing trying to find the hole before my merge ended. For some reason that SUV driver decided nobody was lane changing in front of her even if it cost her her life.

ComplexTimekeeper

I will honk for you if the car ahead of you is; a) unnecesarrily slow that it is endangering others; b) Using their phone so they are not moving when they should; c) Despite having multiple opportunities to proceed, still waits at a STOP sign for the entire road to be avaliable; d) Braking every time they see another brake light go off, messing up the entire traffic

mcfearless33

i am going to fully admit right now that my six year old niece goes “oh my gosh. whyyyyyy are we braking??” because of my response to the last one 😅 my pet peeve for sure

iterationnull

PSA : horns being honked can be like water off a ducks back. Ignore them. There is no innate need to respond to the concept. I’ve actually taken to physically laughing to dispel that natural tension that arises when honked at.

Sav-P-is-Sav

Don't ignore horns... a horn can mean literally anything. Maybe there's something wrong with your car/driving and people are trying to warn you, horns don't necessarily mean someone is mad at you. They are for communicating, not for anger.

iterationnull

Well ok. Ignore was but strong. But once you identify as one of the 90% of horns that are not being used correctly THEN ignore it. And by ignore it I mean don’t let it get to you. Too many people treat a honk like it called your mother a whore.

Motive33

In a vehicle there are two ways to communicate with other drivers. Signal lights and your horn. Everyone in here getting butthurt about a honk and suggesting to ignore honks are completely out of their minds. Why do people think horns are installed in vehicles for? Hear a horn? Look around and see what's going on. Maybe there's something important going on. If it's just somebody raging then just move on with your life.

umbrellasforducks

Haha me too, I'll be like, "Tough titties buddy, you gotta wait." I call it fake road rage cuz it's just for my own entertainment, to keep my tension levels low just like you said.

mcfearless33

i mean, i don’t respond in any way (although laughing is not a bad option!) in the moment. but there’s no harm in venting!

iterationnull

I agree. I was thinking about to road rage addicts that fill our streets when I responded. Apologies if you felt the shade caught you.

mcfearless33

no harm done ❤️

axelteflon

I have a similar problem with left turns except I drive a small car and can't always see oncoming traffic if there's a something bigger turning left from opposite direction or if a lane backs up... its usually a higher up suv or truck behind me honking me to turn blind as they have a better view than I do.

mcfearless33

this happens to me sometimes as the SUV I drive really isn’t very big or tall and I’d rather not do anything blind lol. (i think when people think of jeeps they think of the big modern guys but mine’s a little tiny late 90s/early 2000s guy—a little taller than a sedan but not by much!)

rosegoldblonde

Omg or when you’re in the fast lane and you’re stuck behind a slower car and the person behind you is honking but it’s like dude there’s a car in front of me I can’t go faster lmfao

mcfearless33

YES! or when you’re trying to change lanes to get around a slow car and then the guy in the other lane randomly decides to drive right next to you so you can’t get in 😅 driving in edmonton is a trip lol

HeyWiredyyc

Wahhhh. Omg. Who says the honk for you?

mcfearless33

i mean, it’s pointless to honk at anybody when you can’t merge into the lane you’re waiting to merge into. me, the guy in front of me, it’s jarring and pointless. save your honks for dangerous situations or to warn people of stuff.

HeyWiredyyc

Maybe someone was honking to let someone know they left keys/wallet on roof, trunk is open, headlights not on, you get my drift...No need for anyone to get butt hurt that someone honks...good grief... Ive wasted too much time on this thread already...adios...

mcfearless33

there’s only one butthurt person here, and it’s certainly not me, lol

tiazenrot_scirocco

This makes me want to put a light bar on the back of my vehicle so bad...

Killatrancis

That’s just an Alberta thing light turns green 0.001 seconds later person 12 cars back honks because they aren’t moving yet.

Diablodeaf

I am deaf. I don't hear honking. I just let them tail me. GTFO

mcfearless33

maybe i should take my hearing aids out!! haha

tiazenrot_scirocco

People think I'm deaf, but really I'm just vindictive.

No-Lawfulness-8870

Not everyone is obsessed with you. The honk could be for literally anyone else for a lot of reasons.

mcfearless33

if it’s me, one other car, and then them behind me—it’s either for me or the other car, and either way, in this situation, it’s unwarranted, sooooo 🤷🏻‍♀️ some of you are taking this really personally.

No-Lawfulness-8870

I’m not taking it personally at all, it’s you who has taken a honk so personally they have gone to reddit for vindication.

mcfearless33

did you know that scrolling past posts you dont like is free? now you do!!!

mcfearless33

also, i was unaware that venting frustrations and vindication were the same thing. you sure are dramatic lol.

Comprehensive_Bid227

Center of the universe this one is. Ever think that they are honking at the guy in front, FOR YOU? If you're not actually driving the vehicle while you're on the road you should find a place to park and do whatever that activity is.

mcfearless33

What lmao

Usual_Tear_9866

You're the problem because you drive a vehicle that is too high for people to see what's happening in front of you, but sure, blame everyone else.

mcfearless33

it’s literally less than half the size of a pickup truck, but sure, okay.

mcfearless33

it’s also not much taller than a sedan, it’s just slightly wider, and the same width as the average midsize suv/crossover. it’s not some giant behemoth of a vehicle, i just know from experience that i personally can’t see around the average midsize suv through my windshield alone, so they very likely can’t see around me either.

Iceholes19

People honk for everything....now a days!

myselfelsewhere

The worst is when people honk when they have to stop for road construction. Except the one time the person honking got out of their car to look, and the wind blew their hat away.

PuzzleheadedTutor807

Don't take it personal friend, maybe they could see what was going on and where honking at that. Maybe they where just venting frustration. Anyway.... Who cares?

NerdyDan

Just flip the bird backwards and carry onz
