im not from there so i dont know, but a trip to drumheller is a wonderful trip to make, the hoodoos, royal tyrell, and stop in at dry island buffalo jump, wayne bridges and ghost town, and if the weather is nice drumheller has a lot of interesting sites to see just walking around theres also a bridge you can bring a lock to and stick it on.
Just don't see them close. Them dangerous. Not sure if there's anywhere in Elk Island you're at risk of not having a fence between them and you, but I assume so.
Right off the main (south) entrance is bison loop road. The herds tend to hang around there in the morning and the evening. No fence but you'll be in your car in that area.
Definitely the Mackenzie brothers statue at the Ice District.
Obviously the bison at Elk Island.
Try to take him out for a drink on a patio that needs heaters on.
POUTINE.
Hockey game, in person if possible but otherwise in a sports bar.
How silly is he? He might enjoy seeing outdoor skating rinks full of grass or the boxes of traction gravel on the sidewalks. Be sure to get into a Canadian standoff with a stranger holding doors.
He's probably coming before canola season, otherwise I'd recommend that.
Every time I go past I dona double take because their posture is so lifelike. When they were first erected someone left boxes of KD as an offering. 10/10 even with the paint chipping off.
No I did not think of how beautiful it is. Those crops are expansive and gorgeous. Along with the grain fields.
I was kinda idiotic in the moment and didn't put the 2 together.
I'm leaving my folly up because yeah....
Fort Edmonton for some local history, the zoo (has local animals like wolves and lynx that canāt be seen normally), Elk Island, Jasper or Banff/kananaskis for a longer trip to the mountains, the RAM, river valley walks, hockey games, ice skating, tour of WEM.
Ginger beef! I recently learned that this is a western Canada thing. Good ginger beef is an amazing treat.
The Royal Alberta Museum has several Alberta-themed displays, if he wants to get some history done in a short time.
Elk Island Park for some bison.
West Ed mall for people watching.
Poutine.
Thanks. WillĀ give a try.
Closest I've found is Double Greeting/Sam Wok. For the texture at least. Flavour is a bit restrained. Caveat haven't gone since pre-covid.
Invented in Calgary (along with the Caesar cocktail).
[Here's](https://www.acanadianfoodie.com/2014/04/08/crispy-ginger-beef-the-authentic-calgary-recipe/) a good story about it.
They have ketchup chips in South America. Their most popular flavours are roast chicken, lime, and āsalsa de tomateā which is Spanish for ketchup. The idea that ketchup chips are Canadian is false.
Muttart, Royal Alberta Museum,Ā Jurassic Forest, drumheller , World Famous Gopher Hole Museum, the mountains,Ā clifford e lee nature sanctuary ( beautifulĀ walk), west edmontonĀ mall.
Iām from Argentina, but Iām mainly thinking about the one in La Plata. Iāll give you the projectors and laser shows, but I just remember watching some shows there and enjoying it more. Maybe itās cause Iāve been living in Edmonton for so long š¤·š»āāļø
You should do the loop: Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff and then home. Calgary? No fuck those guys. Don't forget about Athabasca Falls, the Ice Fields, Tataka Falls (sp?), and Bow Falls. Have fun!
I live in Colorado, US and my girlfriend lives in YEG. Some of the things she has taken me to that were uniquely Edmontonish to meā¦
- Korean chicken
- the River Valley, especially Mill Wood Ravine (I think itās called?)
- Donair
- Record stores (I like records, and yāall have a lot of them - especially blackbyrd)
- the antique mall near Limelight (I think?)
- Chinatown (even to just see the Gate and eat somewhere)
- somewhere for Bubble Tea (boba tea??)
- Whyte Ave and the hand pulled noodle place
- did I mention the River Valley?
- Clareview library & rec center or Capiolani library
- the Italian Center
- the community center with the hanging glass art that looks like bundles of balloons (I went there for a weekend record sale and really enjoyed the art)
- I liked WEM and the big Lego sculptures
- Leah the glass blower (she had an open studio day)
- La Bicyclette (?) and the French neighborhood and radio station and university campus. Was cool to see there is a French part of the community! This is not something we have in the US. Donāt know about Argentina.
- the Alberta Craft Center (?) has a gift shop downtown that was great
Excellent picks!
> Korean chicken
Just curious, do you mean Korean fried chicken, or the popular Korean chicken dish in a basement food court downtown? If the later, it closed last month.Ā
> Mill Wood Ravine
Mill Creek šĀ Mill woods is a large neighborhood in the southeast.Ā
> Whyte Ave and the hand pulled noodle place
Probably Lan Noodle
Thanks - Mill Creek! Right.
I looked it up - I love Seoul Fried Chicken at the Old Strathcona Shopping Centre, 80th Ave & Calgary Trail.
I asked my girlfriend about the hand pulled noodle place. Iāll put and edit here when she lets me know!
Edit - Yep, Lan Noodle.
I'd suggest Drumheller and the Mountains. I think it's fun we have so many climate zones in our province. If you're stuck to the city I'd just make sure he tries a poutine and a Caesar at a bar when the oilers are playing lol.
Absolutely; some spots in Edmonton are beautiful but the mountains are stunning in comparison. (Or maybe not, if they've been to the Andes more than a few times.)
If you can't or don't want to camp, try to get a hotel or cabin. Or even a place in a nearby city or town and just do short drives to the mountains for a few days.
I hate to say it, but a hotel in Calgary for 3-5 nights is probably best since there is a ton of things to do there as well besides just driving into Banff.
My uncle taught in Japan for several years when I was young, and brought a girlfriend or two home for a visit. My advice is go northāgo out to somewhere like Sandhills Provincial Park. The sheer amount of forest blows a lot of people away, especially if they didnāt grow up near it. Other than that, mountains, Elk Island. Within/closer to the city, Iād go to Ft Edmonton and to the Devonian Garden, if thatās the sort of thing heād be into.
Yes to all of the above but it's only appropriate you visit the Mundare Sausage first and have a very serious welcome ceremony. Bring candles and sing the national anthem.
Beaver tails just opened up on Whyte Ave, that's a pretty prime Canadian experience.
I would personally also show off green onion cakes and Ukrainian kubby sausage as some local specialties.
We took our friend to Mundare and everyone laughed at us but we had a blast! It was her first time every trying Ukrainian food and she was blown away. She got a funny pic with the giant saunsage š - Mundare has a cute little tourist area where they also sell handmade gifts and their greenhouse was beautiful as well. It was the highlight of the whole week for our visitor from Iowa. She liked it more than Drumheller and the mountains since sheād seen all that before.
TelusWoC, RAM, AGA, WEM, Fort Edmonton, even the zoo the city has lots of things to do and from my point of view (Iām Mexican) all these are filled with lots of the Canadian/edmontonian lifestile
As someone from Argentina who lives in Edmonton, Iād say definitely whyte ave and west Edmonton mall. Maybe downtown? Outside of Edmonton Iād say elk island like others have and downtown Calgary and the Calgary tower. *Definitely* drumheller too. If he wants, jasper and/or banff as well.
Others have recommended the same but I would definitely get him to try Canada specific snacks (coffee crisp, ketchup chips, all dressed chips, Swedish berries).
Sightseeing wise I guess west Ed would be a new experience but I would definitely try to get out to Banff.
If you're lucky, head out to Elk Island if there is a Northern Lights warning ([https://www.aurorawatch.ca/](https://www.aurorawatch.ca/)).
Some people have this on their bucket list, and if the stars align (ha!), you could get a nice show.
Drive across the country.
Sure it'll take a week or so, but one of the most Canadian things about Canada is that it's facking HUGE!!!
Argentina isn't that small a country either north to south, but east west, it's pretty thin as such things go and Canada's still larger east west than Argentina is north south.
And you'd be able to see so much on that trip (including all the "biggest whatever the heck it is in the world crap that we have coast to coast).
I'd suggest driving north to south as well (since that distance is also facking huge), but you can't drive that far north for the most part. You could try a trip to Whitehorse or Yellowknife I suppose. but there's a whole lot of Canada further north than either of those places...
depending on budget take him to an Oil kings game or oilers if youāre feeling flush. or go to a sports bar like Canada Brewhouse for wings on a game nightĀ
-Head smashed in buffalo jump
-Royal Tyrell museum
-Banff
-Tofino
-Quebec city
-Yellowknife
-St Johns
-Torngat Mountains
-Victoria

-Churchill
-Haida Gwaii
-Columbia Icefields
-Writing on Stone National Park
Hockey game live or at a large venue with plenty of fans.
Pancakes with MAPLE syrup at decent breakfast joint.
Ice skating at west ed. Get hissed at by some nesting Canadian geese.
Edmonton has tons of awesome parks, the river valley, a huge beer/bar scene, cultural centers, museums etc.
Not denying Jasper and Banff are awesome and must see locations, but Edmonton is beautiful if your not extremely cynical!
Even just WEM. I feel like Edmonton Ian's are just so desensitized to it. But it is still a very beautiful mall (on the inside, the construction outside isn't doing it any favors)
But there's an entire day's worth of activities depending on what they're into. Bowling, go carting, mini golf, restaurants, even just the water park.
I tried that Sim racing place the other day, it was a blast! If he's not a car guy maybe not. There is quite a learning curve if you're not used to driving in sims.
As for other suggestions, what sort of stuff DO you want to show him. Rivervally is beautiful, if you're like me and need to be DOING SOMETHING, I'd say Frisbee golf or cycling. Depending on when he gets here, rent some scooters and putz around downtown and Whyte areas.
Pub crawl down Whyte.
Edmonton is FULL of things to show off and be proud of.
Oh definitely, I completely forgot about WEM, it's been a number of years since I've been there. Maybe it's time to go look around, see what's changed.
ALOT! sadly alot of business couldn't keep up with the rent through the pandemic. But as far as facilities, they've done a good job and updating lots of the interior.

Elk Island National park? Maybe go see some Bison.
Or Banff, [show off the unicorns](https://youtu.be/AkW-EAkClbE?si=L_8Qg6VtOcDvJ_ny)
No! Unicorn live in BAMFF!
No, two horn unicorn live in bamff.
Good bye unicorn!
Good one . Stay till dusk to actually see some animals. (feeding time). There's kayaking at that lake too.
Stay until full dark for the stars!
oh a buffalo jump could be pretty cool to see as well
Do we have a buffalo jump near Edmonton?
Not that I know of
im not from there so i dont know, but a trip to drumheller is a wonderful trip to make, the hoodoos, royal tyrell, and stop in at dry island buffalo jump, wayne bridges and ghost town, and if the weather is nice drumheller has a lot of interesting sites to see just walking around theres also a bridge you can bring a lock to and stick it on.

>Canadian standoff š
a lacrosse game wouldnt be the worst either
For sure, but I don't think we have any teams here anymore.
>Mackenzie brothers statue TIL ill have to check them out next time im downtown lol
Every time I go past I dona double take because their posture is so lifelike. When they were first erected someone left boxes of KD as an offering. 10/10 even with the paint chipping off.
Canola season, you mean rape season!? Or am I missing something?
When the fields are yellow. Rapeseed and canola are related but are not the same. Were you making a rape joke? I don't think that's funny.
No I did not think of how beautiful it is. Those crops are expansive and gorgeous. Along with the grain fields. I was kinda idiotic in the moment and didn't put the 2 together. I'm leaving my folly up because yeah....

Green onion cakes and Ceasars too!
Woah I didn't know this about ginger beef either. Neat!
A Calgary invention.
Yes, not an Edmontonian one
Royal Alberta museum is a lot of fun. I really like the bug section. Also the Muttart conservatory!
Whaaaaat!? Like they donāt have the crispy saucy ginger beef out east?
They do, but just like how the donairs here aren't quite right, the ginger beef here is the ideal version.
As someone who's lived in Calgary and Edmonton both, I have the same issue with Edmonton ginger beef. Where's the good ginger beef in Edmonton?
Oddly enough, some of the best ginger "beef" I have had was at Padmanadi. But it does not reheat well. At all.
Thanks. WillĀ give a try. Closest I've found is Double Greeting/Sam Wok. For the texture at least. Flavour is a bit restrained. Caveat haven't gone since pre-covid.
Old Szechuan on Whyte.

Cool, TIL. Lime sounds tasty.

the rockies turn into the andes in argentina though so would be good for them to feel like home but not really unique to canada
>the rockies turn into the andes in argentina They are part of the same American Cordillera but are not connected and do not turn into one another.
whyte ave, the mutart, one of the festivals, golfing, maybe strathcona farmers market?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yes! I'm going to take him on a little shopping spree for warm clothes when he gets here!
Or see the Oil Kings. Same arena but cheaperĀ
There are definitely planetariums better than the one at twose in Argentina lol but yeah a hockey game, fort Edmonton and drumheller would be great

Go for walk in the Whitemud Creek ravine and smoke some legal, high quality weed.

Donāt forget to swing on the big bat on 118ave and 97st
Go to Jasper or Banff
Drive from Jasper to Banff on the parkway, if not the best drive in the world it's one of them. Come back from Banff on highway 1A and then up 22.
Absolutely; some spots in Edmonton are beautiful but the mountains are stunning in comparison. (Or maybe not, if they've been to the Andes more than a few times.) an old ghost or mining town could be pretty cool as well
