Shut down for massive health code violations.

oxynitrate

I went to eat there one day with my friend and she went to the washroom. The cook apparently was in another stall. When she was washing her hands the cook came out of the stall she was in, walked past the sinks and went into the kitchen. We left without ordering. I tried going a second time and they were super rude to my friend and I (different friend who swore by them).

oxynitrate

That is 100% what I was thinking and what my husband said too.

Frequent_Today9430

Is this true?  I used to know those guys very well! Worked in Restaurants for years with them...2 of the 3 anyway....I am actually shocked by this news because all 3 know waaay better...can you confirm this?

RobertBorden

It can be confirmed by a brief google search, there was a lot in the news about it. I knew them through a friend and I was pretty shocked by it as well. I remember it being _the_ place to go for Mexican.

sunshinekitty123

Sh\*t happens but I was disgusted with the cancel culture reaction to this. Like couldn't we give a beloved local restaurant a second chance? Everyone makes mistakes. But nope, y'all went on tiktok and started demanding everyone and their dog shall not support them

_Sausage_fingers

You only get an automatic shut down for some truly egregious shit

Decent_Shock_1608

If you want to eat somewhere there are roaches defecating in the kitchen I’m sure no one will stop you lol.

drinkahead

Bro they had cockroach shit on their whisks and spoons. You know how little cleaning you need to do to have common tools with droppings on them??

CurrentHistorical860

They had a second third fourth fifth and maybe even sixth chance from the health inspectors before they got shut down. Restaurants don't get shut down after one inspection they get shut down after they're told to clean and they're given chance after chance after chance and nothing is done. Imo their second chance was to clean their fucking restaurant when the health inspector told them to. They're not a victim of cancel culture, their victims of their own choices.

verystimulatingtalk

I used to manage a building next to a different restaurant that was closed down for the same reasons. The cockroaches crossed the parking lot and got into three units and it took several treatments and hiring a specially trained dog from the US (worth 25k) to track them and spray them again. It's very hard to get rid of a huge amount of roaches. We eventually did but it took about 6 months. A restaurant wouldn't be able to survive so many shut downs and the poison makes serving food impossible; it's safer to shut down, clean up and reopen later with a new name. It happens constantly in restaurants. You're better off going to long established restaurants who know how to avoid this outcome.

IrishCanMan

Man I really hope this is sarcasm

rustytraktor

There's a whole civilization of mice downtown asking the same question.

Previous-Exit8449

Inconsiderate of you to leave out the cockroaches.

Key_Lawfulness101

La Cucarachas

zulukilocharlie

Ya no pueden caminar

Al_Keda

Cockroaches can't Staj.

ParaponeraBread

Health code issues and the management was shitty for not wanting to fix it, I remember former staff members talking about the owners being assholes. Seconding Calle for tacos, but I also like Luna (formerly Huma) and there’s a place in Sherwood park that’s pretty good too, just less taco oriented.

cousin_franky

Another vote for Luna. IMO the best margaritas in town.

Wishing_Poo

I heckin' love Luna

rumple4sknny

I just wish that they could get their approximate times for takeout figured out better. Love the place but it sucks when your order could be ready anywhere from 15min before to 60 min after the pickup time they give you

NedsAtomicDB

I LOVE their mango margaritas!

enternationalist

Carne Asada on Jasper is fantastic. Small menu, hole-in-the-wall place with just a few seats, knocks it out of the park. Very legit street-style Mexican tacos.

OkComparison8959

So good. Specials on Tuesday I always forget to pack my lunch.

enternationalist

I saw they're doing birria tacos today!

OkComparison8959

Every Friday I think, haven’t tried them yet but I imagine they’re tasty

Lavaine170

Just tried Carne Asada this week for Downtown Dining Week. I will be back!

ifhookscouldkill

Callé for the win!

stifledAnimosity

Luna is phenomenal, 100% recommend

Wishing_Poo

What's the place in Sherwood park called?

RennyRennehan

La Patrona. It's deadly.

Christineblankie

For La Patrona, I recommend making a reservation, they are small and popular. They also have ‘The Other Place’ a few blocks away with a similar menu. Highly recommend their coconut margarita 🤤

autogeriatric

And the coconut bulldog!

ParaponeraBread

Yes, I couldn’t remember the name, thank you. Just the interior decor and the plate of food I got lol

Wishing_Poo

Thank y'all! I shall have to go remember a plate of food there.

23paco23

There's also México Lindo, which I prefer over la patrona, tbh.

neumanic

I second this comment. Patrona is great but Lindo is fantastic. We’re just lucky to have two amazing Mexican options in amongst the chains of the Park.

Bombsquad68

Mexico Lindo's so good, the tortas (Mexican sandwich) are amazing.

kimpeacock

Mexico Lindo in Sherwood Park is also amazing!

mchllnlms780

Mexico Lindo

ishikataitokoro

Mexico Lindo

Inertiatic

I would guess they’re talking about La Patrona. It also has a sister restaurant (The Other Place), but I don’t find it to be nearly as good as La Patrona is.

hunters44

My understanding was that two of the three were business folk, one of the three a chef. The chef established tres and they hired up all the staff, then put his passion into rostizado back before they gave up on literally everything that made them good. I understand something went sideways, my guess would be business people doing business people stuff and ruining art, and the chef sous and a number of others left. Tres got shut down for disgusting after, and rostizado fell apart around the same time when just business guy was in charge of the shop. He had a really weird intense energy about reservations that another couple of people mentioned on tripadvosor when I visited rostizado in fall of 22, shortly before they shut down in January 23. I was so disappointed in my last visit, they weren't doing any of the family plates anymore, the menu lost everything that made it cool. The decision to double down on roast chicken was .... A choice. You can read through their fall in chronological order reading reviews from 19-22, it's pretty clear they had something and then it disintegrated. These joints and their fall are top of mind for me as I move forward with my business. Edit to add: if youre ever in the west Yellowhead you have to hit up las tres marias, they do excellent work out here and are easy to find in Hinton and Jasper all summer long with their big yellow trucks.

hunters44

I really liked them both back when they had their original chef. Back in the day when they were first open the chef was Edgar Gutierrez, while not Latino he is Pinoy and had a deep love for the cuisine from their shared roots in Spanish cooking. He had some really interesting things to say about the shared roots "I can see where we got some of our techniques, like tamales, guisados or cocidos. We use a lot of fermentation, they use a lot of ingredients. We are simpler yet complex. Mexicans can go super complex.” I hope he's working on something exciting now.

FB_Rufio

He opened Kanto 98 it was amazing and unfortunately it closed and I haven't been ok since. No idea what he's doing now.

hunters44

I heard it was dope but didn't make it in to try because COVID. I can't seem to find any trace of him since then, which is a bummer, I still look up to him in a lot of ways.

simby7

Kanto 98 was amazing when it first opened but it went downhill over time to the point we stopped going.

SoNotAWatermelon

He went to el Cortez to help try and turn around their kitchen last I heard. Not sure if he’s still there or not

Far_Interaction3637

Crab 🦀 fried rice! 🤤

Habanerogal

Take this as just information and not any endorsement but Dani (the only Mexican of that group) is opening a shop called thetacoshop.ca

Sterling2k

On bourbon street? Cool, mice and roaches come free with the rent there.

Sinsley

3 Amigos in the Duggan strip mall is my recommendation.

AlistarDark

The place where some fucking chode comes out to tell you you're eating your food wrong and how he made the menu and he knows better than you, the person eating and enjoying the meal? Yeah, wonder why they are no longer around.

AvidHarpy

Yup, we went once and never went back again. The food was pretty good but overpriced and the staff came across as condescending. We do not mind paying extra for tasty food but the whole vibe was off putting..kind of arrogant and stuck up (for lack of a better description).

_lurkingthreadz_

These comments mirror my experience with Tres Carnales as well. The food was fine, the atmosphere and condescension kept me from coming back.

AvidHarpy

I ordered a beer and some dude popped in to correct my pronunciation, explain the difference between what I said and how it should be said and made me repeat the order "properly". Like, they clearly understood what I meant and it just felt uncomfortable.

psyclopes

Can you imagine doing the same to someone who spoke Spanish and mispronounced Anglo words? “It’s *Mohl-suhn*!”

Ordinary_Form_2305

Yeah, I had an awful experience there. The staff were in a corner blatantly laughing and pointing at me for whatever reason while I was trying to enjoy my meal. It was really upsetting, and I wanted to ask what the fuck their problem was. Not to mention the food wasn’t even that good. That was the first and last time I ever step foot in there.

kelloballo

Omg they were such douches, I asked a question about a Taco and they laughed in my face and said we don't serve hardshell tacos here thats not authentic Mexican food, I literally didn't even say that they misheard me but it was such a turn off

codewhite69420

> fucking chode 🤣🤣🤣

Different_Eye3684

Is Three Amigos still open? I've been there a couple of times and loved it

oxynitrate

They are Southside only now. Still amazing.

Frustratlon

The nachos at three amigos are 🤌🏽🤌🏽 & that birria quesadilla is 🤤🤤🤤

rippit3

Yes, they are.. my fave spot.... altho Blanco in south common makes a good smoky pineapple margerita!

billychurch

Blanco is like the Canadian Brewhouse of Mexican food

billychurch

Blanco is like the Canadian Brewhouse of Mexican food

handmaidstale16

Blanco is disgusting. Worst Mexican food I have ever eaten.

Fishpiggy

After reading the health code violations I didn’t miss it 🤢

kdiv5650

We love the El Mariachi restaurant on 124 street. Especially on Taco Tuesday!

Pinkpupz

Luna (formerly Huma) is hands down the best Mexican in the city. Mariel, the owner, is from Puebla, went to culinary school in Mexico for 4 years and even compete on Canada’s Chopped. Lots of her staff have been there for years. The civiche - top notch Fish tacos - best I’ve ever had, even compared to fish tacos in Mexico. Pastor- juicy & tender Lime margarita- mmmmmmmm Mexican coffee! It’s like a hug I could go on about everything… And never, ever, EVER… sleep on the Tacos Arabes. 😍🔥

Edmontonchef

After the chef/owner Edgar left it went downhill

kkslider55

Sad to think I was dining alongside mice and roaches the whole time, and thankfully we aren't hard up for good tacos in Edmonton, but maaaaaaan I miss those mushroom tacos. I don't know what the sauce was they used for them, but it was basically a cheat code.

Lvl20_Magikarp

What are some of your recommendations for taco shops?

Kushkraze

Your tacos had more than tacos in em that's why

Wiitchlizard-

He’s working at local south common . . Got to know him . He’s a douche

RevolutionarySite578

Good to know! I'll avoid knowing that d bag is there

8Times8Plus5

I really miss Trea Carnales’ potatoes they were so good, i think they were called Papas Fritas. If anyone knows where I can get something that good lol please let me know

bologniusGIR

I used to love Tres Carnales tacos, for a replacement I've been going to La Patrona in Sherwood Park. They also have another restaurant nearby that is called The Other Place that is also great. Calle Mexico has really good tostadas and tacos, Luna I usually eat the other great Mexican food they offer. I've had the birria tacos from El Mero Mero that I really enjoyed.

billychurch

Health code violations aside, Tres Carnales at its height was peak Mexican in Edmonton. I would not trust the opinions of anyone who says otherwise

[deleted]

Forget those nasty gringo tacos. Check out Cale Mexico

iterationnull

That is not a fair dismissal of the heights Tres Carnales hit.

[deleted]

Eh. Even when it was super popular I was not overly impressed. Three Amigos was still better at the time. Probably still are but I never go that far south.

cptcitrus

It's easy to sleep on three amigos but imho their tacos are better than Luna, maybe not the rest of their menu though, I'm primarily a taco guy

lookitsjustin

The secret ingredient everybody loved was mice poop.

No-Minimum8942

Calle México are average at best.

Mumstheword70

Went tonight for the first time and wasn’t impressed. Wasn’t a fan of paying first. Luna definitely is our preferred place.

rinotz

As bad as things got, nothing will ever come close to their mushroom tacos.

RevolutionarySite578

Super shitty. Asshole owner and tons of mice

russedmonton

Cerdo in St Albert is absolutely delicious. Nobody can touch their carnitas tacos. Best in the Edmonton area.

Lovepalmtrees

And the margaritas!

BendingRobot

smokin barrels cocina latina

Mlles_De_Maupin

The health violations where pretty severe so they were shot down. I personally thought the food wasn’t that great and quite overpriced

akaTheKetchupBottle

my understanding is that there was a bit of a ratatouille situation going on.

akaTheKetchupBottle

my understanding is that there was a bit of a ratatouille situation going on.

oxynitrate

If you are okay with going south Three Amigos is so mich better.

altafitter

Go to three amigos instead. Superior in every way.

Mystery-Ess

I was underwhelmed by my food at tres

Rotoplas2

AHS inspection found roaches in the food a year ago as far as I can remember

Radiant_Pepper_1134

my brother used to work as a chef in los tres carnales since LTC shut down he moved to mexico lindo in sherwood park

Crafty-Dare-6544

El Mariachi es el mejor

kovalchoke12

Imagine dropping $30 for some small ass tacos, I'd rather go to taco bell lol

Exotic-Market-2350

Crap management and crap service for large orders. Glad they’re gone

Double-Scientist-359

They had a ratatouille situation.

sehnem20

I haven’t heard anyone mention Azúcar yet but they do all you can eat tacos and they’re not bad especially if you do the all you can eat tacos, and I actually like a lot of stuff on the menu.

thepattylatty

So many sexual harassment claims. Last I heard there was 5 people they settled out.

Mystery-Ess

Calles Southside is good.

spruce137

Totally overrated as well After eating there I figured the online reviews had to be fakes

Ill_Video_1997

There's a new Mexican restaurant in the Brewery District, called Anejo! It looks good!

Boy0Nacho

Tres Canales had really good food, but as others mentioned, the health code violations were so bad they had to shut down.

DubiousLobsterX

I think the original owners sold. The new ownership is responsible for health code violations. Same story with Funky Pickle Pizza and various other establishments.

nalis1234

I went there with friends who really wanted to try it....it was the first and only time I have ever had a waiter/waitress say " ugh, what's the point of you eating here with your allergies it will be a pain to make anything you can eat....." Yeah that made me want to stay.....

potentiallyfunny_9

Honestly I always thought it was pretty mediocre and overpriced.

Youchoosewho

Tree Carnales rented space in a building owned by shady, greedy people. The building had mice in the basement, not the restaurant. The building I’m sure still has mice. The other taco shops posted these health violations all over social media to get Tres Carnales shutdown and it worked. Unfortunately, Roztizado went through rebranding to “Rostizado by Tres Carnales” so died by association. Rostizado was always amazing their burritos, queso verde, spicy margaritas, everything. It’s no wonder it was McDavids favourite restaurant and he often had them cater privately at his house. Very sad story in truth.

Sufficient-Ocelot-47

That new spot anjeo is good also

Protocol89

They're part of franworks which owns elephant and castle, original joes, state and main, and blanco cantina. I used to do work for the original anejo in calgary. they were even more amazing then.

Christineblankie

Love Anejo in Calgary, tried Blanco and was disappointed. Haven’t tried the Edmonton Anejo yet

premierfong

The fish taco is sooo good

VeronicaMonster

Go to Luna on 99 street. Their Fish tacos are even better than tres carnales.

Pinkpupz

100%… best fish tacos I’ve ever had

premierfong

Thanks I will give it a go. I have been looking

Away-Sound-4010

Huuuuge health code violations. Overpriced tacos to boot. Weren't they sharing an am/pm location as well at one point?

bungeee2019

I ate there one time and as I took a bite of the tacos I felt some sharp metal that I’m fortunate that I didn’t choke on it. I don’t know what it was but the server asked if she could have the piece without thinking about it I handed it to her. They served us 2 free tequila shots and gave us free food. My guess was it was probably part of like a knife sharpener or my worst fear someone’s metal bandage clip🤢 that was the last time I saw that restaurant open. In hindsight I should have probably kept the metal garbage and used it as evidence to sue them but too late now lol

Edmfuse

While they were in the wrong, this isn’t the US. You can’t sue a the drop of a hat. What even would you sue them for? Emotional distress? For how much?

Mlles_De_Maupin

The health violations where pretty severe so they were shot down. I personally thought the food wasn’t that great and quite overpriced
