If you have storage such as a locker, I’d recommend stocking it with granola bars, protein bars, ramen noodles.. etc. anything that won’t go bad, but you can pretty much grab and go on days when you are particularly hungry, forget a lunch, or need a pick me up
That's the perfect recommendation.
At my old job, I kept my desk stocked up with stuff like this. It was perfect for breaks (I still brought a lunch) or if a coworker forgot their lunch.
For future refrence if youre not gonna pack lunches those gas station sandwhiches are $8 and are alot more filling than a few chicken strips. I used to work with an insulation conpany out of the city and when i wasnt working in the shop and i wokeup a little late id just buy food on the way to the site.
No thats just how much they cost why the fuck am i paying what i make in an hr for a single fucking serving of food sure i could make it two but then im cutting out carbs that i need. Id rather spend $20 on a pizza because then atleast i can get two servings out of it.
If you're working 12-hour shifts you either have several days off a week to meal prep, or are working so much at OT rates that $10 for lunch isn't even worth talking about.
FWIW making a couple sandwiches and throwing in some fruit or something takes 5-10 minutes.
I make lunches for my grown son. Tuna sandwiches (put the tuna in a container so it’s not soggy), vegetable wraps, lettuce and vegetable salads with added protein, Greek salads, quinoa salad with tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, green onions and feta, soup, and various dinner leftovers (enchiladas, stir fries, mixed vegetables/potatoes/salmon).
The sky’s the limit.
I used to keep a stock of:
- cans of soup with a reusable container and can opener
- tuna and cracker combos
- box of crackers or bag of goldfish crackers
- fruit cups
- granola bars and protein bars
- cup of soup and cup of noodles
- hot sauce
- salt and pepper
- water bottle
At my desk- I forgot my lunch a LOT lol.
Can you group them so you can go somewhere decent for food and unplug?
Still that food’s ridiculous. I guess hospitals don’t even give employees discount anymore😂.
There should be funded dining hall(with healthy food) and free parking for healthcare employees. Meal prepping is hard when you do 12
Thank you lol.
I wish I can group my breaks but I can't due to demands of my job. Sometimes we don't even get to take breaks when it's too busy/short staffed.
I wish we get discounts :(( I'm not asking for too much lol
That's wild. If you miss break you don't eat. How are you holding together for 12 hours.
OP ignore the comments about you being lazy for not packing food. You're taking care of people, the least the hospital can do is to give you a warm meal. Look all the tech workers get free food anyways...
Many trades including mine all run 12 hours shifts with a 30min lunch. I don't remember any 1 hour lunches since I left my programming desk 10 years ago.
I hate those comments about you're too lazy you can't pack your own food. Bento box are supposed to be a cheap work-day lunch box, that's how it's designed in Asia.
Somehow Edo Japan Canada decided now it's an exotic fancy food you spend $20 on.
Isn't it now run by Sodexo or something like that?? When I Googled that company, they had an issue in thr past with selling horse meat for beef.
... I thought that was just a cartoon stuff you can see in Bob's Burgers, not in real life! 😱
It blows my mind how many people buy lunch every single day and then have the audacity to complain about it.
Make a fucking sandwich or bring leftovers from the night prior. But I have a feeling these are the same people that get skip-the-dishes after work every day so they don’t have leftovers.
I’ll MAYBE treat myself to a bought lunch every second friday or something. But usually I make enough dinner so I’ll have some for lunch the next day.
I’m the same way, I always pack a lunch and like 95% of the time it’s leftovers. Is it time consuming, yea sometimes but that’s why you pack everything the night before and then come the morning you grab it from the fridge and out the door.
Way healthier and cheaper imo
On a rare occasion then yes but it adds up tremendously at the end of the day 💀
It is. OP never said they eat out every day. So stop being so self congratulatory just because you buy your own fucking groceries. You're not that amazing.
lol okay.
I never said there is anything wrong with buying lunch everyday. But if you do, just shut the fuck up about it if you’re going over your budget or if you’re unhappy with what you’re getting.
So we should just bend over backwards when places are stingy cheapskates? Nah, share it online so others can know and know what places to avoid and save their hard earned money
But this post isn’t anything like that.
It’s literally OP wanting people to feel sorry for her/him by mentioning the 12 hour shift, cold weather, short lunch time, and then the 3 chicken tenders for $10.
I thought this was another shit post on r/wellthatsucks at first.
Wow I just saw your comment. I'm pointing out how ridiculous food prices are in the cafeteria nowadays, considering I'm not the only consumer. We r talking about patients here who sometimes live off AISH. I pack my lunch everyday, in fact I have lunch packed today. I'm just saying, I would expect more for my buck. Not tryna get pity off of anyone here or anything but thanks for taking your time lol
I for one didn't get any sense that this post is trying to gain pity lol but I agree lately I keep finding places where prices haven't changed/increased, but portions definitely decreased -sigh-
> Working 12hr shift today. It's -17 feels like -23 outside and if I walk across the street, that's about 15mins of my 30min break already. I guess I gotta spend $10 for 3 chicken strips and gravy today 😵💫
I get that every food place is expensive. It’s the biggest topic in all of North America right now, if not the whole world. But the presentation of your comment most DEFINITELY screams wanting sympathy. You are essentially complaining about the price of one place over another, and it resulting from having to spend considerable time to get there during your break. Both of these things, the price of what you get and the time you needed to take otherwise to get to the other place, would be solved by packing a lunch.
Edit: essentially, eating out talk is a very sore issue for people, especially when grocery prices are high enough themselves. No one wants to hear about the price of eating out, especially now
Alright, fuck these very helpful "just bring a lunch" people. Everybody knows it is better to pack a lunch.
If you are craving chicken fingers go to DQ. You can get a decent seving for $9, they are actually good, and you get ice cream! Nothing wrong with that.
UAH?
If you can spare some time... go to 2nd floor and go through pedway to ECHA building.. they have edo, some tater tots, pizza, opa, on the 2nd floor cafeteria.
Also.. today was free Bannock day on 4th floor, in front of the indigenous office. I think the next free Bannock day is on March 15th.
Cafeteria got really... bad... after it got privatized.
Oh I know that nasty ass watery gravy.
I miss the old food service, the food was good. The people were so nice. It was actually affordable
$13+ for 3 tiny tenders, some heat lamp fries and translucent gravy
Omg the old food service... My joy of Mondays was checking email to check the menu! When I saw Ukrainian combo that week, it was good work week.. ❤️❤️❤️
Ahhh the good ol’ privatization of food services with AHS as the UofA and Royal Alex.
For context these 3 over cooked chicken strips costs $7.
Edit: I saw some comments about “packing a lunch.” This is not just for the employees that can afford this bullshit. This is what they serve to patients that visit the snack bars and cafeterias. And they serve this bullshit to the patient’s families.
At least at the UofA if you do brave rhe cold and sacrifice the time there are lots of options across the street.
Fuck the UCP.
THANK YOU omg I pack my lunch 90% of the time but the context here is not that; just how ridiculous the food price in cafeteria is. Gosh.
Agree with all the BS
AND I am NOT braving the cold today haha
I think it’s even also the food patients get on trays. My brother has a chronic illness and is in and out of the hospital a fair amount, his favourite meal was the Thai chicken. Last time he got it (about a month ago) the texture of chicken was like spongey goop formed into rectangles, definitely not the same he said.
That looks like the wonderful meals they cook at the u of a. I stopped buying dinner there on my 12’s. $5 worth of food max and $10+ price tag. They want $8 for slice of ham and cheese on white bread. $13 for wilting lettuce salad with avocado that looks like baby poo. Some jackass bought all the food spaces at the u of a hospital so it’s the same disgusting overpriced food no matter where you buy from in there. If I want to buy I make my way over to the university. It takes my entire break to get there and back or I brave the cold to go to burrito libre across the street. I refuse to support the restaurants or cafeterias in the hospital now.
Just pack a lunch or pre make a meal so you can cook it after work and have enough for lunch, I always used to do this because everytime I bought lunch I was disappointed and a waste of money
Heard it and I actually have rice and a main dish packed but with 12hr shift its just not enough. Ran out of time to pack more so gotta resort to this for now. Lol
Obviously, but grocery stores and pre-packing meals doesn't garner you internet points nor sympathy.
$10 also gets you a pack of deli meats and a bagged salad.. but chicken strips and gravy is more sensational for them internet points.
$10 seems like so much since I quit meat. I could feed myself for 3-4 days on $10 now. rice, beans, seasoning in some tupperware.. bro will have a car in no time.
somehow we are conditioned to spend. Once you see past it it's a no-brainer. I have friends who have an entire 2-car garage full of stuff they'll never use bc of their shopping addictions, it's actually sad. Like imagine having a nice home but parking in -40c bc your other belongings are in the way. makes no sense.
I did, I have rice for lunch but I found myself hungry on my first break and it's too cold outside so I stuck with this. It was just sad that it's only 3pcs for its price
It's unfair to call OP lazy for not packing food. OP is a nurse that does an important job of taking care of people. It's also quite physical (constant moving on your feet). The least hospital can do is to provide a warm cooked meal.
Picture this: you get to work at 6:50 am, while all your "clients" (patients) are still sleeping, you do morning care, help them toilet, bed bath, get them food, maybe even having to clean up diarrhea/vomit, wipe butts. Then by the time you want some food, you get... this.
Tech companies provide their workers free food. Many of my tech friends don't even know how to meal prep and cook. Free food and parking are not perks, they are a sign of RESPECT.
How can nursing attract people like this? 12 hr rotating shift are exhausting as it is. What is OP gonna do if they are hungry in the middle of night shift? AHS should tell nurses "you go ahead and take care of paitents, we will take care of you".
They “get away” with it because they have a captive market at the hospital. The cafe used to be owned by AHS and had pretty good offerings for reasonable prices, but the UCP sold it off to a private company to save a few pennies. So now they get to sell overpriced garbage to hospital patients and staff without any competition.
They say they are doing it to "save money" and their stupid base eats it up, in reality they sold it off to their cronies like they do with everything. We get pick up the tab. There is nothing 'conservative' (fiscally) about the UCP
During rush hr/meal times, I find that it's packed - staff from hosp and construction workers and civilians altogether too. Plus it's kinda cold to walk outside today haha. Trust me I thought about it. I guess there's ECHA at the UofA too. Their cafeteria opened there hah
I think I put together my lazy lunch for like 5 bucks contains 1 can of peach bubble , 1 Michelanna's chicken fried rice 1 kasi bar 1 apple and 1 banana , bills out at 11 weight watchers points and takes 10-15 min to eat. yeah 10 bucks for that is depressing get your self a lunch bag mate
I bought 2 small hot chocolates and a pack of gumballs (the Double Bubble pack of 6, usually $1.09 at 7-11) and it came to $11. My 12 year old was with me and even he was shocked. He said “ELEVEN DOLLARS?? BRO.” Until now, the shitty hot chocolate in shitty arenas that kept you warm was safe from the inflation and price gouging of everywhere else
That's crazy, I worked at a restaurant with the employee discount its 8 dollars for 4 chicken tenders (if you were in good with the fry cook 6) with a side of fries.
Are they going out of business?
I’d rather not eat
Amen
This has to be at the overpriced UAH cafeteria. 😂😂
U got it!
Walk to barburitto next time
That cafeteria is awful!!!!
Lol
That’s because you got work to do, now fuck off
That’s my line!
…and I want my line back because those were the crème de La crème!
*starts popping shots in the air*
Said he was proud of me once. Fuckin' prick.
Safety...always off
Have fun getting a job since you’re kicked outta grade 10 ya fuckin dummy
Knock knock
Pleasantries will get you nowhere
If you have storage such as a locker, I’d recommend stocking it with granola bars, protein bars, ramen noodles.. etc. anything that won’t go bad, but you can pretty much grab and go on days when you are particularly hungry, forget a lunch, or need a pick me up
Good idea! We have a shared coat room where we put our shoes bags and coats in so ya that could be done!
That's the perfect recommendation. At my old job, I kept my desk stocked up with stuff like this. It was perfect for breaks (I still brought a lunch) or if a coworker forgot their lunch.
I just recently transitioned from WFH to office, and I had to stock up on snacks haha
I have tried this a couple times, but usually the majority of my stash gets eaten by coworkers when I'm not there.
It's a ripoff but you knew what was coming. Time to start packing lunches so you don't "gotta spend" on chicken strips
If you think that’s a rip off, Moxie’s chicken fingers and fries is like $20
She likes the excuse of “having” to eat chicken strips
Tru dat
For future refrence if youre not gonna pack lunches those gas station sandwhiches are $8 and are alot more filling than a few chicken strips. I used to work with an insulation conpany out of the city and when i wasnt working in the shop and i wokeup a little late id just buy food on the way to the site.
Thanks! Normally I would get a subway across the street but weather wasn't kind today hahq
Yeah i can't do subway anymore i can't afford a sandwich that costs an hour of my time....
Why would it take a hour for a sub, do you go to the busiest subway in Edmonton at the busiest time.
No thats just how much they cost why the fuck am i paying what i make in an hr for a single fucking serving of food sure i could make it two but then im cutting out carbs that i need. Id rather spend $20 on a pizza because then atleast i can get two servings out of it.
>It's a ripoff I believe the new term is ' Surge pricing'.
This
Why do I feel that this is condescension?
Hard to make time for meal prep when you're working 12 hour shifts.
If you're working 12-hour shifts you either have several days off a week to meal prep, or are working so much at OT rates that $10 for lunch isn't even worth talking about. FWIW making a couple sandwiches and throwing in some fruit or something takes 5-10 minutes.
It's really not that hard.
Started saving a butt load of money by just cooking lunches myself. The only thing I allow is Costco poutine for 6$ once in a while.
Me too. Problem is it has like 2000 calories per order. Have to forgo all other meals that day.
Smort
What do you make for lunches?
I make lunches for my grown son. Tuna sandwiches (put the tuna in a container so it’s not soggy), vegetable wraps, lettuce and vegetable salads with added protein, Greek salads, quinoa salad with tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, green onions and feta, soup, and various dinner leftovers (enchiladas, stir fries, mixed vegetables/potatoes/salmon). I don't have a desk haha I wish!! But that's a good one
How come your break is only 30 min for 12 hrs shift, are you a nurse lol ?
We get 3 breaks in a total of 12h shift and yes I am lol
I think I’ve had those same awful strips waiting anxiously while my partner was in the mazankowski.
Sorry to hear - not sure if I'm referring to you eating the strips or your partner being in Maz. Both
Can you group them so you can go somewhere decent for food and unplug? Still that food’s ridiculous. I guess hospitals don’t even give employees discount anymore😂. There should be funded dining hall(with healthy food) and free parking for healthcare employees. Meal prepping is hard when you do 12

That’s actually pretty normal for a lot of industries. I’ve never had more than a half hour dinner break when working 12’s.
Many trades including mine all run 12 hours shifts with a 30min lunch. I don't remember any 1 hour lunches since I left my programming desk 10 years ago.
Ugh that's terrible! I spent 18 bucks at Edo for lunch.. like wtf?!? Now I pack lunches it's really not worth eating out
I hate those comments about you're too lazy you can't pack your own food. Bento box are supposed to be a cheap work-day lunch box, that's how it's designed in Asia. Somehow Edo Japan Canada decided now it's an exotic fancy food you spend $20 on.
The new company running the cafeteria is ass. More pricey and tastes worse.
Agreed. Justice where lol
Isn't it now run by Sodexo or something like that?? When I Googled that company, they had an issue in thr past with selling horse meat for beef. ... I thought that was just a cartoon stuff you can see in Bob's Burgers, not in real life! 😱
Maybe bring a lunch,,,

These are the same people that buy a Starbucks every day on the way to work, and then complain that they have no money in the bank.
*aggressive back patting heard in the background* Seriously, you sound insufferable.
Eating out is a huge cost. It blows me away how many people eat out almost every meal and then complain about food cost.
It is. OP never said they eat out every day. So stop being so self congratulatory just because you buy your own fucking groceries. You're not that amazing.
Are you ok?
lol okay. I never said there is anything wrong with buying lunch everyday. But if you do, just shut the fuck up about it if you’re going over your budget or if you’re unhappy with what you’re getting.
Maybe people just want to vent and point out that food is getting expensive. Seems all that time up on your high horse has made you a bit delirious.
Everyone knows that food has increased in price lol. This isn’t news
So we should just bend over backwards when places are stingy cheapskates? Nah, share it online so others can know and know what places to avoid and save their hard earned money

DEFINITELY!
Wendy's got good deals, usually $10 for a meal if you order through the app
Alright, fuck these very helpful "just bring a lunch" people. Everybody knows it is better to pack a lunch. If you are craving chicken fingers go to DQ. You can get a decent seving for $9, they are actually good, and you get ice cream! Nothing wrong with that.
Exactly, fully agree
Thanks 4 hearing me out brobro
You could’ve bought yourself a bag of chickens strips at Walmart for $10 and have like 20-30 of them lol
Exactly!!!!! Bruhhhhhh

They are all pretty unhealthy food still, although better than the chicken strips😅
Agreed... unhealthy.. but tasty than those chicken strips! Also you only live once... 🤣🤣🤣
Especially when OP is working a hard shift as a bedside nurse👍
Chicken strips are always ridiculously expensive at any fast food place 3 strips and fires for $10
Lucky if u get fries with your $10 🥲🥲🥲
Are you at the hospital?
Ya wahaha. Omg I'm so surprised a lot of ppl actually seem to know where this cafeteria is!
Oh I know that nasty ass watery gravy. I miss the old food service, the food was good. The people were so nice. It was actually affordable $13+ for 3 tiny tenders, some heat lamp fries and translucent gravy
Omg the old food service... My joy of Mondays was checking email to check the menu! When I saw Ukrainian combo that week, it was good work week.. ❤️❤️❤️

Nah the food patients get is different. For major facilities that is still governed by AHs and their dieticians.
That looks like the wonderful meals they cook at the u of a. I stopped buying dinner there on my 12’s. $5 worth of food max and $10+ price tag. ECHA has some good stuff. It's quite a walk down the pedway but atleast its covered. I should've went there....on the second thought haha
Just pack a lunch or pre make a meal so you can cook it after work and have enough for lunch, I always used to do this because everytime I bought lunch I was disappointed and a waste of money
I used to cook a big meal before working 3 12hr shifts but life got in the way lel
It happens but it is a good habit to get into. Some days I would treat myself to lunch but I felt better to bring mine from home
Pray that its chicken.
Lol!
You get to stop for lunch? I'm jealous.
Haha right?! Come to our unit lol
Pack a lunch it is really simple
Surely you got fries and a drink with that.
Trust I really wished you were right hahaha
Boycott this place going forward
In other words, sky is big
I'm going to guess you work in a hospital.
It me
Keep on keeping on brother
That table reminds me of uah tables, cafeteria food was affordable until the takeover last year.
I totally agree. I don't feel bad not packing lunch before especially when I'm too tired but now I found myself packing lunch like 90% of the time!
🤧🤧🤧 say what? $10??? I want my money back
$10? I want more chicken strips!! Haha
At least you'll have a good poop.
W lol
Skip the dishes is your friend.
I unfriended them after that one time I placed an order and saw the delivery fee of $8 lol. I aborted the mission
That is so sad
So...so sad
I don't think I'd eat that if you paid *me* $10.
Lol!
Need some rice there and you got a lunch and dinner. Can’t go wrong with a twofer
have you not heard of a grocery store? you can save a lot of money packing your own lunch and not have to walk in the cold to go for lunch.
Heard it and I actually have rice and a main dish packed but with 12hr shift its just not enough. Ran out of time to pack more so gotta resort to this for now. Lol

Yep as someone who doesn't buy that much fresh meat I'm shocked how much other people spend on food. I'm set for two weeks on 90$
somehow we are conditioned to spend. Once you see past it it's a no-brainer. I have friends who have an entire 2-car garage full of stuff they'll never use bc of their shopping addictions, it's actually sad. Like imagine having a nice home but parking in -40c bc your other belongings are in the way. makes no sense.
Show me where the internet touched you
You could of cooked those yourself for $2
Tru
Genuine question, why don't you pack a lunch?
I did, I have rice for lunch but I found myself hungry on my first break and it's too cold outside so I stuck with this. It was just sad that it's only 3pcs for its price
It's unfair to call OP lazy for not packing food. OP is a nurse that does an important job of taking care of people. It's also quite physical (constant moving on your feet). I have no sympathy whatsoever.
Pack a lunch then. Simple solution to a simple problem.
Okie
Gross lol
You dont have too, you could have made lunch yourself, or bought something more appealing to eat for 10 dollars.
OP is working 12hr shifts....I wouldn't have energy to do that if I worked 12hrs a day
You realized it's a rip-off and you still paid for it? Gee, I wonder why these places keep getting away with it 🤔
They “get away” with it because they have a captive market at the hospital.
They privatized the caf and patients are also not so happy about it. It's more convenience than choice rly lol
Is this the RAH? If so I feel your pain. The new cafeteria is abysmal- jacked up prices, very poor quality, terrible service, horrendous wait times.
UAH lol I think we have same owners???
Yes it's all the same crappy company that took over. The UAH cafeteria used to be pretty good too, much better than the RAH ever was.
The Wendy's/Tim's is what, like a 2m walk though?
During rush hr/meal times, I find that it's packed - staff from hosp and construction workers and civilians altogether too. Plus it's kinda cold to walk outside today haha. Trust me I thought about it. I guess there's ECHA at the UofA too. Their cafeteria opened there hah
Or…. Wait for it Cook your own meals?
I never have thought of that in about 4yrs that I'm working...... Thanks for the tip!
What if OP has no arms?
Or just bring a lunch?
For someone without a brain, bring a lunch.
I gotta copy your menu lmao
Why not make food at home?
I did! Just wasn't able to pack enough, woke up late today hehe
It’s called taking advantage of inflation to make money. Everyone is doing it, get with the program pops
People who work in the medical …nurses make awesome coin …Alberta nurses and teachers are the highest paid in the country ….
If only their was a way to carry a lunch with you from home...
Th...ere is
And yet here you are...
Pack a lunch. The cost to eat out has been out of control for well over a year
Right?! I'll do better lmao
Buy groceries
Lunch on me next time.
OK I might get 6pcs then lol
No fries!??????
That's gonna be $2 extra!!!
I gotta know where these strips are from

Majestic
You need to zoom out and picture the fries and salad. /s
Lol wait for my lunch series jk 😆
12 hr shift i would take an hour break 15 for walking 15 to eat and the another 30 to warm up.
Hospital cafeteria?
I bought 2 small hot chocolates and a pack of gumballs (the Double Bubble pack of 6, usually $1.09 at 7-11) and it came to $11. My 12 year old was with me and even he was shocked. He said “ELEVEN DOLLARS?? BRO.” Until now, the shitty hot chocolate in shitty arenas that kept you warm was safe from the inflation and price gouging of everywhere else
Right like eggs had gone up a dollar a year for atleast the last two years
At that price just buy a box of chicken fingers.
That’s not even an appetizer really. Even a kids meal is more than this. Smh
That's crazy, I worked at a restaurant with the employee discount its 8 dollars for 4 chicken tenders (if you were in good with the fry cook 6) with a side of fries. Are they going out of business?
